I Can See The Benefit Of Online Buying

It has been years. I have been saying I am going to get new glasses for years. In 2016 I was going to get serious and go do it, but that didn’t happen. And then it seems like my eyes went that over-50-can’t-see-up-close thing. But it is that I can’t see up close with my glasses on, I have to take them off. So then I was thinking, “UGH! I have to get bifocals or progressives!” And that is just so much more. I wear my glasses every day all the time, so I don’t like to have just ONE pair of glasses. I like to have at least three pair. I like a pair of sunglasses — which I have been living without for years because a screw fell out of mine and the arm fell off — and then I like at least two different regular eyeglasses.
When I finally went to the doctor I was impressed and relieved. The doctor was so nice and gave me a prescription for both single vision and progressives. I don’t like the way progressives cut out such a big portion of the “viewing window”, with the lower sides – both inside and out – being just blurry. I don’t understand why they aren’t made more like bifocals but without the line. I thought that was what they were until I started looking at getting some. The first place I looked had different areas of blurriness depending on cost. The more you paid the more actual viewing area you have. That is annoying. Again . . . why can’t they make them so you are able to use the entire lens?
Well, that was enough to put me off from buying them for now. I decided to stick with single vision lenses which are so much less expensive. My doctor actually said that my prescription didn’t change that much so I could just keep wearing the glasses I have. I thought about that, but I decided to treat myself to new glasses. Two of the pairs I own have broken plastic around the arm and it rips my hair out — OWWWW — and the lenses (after over ten years of wear) were a little scratched.
I decided to really go out on a limb and order some glasses online. I looked at several online places and my first purchase was with EyeBuyDirect.com. I usually buy metal frames, but, as I said, the one thing that “forced” me to go get new glasses was the broken plastic pulling my hair out, so I didn’t mind that this place didn’t have any metal frames that I liked.
Since I was very leery about buying glasses online I didn’t want to spend a lot. Somehow I found REALLY CHEAP frames so I decided to buy two pair. I got two pairs of single vision glasses for $27.95 each! I figured if they didn’t work out then it really wasn’t that big of a loss. I mean, I certainly don’t want to throw $56.00 away, but I thought that it wouldn’t be too bad of a loss. While I don’t really care for the frames . . . one is too dull/gray and one is too dark, I do like the glasses. The lenses are great, the frames are comfortable, and they aren’t that bad (the colors). I love the sunglasses. I love the different colors and the little winged sides. They were more because when you add tinting to a lens it cost more.
I have a few friends that wear glasses and they were asking about my glasses and where I got them. Since they know how much glasses can be they were inquiring as to my having gotten TWO PAIR. I thought I would write up a little post to share. Those of us that wear glasses are always interested in places that have quality eyeglasses for less. If you are not tied to having a designer frame then it might be a good idea to check out the online places.
I ordered another pair from a different place. I wanted a metal half-rim. They were $36.00. I am waiting to see what they are like and if they will work. We will see.
Since the glasses are so much more affordable, I might just go ahead and try some progressives . . . they are a lot more than $36.00, but about half the cost of some places that I have seen. But, not having anything to compare them to, I am still kinda unsure. I mean, I have single vision glasses so when I purchases some online I could compare, but I don’t know about progressives.
Have any of you purchased progressives online? What do you think? Where do you buy your glasses?

I am going to have to get glasses soon, but I have no idea where to get them from. Your post is very helpful! I’m usually nervous about buying certain things online.

Yeah, I was nervous too about buying glasses online, but I read a lot of reviews and they convinced me that I could try it. I mean, really $27.95 for a pair of glasses? CANNOT BEAT THAT! So if you want to get single vision you can find an inexpensive pair of frames and give it a go.

I recently bought a pair from Costco and picked them up at the store. I only use them for driving and I just leave them in the car (which I rarely drive). However, I didn’t realize one could buy them online.

Yes! Costco was one of the places I was going to go for glasses because I heard they are a great deal! I also just learned (last week) that Target now sells prescription eyeglasses! I didn’t know that. I think that if the cost is not so much that you don’t mind if they don’t work, trying a pair from online is worth it.
I don’t like to leave my glasses in the car because the temperature changes is supposedly not good for them. I would not leave these plastic frames in the car, they would probably melt in the heat. I always want to leave my sunglasses in the car, but I don’t.
Thanks for sharing, Frank . . . and now you know you can buy prescription eyeglasses online!

Finally did away with glasses nine years ago when I had my eyes lasered. It was the best thing I’ve done and I so wish I’d done it earlier. I now love the fact that while much younger friends reach for their reading glasses, I can still read whatever. Plus, I no longer need to pay out for glasses.
