A New Report On Obesity

Obesity is a medical condition in which excess body fat has accumulated to the extent that it may have an adverse effect on health, leading to reduced life expectancy and/or increased health problems (according to Wiki).  The measurement of obesity is primarily BMI – Body Mass Index. The formula for determining BMI is divide a person’s weight by the height squared. This is just a guide as it does not always work well in determining excess body fat if the person is primarily muscle. Just like all of the information put out to the general public is a guide made to be easy and simple.

BMI Categories:

•  Underweight = <18.5
•  Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
•  Overweight = 25–29.9
•  Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater

A report recently published* revealed is America’s BMI is going up. Adult obesity rates increased in 28 states in the past year, and declined only in the District of Columbia (D.C.). Other information reported:

■  33 States have adult obesity rates above 25%
■  No state had an obesity rate above 20% in 1991
■  Colorado has the lowest rate of obesity at 19.1% of its population being obese
■  The number of adults who report they do not engage in any physical activity rose in 12 states in the past year
■  The number of states where adult obesity rates exceed 30 percent doubled in the past year, from four to eight —
Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Tennessee and West Virginia.
■  Ten of the 11 states with the highest rates of diabetes are in the South
■  Ten of the 11 states with the highest rates of hypertension are in the South
■  California’s percentage of obese is 24.4

One way to change these numbers is to eat better . . . I really believe that most of us could eat better . . . and move more. Most of us could move more too. Find something you love to do because odds are if you love it you will stick with it. This is not about looking good it is about reducing a condition that leads to a reduction in life expectancy and/or increased health problems. Feeling good is an added benefit.

  2. I think you got my number. I need to MOVE and what really stinks is… I actually LIKE to exercise. Swimming, running, and biking – even walking. Love it. I just need to find that magical time that works with my commute, not being a morning person, and getting home late. Back to the drawing board, I will figure this out! I needed that kick. Thanks!

    • I know, it is difficult to work it into a schedule sometimes. Maybe that is what we need to come up with. A mobile gym. Walk on treadmills or do the eliptical while we drive you to work. It could be an RV outfitted like a little gym. Hmmmm . . . . could be onto something.

    Great article Terre. Have you ever seen these statistics with a picture of the body at that % fat? I think that we need a reality check to see what 30% body fat looks like, so people know what obese really is. If you take a look at the big people around, what we call an obese person is way beyond 30% body fat. Eating better and moving it certainly will make a difference in your body % fat, there by decreasing your health risks and your energy.Thanks for the info.

    • Since obese is a medical term, you are correct, people might not have an idea as to what it looks like. The people with a BMI greater than 30% are medically referred to as morbidly obese because the rate of morbity actually increases due to all of the various medical conditions that result from the body being unbalanced in that manner. That is the point I was making, that it is not what we THINK, it is a medical term.

      Thank you for commenting because it also gives me the opportunity to remind people that the main reason we should all eat better and move more is because of health, not to be “skinny”. The goal should be being healthy. I know plenty of thin people who have high blood sugar levels and high cholesterol, thin does not equate to healthy.

    Perhaps I didn’t make myself clear here Terre. What we think is morbidly obese by actually looking is what? People who have 30 % body fat don’t’ look morbidly obese.. So what I would like to see is a picture of that so that people who think they are just a bit overweight can actually see how close to tipping the morbidly obese scales they really are. 30 % body fat isn’t huge! I also agree that the goal should be healthy! And I feel that a bit overweight but fit is also a good thing compared to skinny and unfit!

      I felt that I understood you. I apologize if you feel I was not “listening” or understanding. You had asked if I had ever seen pictures with statistics. I have. You had said that people might not know what 30% body fat looks like, they might not. But they can use the information to do the calculations and get an idea of where they are. Since each individual needs to take responsibility for himself/herself then that is what they need to be focused on. I feel a picture of someone at 30% fat doesn’t really do them any good because everyone is different. If the individual does his/her own calculation they will know what whatever percentage they are looks like.

    This is so much on my mind right now! My oldest daughter did a body building contest the year before she was married and had a great time, the younger kids watched her eat and work out to build her muscles. Now my youngest daughter (who’s adopted)is 16 and worried about being fat.

    It’s unfortunate for her that her birthmom is obese, and my daughter eats too much and moves to little! She has no idea what fat looks like! She sucks in her stomach, turns sideways in the mirror and turns to me looking for praise with an “I’m really skinny”.

    Eventually she’ll learn! She’s got an entire family working on eating well and moving more!

    • Often times people don’t realize how their health is affected by weight. Nor how their health is affected by not exercising. A 16 year old might not learn until it’s too late. With an entire family helping her to learn she is on the right track.

      Plus there are so many different activities now-a-days I bet she can find something she likes to do that gets her moving.
