Daylight Saving Time 2023
Posted by terrepruitt on November 6, 2023
In 2010 it was cemented in my brain that is it is Daylight Saving Time, not Daylight SavingS Time. No S. I hear various opinions on the subject of Daylight Saving Time and I know that some of us like it and some of us don’t, but what I am particularly confused about this year is that some people don’t know what it is. I am seeing several posts about it and how people don’t like it as they set they clocks and hour back. I feel like they have their times swapped. Daylight Saving Time is when it is dark in the morning and light at night (sometimes up to or past 9:00 pm). We typically say we are moving the clocks FORWARD. STANDARD Time, is just that where it is a little lighter in the morning, but get dark before a lot of people get off work. We typically say we are moving the clocks back. Some may be familiar with the saying “Spring forward, Fall back.” So I am not sure about these posts.
I think there is a ploy out there for people to say things wrong, or spell things incorrectly so that they get a lot of comments on the posts correcting them so I haven’t bothered to try to clarify because I somewhat feel that is what is going on. But then I am not sure. With some people liking Standard Time and some people not, I can’t tell when they say, “Daylight Savings Time is messing us up.” If they mean they think we are moving into Daylight Saving Time or if they think we should stay at Standard Time. The fact that most of the posts I am seeing saying Daylight Savings Time (that wasn’t a typing error) make me think they don’t know what it is.
This is copied from my previous post:
Daylight Saving Time had been observed in the United States spottily since 1918. From February 9, 1942 until September 30, 1945 it was observed all year long. Daylight Saving Time was not consistently observed for 21 years (from 1945 to 1966) because there was no federal law.
In 1966 the law stated DST ran from the last Sunday in April to the last Sunday in October, but states could pass a law of their own if they didn’t want to follow DST.
Then in 1974 an emergency act was passed setting the clocks ahead on January 6, 1974. It was amended on October 27, 1974 returning the clocks back to Standard Time. Then DST was observed from February 23, 1975 through October 26, 1975.
Then from 1986 to 2007 the United States observed DST from 2:00 am on the first Sunday of April until at 2:00 a.m. on the last Sunday of October.
After 21 years in 2007 it was changed to: DST beginning 2:00 am. on the second Sunday of March to 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November.
Hawaii and Arizona are among the states that do not observe Daylight Saving Time.
—–
In 2018, California voters voted to pass a law that allows the Legislature to change the period of Daylight Saving Time and/or make is permanent. “The measure repealed Proposition 12, also known as the Daylight Saving Time Act, in Section 6807 of the California Government Code. The measure added new text as Section 6808 of the state Government Code. If federal law authorizes the state to provide for the year-round application of daylight saving time and the Legislature considers the adoption of this application, it is the intent of the this act to encourage the Legislature to consider the potential impacts of year-round daylight saving time on communities along the border between California and other states and between California and Mexico. (ballotpedia.org)

I hope we will be told when the government decides to change the time.
What are your thoughts regarding time change and one or the other?

Burned For The Last Time
Posted by terrepruitt on September 13, 2023
I bought these years ago and for a very long time I didn’t use them because of the slit in them. I figured it was for a pot handle to go through, but it never really made sense to me. They were in the bottom of my drawer for a long time. They were moved to the top so I started using them and it never failed that I would grab a hot pan and the slit would open and I would burn myself. I kept saying, “Oh I should sew that!” Well, I burned myself for the last time. So recently while I was on a phone call telling someone the story I decided enough was enough and I sewed that opening closed.
Do any of you have potholders with slits in them? Do you use them (hang them off the pot/pan)?

Straight Leg Inner Thigh Stretch
Posted by terrepruitt on August 28, 2023
Here is another inner thigh stretch. This one is on one knee somewhat like the “Half Kneeling Inner Thigh Stretch” but one leg is straight.
-Kneel on the floor on all fours. Straighten one leg out to the side. So hips are squared to front.
-Move hips back (towards foot) and forth.
You will feel the stretch in the inner thigh of the straight leg.
Options and additional information:
-The “back” foot, the one with the bent knee, can be top-of-foot to floor or you can have your toes curled.
-The foot of the straight leg, can be flat on the floor or you can be on the inner edge of your foot.
-The foot of the straight leg, can have toes pointed to the front, out at an angle, or out to the side.
-You can just sit your hips back and not move them.
See what works best for you and what gives you the stretch you need.
As I said in the other inner thigh stretch post, there are many different ways to stretch a muscle.
If you keep your toes curled (on the kneeling leg) you will be getting a foot stretch like in our Toe Squat.
How is it going – your stretching? Are you able to get a couple in a day?

Mama Africa
Posted by terrepruitt on August 9, 2023
I am not on TikTok, but I am on Instagram waaaay too much. I think the way it works is people do/record “TikToks” and then they post them to Instgram or others do, somehow I do end up watching things that were first on TikTok. All this to say that the trend might have started on TikTok but I have seen it on Instagram. You may be familiar with reels that are videos with a snippet of a song playing. Well, if you have been on Instagram at all I am betting you have heard “Makeba”.
“Makeba, Makeba, me que bella. Can I get a “ooh-ee”?” . . . . yeah, that is what it says I had to look it up because I have this tune on repeat in my head and I had no idea what it was. Some sites say “me que bella” and some sites say “me che bella”. The singer-songwriter is French.
“Makeba” was released in 2015, yes I am just hearing it 8 years later. It is a very catchy tune, one that gets stuck in your head. And the catchy part is actually said over and over so that makes it even more catchy.
It is about “Mama Africa” a woman who was born in Africa in 1932 and died in 2008, Miriam Makeba. Who, Britannica.com claims to be “one of the world’s most prominent Black African performers in the 20th century.” And Wiki says that she “was among the first African musicians to receive worldwide recognition. She brought African music to a Western audience, and popularized the world music and Afropop genres.” She was a civil rights activist and that is what Jain is saying in the song. It is such a catchy tune.
Do you know it?

Email A Tree?
Posted by terrepruitt on July 26, 2023
I am currently listening to a book. And it is taking me forever even though I am not paying that much attention. It is interesting, but it is telling me what I know. It is filling me in on more details about what I know so that is why I am trying to listen, but I cannot remember the details nor do I need to. It is giving me additional information, but it is also causing me to be very curious about a lot of things so I find myself stopping and looking things up and going off on tangents. And one thing it just informed me of had me saying “OH! I am doing a blog post about this.”
The book is The Joy of Movement and it is explaining about “runner’s high” and how the brain is effected and a lot of “cut up the brains of lab animals” kind of stuff.
But I am at the point where it mentions you can e-mail trees in Melbourne. Now the program started years ago with the intent of notifying the city if there was an issue, but people emailed gratitude and admiration. So . . . . of course, I had to do it.
I found a lot of articles regarding it, but I didn’t see any of them say how. So I went to the city’s website and entered “email a tree” in the search and a map came up and you can click on a tree and it states the type of tree it is and allows you to click “email tree”. So I did. 🙂
Since I don’t know anything about the city I picked a tree on Batman Avenue. 🙂
Anyone else interested in e-mail a tree? Tell me what you say.
I sent an e-mail to:
Araucaria
Bunya pine
tree ID : 1635292

Half Kneeling Inner Thigh Stretch
Posted by terrepruitt on July 19, 2023
If you have seen any stretching posts of mine, you know I love me some stretching. You know I think stretching is very important and very beneficial. Here is another stretch for you.
-Kneel on the floor and take one leg out. Knee pointing away from the body to the side. If you were to hold your arm out to the side the thigh would be in alignment with the knee and toes point out in the same direction.
-You can use your arm to push the knee/thigh back a bit.
-I may be stating the obvious, but normally you would do one side after the other. 🙂
That’s it.
This is an inner thigh stretch. It stretches your adductor muscles.
As with many stretches and exercises there are many ways to stretch/exercise a muscle/set of muscles. This is just one.
I teach a stretch class so, of course, I would love you to join, but I also really believe that stretching is so very important so I just want to post some stretches so you can do them on your own and experience the benefit of stretching.
Do you stretch?

Cat-Cow
Posted by terrepruitt on July 17, 2023
I am always wondering why they say “Cat-Cow” but DO “Cow-Cat”? I don’t. In my classes I say Cat-Cow and we do cat first. But in all the yoga and stretch classes I take – except for one I remember – they say “Cat-Cow” but we DO “Cow-Cat”.
I wonder why that is . . . . anyone else or am I the only one? Does anyone know why?

Half Kneeling Psoas Stretch
Posted by terrepruitt on July 3, 2023
I would wager that most of you reading this know that stretching is very beneficial. Daily stretching can do wonders for comfortable movement. Stretching does not have to be a time consuming thing. I may agree that longer sessions of stretching might be more beneficial than shorter ones, but a quick stretch is better than nothing. Also, if done daily a 5 minute stretch session could really help.
And when I say “help” I mean help with moving throughout life more comfortably. Of course, there are many people that have many issues that could be exacerbated by some moves so please keep in mind that I am not giving medical advice and that you need to keep your own body’s situation in mind.
With all of that said here is a great stretch that can reach multiple areas.
Here are quick instructions with * adding more.
-Kneel down and bring one leg out in front, whole foot on the ground.* (Half kneeling.)
-Keep the hip of the “down leg” in alignment above the knee. Activate the glutes by tightening or pushing forward a bit.** Add an “additional” stretch by lifting the arm and bending to the side of the front leg.***
-Remember to lengthen the spine and keep the “up” arm shoulder relaxed.
*Stability can be obtained by moving the front leg away from the midline of the body, by turning the foot of the front leg in, or by pulling the front leg’s knee in toward the body. Also one could use a block, furniture, or a wall to stabilize.
The foot of the “down” knee can be flat (top of foot on the floor) or with toes “curled”.
**The stretch is happening in the front of the body of the kneeling leg. I say “front” of the body because it is not just in the leg, but also it is not really the “front” of the body it more of an internal stretch through the psoas.
***When you lift the arm the stretch also goes through the side of the body.
It targets multiple areas that can really benefit from being flexible. The main area being stretched is the psoas, hip flexors, the side body, and the ankle. If you curl the toes (of the down leg) then you would be stretching through the bottom of the foot (like in a toe squat).
We do this often in my classes. Do you stretch?

Amaryllis 2023
Posted by terrepruitt on June 16, 2023
I looked at the amaryllis this year and thought they were very light. I hadn’t remembered them ever being light . . . certainly not this light. But my hubby said they had been light before. And when I did a search on my blog for “flowers” I realized I don’t always add that when it is a Friday Photo post. And in trying to do so I did spot a very light one in 2021. Here is my annual amaryllis post. Such a lovely reminder.
