Keep Moving

Posted by terrepruitt on August 21, 2019

I wrote this post four years ago when I started watching Grace and Frankie. I found it and thought I would post it because it still holds true, except now they are four years older. I don’t even remember the episode in which she put her foot in the kitchen sink . . . they’ve done so much since then. And, yeah, it is crap, but it is funny crap.

Okay, let’s make a deal: I won’t judge you and your choice of TV shows, if you don’t judge me. Well, to be honest, I won’t judge you even if you do judge me, because I know I watch crap. In fact, I think all TV (except some documentaries) series are crap. I do believe TV is crap, however, sometimes there is some pretty funny crap on TV. Recently I came across Grace and Frankie. Funny crap. What made me even look at it was the picture that came up on Netflix. It is a Netflix original series and the ad for it was RIGHT there on our opening screen. I didn’t recognize Jane Fonda at first. The picture looked a little “too young” in my opinion. So I clicked on the whatever to take me to the summary and I couldn’t believe it and could not imagine that (the situation on which the series is built) happening so I decided to watch the first episode. Regardless of what you may think of Jane Fonda that woman is impressive.  Any the my main point to this post is you gotta keep moving.

I was sharing how amazed I was by the way Jane Fonda looked and someone said, “Yeah well, I am sure she has had a lot of work done.” I said I didn’t care I still thought she looked amazing. Then another friend piped in and said something to the effect that, yeah she is 77 so she has had to have work done, but it doesn’t LOOK like it. Sometimes you look at people and you want to know who their doctor is so you NEVER go to them. I agreed.

But what really amazed me was in one episode she had just some in from the beach and she wanted to rinse off her foot, in the kitchen sink. She just swung her leg up into the sink. Yup, 77 years old. I know a lot of 17 year olds that couldn’t do that. Then she swung it down. And she swung her OTHER leg up on the counter to dry it off — which is funny because she didn’t actually rinse that one — at least that we saw. But anyway, my point is, so amount of cosmetic surgery is going to help you swing your leg up into a kitchen sink.

You might not have the means or money or desire to keep your face looking young. You may not want to get nips and tucks to look svelte. But I hope you want to be able to walk with comfort and ease. And keeping your joints flexible doesn’t cost anything. Working to keep your mobility and strength up doesn’t require a cosmetic surgeon.

I know I will never look like Jane Fonda, but I do hope that when I am 77 I am still washing my feet in the sink and drying them on the counter.

Let me not close without saying that Lily Tomlin looks positively lovely in this show too. I am thinking she is in good looking shape, too, but her character wears long flowy things so we never really get to see. But again, who cares. She is in her 70s to and she is doing a TV series for Heaven’s sake. I am not in the industry of TV or movies, but I do understand that it is not easy. They might make it look easy but it is not. So any of these people past 70 doing TV and movies have to be in pretty decent shape. It is just the cherry on top if they look great doing it.

Move it or lose it!

Do you watch Grace and Frankie? Do you agree that a body needs to move in order to keep moving?

Cootie Catcher

Posted by terrepruitt on April 20, 2016

A few months ago I heard that there might be a Gilmore Girl Reunion.  Then as things unfolded (ha, that will be a pun, wait for it) it turns out that there is going to be one.  Well, I wanted to be up-to-date and refreshed on the series so I started re-watching it on Netflix.  I am so happy that there is such thing as a start and a stop when watching some programs because I often have to stop this show – and quiet often –  because I really cannot stomach Emily Gilmore.  I can barely stomach Taylor, but I don’t usually stop watching because of him, but I do because of Emily.  I just need a break.  But then again when I started re-watching the entire series I was wondering why I had a vague feeling of not liking Lorelai because I love her, well, I did.  I just got to the episodes where I don’t like her so much and now I know why I had a “bad taste” in my mouth regarding her.  Season six the last episode.  I am just now beginning season seven and it turns out I didn’t need to rush to re-watch the entire series because I think the word is that the mini-series won’t even be out until 2017, but we will see.  Netflix is doing the revival.  Anyway . . . a couple of seasons back . . . I don’t even remember which one now, they had a cootie catcher on the show.  That had me thinking.  How fun!  I want to make a cootie catcher.  So here you go.

First you need to have a square piece of paper.  If you are using an 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch piece of paper you make it square by folding over one corner to meet the edge of the paper.  Then you draw a line, then cut along the line.  Now your paper is ready to go.

Next fold each corner into the line and to meet each other.

And you end up with a smaller square.

Then turn the square over and fold all four corners into meet each other.  So now you have a smaller square.

Then fold it in half with the four points you just created on the INSIDE.  So you have two squares on each half (the outside) of the fold paper.

You put your fingers in the four squares and work the catcher open and close.

Then you write on it allowing it to do what you want it to do.  One version is colors on the four squares (spelling the color open and close . . ), then numbers on the eight triangles inside (then you would spell the number, opening and closing the catcher), then have the person you are playing with choose another number and open the number and read the fortune/quote inside.  Ahhh, the simple things.

Some people call them fortune tellers, but they can be used for anything.  You can use them to help assign chores.  You can use them to help figure out what to have for dinner (hey, I might need to make one just for that).  I am going to use mine with my Nia students to give us our focus and intent for our Nia class.  That will be a post on its own.

Bye Bye Bill

Posted by terrepruitt on April 28, 2015

We ditched cable.  Yup.  My husband has been asking me forever if he can cancel cable.  I have not been receptive to the idea because there are a few shows I like to watch on Network TV.  He got a ROKU and he signed up for Netflix.  This was a long time ago.  We watch a lot of our favorite shows on Netflix.  Not new stuff.  We tend to watch things over again.  I am in the middle of watching Fraiser for the third time.  We also watch the Star Treks over again.  We have a few other series that we watch on Netflix, but sometimes we have to wait for Netflix to get the seasons.  You may be familiar with the phenomenon of binge watching a show and then having to wait for the next season to be acquired by Netflix.  Recently my husband signed up for Hulu.  This was because some of his shows could be watched on Hulu.  Hulu gets shows sooner than Netflix.  It works out because we can watch them when we want to watch them.  We don’t have a DVR, so Hulu and Netflix work good.  That left just us needing cable even less.  But doesn’t it figure that the only channel that is not on Netflix or Hulu is the channel and the shows that I want to watch.  Well, he must have been doing a lot of research in order to get rid of cable.  He found CBS has their own streaming channel.  Ahhh . . . . my shows.  Anytime I want.  So we got rid of cable.

We didn’t have any fancy cable package because we don’t really watch that much “new” TV.  As I said, we tend to watch shows over and over and over again.  I think I mentioned that before in a post.  We have a lot of DVDs and Netflix works good for us.  Not only did we not have a lot of cable channels we didn’t have the channels in HD.  That is one of the reasons why my husband likes to watch the shows he watches on Hulu instead of when they are broadcast on TV because it is in HD.  Once he got Hulu for his shows the number of shows we watched on broadcast TV was down to three.  So he wanted to cancel cable, but as I said, CBS didn’t put their shows on Hulu or Netflix.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoWhile he and I were in discussions about cancelling cable, a few of the CBS shows showed up on Netflix.  But not Hulu.  The shows on Netflix were past seasons.  Hmmmmm . . . interesting.  And then, as I said, he discovered CBS Access or whatever it is.  And his major sell was he held up the remote that controls the TV channels and he said, “When was the last time you used this?”  I looked at him and couldn’t say.  I laughed.  I really thought it was funny that I only watched three shows on one channel.  So yay!  Now we don’t have any TV channels and we can watch TV when we want.  I know we are kind of late to the party because we have a lot of friends that are the same way.  We will see how it goes.

We had our first giggle this past weekend while we were trying to decide if we were going to watch a re-run of Saturday Night Live.  We were discussing that it really wasn’t that good, when my husband said, “Oh, we can’t watch it even if we wanted to.”  Again, I laughed because we don’t have the TV channels any longer.  Ha!

I am already really enjoying the CBS channel on Thursday nights because I have to teach and usually I rush home to get dinner on the table by 8:00 so I can see Big Bang Theory.  I find that when I watch reruns I think I haven’t see the episode, but 10 minutes in I realize I have.  But what happens is I am busy with putting dinner on the table so I miss the first few minute.  Now . . . I can watch it when I want.  I think with both Hulu and CBS there is a time limit.  But so far I haven’t been affected by it on Hulu and we just got the CBS channel thing so I will have to see about that.

Another great thing is we have one less remote.  At one point when cable did something (I don’t even know what) they gave us a remote that we had to use INSTEAD of our TV remote.  We had five (eyes rolling).  Now we only have four.

Do you have cable?  How many channels do you have?  What are your favorite shows?  Do you have Netflix?  Do you have Hulu?

I Wanna Grab The Beauty In The World

Posted by terrepruitt on December 27, 2014

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYo, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCATime with the family.  Time with friends.  I hope that you were able to enjoy Christmas no matter what.  There is such good energy around this time of year.  I just like to soak it all up.  Some people take this time to reflect on the sadness that has occurred throughout the year, but to me this is the time of the year to forget all that.  This is the time of year where there is so much joy I don’t want to dwell on the stuff that has happened that might be sad.  I want to take advantage of the sparkle and shine.  There is soooooo much good stuff going on, I want to grab onto it and fly.  It is like a butterfly that is flying by . . . I could sit there and put my head down and think about loss or I could stop and watch it. I can enjoy IT while it is here.  I can see the beauty and live in the moment.  There is always time for sadness and sorrow, but the world is not always so excited, so I want to be right there in THAT fun stuff.

I had some time this weekend to watch one of those old shows on Netflix.  It is one of those comedies that I can only watch for a few minutes at a time because the main character is so annoyingly dumb and causes all of her problems (why yes, that is how comedies are made).  So I usually watch about 10 minutes at a time.  But this weekend the main TV was playing movies I didn’t care to watch so I took my little device and watched my show.  It was the last few episodes.  It is soooo much better when a show has actually ended and they get to wrap it all up.  They did a good job.  This show, regardless (or irregardless — ha, ha, ha, totally a joke on the show!) of its stupidity, often made me laugh and cry.  They did a good job wrapping it all up.

The ending song though really grabbed me! I found myself thinking . . . . .”Snap!  I had to watch this entire series to get to this AWESOME song!”  Then I immediately went to iTunes to buy it, but I can’t because I am having issues . . . happens often . . . oh well, I can get it resolved, just not right now.  I will focus on this song . . . on the happy ending of the series I just watched (Ugly Betty) and of the wonderful Christmastime I had with my family, on how lucky I am.

Update 01.05.15: my original post consisted of lyrics I copied and pasted from a website.  I have edited this post to reflect the words that I hear in the version of the song I have.  (My hubby got my computer working and I was able to purchase it from iTunes!  Not much different, but with at least two lines I like what I hear better.)  Not sure about the “I know it’s fact is true now” line.

“Beauty In The World”  Macy Gray

I know you’re fed up
Like a lead up for us  Life don’t let up for us
All they talk about is
What is going down?
What’s been messed up for us?
When I look around I see blue skies
I see butterflies for us

Listen to the sound and lose it
Its sweet music and dance with me In sweet music and dance with me
‘Cuz there is beauty in the world
So much beauty in the world
Always beauty in the world
So much beauty in the world
So, shake your booty boys and girls for the beauty in the world
Pick your diamond pick your pearl there is beauty in the world
All together now

We need more lovin’
We need more money, they say
Change is gonna come
Like the weather
They say forever
They say
When they’re in between So, Baby, in between
Notice the blue skies
Notice the butterflies
Notice me

Stop and smell the flowers
And lose it the sweet music and dance with me And lose it in sweet music and dance with me
‘Cuz there is beauty in the world
So much beauty in the world
Always beauty in the world
There is beauty in the world
So, shake your booty boys and girls, yeah, beauty in the world
Pick your diamond pick your pearl ‘cuz there is beauty in the world
All together now

Heya throw your hands up and holla, “Heya!”
Throw your hands up and holla
When you don’t know what to do
Don’t know if you’ll make it through
Remember god is giving you beauty in the world Remember God, He’s given you beauty in the world
So love (Beauty in the world)
Yeah love (Beauty in the world)

There is beauty in the world (Beauty in the world)
Beauty in the world (Beauty in the world)
So, shake your booty (Boys and Girls)
All the beauty in the world (Beauty in the world)
Pick your diamond pick your pearl (Pick your pearl)
There is beauty in the world (Beauty in the world)
All together now
Yeah love
Yeah love
Oh love
All together now

Hey baby when I’m looking at you now
I know it’s fact is true now
There is hope for love There’s love, there’s hope for us and
There is beauty in the world
Hey baby
Hey baby when I’m looking at you
I know this vibe is true I know it’s fact is true now
There’s love
There’s hope for love there’s hope for us and
There’s beauty in the world

I am just so blown away that I am just hearing this song.  Believe me, if I could have downloaded it, I would be dancing to it RIGHT NOW!!!  I hope you had a great time this over this Holiday.  There is only one more regularly scheduled day to post this year for me.  I hope you will come back for my final post!  I promise nothing except that I will do one.  Thank you for being here.

How was your Christmas?  Or, if you don’t celebrate, how was your Thursday?

DVD Swap

Posted by terrepruitt on July 8, 2014

Do people still have DVDs any longer?  My husband and I do.  I like them.  Especially with our Netflix.  I am CONVINCED someone at Netflix is having a good laugh on our behalf.  We will be watching something . . . . it does not matter what . . . and right at the part you are waiting for it will start loading.  I swear.  At first my hubby and I got annoyed, but now it is just funny because it is so comical.  It really as if there is someone who presses a button to stop the show from playing right when it is most important.  It could be, “I know I have not told you the truth about anything your entire life.  I know you are upset with me, but I had a very good reason.  This is hard.  You see I am — LOADING! — or “I love you, Sam.  I have loved you since the moment I saw you.” (Sam opens her mouth and — LOADING! —).  We have learned to laugh.  Netflix will blame our carrier and that is fine.  I don’t care who does it, it just happens and it is funny.  So a DVD is nice, no commercial, no “LOADING”.  Not “LOADING” or getting all messed up when we stop and start the show.  No “LOADING” when we rewind.  Just nice and simple viewing of the movie or TV show.  But does anyone else have DVDs any longer?  Well, I am late in learning this but I did just see it last week and that is ——–LOADING! ——— Just kidding.  I just learned about a website called www.swapadvd.com

Cool!  I am impressed.  Granted when my hubby and I buy a DVD it is because we want to keep the movie or TV show to watch over and over.  And that might sound odd to you — it did when I first met my husband — but it is something we do.  But . . . there are a few exercise DVDs I might want to swap out.  Yes!  That is cool, huh?  You can switch up your workouts by swapping exercise DVDs.  So you could have a group of five let’s say that you do for 30 days, then put them on SwapaDVD and get a whole new set of workout DVDs.  Do that set for a month, then swap again.  Always keeping your workout varied.  Of course, my “set of five for 30 days” is just an example.  You could do one for two weeks.  Whatever . . . . the point is that you can swap and mix it up.

When I first learned about this and thought about posting about it.  I did a quick search of dance exercise DVDs and there is quite a few.  And there are over 500 10 Minute Solutions DVDs.  I love those because you can do a 10 minute workout when you are THAT pressed for time or program the DVD to play as many as you want to get a longer workout.  There are yoga DVDs.  In my quick search just now there seems to be a lot of pregnancy and yoga DVDs.  That makes total sense.  You are only pregnant for a limited time so you want to get rid of the DVD once you are not pregnant any longer.

The website’s info is below:

• You have original, playable DVDs that you do not want to keep.
• You post those DVDs to your “DVD Tower” to offer to other members.
• After you have posted the first 10 DVDs to your DVD Tower, you get 1 “gift” credit from SwapaDVD to get you started swapping (limit one per household).  After that, you earn credits by sending out DVDs to others.
• You may order available DVDs for 1 credit per disc (some DVDs do cost more than 1 credit), plus a Swap Fee of $0.49 per item (no matter how many credits are in the item).
• If you want a DVD that is not currently available, you can place it on your Wish List and we will notify you by email when it is available for you to order.  You can even have it sent to you automatically when it becomes available, with no email necessary.
• When a DVD is requested from you, we notify you by email, provide the address for you to send it out, and even provide a wrapper with postage printed on it if desired!
• Wrap and mail your DVD.
• When the requestor receives it, you earn 1 credit per disc mailed. Yes, you pay the postage to send out your DVDs, but when you request a DVD, the sender ships it to you and you pay 1 DVD credit (some DVDs do cost more than 1 credit)!
• The DVDs you receive from SwapaDVD are yours. We hope that you will repost them to share with other members when you have viewed them, but you can certainly keep them, or give them away. Similarly, the DVDs you send out to others belong to their new owners.

SwapaDVD is a great way to share DVDs with people all over the country!

I think that is pretty cool.  What do you think?  Do you still watch DVDs?
