New Stuff Is Learned, By Experts (And Me) – Part 1

Posted by terrepruitt on January 8, 2020

CPR certification expires in two years (at least when you take it through certain organizations). Before mine expired I took an online class to recertify just as I had done the last time I needed to recertify. Having taken in-person classes before, I realized that online courses when re-certifying is a great service. Sometimes there are classes that are both, online review and then hands on experience. It is pretty interesting all the classes that are offered. I was kind of happy because the course I took from the American Red Cross was not the same as they have offered before — which is always nice. It is a drag to take the same thing over and over. The online course had some improvements. One thing I liked was it testing me on the timing of the compressions. Yes . . . the online course tests you on the timing. Over the course of the program I was too fast and I was too slow. At first, I was too fast – I didn’t realize it was actually timing me so I just starting clicking as fast as I could to be done with it . . . but it makes you do it again until you get it correct. Then I was too slow . . . anyway, by the end of the course I felt my timing was better. Never felt that way before in a CPR class so I thought it was great that the course actually was able to keep track and help me improve. But my employer didn’t accept this training this time. Last time I renewed they did, but this time they didn’t. So I just decided to take a class they offer. As I mentioned in other posts about CPR training, you should check with your employer. I did not because they had accepted it before . . . perhaps their policy changed.

I was not looking forward to spending four hours in training. The online course was about that long but I didn’t have to drive to it. This in-person training was scheduled to be from 5:30 to 9:30 – ugh! The last time I took a class offered by my employer all we did was watch videos and it was so boring and I didn’t feel I got much out of it. It was so boring that my supervisor at the time was on her phone the entire class. That didn’t help matters. Perhaps you can see why I was dreading having to take this class. The first thing the man did, however, was tell us what he was going to go over, then he asked us what time we were told we were going to get out, then as if bragging, he claimed he was going to dismiss us an hour earlier than scheduled. He had my interest. He had a HUGE list of things he was wanted to cover AND he told us we were going to get out earlier than scheduled. Alright, show me what you got, Dude.

BAM! He did it! Plus he entertained us, he told us some new stuff, and he made us feel we could do it (perform CPR) if we had to.

Yes, I will be the first to admit that I NEED to hear it again, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get bored.

But . . . within the last ten years, things have changed. I am going to share with you the things I learned in this latest training that I thought were cool. I am going to share with you in two posts because I don’t like long post. My last post was longer than I like them to be.  I want to keep them short so you will read them.

There was the decision to train people to do CPR without the rescue breaths/ventilations. Rescue breaths/ventilations are when you actually put your mouth on someone else’s mouth and breathe air into their lungs. Not everyone wants to put their mouth on a stranger’s mouth . . . there are SO many reasons for that, there is NO reason to be critical of that type of thinking. So, they (the experts, whoever they are) realized that chest compressions without ventilations are fine and much more effective at saving a life then nothing at all. So, hands only CPR is not new . . . I’ve been trained on it in the last ten years. But the sense that is ok, as in the complete and total non-judgment of someone not wanting to put their mouth on a stranger AND the acknowledgment that compressions only will get the job done is kind of new and rather refreshing . JUST compressions are ok and definitely better than nothing!

So, if that is all you do you are good, which is great because here I am already long . . . so, if you want to hear more of what I am excited about sharing check back, as I am going to try to keep you in suspense (not really, post is just too long.)

Charge Fast And Lasts A Long Time

Posted by terrepruitt on January 6, 2020

When my husband got his new phone it came with AirPods . . . yeah, it was years ago. Anyway, he really liked them. He had gone through a couple of “wireless” earbuds. They usually ended up dying pretty quick because they were not really good with getting wet. Or whatever. I had bought some wireless earbuds and I like them, I bragged about them in Affordable Wireless Earbuds. I like them, but I am not good about charging things when I am not using them, then when I go to use it, it needs to be charged. I also wasn’t finding many occasions to use them. But, being the generous kinda guy he is my husband kept asking me if I wanted some AirPods. I kept saying no because I don’t really like the earbuds/pods and . . . I am not good at charging and I don’t use the wireless earbuds that I have very often. Then they came out with wireless charging AirPods. So my husband asked me if I wanted his AirPods and he would get the new ones (he really wanted the new ones). I kept saying no. Well, he did well NOT buying them until one day he “accidently” 😉 left his AirPods at my dad’s. He couldn’t go a month or two without his AirPods and actually he wasn’t even sure he left them up there. But when we went back up there he found them. So . . . guess what . . . I inherited his AirPods. I put them in my drawer. I forgot about them for a couple of months. Then one day I decided to try them instead of carrying around my Beats Pill.

Not only had it been months since he gave them to me it had been at least a month before that when they had last been charged. But I thought I might as well try them, so I put them in — they worked! I was amazed that after all of these months they still worked. Wow. It had been at least 3 – maybe even four months and they were charged enough to work.

The charge lasts a long time. And when it gets low you can pop them into the case and it will charge up to about 80% in less than five minutes. That is very fast. Also while you are using them you can charge up the case so when you want to charge up the AirPods themselves you pop them in and bam! they have juice rather quick. If you want them at 100% you might have to wait a whole 10 minutes (or so). So, charging the AirPods is not as difficult as I thought. It is so quick which is really impressive to me.

It is also cool . . . to me that your phone tells you how much of a charge they have. It also indicates how much of a charge the case has. I find that helpful at times. I do find it odd that the AirPods are not always equal . . but whatever. With noticing the indication of amount of charge for the AirPods, I noticed that my phone does the same thing for my Beats Pill.

Not everything is recorded at the same volume and sometimes in the middle of what I am listening to, I want to adjust the volume. They do have four different actions you can choose to set each AirPod to perform. You can talk to Siri, Play/Pause, Next Track, or Previous Track. I have my left one set for Previous Track and my right one set for pause. With Audible you can choose between five different Jump Forward/Back times and the “Previous Track” on the AirPods corresponds to that setting – which is cool. The Beats Pill has volume and pause/play, but not forwarding or reversing capabilities. My husband always laughs as me because when he goes to talk to me I smack myself when I am wearing the AirPods . . . I am activating the pause.

I don’t use them to talk on the phone much . . . but I don’t talk on the phone much. When I am listening to a book and someone calls, I have used them. They work pretty well.

If you take one out of your ear they stop. If you can have them close together they will play, but that is annoying. It is not legal to drive with headphones/headset (both ears covered), so basically you can’t have two pods/buds in your ears. With the airbuds you could just use one and it worked fine but with the AirPods you can’t. Well, I just tucked one of them up on my ear with my glasses holding it and that works. But I find the whole – not working when they are far apart, kind of annoying. I have had one fall out and it stops the play. I would prefer that action to be an option. Maybe volume and an option to stop play when you are only using one could be a next upgrade. That would be cool.

Anyway, I am really impressed by the battery/charging situation. It actually allows me to use them because they charge so quickly.

At first when I would see the case I thought it was dental floss. And now that we have two cases that have the potential of lying around, I fancied mine up . . . hence the blue flowers around it.

So what about you? Do you use headsets? Do you use any wireless ones? Do you have AirPods? What do you think?

Late Christmas Post

Posted by terrepruitt on January 3, 2020

I am usually ready to put away the decorations, but this year, I am not. They are not “bothering” me and I am not tired of them. This one is actually not mine. I wish I would have thought to post it on Christmas. I was wanting to do a post on Christmas, but we were at my family’s (this is theirs) and I didn’t get to it when we got home. So, here . . here is what should have been posted on Christmas as today’s Friday Photo. I suppose by next week’s Friday Photo, I will have to move on from Christmas stuff . . . but not yet.

Happy New Year!

Starting 2020 With Some Melty Goodness

Posted by terrepruitt on January 1, 2020

Here it is another New Year.  WOW!  2020!  Here is another opportunity to recap last year or write about the year to come.  Not feeling either of those things this year.  So, I thought I would start off the year with a recipe.  Ooooo!  Ending the year with a “recipe” and starting the year with a recipe.  Sounds good to me, how about you?  Does that sound good to you?  Well, with this recipe comes a story.  I can’t say exactly when, but I can say that I remember it, so I couldn’t have been so young that I don’t remember.  My parents used to go out to dinner very infrequently.  We didn’t always have money for things – my dad worked a type of construction so there wasn’t always work – so going out to dinner was a super special treat.  When they went out to dinner one of their favorite places was a restaurant called The Bold Knight.  Now, unless you are over 50, even if you live in the bay area you have not been to The Bold Knight I am talking about.  Ya know, things change.  But back in the day I am talking about they used to have this cheese fondue that was delicious.  The last time I went to The Bold Knight, they had melted Velveeta.  Now, my husband loved it and I am sure there are other people that do, but back in the day they had a cheese fondue that tasted as if they actually cooked it and didn’t just put a chunk of yellow food-stuff in a pot and melt it.  Anyway, my mother LOVED their fondue.  She went on a quest to find a recipe that tasted just like it.  I know she tried a lot of things.  She finally settled on one.  And it has become the family recipe for fondue.

Cheese Fondue

(1 cube)   1/4 C butter
(1 tsp)   1/2 tsp salt
(1/2 tsp)   1/4 tsp dry (powdered) mustard
(3 tsp)   1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
(1/2 tsp)   1/4 tsp garlic powder
(1/2 C)   1/4 C flour
(2 cans)   1 can (12 oz) BUDWEISER Beer*
(1 lb.)   1/2 lb. mild cheddar cheese (grated)

Melt butter, then stir in salt, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.  Add flour, a little at a time,  keep stirring, stir all the lumps of flour out.  Bring to a boil, then stir in a little beer at a time.  Cook until thickened.  Then put in cheese a little at a time while stirring.

Serve hot.

(The measurements in parentheses are for a DOUBLE batch.)

We dip raw vegetables; broccoli, bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms, cauliflower.  Also, cooked cubed steak.  Sometimes apples.  And ALWAYS bread.  I prefer sourdough bread, but my hubby is not a fan of the sourdough so I usually have two types of bread; sourdough and French bread.

*As a VERY IMPORTANT NOTE, it does not matter what type of cheddar cheese you use, you can use medium, you can use sharp, you can use mild, but it DOES MATTER what type of beer you use – it MUST BE BUDWEISER Beer.  Not light, not ultra, not lime, nothing other than plain ol’ BUDWEISER Beer!  Believe me.  I have thought it would be good to use something else to add a unique flavor or bring more to the fondue – NOPE!  Doesn’t work.  In fact, just this Christmas I laughed when my uncle said, “You have to use Bud.  I’ve tried other beers and the best one is Budweiser.  It doesn’t come out the same if you don’t.”  I agreed and told him I actually discovered that some years ago.  I thought I had told him that, but perhaps not.

For many years I was unable to attend Christmas dinner at my family’s house due to a scheduling conflict, once we started going I was surprised and happy to learn that one of their traditions is to have fondue as an appetizer during the day.

My husband and I have had a few years where we have fondue as our New Year’s Eve dinner or our New Year’s Day dinner.  We had it on New Year’s Eve this time.  I am always surprised I haven’t posted the recipe before, so I am doing it now.  Starting off 2020 right!

As you can see from the handwritten recipe, I can spell Worcestershire sauce as well as I can say it!  🙂

I hope you enjoy this family recipe.  We love it!
