Cork Christmas Trees

Posted by terrepruitt on January 4, 2023

I bought a project years ago that required corks. I had asked my family to save their wine corks for me. Well, it became a habit that never stopped and I never did the project. I have bags and bags of corks and I wanted to do something with them. My dream is a huge cork wreath, but as is my other habit I didn’t start thinking about doing something until late November and so I didn’t get to that particular cork craft, but I did make a few Christmas trees.  Trees that can serve as decorations around the Holidays.

As with most of my crafts they are an experiment that morphs as I create. The execution is pretty much never like the idea or design. Especially with cork. I didn’t really think about what a wine cork is (a bunch of pieces pressed together that don’t allow for a straight path through!) and it is dang inconvenient to work with.  Drilling or poking a whole STRAIGHT through a wine cork is kind of a joke, a little blob of cork will send the drill bit or poker in another direction. Corks also swell differently, so they end up not even. So, as you have seen and can see the trees end up a little “not perfect”.

I made a funky tree which I love. The idea was that it was not perfect just like a real tree. The person I made it for is very flexible and has always been really good (in my opinion) of embracing things and not having to have things be perfect or a specific way.  She is good at going with the flow.

I made a monogram tree for some of my family. And I made several of the little trees. Every time I showed one of the little ones to my husband he asked, “Is that ours?” So I got the impression he thought we needed one. So I made one for us. I think I am going to add some pins to it, but we will see.

I sent little ornaments along in case the recipients (of the funky tree and monogrammed tree) wanted to add more decorations.  The monogrammed one is actually somewhat plain to let the “B” show through.

I did realize as I was typing this that a cork wreath does not have to be for Christmas.  I hope to work on it through out the year!

Yay or nay to the cork trees?  Which tree do you like the best?
