My List Of Foods Containing Quercetin

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYo, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classesI was looking in a catalog of supplements . . . one of my Nia students gave it to me after class.  We didn’t even have a chance to discuss it because she handed it to me as she was leaving, so I didn’t even realize it was a catalog of supplements until I flipped through it and saw every other page was an advertisement for a supplement.  Anyway . . . it had an article in it about the flavonoid, quercetin.  It reminded me of the information stating that it has been proven to be an anti-inflammatory and an antihistamine.  Since I primarily mention eating onions, apples, and citrus fruit in my two posts, An Apple a Day and Allergy Relief, I thought I would look up some information regarding what other foods contain this interesting plant component.  I found two sites with the same list.  I went through the list and found the things that I eat or would eat.  Some of the foods listed I didn’t even know what they were, such as Bog wortleberries, dock leaves, and lovage leaves.  Some I wouldn’t eat because they are peppers, such as ancho peppers and hot green chili peppers.  But I would eat some of the items listed.  I DO eat some of the items listed.  I could increase my consumption of some of them.

I love apples.  I could easily eat more of those.  I don’t experience apricots that much, but I like them ok.  I think you know how I feel about blueberries, but I did discover I like them in a green smoothie.  I LOVE cherries!  Not so sure about eating green beans raw, but I just had kale in a green smoothie this past week.  I have received plums and grapes in my produce box.  But I don’t eat them often.  I eat onions pretty much every day in a green salad.  It is good to know that quercetin is in tea.

So what about you?  Do you know what a Bog wortleberry is?  It has a lot of quercetin in it but not as much as canned capers or dock leaves.  Since I don’t know what dock leaves are I don’t know if you would eat a 100 grams of them, but I can’t imagine someone eating 100 grams of capers.  So, I guess it is good that they have so much quercetin in them.  You can still get some from a smaller amount.

I am sure there are a lot of people who eat a lot more than is on my list.  The peppers alone.  I know many people who love peppers.  Anything on my list that you eat?  Anything you might think of increasing consumption of?  What about the full list?

An Apple a Day

You know that saying, right?  “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” I was in the habit of eating an apple about four to five times a week. But then I got out of that habit. This week I had one in my salad and it was very satisfying. It took care of any sweet tooth I had. It was nice.

I forgot that apples might even help with allergy relief. I wrote about it in my Allergy Relief post. Now that I am thinking about it my allergies have been better and I have eaten an apple the last couple of days. Amazing sometimes how I don’t even realize how some foods are helping me. Apples contain quercetin which acts as an antihistamine. As I mention in that post quercetin is also an anti-inflmmatory. I can see how — if apples help with just these two things — they can help keep the doctor away.

The quercetin might also help regulate blood sugar. We all understand high blood sugar is not good, neither is low blood sugar so a simple food, such as an apple, which helps regulate it is awesome. One thing that a regulated blood sugar does is help keep you feeling full. Which alone could help with blood sugar regulation because then I am not eating things that are convenient and maybe not so healthy.

Apples have good fiber, not great fiber, but added to a healthy diet they can certainly give you a good percentage of our daily needed fiber.

With all the good stuff apples have in them they might be considered to help protect against cancer. The dietary fiber helps with the elimination of cancer causing chemicals in the colon, according to “Power Your Diet”. Apples contain antioxidants which have been associated with prevention of some cancers.

As with most fruits and vegetables, raw is better in that it preserves a better portion of the nutrients, but an apple can be eaten so many ways. There is raw plain, or raw with a dip. There is baked or sautéed. They can be added to things. Plus there are so many types. I like hard apples, so I like Galas and Fujis. I am not a fan of Delicious apples, they are too soft. Pippins are really hard, but very tart.

I don’t like cooked apples. I like them raw. What about you? What is your favorite apple? What is your favorite way to eat apples? If your favorite way to eat an apple is in an apple pie, that’s ok, you can admit that here. We won’t judge, I mean, apple pie is American after all.

Allergy Relief

For some reason, unknown to me, my hubby does not like medical shows.  Medical dramas he will watch, but if I have on a show that is a doctor talking about anything he won’t watch it.  So needless to say, I don’t watch those types of shows.  I don’t know when they are on, but every once in a while I will turn on the TV when he is not home and there is one on.  Like recently when I watched the Dr. Oz show when he was talking about foods that starved cancer.  I just think all that stuff is interesting.  I love to hear what they learn about the body.  It is fascinating.  Well, today I sat down for a moment and turned on the TV and Dr. Oz was on.  I really should find out when it is on and just make a point to watch it when my hubby is not home because I always learn something when I watch his show.

I only saw a few minutes but it was really interesting.  He was saying that it is important to change your home’s filter, ya know for central heating, every three months.  I know we don’t do it that often, but after what he said I think it might be something to consider.  I have always known that it helps trap dust and pollen and things floating around in the air that might help to aggravate allergies.  But I never really thought about insect parts.  Ewwwwww.  He said that insects and their parts are a very common allergen.  YUCK.  Not something I really want to dwell on, but one of those things that I like to know, deal with, then forget about, ya know?

Also he has said that certain foods; onions, apples, and citrus contain Quercetin.  Quercetin acts as an antihistamine.  Which is something that most allergy sufferers take in pill form.  It is awesome to me to be able to get some anti itch help from the food I eat!

The information I am seeing as I look around also states that Quercetin is also considered an anti-flammatory agent . . . and a lot of allergy symptoms are from inflammation so something that acts as an anti-flammatory is amazing to me.

I am very happy to have come across this information.  I don’t always EAT white or yellow onions, but I do put them in food for flavor.  I am starting to eat the red onions they tend to be less sharp.  I do eat apples, but I don’t believe I eat them as often as I should, so I will step up my apple consumption.   Although I like oranges, I don’t eat them that often because it is difficult to find good flavorful ones in the store, but I will work on that too.  If these foods will help quell my allergy symptoms . . . . I am there!
