Cats Love Bags

Posted by terrepruitt on October 18, 2017

Seems like I am posting a lot about cats.  I recently posted about how you can use a box and/or packing paper to entertain a cat or two. Either the box itself will do the trick OR your can bring life back to a forgotten toy by using it in conjunction with the box. Well, a couple of days later I was given a bag with something in it and when I empty the bag I left it on the floor. Next thing I know I hear a cat diving into it. Then she hides. We played a bit. Then a couple of days later I am in the room and I THINK I see Nessa come in the room, but I don’t stop what I am doing to look. When I finished what I was doing I looked around and there was no Nessa. And I think, “Dang, I really thought I saw her, I must have been mistaken.” I go to move the bag and I am surprised by a cat in a bag. She loves this bag.

Here is Nessa in the bag with Teagan playing from the outside.

Here is Nessa in the bag getting my finger.

Then on FaceBook I saw someone post a video about a guy who built his cats a maze made up of 50 boxes. I watched it without reading the story attached to it only to find out at the end of the video it was Cole and Marmalade. Awww. I love Cole and Marmalade! Many of us do! Click the picture to go to Youtube to the video in which Cole and Marmalade’s dad builds them a maze made out of 50 boxes. Then he throws treats in the boxes so they jump into the boxes to get their treats.

Crazy For Dried Mushmouth Flakes

Posted by terrepruitt on October 11, 2017

I probably should have warned you . . . I have a few cat post brewing. They have been swirling around my head. I thought it would be best (for me) to just get them out. You may have seen me mention that we have two cats. You may have also seen me mention that one cat is tiny and the other cat is big. They are actually about the same size, as in, the same length and the same height. And in fact, they are not large cats. I would say they are medium, if not small. The are NOT large. But one is heavier than the other. The heavy one makes us think we should try to have her eat less and the thin one makes us think we should feed her ALL the time. But I think she is comfortably thin. I mean, when I look at her or pick her up, I kinda freak out because she is soooo tiny. She is thin . . . her bones stick out and they knock together when you pick her up . . . but . . . she is in charge of her eating. It is not as if she doesn’t have access to food. She is just a very lean cat. If she had any issues that I notice about moving or toileting, I would be concerned, but she moves like the wind. Just last night I heard my husband make a flabbergasted noise in another room and I asked him what that was about. He proceeded to explain how Nessa, the thin one, just moves like there is no stopping her. It doesn’t matter what is in the way she will get around it, she will jump over it, fly past it, sail under it . . . just MOVE. She moves in very amazing ways so I am confident that she is pretty healthy despite her small frame. But . . . I still try to get her to eat more.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitI probably have mentioned how I will put the wet food down and Nessa will lap up all the liquid. Then she will go away. Teagan will come in and eat off one plate. Then sometimes she will go away. Then later on Nessa will come back in and eat some. Then Teagan will come back in and sometimes she finishes what is left . . . but sometimes not. It is really difficult to track who eats what. When you try to watch them and monitor them then they don’t eat. So leaving them to their own devises, probably ends up that one eats more than the other. So with that in mind I discovered that Nessa likes one brand of cat food that Teagan does not. In fact, Teagan will only eat one kind that I have purchased so far. Nessa will eat others, but not Teagan.

One day Nessa was in licking her empty plate and I thought, “Hmmm. Maybe she will eat these fish flakes I have. (And have had for a long time.)” Oh my word! She gobbled them down. I thought, “Well, I don’t even know if Teagan likes them because Nessa just sucked them down.” So I decided to buy more.

Well, Teagan does not like them, but Nessa will gobble them up. She will gobble up a pile then look at me and make her little squeak for more. So I will give her more. Teagan will not touch them, even though they are bascially tuna. So . . . this is another thing that I can feed Nessa and not fear that Teagan will eat it all. But then I feel bad because Teagan asks for something, too. But the whole point it so get more food into Nessa.

Anyway . . . I just thought I would share this treat that my one cat considers crack-like. I think they might make us go broke because we are down half a bag already. I thought we had gotten them a while ago, but we just got them Friday.

Do you have a treat for your cat that they LOVE?  What treats do you give your cat?

Box And Paper Magic

Posted by terrepruitt on October 9, 2017

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitWhen we first got Spot the Cat I wasn’t working. I think I was home for a few months. But when we first got her I still didn’t want to get her a big scratching, lounging type of tower. I couldn’t decide on a tower and I thought it was a good idea to change up her play structures. I thought that having large sturdy boxes that we could change was better for her to play in. I thought it would help her from getting bored. When we first got her my husband worked at a company where there was often surplus boxes around. He worked at a box company so sometimes the mock-up box created for a client would go unused. About once every three or four months either he would bring home a box or we would use one that we had something delivered in. He and I took turns cutting the box. We would cut “doors” and holes in it so she could jump in and out of it or crawl around. It is amazing how much fun cats have in boxes. Eventually we got a tower, but when we had access to a big sturdy box we use it, too. We do the same thing with our two cats now. Boxes and packing paper seem to be items that bring endless hours of entertainment and/or help bring the interest back in a toy.

A while back we got something in a big sturdy box. My husband cut the doors and holes in it and we gave to the cats. They love it. I have made my husband suffer through keeping the box. I move it out into the garage (and this is where the suffering comes in because it gets in our way) every once in a while, taking it away from the cats. I keep it out there for a month or so, then I bring it back in. I think this one, I had it out there for a long time this last time I took it out because my husband threatened to throw it away quite a few times. When I brought it back in the house it was totally worth all of our “suffering”. Our cats, especially Nessa when crazy over it. They rubbed all over it and jumped in it. Nessa was ALWAYS in it. They love their box.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitIt works well because Nessa is such a tiny light cat, she can jump up on it. Teagan can be on it, but she is not as much of a jumper as Nessa. The chase each other in and out of it. We use the fliers to have them play in the box. They love it.

Christmas is coming so the house gets crowded with the tree so the box will be going out again soon. It will be out for a few months then come back in.

But the packing paper will probably stay for a while. We use that to entertain the cats too. It comes and goes. So many things come packed in packing paper we always have some around. The cats love that too. Teagan will NOT tolerate a flier being under the paper. Or anything for that matter. She can be sound asleep and if you put a toy under the paper she will jump up and pounce on it. She is hilarious when it comes to something under the paper.

Nessa likes to play with toys and the paper, too. It is really as if the toy is brand new.

Two easy ways to bring life back into a neglected toy – use it with a box or packing paper. Also easy and simple ways to give something to the cats to play with. The box alone and the paper alone provide entertainment. Add a toy to it and there ya go.

Today I Was Buzzzy

Posted by terrepruitt on June 5, 2017

Oh, I know it is not Friday and I am just going to pop a picture up at the last minute. But you would not believe the day I had. Wow! Basically I spent it dealing with my dad’s estate.  I did work on my website to adjust the SJCITY Fit stuff, that was the extent of work on my work today. I spend an hour (at least) trying to get a HUGE hornet out of the house. Oh, perhaps that can be my post. It actually was a funny story. I was upstairs working and I kept hearing some rough-housing downstairs. I would hear what I thought was a cat running up their tower. Then I would hear some scampering. Then quiet. Then noise. And this went on for a bit. Finally, I thought, I had better check because if they have been playing this long it is probably getting to be at the rough point. Just like with kids it goes ok for a bit then after a while it seems like someone gets a bit rough and someone ends up getting hurt. Before I went downstairs I thought I would check to see if one of the cats was up here (she has found a new spot). Sure enough, Teagan was on the throne.  That meant Nessa was downstairs playing all by herself.

When I got downstairs, she ran, looking guilty, and one of our speakers was crooked. So I thought she had went up the tower, onto the speaker, across the curtain rod, to the entertainment center. So I straightened the speaker and said, “No, Kitty.” And she looked guilty. So I went into the kitchen. Then I heard her rough-housing again. So I came out to see what she was doing, and she gave me that I’m-not-doing-anything look. Parents in all forms have to be familiar with that look. So I went back into the kitchen. Then she was at it again, so I came out again. This went on at least four times. Then as I was walking out I heard the tiniest “Bzzzz.”

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitI pull back the curtain and I see this HUGE WASP. It was HUGE. I have never seen one so big. Yeah, in the house. By then Teagan had come downstairs and realized that there was prey to be had and wanted to get in on it. So I scooped them both up and locked them in my office. And I spent the next hour trying to get the thing out of the house.

I was afraid to disturb it so much that it flew INTO the house. It was pretty much staying in the window area. So I opened the sliding glass door which is right next to the window it was in (which doesn’t open because it is a picture window). Then I got a handful of clothespins and I clipped the curtains together. There is a set of two over the picture window and then the one that is over the slider. I was hoping that I could fan the wasp with the curtain and encourage it to go outside. Well, it wasn’t budging with the curtain fanning.

I got my blow dryer thinking I could blow it towards the open door. No. It just hung on tighter. All the while I am going outside to look at it from the outside because I don’t want to open the curtains enough to look and possibly let it out into the room. Then I got the cobweb duster. It extends really far and I thought I could use that. Again, I didn’t want to open the curtain too much but I had to get the duster in there. So I just poked in there. And the wasp moved but it slipped out of the place where it is too high and I hadn’t clipped the curtains (of course) and landed on the wall. But it was the wall almost right above the open door. So I swooshed it out. Well, I had hoped I got. I looked and couldn’t find it.

But I didn’t take down my curtain contraption or let the cats out of the office until my hubby got home to check for me. Geez. So I had sat down to try to think of something to write and was on my computer when I heard all the commotion. Nessa wasn’t playing with her sister or playing by herself, she was attacking a wasp.

Here is Teagan and Nessa on the tower. This was in January 2017 . . . I was just going to post this but then realized I could share a portion of my crazy day.

What do you do when a bee/wasp gets in your house?

It’s A Bird, It’s A Cat, It’s A Dog, It’s A . . .

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitHave you ever wanted to fly?  Or lie around all day in the sun like a lizard?  Or jump six times higher than your height like a cat?  Or see what it is like to be the opposite sex?  Have you ever imagined any of this?  Have you ever just looked over at something and taken a moment to image being that?  Have you ever wanted to just see what it would be like?  If you could be a bird, dog, cat, boy, or girl for just one day would you?  If it was guaranteed that you would be safe and cared for would you want to see what it is like to be a house pet?  Would you like to experience – just for a day – being in the body of the opposite sex?  I have always been curious about flying.  I would be interested in seeing what it was like to be a large bird of prey.  And I would love to see how it is to really be a cat.  When I asked my husband he said he had never had any desire.  I found that very surprising.  So it made me wonder.  I thought I would ask.

Now, this is not about being happy or unhappy with who and what you are.  This is just a do you wonder kind of thing.  Have you ever wanted to just be a bird or a cat or a dog or a fish OR – just to see what it was like, not permanently?  Would you do it – just for a day or a few hours – if you could?  What would you be for a day or a few hours?

Looking Down From The Throne

Posted by terrepruitt on January 13, 2017

So here we are rounding into the middle of January 2017 already.

We had a cat before the two we currently have.  This was her “throne”.  My husband and I call it that to distinguish between the tower, the little scratching post, and this scratching post.  This scratching post has a spot where they can sit.  Nessa and Teagan LOVE it.  They have scratched the carpet off of the post.  I need to re-carpet it.

Here is Nessa hanging out on the throne looking down on her subject.

First Cat Appearance In My Friday Photos

Posted by terrepruitt on November 4, 2016

I did say that there would be a lot of cat pictures.  I take HUNDREDS and HUNDREDS.  I am trying not to make my Friday Photo just a succession of cat photos.  I am trying to space them out.  It is difficult.  This one is from over a year ago.  They have actually grown a bit since then.  But they still lie around together.

Mews Of Change

Posted by terrepruitt on August 10, 2016

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitSorry, I couldn’t resist (Mews Of Change).  One of my most recent posts was an “update” about our cats.  It really wasn’t an update because there was nothing new to share.  It was more just a report or an excuse to post cat pictures.  If you are a pet owner and anything like me, you take hundreds of pictures of your pets.  I mean, they are just so cute, right?  “Oh, look!  She’s upside down.”  “Oh, look, she is pawing at the shadow of the bird.”  “Oh, look!  She is covering her face!”  Seriously, basically anything they do, right?  So, I do love to share my kitty pictures.  But this time I really do have an update.  A couple of weeks ago there was a post on my Facebook feed from PureWow.  It was 15 Irish Baby Names That We’re Totally Going to Steal.  I saw two names that interested me.  My hubby has not been fond of the name Smokey for our cat, and I have not been fond of Esmeralda.  It is not the names per se; it is those names for our cats.  When I saw this list I thought a couple of these names fit the girls better.  So John and I had been toying with the idea of changing their names.

I wasn’t sure because I feel as if Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitthey recognize their names.  They are cats, so it is not as if they come when they are called, but they KNOW their names.  So I thought it might not be nice to change them.  But, they just seem to fit better.  And my husband is doing a really good job of calling them by their new names.  I was calling them both, trying to get them used to it.  I was still unsure.

But then . . . I was put on the schedule to teach yoga at The Dancing Cat and part of the announcement includes information about us living with two cats that we adopted from The Dancing Cat.  And it lists the cats’ names.  So, I thought, well, if we are going to change them, we might as well do it now.  We might as well let The Dancing Cat and the people that worked with Smokey and Esmeralda that we are now calling them something new.  Something more fitting – at least to us.Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitSo we are now calling Smokey Teagan, which means beautiful.  She is really a beautiful cat and I call her Beautiful half the time anyway.  I also like the name Teagan.  She could never get a big head because she is the sweetest girl.  And we are calling Esmeralda Nessa, which means ambitious and/or fierce.  Now that is not a bad thing at all.  She is very ambitious and I feel that she can do anything she sets her mind to.  She has fierce passion.  I have been looking into Nessa a bit more to find information to make me certain of the fit and I found Baby Names of Ireland.com:

“Nessa was the mother of Conchobhar (Conor) Mac Nessa, king of Ulster. A powerful and beautiful woman, ambitious for her son, she tricked her second husband, Fergus, into giving up his kingdom to his stepson, Conchobhar (Conor), for a year, but Conchobhar (Conor) ruled so wisely and so well that the people chose him to be their permanent king.”

I could totally see Esmeralda as powerful and beautiful and SMART.

So, there you have it an ACTUAL update on the cats.  Some news, yet also a post where I can post more cat pictures.

If you are local and you want to come take a yoga class in the presence of cats, check out my page where there is a link to register at The Dancing Cat.  You will be able to hang out with the cats after the class.  So your donation includes yoga AND a cat visit.

What do you think about the new names for our cats?
