I received roses AND lilies for our anniversary! These were so fragrant they scented the entire house! I love to post flowers for my Friday Photo. Do you see the roses in the background (left)? I posted a picture last Friday.

Date Of Death
Posted by terrepruitt on March 31, 2021
I think I swore I would remember this year, but I think I forgot . . . or almost. Who really knows, right? I think about five or six days before I started feeling “off”. I have switched up my workout routine so I was thinking it was maybe that. I always look at what I have eaten. I thought maybe it was that. I have not been great about drinking (what I consider to be) enough water so I was thinking it could be that. Then two or three days later I just was feeling “icky” I kept looking at all of the aforementioned things but none of that seemed right as the reason for my “off” feelings. One thing that is so frustrating or baffling . . . depending on the moment of introspection . . . is that the feeling or sensation is so difficult to describe. It is a feeling of doom or dread or sadness or just screw-it-all that just does not make sense, combined with confusion and indecision and some giddiness and grumpiness pretty much all at once. And the physical sensation is an ache in the stomach . . . no, the back . . . no, right under the ribs . . . no, the heart . . . no, the spine . . . no, the . . . get what I am saying? And not always just an ache, but a stab or tingling or a dryness or a sweaty-ness. Basically it is just OFF. And, again, when everything is examined there isn’t really anything exact to point out to account for this . . . but . . AH HA!

Communicated via writing and heavily medicated
So, my mom’s death certificate states 04/11/14, but that is not the date she picked. She picked March 31. She had a mangled esophagus, partly due to delayed diagnosed cancer and partly due to a medical error, but when she went into the hospital on March 22, 2014 she didn’t know that she would not be leaving and that when they placed a tube in her throat to allow her to breath she would have to pick the day they took it out telling her that is the day she would die. Well, she didn’t die die on March 31st, but she was gone then. They removed the tube and put her in a medical coma so that we could watch her die slowly for the next 10 days.
I have stated before the body knows trauma. I had posted about it in a complete different context, but I think death of a loved one is trauma and I think the body remembers it. And even though the death certificate states 04/11/14 because that is when her heart stopped she was actually gone from us when they put her to sleep and removed the tubes.
So, I think that I get a feeling of doom or dread or sadness or just screw-it-all that just does not make sense, combined with confusion and indecision and some giddiness and grumpiness pretty much all at once. And I physically sense an ache in my stomach . . . no, my back . . . no, right under my ribs . . . no, my heart . . . no, my spine, no . . . accompanied by a stab or tingling or a dryness or a moistness. I think you may get what I am saying.
I also think sitting at home and not being able to be out and about and seeing friends and family might have exacerbated “things” this year.
I believe that many of you may feel the same way . . . and maybe many of you can’t put your finger on it. But now maybe we will remember.

Another Tower Shot
Posted by terrepruitt on March 12, 2021
If you were to ask me I would say that Teagan doesn’t go up on the tower that much. But then as I was editing this photo to post it I noticed I just posted a picture of her on the tower. This is from years ago. I think it is cute . . . but I am the mom so . . .
I am using Teagan on the tower AGAIN as a Friday Photo. I hope you had a nice week.

Badminton + Table Tennis + Tennis = Pickleball
Posted by terrepruitt on March 8, 2021
I started teaching at one of the community centers in San Jose in 2012, now I don’t know if Pickleball was there that whole time or exactly when it started, but I know that I had seen it on the schedule the last few years. I thought it was an indoor court sport, like a type of basketball game. I know I used to park in the lot next to a court and assumed that they were playing tennis. I never stopped to look and it didn’t dawn on me until last week. I still don’t know for certain, but the more I hear about it from one of my students the more I am convinced it was Pickleball. Have you heard about Pickleball?
Well, one of my students has recently started playing it and the more she talks about it the more curious I became. What is Pickleball? Where is it played? Where did it get the name? Just a bunch of questions so I decided to look up some answers. And like I most often do, I decided to share the information with you. Perhaps you will learn something new!
I like the simple description from Wiki “Pickleball is a paddleball sport (similar to a racquet sport) that combines elements of badminton, table tennis, and tennis.”
There is a USA Pickleball site that has ALL the information.
It is played with a paddle like ping pong, not a racket like racquetball or tennis, but the size of the paddle is bigger than with ping pong and not the same shape. It is played with a net on a court indoors and outdoors. The court is the size of a badminton court. The ball is plastic and has holes in it. It can be played as couples (with four people) or singles (with two people). Although, my friend said her community has also come up with a three person game. Which makes sense because there is always three people that want to do something in every thing. The one person in a couple may want to play when the other one doesn’t, or one of the couple gets injured. So I love that her community (and maybe other places have done it too) has come up with a way to make is a three person game.
I hear since the court is smaller then other games it is a little bit easier, but not necessarily EASY. It is still a good workout and a game that one gets better at as they practice.
The origin stories of the name are funny and debated. First of all it was invented in 1965 in Bainbridge Island, Washington by three dads that were trying to keep their kids entertained. One naming story is that one of the men had a dog named Pickles that kept stealing the ball, the other is that one of the wives called it a pickle because “the combination of different sports reminded me of the pickle boat in crew where oarsmen were chosen from the leftovers of other boats”(1).
My friend said that the rules sound ridiculous. She commented that she joked with the person trying to explain them teasing her that she was making them up . . . so, of course, I looked at the rules on the site. And I must agree they sound very confusing . . . but I understand that most games’ rules sound confusing and they become clear the more you play.
It had been a few years that I had been hearing about it so with my friend’s involvement I just wanted to learn a few things about Pickleball and I then I thought I would share what I learned with you. It is not even close to being as old as it’s three components (badminton, table tennis, and tennis), but it is gaining in popularity so who knows what will happen in 100 years.
Have you heard of Pickleball? Have you played Pickleball?

An Old New Toy

About 20 years ago we bought a refurbished Roomba. It didn’t work. This week my husband fixed it — AND he Roomba-ed a few rooms. Our cat was fascinated by this little device.
A Roomba and a cat for today’s Friday Photo.

Potato, Ham, and Broccoli Quiche
Posted by terrepruitt on March 1, 2021
A long time ago I purchased a quiche making kit from the place that we get our organic produce delivery from. It was really good. I decided to get the dough again to make a quiche. When I had ordered the dough I didn’t know what I was going to put in the quiche. But then I came across the ham we had for Christmas and we had received broccoli in the produce box so I thought that would be good. This is a quiche recipe with an idea of additions. I didn’t really measure the additions (I am guesstimating the amounts below) and they turned out to be too much.
I used the same ingredients and ideas as the last quiche, except this time I put in ham and broccoli. I actually put in way too much stuff as it spilled all over the oven. It was very tasty.

Potato, Ham, and Broccoli Quiche
—potatoes (2 small)
—onion (3/4 cup)
—ham (1/2 cup)
—broccoli (1 cup)
—1 12 ounce ball of pie dough
—1 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella
—6 eggs
—1 cups of half and half
—Salt
—pepper
I cut up the potato, I chopped some onion, I cut up the ham, and I cut up the broccoli. I sauteed some chopped onion then added the potato. I cooked the potato not all the way done because I wanted to add the ham AND it was going to be cooking in the oven for 50 minutes. Then I added the ham to the pan. The ham was already cooked so I as just trying to get the potatoes to get that yummy ham flavor. I added the broccoli last and barely let it cook because I like raw broccoli and I knew it still had to cook in the oven.
I followed the instructions from the recipe card from my first quiche.
Let the dough sit out for at about 30 minutes.
Preheat oven to 375° F. Lightly grease pie pan with oil. Dust countertop and flatten the ball of dough. Use a little more flour on top of the circle and, using a rolling pin, make the circle larger – large enough to fit into the pie pan. Place the dough in the pie pan, making sure it covers the bottom and can be pressed into the sides. Place the pie pan in the freezer to chill while you make the filling.
(I used an electric hand mixer.) Beat the eggs, then add the half and half, then using a spoon, stir in 1 cup of the cheese, add salt and pepper if you would like.
Put your additions (for me that was the potatoes, ham, and broccoli) in the pie pan, then pour the egg mixture on top. Stir bit to make sure it is all mixed together. Then bake for about 40 minutes. Check to see that it is pretty much done – not jiggly, then put the rest of the cheese on top and cook until melted. The quiche should be fully cooked before eating, so make sure it is not jiggling.
Serve hot.

Camera Off
Posted by terrepruitt on February 22, 2021
As you may know I teach a small variety of movement classes online. I am so fortunate that some of the students I taught in person wanted to keep moving and they were willing to do it online via Zoom. For me, part of the draw of doing it live via Zoom is that I get to see the students. I feel more connected to them when we are all online together and I am doing a live class. When I teach I have Zoom set to “gallery” so I can see all the students. But I feel I need to emphasize that having the camera on when you attend a class is not necessary. There are days when having the camera on may not work. I want to make sure that people know that they have that option.
I know there were some days when I just got up in enough time to take a class (when I am attending someone else’s class) and I don’t want to have the camera on. Sometimes when I am taking a class I don’t want to set up the computer at just the right angle in just the right spot. Sometimes it is easier for me to just have it where I can see the monitor and I don’t want to be concerned with what the instructor – and everyone in the class – is seeing. There are a million reasons why you may not want the camera on and that is ok. It is actually really great that we can “show up to an exercise class” and we don’t have to be concerned with what we look like or how bad the traffic is.
Having the camera transmit the video is optional and it can change every time you take a class. In my classes I want to make sure no one is feeling pressured into having the camera on. I know sometimes when I am taking a class with hundreds of people I am confident no one is really going to be focused on me. I have small classes so chances are if someone has it set to gallery they are going to see you so it is completely up to you at the time of the class.
There are a lot of reasons why a student might sign on and say hello, then once we start moving turn the camera off . . . again, it is all up to you and how you want to do it that day – that class.
And, if you want to ensure the camera is not able to see what you don’t want it to see you can always buy something cover it with something like the little covers I bought. I really like those because even if you don’t have your camera on transmitting . . . it is still on.
Having a camera transmit during class is a person choice and there is no pressure to have it on. Check my website for my class schedule.
Cheers!

A Few Ways To Use Yoga Blocks
Posted by terrepruitt on February 15, 2021
When I taught yoga in person, I taught at places that did not have props. I feel it is perfectly fine to not use props while doing Hatha Yoga, in fact, I think sometimes it is better not to have them, but sometimes it is nice to use them. Whether you use them or not could depend on what you want to get out of your practice or in our case we didn’t have them. What we used as a prop was a chair. There are a lot things that can be used as substitutes for yoga props. But wait, what is a yoga prop? There are several common yoga props and now-a-days with yoga being a multi-million dollar business there are hundreds of yoga props you can purchase. The ones I think of as “common” yoga props besides a yoga mat itself are yoga blankets, yoga blocks, a bolster, a strap, and an eye pillow. In this post I am doing to show you some ways you can use a yoga block.
One way you can think of the block is as something to “bring up the floor” and/or something to help support you. There are various types of yoga blocks and I am aware of two sizes, but there may be more. When you go shop for a set of yoga blocks (yes, you usually will want to have two) you will want to think about what you are going to use them for, this will help you decide the size and the material.
Once you decide on which ones to get you will notice that they have three “levels”; high, medium, and low. In some of the photos I am demonstrating two of the levels in one picture. You may also notice that my hand it not always in the correct position – if I were actually doing yoga – because I am using a remote to take pictures. And in some, yes, I cut off my head because it is about the blocks.
In a lunge, a triangle, and extended side angle you can see how it can be used to “bring up the floor”.
A block can be used to rest your head in a wide angle forward fold or a child’s pose.
A block can help with alignment of the hips in a pigeon by supporting the hip/butt of the bent leg from underneath or help with a stretch by support the hips in a bridge.
Blocks can be used (remember there are different levels) to help support knees in a bound angle. In this pose you can not only change the levels of the blocks but the placement . . . they can be closer to the hips to allow the knees to be higher, closer to the knees allowing for a more intense stretch in the inner thighs, or anywhere along the leg. A block can also support your knees in a supine twist. This helps when the knees can’t reach the floor and allows the shoulders to stay connected with the earth.
Blocks can help raise the shoulders in a Downward Facing Dog. They can also bring up the floor and sometimes be higher than your heels in a camel. Again . . . remember blocks have three different levels that can be used.
Some people like to sit on them to raise the hips in sukhasana or maybe even straddle a block for Thunderbolt (not pictured). And there is always something like a supported fish or shavasana.
There are many, many, many ways to use blocks, this is just a small sample, and with many of these a bolster can be substitute. If you don’t have blocks sometimes a pillow or a towel can be used. A small sturdy box might work too, it really depends on what pose it is being used for. With teaching classes online many people have the opportunity to use their own yoga props or things around the house.
I like to teach and practice the idea that yoga is not really done to get into a pose in a specific way, it is practiced to sense the body. The body may never get into the pose as it was supposedly “supposed” to be, but we can practice with intent and gain many benefits along the way.
Do you use yoga blocks in your practice?
