A Dozen Kiwis? Make A Drink

My husband is the plant man at the office. He takes care of the plants. People bring him dead plants (to which he says, “It’s not dead.”) and he brings them back to life. Well, the shelter-in-place started somewhat abruptly and while there was someone there to water the plants, he is not the “Plantman” so my husband wanted to bring home any that have survived this long. So he went into the office the other day and somehow ended up with a dozen kiwis. I know they were from someone in the office, but I didn’t get the story as to how my husband got them. Since no one is supposed to be in the office I believe when someone is going to go in for something they notify the boss or office manager so that everyone else can stay clear, so perhaps they were left there for him as his visit was somewhat scheduled. ANYWAY . . . . a dozen kiwis. My husband LOVES kiwis. I guess I like them but I don’t like to deal with them. The fuzz . . .no thanks. These were non-fuzzy as I ended up eating the skin (just on the very thin slice that was my drink’s garnish).

Anyway . . . I cannot tell you how it came up . . . but it did and now I have a new favorite drink. My husband is a very good bartender as he does a lot of research and “figuring” before he makes a drink. Of course, when one is creating a drink with ingredients on hand and recipes pieced together the first one isn’t always great. But he works to perfect. These ones . . . the very first ones . . . were great!

Here is my husbands’ Kiwi-Tini recipe. He thinks of it as a kiwi-martini-daiquiri and wants to call it a KMD. The fruit isn’t frozen and it is not slushy, so . . . I don’t know. I’m posting it as a:

Kiwi-Tini

Two martini glasses
Muddler and something to muddle in
Drink shaker
Additional strainer
2 kiwis
2 teaspoons of maple syrup
4 ounces of vodka
Ice
Sugar
spoon

Skin the kiwis. Slice the kiwis – save two slices (for garnish) . . . then chop the remaining kiwi slices. Muddle the kiwis. Use some of the kiwi juice to wet the rims of the glasses. Dip the rims in sugar. Put the vodka, maple syrup, muddle kiwis, and a few cubes of ice in drink shaker. Shake the shaker mixing up all the ingredients.

Then using the strainer that is in the shaker (ours has a strainer) pour equal amount of liquid in each glass.  As all the muddled kiwi will clog this strainer use an additional strainer to strain as you pour the rest of the liquid (equally) into each glass. You are using strainers to keep the kiwi from plopping in the glass. Also not letting the kiwi just plop will allow you to distribute it evenly between the two glasses. Use a spoon to fish out the ice cubes and then to evenly distribute the muddled kiwi into each glass. Garnish with the slices you saved early.

This is a very refreshing drink. The day he made them we had record breaking heat so it was soooooo perfect. The kiwis are a bit tart and pair perfectly with the syrup and sugar. I think if I were using simple syrup I would start out with less as it will just add sweet and not any rich flavor.  But, that is just my sense, I don’t know because we have just been using maple syrup when things call for simple syrup.

As I mentioned, these kiwis were not fuzzy.  I thought my husband had washed the fuzz off, but he did not.  He also did not peel the kiwis we used as garnish (can you see?) . . . that is how I ended up eating the skin.  It was so thin, I thought I would try it.

So, doesn’t this sound delicious?  Let me know what you think after you try it!

Delicious Things In Small Packages

So last Friday I received an organic produce box.  And I was actually a little surprised because I thought I had selected what I wanted in it, but that must have been the box before.  So I ended up with some things I don’t know that I would have kept in the box.  You might remember I first signed up to receive an organic box of produce as a way to get “stuck” with fruits and vegetables that I would pass by in the store or at a Farmer’s Market.  If I don’t know what it is, I am not likely to buy it and try to deal with it.  But when it is delivered to me then I am “forced” to learn about it . . . .well, at least learn a way to cook it and/or (just) eat it.  This past week we received Kiwi Berries.  I have never heard of Kiwi Berries before.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueMy hubby had kindly left the produce box on the counter and I was able to snap a few pictures then put the produce away then go off to my Nia class on Friday.  I asked a couple of ladies if they had ever heard of them and they had not.  At that point I had not really had a chance to look at them or look them up.  It was receive and leave.  While we were talking I quickly looked it up because there were curious, too.  The pictures showed the Kiwi Berries sliced and they looked just like kiwis (the fruit, not the bird).

These berries actually look like kiwis, but much smaller and not hairy.  And when you cut them open they look exactly like kiwis.  They are great.  So much better . . . to me . . . . than kiwis.  With kiwis you have to peel them and sometimes that hairy stuff gets on the kiwi and . . . . I just don’t like it.  My husband says he doesn’t mind it.  Well, that could be that most of the time when I give him a kiwi I have already peeled it and sliced it.  I like to make it easy for him to eat while he is at work.  So I am the one dealing with hairy skin.

Since they were such an easy to eat fruit, I didn’t even look to see any recipes or anything.  Once I saw the pictures of them looking like kiwis I figured you can just eat them as it and we did.

“Actinidia arguta (hardy kiwi) is a perennial vine native to Japan, Korea, Northern China, and Russian Siberia. It produces a small fruit resembling the kiwifruit.

The fruit are referred to as Hardy kiwifruit, kiwi berry, arctic kiwi, baby kiwi, dessert kiwi, grape kiwi, northern kiwi, or cocktail kiwi and are edible, berry or grape-sized fruit similar to kiwifruit in taste and appearance . . . . Often sweeter than the kiwifruit, hardy kiwifruit can be eaten whole and need not be peeled.”

I am seeing sites that say the kiwi berries are a good source of vitamin C, fiber potassium, vitamin E, and magnesium.

They are like bite sized dessert.  If you like them, I am sure you can use them like you would use any berry or fruit; in a salad, as a topping for a pie, cake, or dish of ice cream or yogurt.  They can be pack in a lunch or eaten as a snack.  I am happy that I received something new to me in my produce box.  That is one reason why I started getting it.  But now that they allow us to pick what we want, I am not always being adventurous.  Sometimes I forget to check my order.  I am glad I forgot to check this week!

Can’t Come Up With Ideas

As you may know, I have some things on my mind. The longer it goes on the more difficult it is to function normally. We still receive a small box of organic produce every other week.  Here is what we received in our box this week. I looked at it and thought, “Oh nice.” But not my normal “Ooooooo, what can I do with this and that?  I can do this . . . . . I can do that . . . . ” So I was thinking that perhaps you can help me. I know many of you are good cooks so I was thinking you could give me some ideas on what to with all these lovely fruits and veggies.

There is some rainbow chard. What do you do with that? I usually saute it with a little olive oil, garlic, and onions.  More like than not I add it to some ground turkey and then we eat it like that or it can be put on top of rice or put inside a tortilla. Can chard be roasted/baked like kale? Making chard chips?

What about radishes? Are there anything to do with them, but put them in salads? That is what I do with them, put them in salads.

What about grapefruit? Doesn’t seem like my husband or I like them? What do you do with it?

The asparagus is gone. I roasted it.  It was really thick so I peeled the bottom.  I was actually cooking four other things in the oven so I had to use a smaller pan than normal to cook the asparagus so I cut it in half.  The bottom portion I also sliced in half.  It was yummy.  I love asparagus.  I am certain I will receive more, so maybe I should get your ideas on how to cook that now.

What about carrots? Again I put them in salads, raw. What about you?  I don’t like them candied, so that is a recipe I can skip.

How about kiwis? Do you just eat them?  My husband just eat them. They are another thing I would put on salads. Do you have others ideas on how to use them?

Ooooooo and the new-to-me white spring onions. Should they be cooked whole and eaten that way or used as I would a regular onion?

What about apples? Seems as if we get them in every box? Sometimes they just stack up. I like really CRISP sweet apples and some times the apples we get are not crisp – they are the mushy kind – so I don’t like to just eat them. Last night I used one I had from the last box to make my hubby a “Porky-Pork Chop”. What do you do with hem? I guess I could just bake ’em, huh?

I also know that I can use the carrot greens in a smoothie but I have never done that.  Can the radish greens be used too?

So help me out.  Think for me because with this whole process dragging on I am starting to get a little worn out and the everyday things are not so everyday.
