Movie Traditions

Posted by terrepruitt on November 6, 2019

Do you have any movies that you watch over the Holidays? Or movies that you watch for specific events? Last night my husband came home and he said, “Do you want me to wait or should I start the movie without you?” I had forgotten the date so I didn’t know what he was talking about, then he said, “It’s the 5th.” As he was saying it I realized what day it was and what we were going to watch. We had talked about it on Saturday. So we watch V For Vendetta on the 5th of November.

I am listen to a book and their family tradition is to watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Thanksgiving. I know, from posts on Facebook from my friends that some people watch Love Actually over the Christmas Holiday.

What about you? Do you have any movie traditions? Do you have movies you watch on specific days or specific events?

The 5th Of November Eggs In Toast

Posted by terrepruitt on November 6, 2017

“Remember, remember, the 5th of November
The Gunpowder Treason and plot;
I know of no reason why Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.”

Perhaps you have seen the movie V For Vendetta? The only reason I have heard of Guy Fawkes.

Well, in the movie featured twice is what they call Eggy In A Basket. Since the bread is not really shaped like a basket and there are so many recipes where you put something – sometimes bread, sometimes meat, sometimes hashbrowns, etc. – in a muffin tin and actually make a sort of basket, I don’t feel like calling them that. But . . . I did feel like trying to make them. In the movie they make them in a pan. And my husband has made them in a pan. But I was on my way to teach a Nia class, but I wanted to feed my husband, so I needed to do it in a way that I could leave it to cook while I was “doing”. So I used the oven. You know, my favorite cooking appliance.

Anyway . . . here is what I did to make it.

1 egg
1 piece of bread
butter
1 tablespoon of grated cheese
salt
pepper

Line a baking sheet with foil and place it in the oven. Preheat the oven to 400° F.

Using a circular cookie cutter or a glass cut a hole in the middle of the bread. Butter both sides of the bread.

Take the hot pan out of the oven and place the bread on the foil. Put a little oil, butter, or non-stick cooking spray on the foil where the hole is. Then crack the egg into the hole. Sprinkle the cheese on the egg and bread. Sprinkle on the salt and the pepper.

Then put the pan into the oven for about 15 mins. CHECK on it in 7 to 10 minutes. If you decide you want your egg less cooked take it out sooner than 15 minutes.*

*for two, as you see in the pictures, double ingredients.

As you can see from the pictures I used a wine glass to make the circle in the bread. The rim of the glass has to be thin enough to “cut” the bread. The one glass we have that has a thin rim was too small. The other glasses that were the right size have to thick of a rim. This wine glass was perfect. It had a thin rim and was the perfect size.

I don’t eat fried eggs and to me a baked egg is pretty much fried, so I didn’t have it. But my husband said it was good. It was easy, so I’ll probably make it again if he wants it.

This, to me, would also make a good thing to make for a small crowd.  It was really easy and it would be easy to make a dozen.  Say for a brunch party.

Something New For Christmas This Year

Posted by terrepruitt on November 6, 2012

I love teaching Nia, but it does not earn as much as my corporate job.  I have always loved shopping for Christmas presents.  I am a catalog shopper.  My hubby and I tend to watch the same movies over and over, so while we are watching V For Vendetta for the 50th time, I will thumb through a catalog.  Plus at one time catalog shopping was not that common and very unique items could be acquired that way.  Now with the internet you can get anything from anywhere so many things are not as unique.  I don’t shop that much any longer.  My friends, family, and I are very blessed and we have enough, so I don’t buy them all the cute decorations any longer.  I try to stick to stuff that will be used, sometimes I really feel strongly about something that might not rank up there in usefulness so I succumb, but mostly we try to keep it useful.  I am not one to go out and do my shopping all at once.  To me that makes it a chore.  I like to do my shopping throughout the year.  So I just look and if I see something that I think someone will like, I get it.  For me that also helps out with the I-don’t-make-corporate-bucks because it spreads the cost out over the year.  One problem with shopping all year long is I don’t have a lot of space to put stuff because I have so much stuff.  So I end up putting it in odd places wherever it will fit.  Yes, I have forgotten about things.  Just recently I gave someone a birthday present I bought for her years ago because I forgot about it.  Found it.  Forgot about it.  Found it again . . . and you get the picture.  Which leads me to my point — yes, I have a point!  Instead of keeping a list of what I have gotten over the year I have been taking pictures.  I am finding this to be much easier to keep track.  I can just glance at the picture and remember exactly what I got for whom.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaI must not have taken very good notes in the past because I would look at the list and think, “What?  What kind of ‘funny T-shirt’ did I get him?”  Then I would have to go look at the actual shirt to know which one I got so I didn’t buy the same thing.  I mean I bought it once it would make sense that I would be attracted to it again right.  And yes, you would think I could remember what I bought, but sometimes if stuff is on sale you buy it, then months later you remember you like it but forgot you bought it.  So I am finding that this picture record keeping is working very well.

For some people I buy a few things, so I just piled it all together and took the picture and labeled that picture “So and so”.  So now I know if I am “done” with that person’s give buying or if I want to get a few more things.  Then I have all the pictures in one folder on my computer and I just pop in there to see, “Did I by her something already or not?”  So much easier than trying to decipher my list.

Also with the picture I can snap a shot of where I have hidden the item so I won’t forget that either!  Yeah, I have done that too, I know I have purchased it but I can’t remember where I stashed it.  Yeah, I should just clean out a closet and have a designated space, but . . . . for now I have adopted this new method that seems to be working just great!

Do you shop early for Christmas gifts?  Are you a Christmas Eve shopper?  Do spread out your gift buying?

Fresh Figs So Unlike Fig Newtons

Posted by terrepruitt on September 15, 2012

As you may know I’ve been having an organic box of produce delivered every other week.  My hope was in addition to getting fresh, yummy produce I would receive some new things that I normally would not have come home with from the grocery store or farmers market.  Well, up until last week, I think I had received some pretty basic things.  Different varieties of fruits and veggies, but nothing too new, right?  I am asking because I don’t remember.  Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaI am thinking I did receive something else I hadn’t had before, but I can’t remember what it was.  Oh, except those Shishito peppers that did end up being thrown away.  After I tasted one every time I just looked at the container I felt like I needed something to drink to get that bitter taste out of my mouth so I couldn’t bring myself to cook them.  In my last box I received a container of beautiful figs.  Mission figs.  I remember I tried some figs last November.  I remember it was November because we had gathered to watch V for Vendetta and one of the snacks was figs on goat cheese.  I don’t remember have eaten figs before because they just seemed icky to me.  I think I had only been presented with dried figs and I don’t like dried fruit.  I actually KNEW I didn’t like figs because of fig newtons.  Now, I know that a fig newton really isn’t a fig and I should have not based my liking of the fruit on such a thing, but I had.  So here I was with a container of figs.  I had no idea what to do with them.  What do you do with a fig?

So I asked a few people.  Believe it or not their response was the same, “Just eat ’em.”  Um . . . no thanks.  My husband likes to just eat them and he ate one.  When I told him I didn’t know what to do with them he said to just give him the go-ahead and he would eat them.  He said they were good.

The bulk of the recipes I found online seemed to be tarts, pastries, desserts, and ooey-gooey things.  And salads.  Sigh.  I thought I would go to the store and get some goat cheese and try making that dish that I had eaten before, but when I went to the store I found crumbled goat cheese and not a “brick” for slicing.

I can’t remember exactly, but I believe the snack was a piece of fig on top of a slice of goat cheese, with honey drizzled on it.  Really rich, but very yummy.  Kind of desserty.

I was happy and excited I received something I hadn’t had before, but I was stumped as to what to do with it/them.  Even though I bragged about Farm Fresh To You having recipes on their site, I kept forgetting to look at it.

Do you like figs?  How do you eat them?  Do you know a savory dish that uses figs?

The 5th of November – V for Vendetta

Posted by terrepruitt on November 5, 2011

I spent most of the day working on learning another Nia routine.  Some songs, as I have shared before, are easier for me to learn than others.  This time I am actually I am having some issues with a copule of the katas.  Today is the 5th of November.  Back in 1605 there was a plan to assassinate the King by blowing up the House of Lords during opening of Parliament.  This plot is referred to as “The Gunpowder Plot of 1605” or “Gunpowder Treason Day”.  There is a lot of history surrounding this day and it’s celebrations.  For some it is somewhat of a “cult classic” type of day.  With the movie V for Vendetta leading the way.

The first time I saw the movie I really didn’t get it.  I was distracted by the main character and waiting for him to reveal his face.  But, being that my husband is the type of person who watches a movie over and over and over, I was able to actually understand the movie.  I think it is one of those movies that you need to see a few times to really understand all that is going on.  Or you need to be paying close attention the first time you watch it and not be distracted by the mask.  There is a lot going on in the movie.  I took me several times to understand certain parts.  Each time I watched it I understood more.  I don’t want to say too much and give any parts away.

I will say that the guy who plays Mr. Smith in the Matrix movies is in it.  It also has Natalie Portman and Stephen Fry it in.

There are some very good quotes from the movie, with the speech from the main character leading the way:

“Voilà! In view, a humble vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of Fate. This visage, no mere veneer of vanity, is a vestige of the vox populi, now vacant, vanished. However, this valorous visitation of a bygone vexation stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish these venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition! The only verdict is vengeance; a vendetta held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous. [laughs] Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose, so let me simply add that it’s my very good honour to meet you and you may call me “V”.”

And there is:

“People should not be afraid of their governments. Governments should be afraid of their people.”

“Beneath this mask there is more than flesh. Beneath this mask there is an idea, Mr. Creedy, and ideas are bulletproof.”

“God is in the rain.”

“Our integrity sells for so little, but it is all we really have. It is the very last inch of us, but within that inch, we are free.”

These quotes might give you an idea as to the type of movie it is.  It is about a country that got off track due to its people allowing its one and only ruler, the Chancellor, to dictate everything.  There is one guy (or Guy . . . ha, ha!) who thinks it should be different and is willing to take a stand.  Although, I don’t agree with the WAY he is going about it, I understand why he thinks it is the only way. The movie takes you through the events that transpired to get the country where it is.  The path it takes you on is not straight by any means and the way it is revealed is very cleaver.  But as I said before, it took me several viewings to get it.

For some reason . . . maybe just because it includes a date in it, my husband and I have always wanted to have a party on the 5th of November.  But of course, sometimes the 5th of November is a weekday and having people over is not an option because at the time of the talk of the party it has always included the fact that we have to do it at midnight because that has a significance in the movie too.  But this year, the year the 5th falls on a Saturday we have been a bit side-lined.  We have friends that are fans of the movie so we are going over there to watch it.  Should be fun.

Have you seen the movie?  What did you think?  Ever thought of having a party on the 5th of November?
