Spot’s Heart Stone

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThis past Christmas I decided to make gifts for my family and some friends.  I was painting (that will be another post or two) for the first three weeks of December. While I had my paints out I asked my hubby if he would mind if I painted our cat’s heart stone. As usual, just like when I am cooking, I didn’t think to take a picture of it until I was partly done. The first picture I had painted the green background and some of the blue flowers. That is when I thought to take pictures of it – AFTER I had already started – so that we could see the difference between the faded colors and the new colors.

The other picture shows the end result. It is nice to have the bright colors out in the yard. It also helped that my husband spent some time out in the yard gathering up all the leaves that were covering the stone. Our lemon tree drops a lot of leaves so in combination with all of the peanut shells we have in the yard, the stone was covered. It was covered AND faded so it was impossible to see.

Before bringing it it, my husband kindly washed it off, making sure to get all of the dirt off so the paint would stick.

I think I did ok. I am not an artist. I was just trying to brighten it up.  And, that I did. I wasn’t going for shading or any depth.  I do wish I would have taken a picture of it before I did any painting at all. But I just didn’t think about it until halfway through.

We actually have a lot of other things in the yard I would like to paint to help brighten them up.  I mean, the reason we put them in the yard is because they were cute and colorful.  Well, they fade after time so they need refreshing.  I need to set aside some time to do that.  We have a couple of walking stone sets that could use painting and several little yard decorations.  Yup.  That will be something I will do.

I like painting.  I need to set aside some time in order to paint.

Do you have a hobby you would like to make more time to do?  What do you think of Spot’s Heart Stone?

Tie-Dyed Bendy

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitIn my last post I mentioned family, friends, and both Nia and yoga students giving me cat things or things related to yoga this past Christmas.  I received a lot of cute things. And I received a lot of thoughtful gifts. I want to share another one. (I know I have already posted about a few.) One of my students gave me a Gumby. Do you member Gumby? He is very flexible and bendy. She said it was because she called me Gumby, although I don’t ever remember hearing her call me that.

He has a tie-dyed shirt on!  So cute!  She made a tie-dyed shirt for him.  She actually “tie-dyed” it.  At first I thought she just found some material that looked tie-dyed and then she used it to sew a shirt.  But nooooo!  She actually used pens and colored the shirt making it tie-dyed.  For those of you who have never taken one of the classes you might not realize that I wear tie-dyed shirts.  They are kind of like my “uniform”.  So this was super cute.  It made me laugh.  We were going to lunch the day she gave it to me and I had to bring it into the restaurant to show everyone.  I also wanted to share it with you because it was so cute.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitI also have some Gumby facts because this particular Gumby is a 50th anniversary edition Gumby so the packaging came with interesting facts listed about Gumby.  I can say that I really didn’t know that much about Gumby.  So these were things I didn’t know about Gumby.

-Gumby’s TV debut was on the Howdy Doody Show in 1956.

-Gumby got his own show that year.  The Gumby Show.

-The Gumby Show aired from 1956 to 1968.

-By 1966, Gumby sales break all records.

-It takes 1,440 still-frame pictures to make 1 minute of clay animation.

-In 1988 100 new Gumby episodes were produced.

-There are 214 Gumby episodes in existence.

-Gumby’s first feature film was release in 1995.

So there.  Now you know some Gumby facts.

Do you remember Gumby?  Did you watch him on TV?  Do you remember his side kick?

My family, students, and friends know me so well. I received such cute cat things and wonderful yoga related things this past Christmas season. Look at these super cute mugs. Such a bright addition to the kitchen. Now, if I could just get the Christmas stuff put away!

Here’s this week’s Friday Photo.

Christmas Music I’m Listening To In 2017

Posted by terrepruitt on December 13, 2017

While I was decorating for Christmas and making some Christmas gifts I was listening to Christmas music. I was listening to Pandora. I have a few Christmas CDs, but I thought I would listen to something else to see if there was any new stuff out there. To me it seems as if anyone sings they’ve done a Christmas album. Most often it is the same Christmas songs over and over. I have to admit that sometimes I like a new version of a traditional Christmas song. I can still like the old version, but it is nice to hear a new take on it. Well, this year on Pandora I was introduced to a Christmas album a couple of years old that had new-to-me songs on it.  PLUS there are two versions of two songs that I didn’t even think I liked until I heard this group’s version. A couple of the songs I liked so much, I talked my hubby into an early Christmas gift of the album. The album I am talking about is Train’s Christmas in Tahoe.

First of all, last year was the first time – that I know of – that I had heard Joni Mitchell’s River (1971). And the version I heard I did not like. I think it turns out that I just don’t like any Christmas songs that particular artist sings on her album (2014). She has WAY TOO MANY dramatic pauses and they are WAAAAAAAY too long. Geez. It is to the point of annoying. So I thought I didn’t like the song. But I like Train’s version. Just now, before I typed this, I listened to their version then listened to the other artist’s version. I realized – as I FORCED myself to listen to the whole song -I had never listened to the whole song by that artist because I just don’t like it or so I thought. Turns out it is her version I don’t like.  I need to listen to Joni Mitchell’s version to see how it is for me.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThen another song I have always really not liked until Train’s version is Happy Xmas (War is Over). I cannot tolerate John Lennon’s version of that song at all. That high pitched voice(s) on that track just really grates on my nerves. I am sure there are many out there that love that song . . . but I was so very relieved to hear not everyone likes it. I thought I was the only one. But I like Train’s version.

There is not one song on this album that I skip. And I was really happy to see that the album/CD has bonus tracks on it. It was purchased from Amazon so we had advanced access to it on Amazon music, but when the CD arrived it had more songs on it. Yay. Amazon music has 15 tracks, but the CD has 20! And one of them I don’t ever remember ever having heard.  Have you heard of The Cherry Tree Carol?

What Christmas music are you listening to?  What is your favorite Christmas song?

Kitty On The Tree

Posted by terrepruitt on December 30, 2016

I know, I have done ornaments for the last two weeks, but I really love Christmas and all the decorations and my ornaments!  Hardly anyone sees all our great ornaments so I am taking advantage of my blog and posting Christmas Tree ornaments!  This will be the last one, at least that is the plan.  Who knows, I might take a picture I love as I am “undecorating” and want to post it.  I will try to refrain.  But this is a NEW ornament.  I received it as a gift and it is just so cute.  She is BIG, but light, so it will be easy to find a spot for her on the tree every year.  YAY!  Love my new addition. So this is my last Friday Photo of 2016.  I will be keeping this “feature” in 2017.  This is also my LAST post of 2016.

Thank you for reading and liking.  Thank you even more for commenting.  I love interacting with readers.  I wish all of you a happy and fun New Year’s Eve.  And I wish all of you a GREAT 2017!

To Open Or To Wait? That Is The Question

Posted by terrepruitt on December 19, 2016

So do you wait or open?  A friend and I were talking last week, she was saying that she was making some gifts and she was going to try to get them in the mail but wasn’t sure when that would be.  She didn’t think she would make it in time for them to arrive at my house so that I could take them with me to the gathering that was planned with the recipients of said gifts.  I suggested she send them to me anyway because that would give me and the other recipients motivation to meet again.  Then I started laughing because I said if she sent them to me I would open mine right away.  And she said, “You should!”  Then we started talking about the practice of waiting to open or opening right away.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitUnless someone tells me specifically not to open a gift until the actual occasion, I am going to open it.  If it comes in the mail or they give it to me in person, I am going to open it.  I am not one to wait or to expect others to wait.  I think it is perfectly fine to open it right away.  I get too excited to wait!

I know that some people like to wait.  They think that if you receive a Christmas gift in the mail you should wait until Christmas to open it.  I am not saying that waiting is wrong or that opening the present right away is wrong.  I think it is between you and then giver. I think that whatever you want to do or however you feel – is right.

Because I like to open my gifts right away, I loved her response.  She said, “You should!  You should open it right away!  Why wait?”  And the enthusiasm with which she said it just made me laugh.  I loved that!

I might have mentioned it in a post before – and this might even be “too early” for a lot of you – but one year my husband and I were in Fry’s Electronics and he saw something he wanted for Christmas.  Perfect.  To me, if someone can tell me what they want and I can get it — I love it.  So I bought it.  And we decided not to wait until Christmas to use it.  Well, it happened to be October.  So, yeah, that might be a little early, but it was awesome.  It didn’t just sit in a box in the closet.  We used it.  We got three months use out of it before the occasion.  It was a CD/DVD Jukebox.  It is a CD/DVD player but it holds something like 300 hundred discs.  We used it and we still use it!

So what do you think?  Are you a waiter?  Or an opener?  Do you like people to wait?  Or do you want them to open it right away?

Christmas Brilliance

Posted by terrepruitt on December 25, 2012

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaIt is Christmas, and while I did not have to “work” — as in teach a Nia class, I still have to “work” — as in post a blog post.  Had I been a little more organized I would have had it written and had it post on a timer, but I was not that prepared.  I had been thinking about what to write when last Monday after Nia one of my students was talking about one of her family’s traditions.  I had asked her to give me more info or to write about it.  But as I had been interrupting her story, I stopped my line of questioning/instruction and she finished her story and then I never got back to asking her more information.  Then on Wednesday I forgot.  I was thinking I would see her on Christmas Eve, but I did not.  So I am going to share her tradition without a lot details as to how it works for her family because I don’t know them.  I think the idea is so cute I wanted to share.  THEN, I got one of the greatest Christmas gifts ever last night and I wanted to share a bit of it too.  So Merry Christmas.  This is me sharing a tradition of one of my students that maybe you would like to do yourself and a beautiful gift I received.

First the cool tradition.  I haven’t heard a lot of the details but it sounds as if my student’s kids are going to moving out soon.  I believe that is one of the reasons she shared with us the tradition she started when they were young.  She has had her kids gift each other a Christmas ornament every year.  She was saying, when I came into the conversation, that this way they will have a start on having ornaments for their tree when they move out AND they will sentimental value.  Each ornament will be a memory.  She had said that one year her son crafted a little birdcage and put a picture of a bird in it to represent their family pet.  I thought that was so cute.  Not only did her son have an ornament for his sister, but he had made it.  You may know from reading some of my previous posts that I LOVE Christmas Ornaments.  I love the entire process of unwrapping each one to hang on the tree.  It is as if I am receiving little mini Christmas gifts with each ornament I unwrap and place on the tree.  And many have memories attached, so to me decorating the tree is a lovely process and tradition.  So I really, really, really, really, really LOVED this idea.  As I mentioned, I loved it so much I wanted to share it.  I think it is great to have kids receive “their own” ornaments that they can take with them when they move out and that will have meaning for them.Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba

Now one of the greatest gifts I received was a book.  Apparently my nephew-in-law has a brilliant girlfriend.  She had a book made for his sisters that contains their grandma’s favorite recipes and a party tip.  His girlfriend designed it to have the actual copy of the recipe placed on the page along with family pictures.  You might have read some post on my blog that shared the fact that their grandmother (my mother-in-law) died last year in November.  My sister-in-law (John’s sister) is a smart cookie too and she knows a great idea when she sees it and she asked if she could use the book template for gifts also.  So SHE swapped out some of the pictures to include more of the recipient’s family.  So the ones made for the girls have more pictures pertaining to them.  The one made for my husband and I has more pictures pertaining to us and so on.  FANTABULOUS!  It is awesome!

I am in awe of BOTH of these things . . . . the ornament tradition AND this wonderful recipe book.  I hope you had a Merry Christmas and the rest of this season is grand for you.

Do you have any holiday traditions to share?  Maybe you have had a custom for a long time?  Maybe you just started one?  Did you get a gift that you are excited about that you want to share?  Tell us!

Something New For Christmas This Year

Posted by terrepruitt on November 6, 2012

I love teaching Nia, but it does not earn as much as my corporate job.  I have always loved shopping for Christmas presents.  I am a catalog shopper.  My hubby and I tend to watch the same movies over and over, so while we are watching V For Vendetta for the 50th time, I will thumb through a catalog.  Plus at one time catalog shopping was not that common and very unique items could be acquired that way.  Now with the internet you can get anything from anywhere so many things are not as unique.  I don’t shop that much any longer.  My friends, family, and I are very blessed and we have enough, so I don’t buy them all the cute decorations any longer.  I try to stick to stuff that will be used, sometimes I really feel strongly about something that might not rank up there in usefulness so I succumb, but mostly we try to keep it useful.  I am not one to go out and do my shopping all at once.  To me that makes it a chore.  I like to do my shopping throughout the year.  So I just look and if I see something that I think someone will like, I get it.  For me that also helps out with the I-don’t-make-corporate-bucks because it spreads the cost out over the year.  One problem with shopping all year long is I don’t have a lot of space to put stuff because I have so much stuff.  So I end up putting it in odd places wherever it will fit.  Yes, I have forgotten about things.  Just recently I gave someone a birthday present I bought for her years ago because I forgot about it.  Found it.  Forgot about it.  Found it again . . . and you get the picture.  Which leads me to my point — yes, I have a point!  Instead of keeping a list of what I have gotten over the year I have been taking pictures.  I am finding this to be much easier to keep track.  I can just glance at the picture and remember exactly what I got for whom.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaI must not have taken very good notes in the past because I would look at the list and think, “What?  What kind of ‘funny T-shirt’ did I get him?”  Then I would have to go look at the actual shirt to know which one I got so I didn’t buy the same thing.  I mean I bought it once it would make sense that I would be attracted to it again right.  And yes, you would think I could remember what I bought, but sometimes if stuff is on sale you buy it, then months later you remember you like it but forgot you bought it.  So I am finding that this picture record keeping is working very well.

For some people I buy a few things, so I just piled it all together and took the picture and labeled that picture “So and so”.  So now I know if I am “done” with that person’s give buying or if I want to get a few more things.  Then I have all the pictures in one folder on my computer and I just pop in there to see, “Did I by her something already or not?”  So much easier than trying to decipher my list.

Also with the picture I can snap a shot of where I have hidden the item so I won’t forget that either!  Yeah, I have done that too, I know I have purchased it but I can’t remember where I stashed it.  Yeah, I should just clean out a closet and have a designated space, but . . . . for now I have adopted this new method that seems to be working just great!

Do you shop early for Christmas gifts?  Are you a Christmas Eve shopper?  Do spread out your gift buying?

Any 2012 Resolutions or Goals?

Posted by terrepruitt on January 3, 2012

Whew!  For some reason I am feeling pressure about my first post in 2012!  I feel I need to write more about Nia.  Well, more accurately, I would LIKE to write more posts about Nia and my Nia classes, but I don’t have to start out the New Year with a Nia post.  I feel pressure to make some grand announcement about something spectacular I plan to achieve in 2012.  I have been looking at people’s resolutions.  I don’t typically make resolutions.  Some of the resolutions I am seeing kind of strike me as odd to be resolutions, yet, at the same time if people really need to declare these things for a new year, then by all means I hope they succeed.  Yet, I am still somewhat surprised that people need to resolve to smile at strangers, encourage people to do their best, say thank you, tell their loved ones they love them, stop and smell the roses, etc.  I guess we get busy and we forget to do these things, but to me they are just part of life like brushing your teeth so I don’t need to make a new year the time I start to do these.  I was watching TMZ (Yeah, sometimes it is all that is on) and the main guy was saying something along the lines of why make resolutions and do it at the start of a new year when you can just do it at anytime of the year.  Made me laugh.  This year I am going to put some things at the fore front of my life and make sure they come before other things.  So I am going to make two resolutions.  For some of you, you will think the same as I did in thinking about the stuff I just mentioned.  You might think that these are everyday things, and for some they are, but for me I get busy, distracted, lazy, comfortable, don’t-want-to-be-a-bother, or whatever-my-excuse and I don’t always follow through.

My first resolution has to do with my 31 Day Project.  Ugh!  I started out pretty good with that, but then I went out of town for a weekend and that killed my momentum along with the fact that in December the house gets rearranged AND things come into the house.  There are Christmas decorations and gifts and other things to deal with so December was not a smart time for me to start my project.  Although it encouraged me to do a couple of things, I did not get all done that I was thinking.  So while one of my resolutions will not be to get rid of or fix one thing a day in the year, it is to get organized and to do or complete some of the projects I have sitting around.  Some of the projects have been started and some have not, but I am going to get them done this year.  With the completion of some of these projects that will help with the “getting rid of” and the organizing.  Because as you may know if you have any projects to be done you might have the supplies taking up space and as soon as the project is done you will have that space open.  I will do at least one project a month.  I don’t have 12 lying around, but I know I have at least three and there are at least nine more that I would love to do.

Dance Exercise, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, NiaThe other resolution is to connect with my friends, family, and people in general more.  I am a home body.  Most of the time given a choice between staying at home with my hubby and my cat or getting up, getting ready, fighting the traffic to go out, I am going to stay home.  My couch wins out over putting on makeup and “hard pants” anytime.  My cat and her meditative purring ALWAYS trumps fighting traffic.  Even domestic chores are better to me than traffic.  But when I actually force myself out, I have a great time.  Early Monday morning I was reading a friend’s blog (Zebra Sounds) and she asked her readers what they wished for in 2012 and as I was typing in the comment box that I wanted to connect more, I realized that I had just closed the Facebook page on the event without saying yes because I really wanted to be home with my hubby more than get ready to go out in the cold.  And I realized that it was silly to say “I wish” when it was ME that was in control.  So in the comment I announced I was going back to FB to say yes.  I went, and of course I had a great time.

I realize that visiting face-to-face is not always possible, especially with one of my best friends who just moved away.  So I am allowing phone calls to be part of my “connecting”.  Of course seeing someone in person is often better, but sometimes it is not possible.  And sometimes I forego the phone call because I want an in person visit, but we can’t work our schedules out so then I don’t get anything at all.  Well, I am allowing phone calls to count as connecting because for some of us that is all that we have.  I do understand that sometimes a phone call out of the blue is an interruption so I will not get my feelings hurt when someone can’t talk.  But at least I will have made the effort to connect.

I am going to continue, as I always do, in 2012 to be grateful and thankful for all of my blessings, to be more positive than negative , to smile at strangers, to encourage people, and to tell my loved ones I love them, but I am also going to try to find the top of my desk.  I am also going to try to make room in the corner of my office that is stacked full of stuff.  I am also going to get out more and connect with people.  I am also going to allow phone calls to be considered a good connection and use the phone when I can’t get in a face-to-face visit.  To all of you that succeed at doing these two things, for those of you that consider that them a normal thing, I applaud you.  Maybe you can share with me how you manage to make these things a part of your everyday life and I can learn from your tips.

We all have different life styles so our resolutions really can be very different.  Somethings that are everyday things for some of us are resolutions for others.  Did you make any resolutions?  How about goals?  Did you set any for 2012?
