Nia White Belt P11 – Creating A Sensory Life – 2020

Posted by terrepruitt on September 14, 2020

So this is one of the principles that has changed a bit.  The true core of it hasn’t, but I feel that Nia is trying to make it more accessible to everyone instead of just people that want to teach Nia.  This shift was introduced not too long after I took the Nia White Belt training.  So instead of focusing on the business and marketing required as a Nia teacher, the Nia White Belt Principle #11 focuses on your “life’s purpose”.  So this week we were introduced to Nia White Belt P11 – Creating a Sensory Life.  This is a great principle for when someone is looking for their life’s purpose or when someone wants to hone their purpose or goals.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia online, San Jose Virtual classes, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, Nia Technique, Yin Yoga, stretch classes, online exercise, Zoom classes, virtual yoga, City of San Jose online exercise, live classes via Zoom, Nia White Belt training via ZoomThe triad consists of Body, Nia, and Life with corresponding Purpose, Potential, and Possibility.  Then we have Purpose again as one of the wings along with Philosophy expanding out from the middle which is Sacred Athlete.  That term just does not resonate with me in any way.  In fact if you watch me when someone says it or I read it you may detect a scrunch in my face.  I cannot reconcile any definition of sacred to this principle and certainly not when it is combined with athlete.  But that is ok.  I do not have to agree with everything Nia teaches, nor all of the language they choose to use.  I get the gist of it and that is what is important.

This principal has other language that makes me (somewhat) cringe so I will just share what I understand the core of this principal to be . . . basically search your soul for your purpose and then live daily to move yourself toward that purpose.  When you are living your purpose you will be happy.  In the training today we did some exercises to help guide us towards determining our purpose/goal.  In addition to what we did in class Debbie shared some other tools and exercise to help.

She shared that she has a separate philosophy that she applies to each area of her life.  Her philosophy for her marriage is not the same as for raising her kids . . . that kind of thing.  She also reminded us that our purpose can change.  She encouraged everyone to keep searching and checking in (with ourselves) to always make sure we are moving toward our purpose . . . even if we examine what we are doing and realize that if we keep doing it we will not reach our original goal . . . so that is when we may need to adjust what we are doing or it could even mean we need to re-write our purpose.  It can somewhat be related to how we dance.  We want to move to have pleasurable sensations in our body (for example walking without pain) so we take inventory of our body and our body’s movements and then move in ways that will enable us to reach our goal of pain free (as per my example) walking.  We may at times need to tweak how we are moving in order to reach our goal.

So, to me, this principle is what makes Nia “a holistic fitness practice addressing each aspect of your life – body, mind and soul.”

Do you know what your life’s purpose is?  Do you take steps daily towards it?

Nia White Belt P5 – Awareness – 2020

Posted by terrepruitt on August 5, 2020

First of all, to clarify, Nia uses triads in their training and they are continually updating them, they may change the language or possibly rearrange the order, but they have used and are still using triads.  This week our lesson was on Nia White Belt Principle 5.  It has four triads, one for the main principle and three more to help with understanding the principle and being able to have it.  The Nia White Belt Principle 5 is Awareness.  White Belt is all about the body so Nia White Belt P5 – Awareness is about body sensory awareness.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia online, San Jose Virtual classes, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, Nia Technique, Yin Yoga, stretch classes, online exercise, Zoom classes, virtual yoga, City of San Jose online exercise, live classes via ZoomThe main triad’s three points are: Body, Message, Response.  There is the body and we get messages and there is our response to the messages.  We have a relationship with our physical body and our energy body which are shown on the “wings” of the triad.  Your nose could have a tickle and your body sends you that message.  You have a relationship with that sensation in your body and with the energy/feelings it generates.  And your response could be to scratch your nose.  That is a very simple example.

The idea goes much deeper than that and it has three additional triads.  The first one is about skin, joints, and connective tissue and our perception of pain and pleasure.  The second one is about awareness, stimulation, and self-healing with a temperature gauge for pain and wings of logic and mystery.  And the third is about Dancing Through Life, Living Meditation, and Life as Art with the sacred athlete at the center and body and life as wings.  Dancing Through Life is the “doing” and Living Meditation is the “Non-Doing”.

There is so much that I can say about each triad but I always want to leave a little mystery so that when you get the book or take the training and dive deeper into it yourself you will have somethings still new to you.  I just want to say a few things about some of the points, self-healing in Nia is not telling you that you can heal yourself without medical assistance, it is more to the effect of moving to heal or in a way that allows your body to heal and not cause injury.  If in your dance you step really wide into a sumo stance and you feel pain in your knees, you could “self-heal” by adjusting to a smaller sumo stance.  This is a simple example, but it is about having awareness and moving to stimulate self-healing.

Also, I wanted to get a little more detailed about Dancing Through Life . . . one of my favorite sayings and ideas of Nia.  A part of the idea is to — literally, DANCE THROUGH LIFE.  Again, remember that Nia has a broad definition of “dance”, so this doesn’t mean do the waltz or plies though life, it is more like noticing everything you do is your dance.  Brushing your teeth is your dance, making your dinner is your dance – the DOING of life is your dance,  The non-doing is living meditation.  Stop and notice things.  Then allow Life to be Art.

Remember there is The Nia Technique Book that covers all of this.  As I have been saying the language now in 2020, is a bit different, but the core of the information is the same.  So even though The Nia Technique Book was published in 2004, you would still get a lot out of it.  Also, this training is available to anyone, you don’t have to want to teach Nia, you just have to want to maybe look at things – things that are not new to you – a little differently, from a body centered outlook.  Currently there are many trainings happening (about to happen) online.

What here sparks your interest about Nia White Belt P5 – Awareness?  Are you living in a body that is always in pain?  Do you think of yourself as Dancing Through Life?  Are you living in a body that is always in pain?

Come On Baby Light My Candle

Posted by terrepruitt on February 5, 2020

I may have mentioned on my blog in a past post that I love candles. I love to buy candles. I love to receive candles as gifts. I love to burn candles. I prefer candles that are scented with essential oils. I also lean toward soy candles but I don’t necessarily restrict myself to them. There was a time when my husband didn’t like candles, they pose a certain risk and he didn’t think it was worth it. So I tried to make sure that the candles we had were in jars or were tea lights that could be placed in a holder that was jar like so at least the flames was somewhat contained. But now he is lighting candles even when I am not home. So it was really cool when I received this lighter for Christmas. We have a few like this, but they always seem to be out of fuel. And then we don’t think about it until we go to use it. So the butane doesn’t make it on our shopping list – ever, it seems like. So this one I received was an exciting change.

Yeah, you plug it in and it charges.  I received it as a Christmas gift after Christmas so it hasn’t really needed charging, but after we used it a few days I charged it anyway. The site claims it takes 1-1.5 hours to charge and that a full charge is good for up to 300 lights. Wow! It is easy to use once you get the hang of it. I find that putting the wick in between the prongs is not the way it works, so as soon as I got the hang of it, I can light a candle now without clicking it five times. So, with 300 hundred lights per charge I see it lasting a LONG time before it needs to be charged again. I think it is so cool.

This one is awesome. And it is super awesome because my friend that gave it to me knows I love blue and she got me a blue one! They come in at least 13 different colors.

The site says it is “gas appliance safe” so even if you don’t light candles, if you have gas appliances to light it might be something you would be interested in.

It makes a noise that one of my cats DOES NOT LIKE.  She runs away.  The other day I lit a candle using a match and she didn’t even look up, but if she sees me pick up the lighter she runs.  Which is fine by me, I would rather my pets be afraid of things that can hurt them then to be curious and get injured.  But I try not to use it when she is around, I don’t like to scare her.

Aside from it scaring my cat, it is super cool.

So, what do you think? Do you think it is nearly as cool as I think it is? Do you use lighters?

Cool Wreath

Posted by terrepruitt on January 5, 2018

Well, since it is not yet the Epiphany, maybe I can eek out one more Christmas decoration. And actually, I did not plan this at all. I was waiting at the reception desk at the community center today after teaching Nia and I saw this wreath. I think it is gorgeous AND a great idea. I am so bummed I got rid of all my dad’s books. This is exactly the kind of thing that would have been perfect to make with them. It would have been beautiful and reminded me of my dad. Well, maybe there is one or two left that I can use. So, that is another reason I want to post this as my Friday Photo, as a reminder of a craft I would like to attempt for Christmas this year.

What do you think? Do you think it is cool?

Pretty Yard

Posted by terrepruitt on August 11, 2017

I teach at several different places. I teach yoga at two different community centers and I teach Nia at one community center and two different YMCAs. This is what I consider the “backyard” of one of the YMCAs. It is so pretty with the different color trees. One day while I was waiting to teach class I noticed how gorgeous it was outside and I snapped a few pictures. When I am looking through my pictures I always see this and want to post it. I think I posted it . . . or one like it . . . on Facebook when I first took it. But I thought I would post it here as a Friday Photo.

An Additional Responsibility You Might Not Have Been Aware Of

Posted by terrepruitt on June 12, 2017

I want to share something with you that I imagine not everyone thinks about. But when you attend a training — at least the ones that I have attended — it is part of the training. Many people will easily admit to knowing that an instructor or teacher of an exercise class is responsible for instructing the students on how to do an exercise correctly. In Nia we talk about the Body’s Way . . . the way in which the body was designed to move and also YOUR body’s way . . . the way in which YOUR (each individual) body moves. So we encourage people to move in their own way, but we also keep in mind the general safety guidelines. In keeping with the way the body was designed a lot of safety is built in. As an instructor in a class we instruct the students on how to move and exercise safely. Part of our jobs as instructors is to watch the participants to make sure they are doing things – moving – in a safe way. That is something that all of my trainings have included and something that most people are aware of. Another thing, the thing that some might not think about, is that we are responsible for the students’ safety in other ways. We are responsible for ensuring that other things and other people do not affecting the safety of our class. So in other words, when someone comes into the room where the class is being taught to grab equipment. The instructor is responsible for making certain that the person does not drop equipment on or in the path of a student. So we have to adjust our attention away from teaching and away from our own students to keep an eye on the person that has come into the room. We are responsible for what goes on in the class we are teaching.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitI feel that some people don’t think about that or perhaps they don’t understand it. Perhaps they have never taken a class where you are concentrating on what you are doing, so they don’t realize what a distraction it is when someone comes into the room. Also, they might not realize that the teacher is responsible for the students and their safety so the teacher gets distracted from their teaching when people come into the room to get equipment for another class. It happens often when an exercise room is also where the equipment is kept. I’ve even taught at places where there has been Audio-visual equipment kept in the room and it – apparently, needed to be retrieved during the middle of the class.

In many cases the instructors are instructed to not let people just take equipment out of the room, so not only are we responsible for the safety of the students, but for the safety of the equipment. Most venues don’t want people just walking in and removing equipment from the room. We, as instructors, are asked to keep that from happening. So not only is the teaching being interrupted, but the teacher is supposed to not let the person who has entered the room take equipment. It is completely disruptive. In addition to interfering with the class that is being taught, it puts the students safety at risk. The teacher has to turn her attention away from what the students are doing in order to give attention to the person that is removing equipment from the room. Even if it is a staff member it is completely disruptive. Despite the fact the person entering the room has authority to do so AND is allowed to move equipment, the instructor has to refocus away from the class onto the person that has entered the room.

One thing I am pretty certain about, the students in a class that is continually interrupted, they know. They know that the instructor has to stop teaching them to figure out what it going on. They know that the person entering the room is disrupting their focus and their class. It could all be chalked up to a lesson in living in the moment and focusing, but when it happens all the time they feel disrespected. They have paid to be in the class, they have taken time out of their schedule to be there, and then it gets interrupted. They know it is not right, because they too refocus, but for different reasons than the instructor.

If you’ve left a class and accidentally leave something behind and have to interrupt the next class to get your item, that is understandable. Ya run in, ya look apologetic, ya grab your item, and ya run out. That happens. We all forget things. It is when someone enters to remove equipment – even if it is quick, but especially if they have to move things and decide what they are taking – that the disruption occurs.

Sometimes it can’t be avoided that equipment is stored in the class.  Often times there are classes that use the equipment, but when the equipment is needed for a different class than is being held in the room, the equipment should be removed from the room beforehand.  The students deserve the respect of an uninterrupted class.  They also deserve to have the teacher watching to make sure they are moving safely for the entire class.

What do you think?  Have you ever had a class you were in be interrupted?

Day Twenty-Eight Of Your Daily Ten Minute Practice

Posted by terrepruitt on February 28, 2017

Last day.  I missed two more days.  I was gone this past weekend and I just forgot.  Out of my regular routine.  Trying to deal with dad stuff.  So much stuff to deal with, I just forgot.  Well, I got my Daily 10 Minute Practice in on Monday, and I plan to do it today.  But then again, I was planning on doing it Saturday and Sunday too . . . I hope you are doing well with it.  This IS the last day!  But perhaps you will be continuing . . . I’m gonna try.

I just have to get better at being “ok” with missing a day.  But not so ok that I just start skipping a lot of days.  There is a fine line, right?

Any plans to continue?
