Camp Toast

Posted by terrepruitt on November 25, 2019

I have not been camping in about 24 years. My last trip ended rather unpleasantly with my car dying over 30 miles away from my home. Thinking it would be a quick fix we left our dirty dishes in the back seat. It was not quick, but we didn’t leave the dishes in there for more than a day.  Well, enough of that unpleasantness. Let’s talk food! One thing I loved about camping when I was young was the food. We would eat things camping that we didn’t eat at home. When I think about all the trouble my mom went through to shop, lug all the food camping, cook it, and then the dishes we had to do . . . it was crazy. One thing my mom would make was what we called camp toast. We didn’t have electricity so no toaster, so we would have camp toast. Basically it is just fried bread. Sometimes it is not so much the recipe but the idea, right? Once you have the idea you know how to make it or can let your imagination take you from the basic starting point!

Even though I have a toaster sometimes I want camp toast. It is different than toasted bread with butter spread on it after, it is bread toasted in butter. I thought I would share this easy-peasy way to have “toast”.

Butter the bread on both sides, heat up a pan. Put the bread in the pan and cook one side until golden brown. Flip the bread over and cook the other side until golden brown. Serve however you want to eat your toast!

I know. So easy, but my husband had never heard of it so I am thinking there are others that have never heard of it.  I mean, why would you if you have always had a toaster?  Or just why would you cook bread this way?  Well, because it is DELICIOUS.  If you like bread and butter and you like it crispy this is a great way to experience it. It is a different way to have toast.

I prefer to use sliced sourdough, but your favorite bread that you like to toast would probably be the yummiest for you!

Have you ever had camp toast?  What do you call it?  If you haven’t had it before, does it sound like something you would like?

Like Hot Air Balloons

Posted by terrepruitt on November 22, 2019

I was going through some old pictures and found a few of these. This was the ceiling at The Dancing Cat. I think it is a great idea. A nice – inexpensive way to bring color and interest to a space. This was the second rendition of the paper lanterns. I think I liked the first one better, but this one was nice, too.

Colorful paper lantern ceiling decoration is today’s Friday Photo.

Latest Reads

Posted by terrepruitt on November 18, 2019

So have you started listening to books? Roughly a year ago I posted about how my husband and I used to listen to books on tape. They were on cassette tapes and we used to borrow them from the library. We would have a case full of tapes that held one book. I am not sure if Books On Tape ever went to CDs, but now there is Audible and I am sure there are other sources that have books you can download and listen to. As I mentioned in my post about the Pack Horse Library, my husband is the one that started on Audible and so he has a few books in his library. I am picking through some of them after his initial push of me listening to some series. Here are the latest books I have listened to lately.

It is a series about a group of people fighting against the people that have superpowers. The superpowers make people power hungry and basically not nice so the Reckoners fight against them. There were four books in that series.

The next book was the Audible original related to the Amazon Prime Video series Carnival Row.   It is the backstory about how Tourmaline and Vignette met. It is read by the actress that plays Tourmaline. She has such a lovely accent and way of speaking I was sad that it was only three hours long.Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin Yoga

Then I read The Giver of Stars which was a fictional tale about some of the Pack Horse Librarians.  It’s going to be turned into a movie.

Then came a horror story, Let Me In.  It had some really graphic and gruesome parts. It was engaging. Still not entirely sure what it was about . . . but, if you like horror stories I would recommend it.

After the bloody story, I wanted something light, something that would be rather quick. Let Me In was almost 17 hours long. My hubby had gotten a free book called You Can Thank Me Later. While it kinda isn’t a light story with a death taking front stage, it was sweet and entertaining. I really loved the way Kelly Harms, the author, described things and the silly way she started most chapters.

And really The Silent Patient, my next read wasn’t really a mystery either . . . . ahhh, maybe it was what they call a thriller? This was one that I had my husband purchase for me.

Then I moved on back to his library list and read Skyward, another book written by Brandon Sanderson the author of the Reckoners series. This was another space book — my husband loves space books. It has a character in it that – to me – makes me think of if two of the characters in the Black Ocean series were combined. It is like Wesley Wesley and Kubu were made into one character. So needless to say I love that character and wished there was more of him. I just saw on Mr. Sanderson’s website that there is a sequel to Skyward called Starsight. It will be available on 11.26.19.

But then I am sad because the short ones are over too fast. But my next listen was The Christmas Hirelings. It was short and sweet. It was a reminder of simpler times when simple little things could delight a child.

Now I am listening to The Impossible Fortress. I am almost done. I was talking to my husband about it yesterday telling him how the beginning really made me laugh and he couldn’t quite remember. He said this was the second book he had listened to. He made me laugh because my comment was about Vanna White and he said, “Oh, I forgot she was even in it.” That was hilarious because the whole book is based on Vanna White’s playboy spread. The whole entire story stems from that and he forgot. I guess that the story stemming from it isn’t really the story, so I will give him that.

Anyway, I thought I would share the latest books that I have listened to. Maybe one will interest you. Maybe you’ll be intrigued to try Audible. It’s nice to be able to listen to a book while stuck in traffic or while cleaning the house. It makes both more bearable.

Blue-Eyed Watercolor

Posted by terrepruitt on November 15, 2019

Here is another watercolor from the walls of the Willow Glen Community Center where I teach yoga.  I have a couple more that I would like to post.  I have not seen any new ones appear on the walls.  I keep an eye out though.  Isn’t this lovely?

Library Books Delivered By Horseback

Posted by terrepruitt on November 13, 2019

I have mentioned a few times that my husband and I listen to books via Audible. My husband has a long commute that gets longer each school year. What used to be 45 minutes is now pushing 90. He is the driving force regarding Audible. He is a sci-fi fan, he likes books about aliens and fighters, spaceships and black holes. I have shared a few of his picks before. And actually he does have a lot of different types of books in his library, but a big portion of it is the sci-fi and part of that is because we have gotten hooked on a few series. He has read three series by J.S. Morin. I have only read two. I think some of the books in his library were free or he thought they were such a good deal he didn’t want to pass them up. I had just finished one book – I think it might have been a free one – and it was a bit gruesome. So I wanted something light and quick. I didn’t want to start another series. He pointed me at one he got for free and it was really short and enjoyable. But I still wanted something else. So I looked at Audible’s “Discover” and I came across a book I decided I wanted to read. I texted him and he when he answered he said, “It’s in the library.”

So I started reading “The Giver of Stars”. I was interested in the story and also that it was going to be made into a movie. I figured it would be a movie I would want to see and I like to read the books before the movies so I thought I could get a jump on things.

I don’t think the main character’s story is actually true, but the job she takes on was real. And I am sure that some of the situations in the story happened. The story is about a short period of the lives of the some of the women of the Pack Horse Library. I was happy to learn of such a thing. Of course I want to know more.

During the Great Depression there was an initiative paid for by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) that set out to delivery books to people settled in the remote areas of the Appalachian Mountains, between 1934 and 1943. The Pack Horse Library was a group of women that would deliver books and other reading materials to people that might not have the means to make it down into a town to visit a library. Many of them couldn’t even read. They would have their children read to them or the librarians would sometime take time to read to them. Even though little over 30 percent of the population in eastern Kentucky couldn’t read in 1930 many of them understood that learning to read might help allow them to improve their economic status.

Many locals participated in the “libraries” themselves as anyone that had the means was encouraged to store the books for lending. In addition to storing books, many places needed to help by storing the supplies and things the Pack Horse Librarians would need. There would be a head librarian that worked at each place and she would give the books to the riders to take them to the various homes and schools. The head librarian would also make any repairs that may have been needed on the books themselves.

Some books would get in too bad of shape to lend out so the librarians would keep what they could save and create new books. They would use binders to hold stories and pictures that had been salvaged. They created recipe books and binders of quilt patterns.  These patched together books were very popular among the clients.

The Pack Horse Librarians would use their own horse or mule. Some were leased. It’s been documented that a woman would average walking or riding almost 5,000 miles a month. Each book pack could hold up to 100 books. The Pack Horse Librarians would ride out at least twice a month and cover 100 to 120 miles a week. Their salary was $28.00 a month. The books and reading material they delivered to the people on their assigned routes had been donated from multiple sources.

There were about 100,000 people that were the recipients of the work of the Pack Horse Librarians and by 1937 they were also bringing books to 155 public schools.

In 1943 the program stopped due to no more funds and the end of the WPA. For nine years there were woman who rode out in the cold, in the rain, in the snow, in the heat – whatever – just like mailmen, to deliver reading material to people wouldn’t have had access to it normally.

I thought that was pretty interesting. The story had a few of those details and a lot of information, but when reading a story I don’t always know what is true and what is fiction. I was very happy to learn that there really had been such a thing as the Pack House Librarians.  Oh, and the story, it was good too!

Did you know about the Pack Horse Librarians?

Gotta Keep An Eye On Those Peacocks

Posted by terrepruitt on November 11, 2019

Recently I was picnicking with friends and we had a visitor. He was VERY close and I was not entirely comfortable. My friends did not understand my discomfort, but I am thinking they were not entirely aware of how aggressive peacocks can be. He was giving me the stink eye and I just wanted to be prepared for the moment when he tried to grab my sandwich out of my hand. But he did not, although he did stand there pretty much the entire time we were eating.

We were talking to one of the staff who said that there is about 25 or 30 peacocks. She said that they had been brought over from Spain and they used to live and hang around the area, but they didn’t hang around as much anymore since the neighbor up the road started feeding them.

At least, I see them more than I used to. We used to have peacocks in our science area when I was in 7th and 8th grade. They used to scream – a lot.

While looking up some information on them, I did confirm that they can be aggressive and they are territorial. The internet also confirmed that they have been seen chasing people to get their food. So, that is why I kept my eye on this one while he eyed my sandwich.

The internet also said that peacocks do or have attacked people, but it is not a common thing. Most of the information mentioned “mating season” when reporting on incidences. Sounds as if they get aggressive during mating season, but that seems typical of most species.

It is interesting – to me – to learn that peacocks are the males while the female are peahens and they both are peafowl. The peacocks we saw did not have many tail feathers so we were not treated to any grand displays. Come to find out the males shed their tail feathers. They shed at the end of each mating season. One website stated it can be fast – happening in a week or it could take months. They do grow back in time for the next year’s mating season. That gives me hope that the feathers that are sold are actually molted feathers and are not plucked from the birds.

We had a pleasant picnic even though this guy totally wanted my sandwich.

Little Bouquet

Posted by terrepruitt on November 8, 2019

As you may have experienced from having flowers inside, some last longer than others.  I often rearrange bouquets into smaller vases as some flowers die off.  I ended up with this sweet little bouquet from a larger one I received for my birthday this year.

Purple carnations are this Friday’s Photo.

Movie Traditions

Posted by terrepruitt on November 6, 2019

Do you have any movies that you watch over the Holidays? Or movies that you watch for specific events? Last night my husband came home and he said, “Do you want me to wait or should I start the movie without you?” I had forgotten the date so I didn’t know what he was talking about, then he said, “It’s the 5th.” As he was saying it I realized what day it was and what we were going to watch. We had talked about it on Saturday. So we watch V For Vendetta on the 5th of November.

I am listen to a book and their family tradition is to watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Thanksgiving. I know, from posts on Facebook from my friends that some people watch Love Actually over the Christmas Holiday.

What about you? Do you have any movie traditions? Do you have movies you watch on specific days or specific events?

Chayote Part Three

Posted by terrepruitt on November 4, 2019

The internet says that chayote has a lot of benefits.  I am thinking a skin exfoliator may be one of them.  The condition my fingers were in after handling it was not good.  Took off a layer of skin.  Plus it left a sticky thick residue on my counter – AFTER I washed it off.  I had to use a scrubber to get it off.  I also washed my cutting board then stuck it in the dishwasher and it came out with that stuff still on it.  I had to scrape it off with a knife.  All of this really has me curious as to what it does INSIDE a body.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaAnyway . . . the information I found on the internet says that chayote has protein, fiber, calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, Copper, vitamin C, vitamin B9, and vitamin K.  Information also reports that it contains antioxidants. The antioxidants quercetin, myricetin, morin, and kaempferol.  Antioxidants may help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.  Chayote may also help with heart health by lowering high blood pressure and high cholesterol, and improving poor blood flow – all things associated with risk factors of heart disease.

The Healthline article continues on to state that chayote may help may help regulate blood sugar levels because of the fiber.  The fiber might also help promote a healthy weight.  The fiber and flavonoids might help with digestive tract health. Also going back to some of the nutrients:  the vitamin B9 might help with pregnancy and the vitamin C (antioxidant) might help fight aging.  Some research showed that compounds in chayote might reduce the risks of some types of cancer and slow the progression of others.  Test also suggested that the extract might help protect against fatty liver disease.

Additional information I saw is that is it also called a mirliton squash – there is that word again. I was introduced to it as it being a common food in Mexican cuisine, but the information I saw did mention it being used in Asian cooking. Again, I was just excited because it was new to me. I understand that it is not exciting to some people because they have been eating it all of their lives. And just like years ago when I received baby bok choy in my produce box I hadn’t really thought about how I probably HAD eaten it before in Chinese Food. Could be the same with chayote. I know there has been some things I couldn’t identify before in my chow mien so that could be it.

Not everything I get excited about and share is new to everyone, but sometimes it might be. I am just hear trying to let people know about new things (maybe new to them, maybe not) and share when I discover (or am given) something new.

Now that I know I need to wear gloves when prepping this fruit, I would cook it and eat it again . . . it has a lot going for it!

What do you think?
