When my husband got his new phone it came with AirPods . . . yeah, it was years ago. Anyway, he really liked them. He had gone through a couple of “wireless” earbuds. They usually ended up dying pretty quick because they were not really good with getting wet. Or whatever. I had bought some wireless earbuds and I like them, I bragged about them in Affordable Wireless Earbuds. I like them, but I am not good about charging things when I am not using them, then when I go to use it, it needs to be charged. I also wasn’t finding many occasions to use them. But, being the generous kinda guy he is my husband kept asking me if I wanted some AirPods. I kept saying no because I don’t really like the earbuds/pods and . . . I am not good at charging and I don’t use the wireless earbuds that I have very often. Then they came out with wireless charging AirPods. So my husband asked me if I wanted his AirPods and he would get the new ones (he really wanted the new ones). I kept saying no. Well, he did well NOT buying them until one day he “accidently” 😉 left his AirPods at my dad’s. He couldn’t go a month or two without his AirPods and actually he wasn’t even sure he left them up there. But when we went back up there he found them. So . . . guess what . . . I inherited his AirPods. I put them in my drawer. I forgot about them for a couple of months. Then one day I decided to try them instead of carrying around my Beats Pill.
It had been almost two months since my hubby had given me the AirPods. Not only had it been months since he gave them to me it had been at least a month before that when they had last been charged. But I thought I might as well try them, so I put them in — they worked! I was amazed that after all of these months they still worked. Wow. It had been at least 3 – maybe even four months and they were charged enough to work.
They are kinda cool. The charge lasts a long time. And when it gets low you can pop them into the case and it will charge up to about 80% in less than five minutes. That is very fast. Also while you are using them you can charge up the case so when you want to charge up the AirPods themselves you pop them in and bam! they have juice rather quick. If you want them at 100% you might have to wait a whole 10 minutes (or so). So, charging the AirPods is not as difficult as I thought. It is so quick which is really impressive to me.
It is also cool . . . to me that your phone tells you how much of a charge they have. It also indicates how much of a charge the case has. I find that helpful at times. I do find it odd that the AirPods are not always equal . . but whatever. With noticing the indication of amount of charge for the AirPods, I noticed that my phone does the same thing for my Beats Pill.
So I like that the charge lasts, that they charge quickly, and that the phone indicates the amount of charge, but I don’t like that they don’t have volume control. Not everything is recorded at the same volume and sometimes in the middle of what I am listening to, I want to adjust the volume. They do have four different actions you can choose to set each AirPod to perform. You can talk to Siri, Play/Pause, Next Track, or Previous Track. I have my left one set for Previous Track and my right one set for pause. With Audible you can choose between five different Jump Forward/Back times and the “Previous Track” on the AirPods corresponds to that setting – which is cool. The Beats Pill has volume and pause/play, but not forwarding or reversing capabilities. My husband always laughs as me because when he goes to talk to me I smack myself when I am wearing the AirPods . . . I am activating the pause.
I don’t use them to talk on the phone much . . . but I don’t talk on the phone much. When I am listening to a book and someone calls, I have used them. They work pretty well.
In addition to not having a volume control I don’t like that they stop playing when one is not in your ear. If you take one out of your ear they stop. If you can have them close together they will play, but that is annoying. It is not legal to drive with headphones/headset (both ears covered), so basically you can’t have two pods/buds in your ears. With the airbuds you could just use one and it worked fine but with the AirPods you can’t. Well, I just tucked one of them up on my ear with my glasses holding it and that works. But I find the whole – not working when they are far apart, kind of annoying. I have had one fall out and it stops the play. I would prefer that action to be an option. Maybe volume and an option to stop play when you are only using one could be a next upgrade. That would be cool.
Anyway, I am really impressed by the battery/charging situation. It actually allows me to use them because they charge so quickly.
At first when I would see the case I thought it was dental floss. And now that we have two cases that have the potential of lying around, I fancied mine up . . . hence the blue flowers around it.
So what about you? Do you use headsets? Do you use any wireless ones? Do you have AirPods? What do you think?

I am sure many of you are busy with Christmas stuff, whether is it shopping, cooking, or just enjoying yourself and your family and friends. I will make this brief. I love candles and I am pretty sure that those of you who love candles run into the same thing I experience – sadness when the candle you are burning stops burning. I mean, “Whaaaaah! There is so much yummy smelling wax left why can’t it just continue to burn?” Ok, some candles are excellent and they burn pretty much to the end . . . but even then, I often find myself wanting more. Well, there are two ways I eek out more yummy scent from my candles and I thought you might want to try them.
With some candles I put a tealight with a metal cup in the remaining wax. When the tealight burns the metal heats up a bit and melts the remaining wax causing is to release its fragrance. Recently one of the candles I have been enjoying this season stopped burning. The wicks are gone, there is no hope, but there is a huge chunk of wax still left in the tin. And I found some of these HUGE tealights – I am not even sure they are called tealights when they are this size – in my closet that I had purchased and had forgotten about. They are perfect for this tin of wax. It is allowing me to enjoy the fragrance from the candle even though it will not burn any more. This is the number one way I eek out scents.
The other day I was burning a three wick candle that we had inherited from a friend. It doesn’t have a scent. My current favorite candle stopped burning, but it still had a small layer of wax at the bottom of the jar and it still smelled GREAT. Well, I decided to shave the wax into the three wick. Ahhhhh, YES! Success! I was able to smell the scent by having it melt in the three wick candle. YAY! Now I can eek out some more of this lovely winter aroma until I can get to the store to get more.
Not only do I like to continue smelling the fragrance I have enjoyed from candles that stop burning, I feel like I am not wasting so much when I use these methods to get more out of the candle. With the shaving method I will be able to use all the wax, but with the other method I am not sure it will melt away.
If you are really crafty I am sure you can melt the wax from your favorite candles and give them new wicks. I haven’t gotten that determined yet.
So . . . am I the only one that wants to use up the last of that wax and keep smelling the candle scent or do you want to, too?
Remember to follow all instructions on candles and use common sense and be safe when burning candles!

If you have any red wine drinkers on your Christmas gift giving list and you don’t want to actually give them a bottle of wine – again, perhaps you can give them a pretty wine aerator. When you aerate a wine you are exposing it to air which allows it to evaporate and oxidate. Some of the compounds and smells evaporate leaving the more pleasant aromas. The oxidation can actually change the taste because certain things in the wine are reacting to oxygen. According to Wine Spectator you can simple aerate a wine by pouring it in a glass or swirling the wine in the glass. Or you can use wine aerator.
This type I first saw at Big Dog Winery. It is cool because you can aerate the wine by pouring it first into the carafe, and then pouring it back into the bottle. Some people love to serve the wine from the bottle. It helps with having to remember what wine it is you are serving because the bottle is right there. If you like you can serve it from the glass carafe itself.
I believe that aerating the wine helps soften it and I find myself enjoying red wine more.
It is a fun process too! Once you become confident that the carafe and bottle won’t tip over. I still like to hold them just to be safe.
Do you know anyone that drink red wine? Do you drink red wine? Do you aerate your wine?

As you may know I have been listening to books lately. The annoyance of having to be in the car for 50 minutes because of traffic when it actually only takes 20 to get there is lessened when there is a story that is captivating. I have an older car. I love my car. At first I was just using my phone to listen . . . as I said my car is older so it doesn’t have Bluetooth. And my phone works sometimes . . . I mean, it is sufficient sometimes, but some readers use low tones or whispers for some of the voices and they can get drowned out by road noise. And some roads are really noisy and drown out the reading even when they are speaking in their regular voice. So my phone didn’t work for some books. I started just having a speaker in my car, but either the aux cables were cutting out or the Bluetooth was. The place that we buy accessories from had a sale not too long ago so I decided to buy a transmitter.
Once having reached that decision I actually looked elsewhere online and found the one I was looking at cheaper elsewhere so I was happy. And while it is not great because of the light rail and other frequency interfering things around here, it is ok. Most of the time it is fine. It great when I am on the freeway. It is just mainly at stop lights and by my house – where the light rail is – where sometimes I have to turn it off because the interference is just too much.
But the best thing about it to me is “Paired!” I LOVE that. That is the best thing. I didn’t really forget my phone that often, but I often would get in my car and wonder, “Did I grab my phone?” And I did often think I put it in my purse but then when I reached to get it I cound’t find it. Sometimes I would even KNOW – for certain – that I put it in my purse and when I tried to get it I couldn’t find it so I would begin to doubt it. In fact the other day I put my phone in my purse and pulled out of the garage and stopped to shut the garage and couldn’t find my phone, but the device just finished saying “Paired!” and that is when I realized how fabulous that it. It confirmed my phone was in my purse. Greatest thing ever.
Because I use my phone for my Nia music it is important that I have it. I also use it for music when I teach yoga, but yoga does not rely on it. If it weren’t for my music it really wouldn’t be that big of a deal when I forgot my phone, but it is a bummer to get to class and not have it.
I assume the thing works with the actual phone, as in for phone calls, but I don’t have the need to talk on the phone while I am driving at this point. I just use it to listen to Audible and to make sure I have my phone.
Does your car have Bluetooth? Do you have a device for Bluetooth?

So it seems like not every time, but sometimes when it rains really hard or when it is really hot and dry we get ants. I am not a fan of ants and certainly not a fan of them in the house. Like I said we don’t get them all the time, but maybe every other year or so during a heavy rain. Sometimes they can be thwarted, if you see that first one you know they are scouting and the rest may be on their way. So sometimes, when you get that first one (or first few) you can stop the invasion. But sometimes you just walk into a room and it is like there is a surface moving. UGH! I am not a fan! With pets it is real pain to get rid of the ants because we want to be careful with what we use. A couple of years ago I came across Diatomaceous earth. I remember we were having a particularly difficult time with the ants so I was going to try something different. Well, I ordered it, but I didn’t get around to trying it. I was happy that I remembered I had purchased it so I could try it this time.
We had a recent ant invasion. They didn’t come for our food they came for the cats’ food. They came to one area and I moved the food to treat that area then they attacked at the second area. Well, I remembered the Diatomaceous earth. I wasn’t sure it really worked but . . .
I am not a bug killer (I have my husband do it 🙂 ), sometimes I will rescue a spider. So normally I don’t like to watch things die, but I wanted to see if the Diatomaceous earth would work and I wanted to see if it was true. Bugs with exoskeletons can be killed with it. Ants, bed bugs, fleas, roaches, and earwigs can be killed with Diatomaceous earth yet – FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous earth can be consumed by mammals.
I wanted to verify it killed ants before I sprinkled it in the two affected areas of our house. The next ant I saw was my victim. And, yeah, he just kind of jerked around then stopped moving. So did the second one. So, I sprinkled it in the two areas I thought the ants were coming in.
Diatomaceous earth is dirt rich in silica and is made up of fossilized remains of single-celled and siliceous organisms called diatoms. So in order for it to be safe for your pets it must be FOOD GRADE Diatomaceous earth. The FOOD GRADE kind contains less than 1% crystalline silica. The industrial or non-food grade Diatomaceous earth has levels of crystalline silica that can be harmful to pet and humans.
Now, having white powder around the house where little paws can get it is not really that great, but at least it is not poison.
And . . . so far so good, no ants.
Do you get ants ever? What do you do to get rid of them?
Not to detract from my quick, short post, but . . . . I actually asked my husband what title to give this. I was going between the one you see, wanting people to know it was about more than just ants and this one, which I think is catchy – The Ants Stop Marching One By One, Hurrah, Hurrah.
And he came up with a trendy one – The Mandiblorian – Bug Killer and, as a fan of Bob’s Burgers – Now You See Them, Now They’re Dead – catchy phrases on the vans.
Which one do you like?

I just read an interesting article that suggests that certain routine medical tests are somewhat unnecessary after a certain age. Now, I believe the article (and subsequent information I have seen on the internet) is stating just having the test just because it is routine is not necessary. If you are feeling unwell or have any type of symptom or if you have one of the diseases in your family history that they think can be hereditary . . . of course have a test, but the information is talking about the recommended regular testing that comes once you reach age 50. The idea is that after 75 there are fewer benefits to the tests than when you are under that age.
A Harvard study reported that a colonoscopy past the age of 75 may do little to protect you from cancer. Other studies show that the risk of complications increases with age. Seems like the industry might be more accepting of it being an individual’s choice as opposed to a blanket recommendation. Again, if your health or medical history dictates it, then stick with the recommendations for regular screenings.
The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) has no conclusion as to whether women over 74 should continue with the biennial mammograms, but a European study reported that the benefits of mammograms are limited. It further suggests that mammograms may lead to overtreatment and that the side effects are too risky for some women. Again, I believe they are talking about women without health risks and without a family history of breast cancer not needing the test every two years.
The PSA test is not recommended by any medical group past age 70. The USPSTF issued a statement in May of 2018 stating the benefits of the PSA test for prostate cancer did not outweigh the harm that may be caused in men over the age of 69. As I have been mentioning all along . . . if you are at risk or you feel you need this test make sure to get one.
If you have had three negative (for cervical cancer) Pap smears in the previous 10 years after age 65 a Pap smear is no longer something needed. Again, this is a personal and individualized issue . . . if you want to continue with this type of testing that is between you and your physician.
So you could be opting to opt out of these tests at a certain point. Seems like, unless they are necessary, there are other things we could be spending our time doing. Sounds good to me. Sometimes I think the regular testing and screening – without cause or evidence of it being necessary – can cause so much stress and worry it could actually result in disease.
What do you think?

So have you started listening to books? Roughly a year ago I posted about how my husband and I used to listen to books on tape. They were on cassette tapes and we used to borrow them from the library. We would have a case full of tapes that held one book. I am not sure if Books On Tape ever went to CDs, but now there is Audible and I am sure there are other sources that have books you can download and listen to. As I mentioned in my post about the Pack Horse Library, my husband is the one that started on Audible and so he has a few books in his library. I am picking through some of them after his initial push of me listening to some series. Here are the latest books I have listened to lately.
After the Black Ocean series and Robot Geneticists there was the series of Reckoner books. It is a series about a group of people fighting against the people that have superpowers. The superpowers make people power hungry and basically not nice so the Reckoners fight against them. There were four books in that series.
The next book was the Audible original related to the Amazon Prime Video series Carnival Row. It is the backstory about how Tourmaline and Vignette met. It is read by the actress that plays Tourmaline. She has such a lovely accent and way of speaking I was sad that it was only three hours long.
Then I read The Giver of Stars which was a fictional tale about some of the Pack Horse Librarians. It’s going to be turned into a movie.
Then came a horror story, Let Me In. It had some really graphic and gruesome parts. It was engaging. Still not entirely sure what it was about . . . but, if you like horror stories I would recommend it.
After the bloody story, I wanted something light, something that would be rather quick. Let Me In was almost 17 hours long. My hubby had gotten a free book called You Can Thank Me Later. While it kinda isn’t a light story with a death taking front stage, it was sweet and entertaining. I really loved the way Kelly Harms, the author, described things and the silly way she started most chapters.
Then I went to another mystery . . . .well Let Me In wasn’t really a mystery, but it kept me listening to find out what was going on, so I somewhat think of it as mysterious. And really The Silent Patient, my next read wasn’t really a mystery either . . . . ahhh, maybe it was what they call a thriller? This was one that I had my husband purchase for me.
Then I moved on back to his library list and read Skyward, another book written by Brandon Sanderson the author of the Reckoners series. This was another space book — my husband loves space books. It has a character in it that – to me – makes me think of if two of the characters in the Black Ocean series were combined. It is like Wesley Wesley and Kubu were made into one character. So needless to say I love that character and wished there was more of him. I just saw on Mr. Sanderson’s website that there is a sequel to Skyward called Starsight. It will be available on 11.26.19.
Sometimes after listening to a long book it is nice to listen to a short book. But then I am sad because the short ones are over too fast. But my next listen was The Christmas Hirelings. It was short and sweet. It was a reminder of simpler times when simple little things could delight a child.
Now I am listening to The Impossible Fortress. I am almost done. I was talking to my husband about it yesterday telling him how the beginning really made me laugh and he couldn’t quite remember. He said this was the second book he had listened to. He made me laugh because my comment was about Vanna White and he said, “Oh, I forgot she was even in it.” That was hilarious because the whole book is based on Vanna White’s playboy spread. The whole entire story stems from that and he forgot. I guess that the story stemming from it isn’t really the story, so I will give him that.
Anyway, I thought I would share the latest books that I have listened to. Maybe one will interest you. Maybe you’ll be intrigued to try Audible. It’s nice to be able to listen to a book while stuck in traffic or while cleaning the house. It makes both more bearable.
What books are you reading?

I have mentioned a few times that my husband and I listen to books via Audible. My husband has a long commute that gets longer each school year. What used to be 45 minutes is now pushing 90. He is the driving force regarding Audible. He is a sci-fi fan, he likes books about aliens and fighters, spaceships and black holes. I have shared a few of his picks before. And actually he does have a lot of different types of books in his library, but a big portion of it is the sci-fi and part of that is because we have gotten hooked on a few series. He has read three series by J.S. Morin. I have only read two. I think some of the books in his library were free or he thought they were such a good deal he didn’t want to pass them up. I had just finished one book – I think it might have been a free one – and it was a bit gruesome. So I wanted something light and quick. I didn’t want to start another series. He pointed me at one he got for free and it was really short and enjoyable. But I still wanted something else. So I looked at Audible’s “Discover” and I came across a book I decided I wanted to read. I texted him and he when he answered he said, “It’s in the library.”
So I started reading “The Giver of Stars”. I was interested in the story and also that it was going to be made into a movie. I figured it would be a movie I would want to see and I like to read the books before the movies so I thought I could get a jump on things.
Well, the story was fiction but it had some truth to it. I don’t think the main character’s story is actually true, but the job she takes on was real. And I am sure that some of the situations in the story happened. The story is about a short period of the lives of the some of the women of the Pack Horse Library. I was happy to learn of such a thing. Of course I want to know more.
During the Great Depression there was an initiative paid for by the Works Progress Administration (WPA) that set out to delivery books to people settled in the remote areas of the Appalachian Mountains, between 1934 and 1943. The Pack Horse Library was a group of women that would deliver books and other reading materials to people that might not have the means to make it down into a town to visit a library. Many of them couldn’t even read. They would have their children read to them or the librarians would sometime take time to read to them. Even though little over 30 percent of the population in eastern Kentucky couldn’t read in 1930 many of them understood that learning to read might help allow them to improve their economic status.
Many locals participated in the “libraries” themselves as anyone that had the means was encouraged to store the books for lending. In addition to storing books, many places needed to help by storing the supplies and things the Pack Horse Librarians would need. There would be a head librarian that worked at each place and she would give the books to the riders to take them to the various homes and schools. The head librarian would also make any repairs that may have been needed on the books themselves.
Some books would get in too bad of shape to lend out so the librarians would keep what they could save and create new books. They would use binders to hold stories and pictures that had been salvaged. They created recipe books and binders of quilt patterns. These patched together books were very popular among the clients.
The Pack Horse Librarians would use their own horse or mule. Some were leased. It’s been documented that a woman would average walking or riding almost 5,000 miles a month. Each book pack could hold up to 100 books. The Pack Horse Librarians would ride out at least twice a month and cover 100 to 120 miles a week. Their salary was $28.00 a month. The books and reading material they delivered to the people on their assigned routes had been donated from multiple sources.
There were about 100,000 people that were the recipients of the work of the Pack Horse Librarians and by 1937 they were also bringing books to 155 public schools.
In 1943 the program stopped due to no more funds and the end of the WPA. For nine years there were woman who rode out in the cold, in the rain, in the snow, in the heat – whatever – just like mailmen, to deliver reading material to people wouldn’t have had access to it normally.
I thought that was pretty interesting. The story had a few of those details and a lot of information, but when reading a story I don’t always know what is true and what is fiction. I was very happy to learn that there really had been such a thing as the Pack House Librarians. Oh, and the story, it was good too!
Did you know about the Pack Horse Librarians?

Recently I was picnicking with friends and we had a visitor. He was VERY close and I was not entirely comfortable. My friends did not understand my discomfort, but I am thinking they were not entirely aware of how aggressive peacocks can be. He was giving me the stink eye and I just wanted to be prepared for the moment when he tried to grab my sandwich out of my hand. But he did not, although he did stand there pretty much the entire time we were eating.
We were talking to one of the staff who said that there is about 25 or 30 peacocks. She said that they had been brought over from Spain and they used to live and hang around the area, but they didn’t hang around as much anymore since the neighbor up the road started feeding them.
Of course being around them made me curious about them because there seems to be that peacocks are just hanging around places more often than there used to be. At least, I see them more than I used to. We used to have peacocks in our science area when I was in 7th and 8th grade. They used to scream – a lot.
While looking up some information on them, I did confirm that they can be aggressive and they are territorial. The internet also confirmed that they have been seen chasing people to get their food. So, that is why I kept my eye on this one while he eyed my sandwich.
The internet also said that peacocks do or have attacked people, but it is not a common thing. Most of the information mentioned “mating season” when reporting on incidences. Sounds as if they get aggressive during mating season, but that seems typical of most species.
It is interesting – to me – to learn that peacocks are the males while the female are peahens and they both are peafowl. The peacocks we saw did not have many tail feathers so we were not treated to any grand displays. Come to find out the males shed their tail feathers. They shed at the end of each mating season. One website stated it can be fast – happening in a week or it could take months. They do grow back in time for the next year’s mating season. That gives me hope that the feathers that are sold are actually molted feathers and are not plucked from the birds.
We had a pleasant picnic even though this guy totally wanted my sandwich.

It is OBVIOUS he wanted my sandwich!
Have you been seeing peacocks around more often than you used to?

Do you have any movies that you watch over the Holidays? Or movies that you watch for specific events? Last night my husband came home and he said, “Do you want me to wait or should I start the movie without you?” I had forgotten the date so I didn’t know what he was talking about, then he said, “It’s the 5th.” As he was saying it I realized what day it was and what we were going to watch. We had talked about it on Saturday. So we watch V For Vendetta on the 5th of November.
I am listen to a book and their family tradition is to watch Planes, Trains and Automobiles on Thanksgiving. I know, from posts on Facebook from my friends that some people watch Love Actually over the Christmas Holiday.
What about you? Do you have any movie traditions? Do you have movies you watch on specific days or specific events?
