Its Annoying When People Don’t Use. . . .

Posted by terrepruitt on July 25, 2009

I am actually interested in hearing what you think, because I know what annoys me.  So let me know what you think.  Add comments to what I have or come up with your own.

It’s annoying when people don’t use:

Car blinkers

Car ashtrays

Car gas pedals

Door mats

Manners

Headsets (hands free devices) for cell phones while driving (yeah, in California it is illegal to hold your phone)

Headsets for office phones (we all do not need to hear your conversation even if it is a “business” conversation)

Office doors (see the above)

Crook of your arm when sneezing or coughing (it is better to cough/sneeze into the crook of your arm as opposed to your hand that touches things)

Bathroom sinks (they’re for washing your hands after you use the restroom before you go back to work. Oh yeah, I’ve seen it happen.)

Ok, I honestly just started out with two, but then I thought that looked kind of measly and I let my brain wander.  Let’s see how this one works out. What about you? What bugs you when they are not used properly?

Yeah, “do you know the way to San Jose?” that is what pops into my head, because my blog has strayed . . . . oh well, thanks for putting up with it!

Honey, I Shrunk the Doberman Pinscher

Posted by terrepruitt on July 23, 2009

I learn new stuff all the time.  Some of it is useful and some of it is not.  Some of it is fascinating and some of it is not.  Some of it is blog-worthy and some of it is not, but I might blog about it anyway.

I was in Santa Clara at a party and I recently met a Miniature Pinscher.  Did you know that Min Pins are NOT miniature Doberman Pinschers?  I had always thought they were miniature Doberman Pinschers, but they are not.   They are actually just a small breed of dog.   Miniature Pinschers have reportedly been around longer than the Doberman Pinchers.

“Pinscher” is a “type” of dog, like terrier is a type of dog.  This designation refers to the way the dogs behave.  There are Doberman Pinschers, German Pinschers, Austraian Pinschers, and another small terrier, the Affenpinscher.  According to all that I have seen the Pinshers  were developed to catch rats on farms, or fight or guard.

The word Pinscher does not translate from German into terrier, it is actually pincher or biter or some places say “cropped”.

But from what I am reading, the way I am understanding it, the breed is somewhat classified as a terrier due to its high energy level.  So even though it is small it is not considered a toy breed, which I guess can be mellow.  Min Pins (oh yeah they are sometimes called Min Pins) are quite hyper and need a lot of exercise.  Just walking doesn’t sound like that will do for these high energy dogs, they need a lot of play to get there energy worked out.

Also from what I can tell the different Dog clubs that decide what dog is what and what dog gets papers, some say this dog is from a Dachshund with an Italian Greyhound  and some say that the German Pinscher was added in with those other two to create the Miniature Pinscher.  So who knows.  All they seem to agree upon is that it is NOT a miniature Doberman Pinscher.  This fact is what made me look into this whole thing in the first place.  And there you have it.

Lyrics Gone Wrong

Posted by terrepruitt on July 16, 2009

Are you bold enough?  Are you secure enough?  Do you have it in you?  Can you admit to what you THOUGHT the lyrics were?

Well, here are a few I can share—whether they were from me or not, I won’t tell—hey, maybe I won’t tell.  Let’s make this post twofold.

1–share with me some lyrics you had wrong (or that a friend of yours had wrong or that someone you know of had wrong.)

2–guess what songs these are:

A–In the Garden of Eden

B–Our Love Is Japanese

C–Painted Glove (oh, c’mon, that one is way easy)

Its too hot here in San Jose, California. I know this will work out, right?   Care to play?

Yard Roses

Posted by terrepruitt on July 9, 2009

It is funny to me because when we first moved to San Jose, this rose bush had JUST orange roses.  Bright orange.  Now some come in pink.  The ones that do come in orange turn pink.

All of our rose bushes are multi-colored now.   Funny how it worked out that way.

I still think they are awesome.

I wish you would smell them.

We Interrupt Your Quest For Health

Posted by terrepruitt on July 7, 2009

This past weekend we went to a park in Fremont, not too far from San Jose.  I was thinking we would be in shade, but we were not so much.  I was terrible and got sunburned and worse, I “let” Hubby get sunburned too.

Now we all know the bad stuff about sunburns.  You got the whole risk of skin cancer increase going on.  This, of course is serious because the sun damages the skin’s cells and when they try to rebuild if something doesn’t work out right that is when cancer occurs.  Since most of us are immune to cancer  (Ya know, “That won’t happen to me.”), maybe we can use some other incentive.

What about the other things that happen that might interrupt our quest for health? In comparison to cancer these things are really nothing but inconveniences, but sometimes that is what it takes for us to take action.

I am talking about being uncomfortable.  I was looking outside and I wanted to go, but I knew it was too hot.  Even if I didn’t go out in the direct sun, I knew just the heat of the day would be too much.  So any normal activity you might do outside could be restricted.

What about sleep?  One of the best things we can do for our body and one of the things that is absolutely essential to health, but ya can’t do it well when you are sunburned.  The first night I think I woke up four or five times.

And exercise.  How uncomfortable is that?  Think about bending a sunburned limb into a yoga pose just gives me chills.  I wore a big shirt to teach the day after (the sunburn occurred) because I was thinking a shirt with tighter arms would be too much but every time I lifted my arms I was in pain because my shirt rubbed on my sunburned arms.

And shower just plain hurts.  Even if you opt for cold water sometimes just the water hitting the sunburn is enough to hurt!

So, I guess, I wrote this blog to myself, because I need to remember the inconveniences so that I remember the sunscreen not matter what.

The latest information is stating that products that block the UVA and UVB rays on the best.  Products containing titanium dioxide and Zinc oxide.  They don’t soak into the skin, they sit on top and scatter the rays.  Also, I am seeing that it doesn’t matter what number SPF you buy, you should apply it often.

So, think not only about avoiding the BIG thing, think short term, think in the now, think about wanting to remain healthy by continuing your normal outdoor activities, sleeping soundly, being able to exercise, and, oh yeah, for the sake of the rest of us—shower!  If you do get sunburned, what do you do to ease it?

More Twitter Reply Information

Posted by terrepruitt on June 27, 2009

Ok, so I had heard the way it works before, but it is somewhat confusing when you try to put it in to a practical situation and/or try to explain it (except the blog I found does a great job).  And so I “lost” track of how it was working.  And whenever I looked for an explanation I would get a search result that brought up information from 2008 and it was 2009 that the change was made.

I was further confused by a comment on my previous post that stated I had control over what replies I could see.  So I searched smarter.  I actually included the year in my search terms—duh!

So I found the some blogs that that helped explain things (click on the links below to go to each blog):

This first one is Twitter’s blog.

It explains that you only see @ replies (if it is the first “word” in the tweet) if you are following both the people in the conversation.  It also tells us what we want and don’t want.  It states that seeing a “one-sided” conversation is “undesirable”.

So this is said to cut down on the “confusion” and the “chatter” of Twitter.  But for some of us, what is really does is cut down on one of the things that was so great about Twitter and that was meeting new people with ease and following people that you might actually have an interest in following.  The way it used, to be you could see the conversation or part of it and then if you were really interested you could look at the profiles and possibly decide to follow that person.

This blog from Tech Crunch does a great job of explaining the way it is.

The opinion expressed is that of Twitter taking the choice from its users.  We used to have a choice as to what replies we saw, but now Twitter has decided what we want.

And DownloadSquad says that Twitter is going to change it eventually.*

So, as I originally suggested:  type words before you @ so that it can be seen by your followers no matter if they are following the other person or not.

I do this because most of the people I am following are business people.  And a lot of them are very kind and they share their expertise and kindness generously.  So I want to broadcast them.  I want to help them and their business, I want to share their kindness, and their expertise and make all of it viral.  Bugs me that twitter makes it difficult for me to do that.  Bugs me that Twitter decided that I think what is desirable.

As you can see by the links I have included in this blog, there are a lot of blogs out there that talk about Twitter.  I mainly was writing this blog to help a few of my new Nia friends who are just starting to realize that Twitter is a great way to get the word out about Nia.  So if we are using Twitter properly that helps us spread our love of Nia.

You are invited and encouraged to kindly comment.  Keep in mind that I am not claiming to be an “expert” I am just sharing some information that I believe to be true and sharing my opinions.  Thank you so much for taking the time to read it.

This link was not working last time I check. But I would imagine Twitter has changed a lot since 2009.

Hummingbirds In Our Yard

Posted by terrepruitt on June 25, 2009

I love to watch our hummingbirds.  I have always wanted to try to film them.  I know it is almost impossible given our equipment and our yard, but I thought I would try.  Yes, I know I posted hummingbird pictures on my last “whatever” Thursday, but remember, my blog, my rules—and a lot of people seemed to enjoy the hummingbirds–maybe it was the tongue.

I think this is getting to be their kind of weather.  I am going to warn you, you will probably see a lot of them on my blog—hopefully you’ll come back.  They are so entertaining.  And as I always say since we are in San Jose we have them for a long period of time.  It just works out that way with our wonderful weather.

So I was outside for about an hour and a half.  I shot about 100 videos.  Most of them were just a few seconds long because that is how fast the hummingbirds are.  A lot of them are clear, a lot of them are not.  Our camera auto focuses and it has a difficult time with moving feeders.

My goal was to post a short video of a hummingbird flying and maybe feeding.  Well, just as it was getting too dark to film—and the shots started getting grainy—I got this really long sequence of birds eating, flying, fighting, and just all around being the entertaining birds that they are.  So I apologize that it is over 5 minutes long.  Also, I apologize because I am talking throughout the video, but they actually smack each other.  And they do it audibly.  You might not be able to hear it on the video but I could hear it.  And they would do it right over my head!

At one point, around 3.28 you’ll hear “wrrrrr” that is a bird flying over me and the microphone.

More Of MY Twitter

Posted by terrepruitt on June 23, 2009

Again, I say:  I am going to share a few things that I have learned so that I can just point some of my new friends at this blog instead of typing it all out individually.  Now, here is the catch, this is my opinion and my perception of how it works.  If you have a different opinion or you know that it works differently please kindly share.  That would be very appreciated and helpful.

The @ is considered a reply.  Most programs I have seen have a reply button/option.  When you select it, it is like e-mail, it addresses your tweet to that person.  So if you are reading a tweet and you “reply” to it your tweet will go to that person.  Most programs will start the tweet like this:  “@person” then you type your message after.

@1

@1 (this is a tweet to @HelpYouWell)

Not too long ago twitter changed the way @ functions**.  I believe now if you leave the “@person” as the first word in the tweet (see @1) only the person you are replying to and that person’s followers will see it.  Your followers will be left out of the conversation.  If you type something before the @person (see @2) then your followers will see it too.  Since Twitter is a social network where people are freely sharing information it makes sense to me to take that extra second and type something in front of the @ so “everyone” can see it.  Also it helps demonstrate that you are replying to people.  If you reply but your followers don’t see it they might think that you are not engaging with others.

@2

@2

**Exactly how Twitter changed it, I am not sure.  I just know that it does not function as it used to, so you want to type something before that @ so it can be seen by more people.

You can also just use the @ to send a message to someone, it does not necessarily have to be a reply to a message.  It is just called “reply” sometimes.  I call them at-messages.

RT or retweet is something you do when you like what you have read and want to share it with your followers.  Again, most programs that I have seen have a retweet options so it will take the tweet and copy it into the tweet box with a “RT @person” in front of it.  So, it is doing several things:

1:  by putting RT it is indicating that the tweet is a “retweet”
2:  it is “addressing” the tweet to the person that sent it (with the @person) allowing them to see that you liked their information enough to share it AND at the same time giving them “credit” for having tweeted
3:  it is allowing you to share the information with your followers.

Often when I RT I type in something front to give an idea as to why I am retweeting.  (I didn’t in the example above, but, I often do.)

The DM is a direct message so when you “DM” someone it goes only to them.  BUT you might still want to think of it as a publicly viewed tweet so you remember to watch you Ps and Qs.  In order for you to DM someone, they have to be following you.  If you are following them, but they are not following you, it won’t go through.  TweetDeck will tell you that they are not following you.

I might do another post about TweetDeck.  I don’t know too much about it, but I use it.

Please share your thoughts with me.

My Twitter

Posted by terrepruitt on June 20, 2009

I am not a Twitter expert. But . . . I have picked up a few things from a lot of people who could be considered experts. Plus I have picked up some things from just doing it.

Recently I have connected with a bunch of wonderful people who have less time than I do to spend learning about this.  So, I am going to share a few things that I have learned so that I can just point them at this blog instead of typing it all out individually (on my iPhone, mind you).   Now, here is the catch, this is my opinion and my perception of how it works.  If you have a different opinion or you know that it works differently please kindly share. That would be very appreciated and helpful.

For my friends, here is my advice:

-Put a picture up.    Anything, doesn’t have to be you if you don’t want, but don’t leave that twitter box up.  That is not good.  I actually have to be really convinced to follow people that have that (or I have to know them personally and understand that they just haven’t gotten around to putting a picture up).

-Fill out your bio.    Put something there.  If you are Nia person, tell them about Nia, if you can’t think of anything else.  If you have to, read OTHER people’s bios to get ideas.  I have followed people just because their bio has made me laugh.  Make up something funny.  List your likes or dislikes, list what you will be tweeting about, share that you like to work out, share that you loathe exercise . . . .who cares what you write, just put something there.

-Put your web address up.    C’mon, you have a website because you want people to go to it.  Put it out there.  MAKE SURE YOUR LINK WORKS! (Ya, that is a big deal.)

-Tweet.    Oh my, this is the most difficult thing, but the most important.  I am still challenged by it.  But do it.  If you are like me it is kind of intimidating.  If you are following some major people (like I am, and I mean “major” as in they are “celebs” on Twitter) their useful information can make me wonder, “What do I have to add?”  So I started by retweeting other people’s stuff.  Then people would retweet my tweets and start talking to me.  And then I would think of something to share and bam . . . . so it goes.  I still retweet a lot because there is a lot of good stuff out there that I like to share, but I also share my own stuff.  I also like to tweet about stuff happening in the area of San Jose (Willow Glen) in which I teach classes.

The following is easier said than done: don’t worry so much (I still do, sometimes, but I try not to).  The people that you want following you are the ones that want to see what you have to say. Right?  So say what you want and you will get people following you.  People will come and people will go.  That’s ok.

Ok, I will continue this on Tuesday because right now, my word counter is saying that I am way over my self-imposed word limit.  Tuesday I will tell you what I understand about @, RT, and DM.  And of course, if you don’t want to wait, I am sure you can find all of this information out there somewhere else.

Hummingbird Tongues

Posted by terrepruitt on June 18, 2009

So my friend who writes Zebra Sounds included the fact that hummingbirds have tongues in a post recently.  I learned this after having watched them at our feeders (about 10 years ago).  I had always thought that they used their beak as a straw, so imagine my surprise when I caught a tongue in a picture.

I was looking through my pictures for the tongue picture for her post — but we didn’t communicate well enough for her to actually use it, but in trying to find it for her, it got me looking at more of my hummingbird pictures.

Since I am not a professional photographer, I just have to sit there and take picture after picture and hope I end up with a good one.  Sometimes I do.

I will try to learn more about hummingbirds and I will continue to take pictures and probably post more of some I have already taken.  I have a lot.  They fascincate me.  And just like our other birds, since we live in San Jose and our weather is warmer for a longer season, we have birds around for six to seven months.

For now:

Their hearts beat about 21 times per second, their wings 55 – 75 times per second.  They weight 1/10 of an ounce.  They can feed on up to 1000 flowers a day.  The hummingbird tongue licks up nectar at the rate of 13 licks per second.   And they do eat insects.

Somewhat unrelated, to these pictures, I just wanted to mention, yesterday I was outside taking pictures and working out and one flew right up to me, within arm’s reach and just hovered where I was kneeling.  I think they are a very curious bird.  Maybe they are almost as curious about us as we are about them?

I want to remind my awesome readers that my pictures are all mine.  I take them all myself and it is not cool at all to steal them.
