The City Of San Jose Has Two Different Exercise Programs

I am going to address this again because so many people are not aware of the programs in San Jose that are available through the Parks and Recreation Department. Back in 2015 I wrote a post explaining the main difference of two of their programs. To summarize, there is the program that many of you are familiar with because many of us grew up with it, that is the program the city calls the Leisure Class Program. These are classes in the booklets the Parks and Recs Department prints and sends out. There are ALL types of classes – don’t let the name “Leisure” fool you. There are language classes, art and craft classes, music lessons, cooking lessons, dance classes, exercise classes . . . .and a lot more. They are set up in sessions where you register and pay for the entire session before the first class. The session consists of a set number of meetings and when you register you pay for all of them. You may be familiar with those types of classes . . you may have even signed up for one of those sessions and had it cancelled because not enough people signed up. That is always disappointing . . . that is why it is important to sign up early. Anyway . . . there is also another program called SJCITY Fit . . . it is a version of Group Ex which was discontinued in 2015. But it is somewhat the same in that it is like a gym membership. You pay monthly and you have access to all the classes that are in the SJCITY Fit program, PLUS the gyms at three locations.  The SJCITY Fit Program classes are exercise classes.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThere are a lot of people who are not aware of this program that the city offers. I talk to people all the time that think the exercise classes through the city of San Jose are just the leisure type of class. I teach both. I teach some SJCITY Fit classes and I teach some Leisure Classes. There are benefits to both, so it really depends on what works for you. But it is nice to know that you have options.

There are some people who like to go to a class everyday. For the people who just want to have a class to go to every day, the SJCITY Fit program is great. The SJCITY Fit classes are offered at three of the community centers in San Jose; Camden, Almaden, and Bascom. Some people like the convince of going to the community center that is closest to their house, so they might join the Leisure Classes. There are a lot more community centers that offer the Leisure Classes. It all depends on what works for you.

The SJCITY Fit classes are on-going . . . meaning there is no end. Yeah, sometimes there might be a cancelled class if the teacher has an emergency and can’t get a sub in time, but the class is scheduled to just go on and on.

I have all of my classes on my website, but since I teach for BOTH programs it might be confusing sometimes. I think it is important for you to know the difference so you can decide what class you want to take.

At the time of this post, under the Leisure Program, I teach two yoga classes. One class is at the Cypress Community Center and the other one is at the Willow Glen Community Center. You register for the session. Although Cypress is unique and will allow you to drop in. But typically, with Leisure classes, you need to register for the entire session.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitAt the time of this post I teach THREE NIA classes under the SJCITY Fit program and one stretch class under the SJCITY Fit program. So for one monthly fee you can take all four classes a week. PLUS attend all the other classes that are offered through the SJCITY Fit program PLUS go to the gyms. If you don’t want to join the monthly membership you can drop in for $6.00 per class.

Usually . . . although I can’t say for sure . . . but usually . . the city has a special at the end of the year. They offer an annual membership for a great deal and you just buy that and you are set for the year. But they do not offer the annual membership all year. It is usually for a limited time. After that time is up any membership purchased is only monthly. We will see what they do at the end of this year. I will keep you updated.

I just wanted to share – trying to get the word out there – and try to clarify that there are two ways you can exercise with the Parks and Recreation Department of the City of San Jose: SJCITY Fit and Leisure Classes.  These are GREAT programs – hopefully you will take part in what the city has to offer!

Twitter Can Give You the Warm Fuzzies

I often find myself defending Twitter when I meet new people.  In this world of multiple social media networks, the subject of FaceBook, Twitter, and Yelp often come up.  We start talking then usually someone says, “I’ve never gotten into Twitter.  I mean, really (!?!?) who wants to know what I had for lunch?  And I certainly don’t care about what others had for lunch?!?!”  That is not the only thing Twitter is about.

First of all, that is a Twitter stereo-type.  Not ALL tweeple tweet about what they had for lunch.  But those that do often get a lot of responses.  If you are in a circle of people that are foodies they LOVE tweets about food!  ANY MEAL AT ALL.  My hubby (@JohnPruitt) used to tweet and Facebook pictures of his lunch every day.  Now he actually takes lunch from home and people miss his pictures.  They ask him if he is on a diet, if he is sick, they miss it.  EVERYONE eats.  Not everyone has the opportunity to eat what is available to us in San Jose and the Bay Area and they enjoy seeing all the different things.  Food really brings people together.

What I was thinking about the other day was when someone tweets me out of the blue and says, “I thought about you . . . .”  WOW!  People I know only through Twitter THINK about ME!  How cool is that?  I love that someone out there is thinking about me.  I love it when it is silly, “I was thinking about you because I was wearing blue.”  I love it when it is related to healthy eating, “I was thinking about you as I ate my salad.”  I love when it is about kitties, “I saw a cat and thought about you and your cat.”  I love when it is about Nia, “I went to a Nia class today and I thought about you.”

Yes, I started using Twitter to promote Nia and my business.  I have made business connections and friends.  I have actually made some connections.  Funny enough, with this post half written (up to this very point – no lie!) I had a DM* conversation with a friend today.  She was asking if I thought it were possible to have “real” friends on Twitter.  Ones that you only knew through Twitter.  My thinking on that is “you betcha!”

Maybe the definition of “real” is different, I don’t know.  But I know that I know more about a lot of my friends on Twitter than I know about my friends I have in person.  I talk more to some of my Twitter friends than I do my “in person friends”.  So . . . . . to me, as I always say . . . Twitter is what you make it.  Connections are out there to be made.  Either you know because you are on it, or you will see when you get there.  It is soooooo AWESOME (inspiring, and humbling) to have someone tweet, “I was thinking about you today!”  Gives me the warm fuzzies.

No Virginia, There Aren’t Really Nectarines

Is San Jose a good place to grow nectarines?  I love nectarines.  I just decided I want a nectarine tree.  My hubby knows I love nectarines so he came home with a container of them.  YES!  For three days I would walk into the kitchen and touch every one to see if they were ripe yet.  Let me rephrase that: for three days EVERY TIME I walked into the kitchen I would touch every one to see if one was ripe.  I stood there at one point wanting to eat one, but knowing that if it wasn’t ready it would ruin the joy of it.  So I waited.

Now, they are ripe.  Yesterday I ate two because if you don’t eat them fast they will go bad.  These ones are the eat-it-over-the-sink-because-it-is-really-juicy type of fruit.  Confession:  I stopped at this point in my writing because thinking about them made me want one.  LOVE THEM.  So good.

I was going to post about the nutrition value of nectarines, but I learned something new as I researched how to grow nectarines.  I thought I would share.

I had always thought of peaches and nectarines as being similar but not the same fruit, but the information I am seeing is that a nectarine IS a peach, but with smooth, non-fuzzy skin.  But I don’t think they taste the same.  Do you?  But alas, according to what I am reading, there aren’t really nectarine trees, they are only peach trees that produce a mutated variety of peach.  Dang, I learn a lot writing a blog.  Did YOU know that, Dear Reader?  Did you know that a nectarine is a peach? That explains why people always have peach trees and not nectarine trees.  But that actually makes me laugh because if it is a peach tree with a mutation, it is a nectarine tree.  Odd.  It must be the way “they” classify things.  Everything I look up for nectarine comes up peach.

A nectarine is in the group of peaches, but it is two peach trees with the recessive “fuzzy” gene that produce a nectarine tree.

I am sure there are plenty of you who knew that a nectarine was a peach.  Quite honestly,  I don’t need to know, but I am kind of surprised by it.  I thought a peach was a peach and a nectarine was a nectarine, and it is, but it isn’t.  And no, I am not going to compare this to anything and get all philosophical on you because, well, I am just stuck on the nectarine being a peach.  I just find it fascinating.  I love when I am looking for something and I discover something entirely new to me.

Frozen Vs. Fresh

Frozen vegetables can be just as nutritious, if not MORE nutritious, than the vegetables you buy in the produce section.  Yup. You read that the right.  It says that you might be getting more nutrients from frozen vegetables than “fresh” vegetables. IF you are able to buy your vegetables from a local farmers market, that is where you most likely will get the most nutrient rich vegetables.  But be aware.  In our area–in and around San Jose–we have farmers markets pretty much every day of the week during the summer and it depends on WHEN the farmer has come to the bay area and when they picked their veggies.

I know that we attended one local market (and we have not been back) that was on a Sunday.  And the farmers claimed to have been in the area since Friday, and we saw them at a market on Saturday, and to tell you honestly it showed.  They vegetables had to be picked before Friday for them to have come up to the Friday market (and they could have even come to the Thursday or Wednesday Farmers Market).  It was the warm season and without refrigeration, the produce was very tired and wilted by Sunday.  As I said, my hubby and I have not actually been back to that particular market because the produce was so unappealing.  The idea of a farmers market is that you are getting FRESH produce, but when some farmers attend all the markets in the area they might not be that fresh.  The items probably were picked at the proper time, but within days they start to lose nutrients and without refrigeration they start to rapidly decay.

With produce from the grocery stores it is often harvested before it even reaches its full nutrient potential, and then once it is picked it might ripen some more but it will not have the full nutrients as it would have had it been picked after it reached its peak.  By the time produce travels to the stores and is ready for purchase it has lost a lot of its nutrient value.

The popular length of time I am seeing articles state is two weeks.  Vegetables can be picked up to two weeks before it reaches the store.  Then . . . it MIGHT not get put out for purchase right away (lets be generous and say it only sits for a day), then often times we buy it and it sits in the fridge for (lets be generous and say it sits for only two days).  That is a long time in which the vegetable is losing nutrients.  It might still LOOK pretty, but it is not a pack full of goodness as we might hope.

With vegetables that get frozen they are pick at the proper ripeness and blanched, frozen, and/or flash frozen right away so their vitamins and minerals as sealed in.  The breakdown of enzymes is halted in the process.  Supposedly in 1998 the Federal Drug Administration found that frozen vegetables have basically the same nutrient as fresh.  I cannot find anything on a government page confirming that but I can find it on a slew of other pages.

So it is quite possible that the veggies in the grocery stores frozen section have more nutrients than the produce section. Read the labels to check if anything has been added like sugar and/or salt because those are not things you would find in “fresh” veggies so you probably want to avoid them in the frozen ones too.

My plan consists of having fresh veggies, however fresh they are from the store or the local market, within the first two maybe three days of having purchased them.  I have frozen veggies in the freezer for when a trip to the store isn’t fitting into the schedule.  But it used to be that those frozen veggies would sit and get freezer burned because I thought they weren’t good enough.  But now I believe they are good, if not better, so I make sure to employ a rotation exercise, and we eat them in a reasonable amount of time.  Ya know when the schedule is tight and getting fresh ones isn’t quiet happening.  Then on the next trip to the store we get “fresh” and frozen vegetables to back into the fridge for when the schedule is tight again.  I would always rather have some sort of veggie than none at all.  And yes, that even means a canned vegetables.

Nia White Belt Principle #5 – Awareness – Dancing Through Life

I have been avoiding this principle because it can be very complex. To me, all of Nia’s White Belt Principles can be complex because they can be applied strictly to the cardio workout that is one aspect of Nia, they can be applied to Nia as a practice—which translates into, they can be applied to life, or they can just be applied to life.

Debbie Rosas Stewart talked about Principle #5 in this month’s Nia Teleconference for EveryBODY. She kept it simple. In all the calls she talks for about 15 minutes then she takes questions for the last 15. The call is 30 minutes. I will share with you what she said, but I recommend you listen to the call when they have it up on the site. They record each call every month.

Since I like to keep my posts relatively short, I have realized that I can post short summaries of Nia information and re-visit the information in additional posts.

One of the first things she said is very true, and I would like you to think about it. She pointed out that we are often aware of pain whereas we are not aware of pleasure. If we have a sore body part, we are aware of it. It makes its presence known and we listen. I personally don’t think we always listen to what it needs, but that is topic of another post. But we certainly don’t always pay attention to pleasure.

With Nia we seek pleasure. We seek to move away from the pain and go towards the pleasure.

There are a few things we can do to assist with that. One way is to be aware. Be aware of what brings us pleasure. As we move throughout our day we can make our movements a dance. While we are “doing”, we can dance through life. As you are reading this and you shift in your chair, notice the movement of your hips, notice to tilt of your head, do it like a dance.

While you are not moving, while you are “not doing”. Notice the stillness in your body. Allow the stillness to bring calm, relaxation, a sort of meditation, if you will. Notice what it is you are touching. Not just touching with your hands, but with your entire body. Are you sitting on a chair? Are you leaning on a desk? Benefit from that touch and that “not doing”.

Life as art so notice the art around you. Notice the noises and allow them to filter in as sound. Breath in the sensation of life. Not talking about “art” that would be in a museum art, but just the beauty of the world. Whatever you find beautiful.

There is so much about Nia I always find myself saying, “Another thing . . . one thing . . . Nia this . . . and Nia that. . .” but really. Another thing about Nia is that it is kind. Nia believes that we receive what we need to receive. We are not expected to hear something and walk away knowing it all or knowing it perfectly. With that in mind, understand that this is what I heard. These are the notes I took. Please, I invite you to listen for yourself and glean from it what you need. Focus on what resonates with you.  Take away something you can share.

A Rose Is A Rose

I have learned a lot from our backyard here in San Jose. One thing I have learned is even rose bushes change.

I am posting pictures of our roses because they have changed over the years. When we first moved in there were ORANGE. I had never seen roses so orange. My husband wanted to rip out all the rose bushes and rearrange the yard and I requested that he keep the orange rose bush. I didn’t care about anything else in the yard but that one bush. I was fascinated by the orange roses. And so were many people that saw them. When we first moved in we had a ton of roses, all the time, or it seemed like all the time. We would have flowers in the house all the time. I would also take them to work. People would stop and ask me about the orange roses. That is how vibrant their color was.

While I am not sure about how my hubby felt about the orange roses, I know how he felt about the rose bush. He HATED it. It was one of those bushes that had thorns everywhere. At the top of the stem near the flower there would be hundreds of little tiny thorns. When they got in your fingers, they felt like fiber glass. The thorns were progressively larger as they went down the stem. There was never any room on the stem to put your fingers. So working with these roses always resulted in bloody fingers. The thorns at the bottom where huge, sometimes as big as a half of an inch.

Also the blooms had “less petals”. I think of the “less petal” roses as “real” roses.

Early this week, while I was practicing Nia, I looked out the window and saw a huge rose on the bush. I decided I wanted to have it inside. So I went out to cut it. Even though the rose was next to a bud, I decided to cut them both so the stem would be long enough to put in a tall vase. I also cut another rose. I was holding them while I was looking for a vase to put them in, it occurred to me that there was one (ONE!!!) thorn on the big rose’s stem. And the other one hardly had any. Then I looked at the rose itself and noticed it too is different.  I had previously posted about the color change of our roses, but I had not noticed the lack of thorns nor the increase in the amount of petals before.

They are still very beautiful and I love having roses in the yard and in the house. But, there are not the same roses that we had when we moved in. So I learned that roses morph. The rose bush that has been in our yard since we moved in eleven years ago has changed. Interesting. I guess most things change huh? I had noticed that the flowers were not longer the striking orange color they had used to be, but I just noticed the flower itself is different and there are less thorns. They have been changing over the years. Do you know why? Is it cross pollination? Do all roses do that?

Review Blog Year – Top Ten

So here it is the end of the year.  I have been blogging since March (2009).  I have posted 130 times.  This is 131.  I thought I would end the year with a review of some of my favorites and according to the numbers some of your favorites too.  Here they are, not in any order:

Lyrics Gone Wrong . . . I had entertained the idea of doing this once a month, but after the second month I ran out of songs to play with.

Interesting Picture – Marilyn Monroe Albert Einstein . . . I LOVE optical illusions and this one is a doosey.

Hummingbird Tongues . . . they still fascinate me and I am still surprising people with the fact that the birds have tongues and use them more than the beak is a straw.  And usually they tongues dart in and out so fast it is a rare treat to catch it out for a picture.  Yay!

A Poem Says A Lot . . . Fabulous!  We Have Come To Be Danced . . .

Nia Belt System . . . Before you can move onto the next belt they say a year must pass.   You do not have to get involved.  It is a great workout without being involved with the belts.  The belt system only comes into play if you care to get that involved in Nia.  Nia’s belts mimic some Martial Arts; white, green, blue, brown, black.    I am learning so much with my White Belt, I can see myself waiting at least another year before I move onto the next belt.  There is so much to learn and enjoy in each belt, I am not in a hurry.

Say: “I Am Wonderful” . . . I like to say this, I like to hear this song.  I like to remind people to go to iTunes each week to download the free song.

A Brief Look At Nia . . . still excited to share Nia with people.  It is a great body-mind practice and a workout that can make you sweat yet not really feel like exercise.  It is learning to follow the body’s way.

Wrapping Tips . . . WHAT?  I was shocked that everyone did not read my blog.  On Christmas Day and the day after the bags and bags and bags and bags of wrapping trash that I saw on the curbs just blew my mind. In this day and in these times, I was just utterly flabbergasted that people don’t re-use the wrappings.  It amazed and saddened me.

My Favorite Mugs . . . so I found out that not everyone got my little joke.  Ya know, back in the day (what day, I don’t know), they used to call faces mugs . . . get it now?

The Seven Cycles Of A Nia Workout . . . The workout has cycles, somewhat like Jazzercise.  I like to share this aspect of Nia so people have an idea of what a workout class will be like.  We set a focus and an intent, step in, warm up and move all the way through the cycles to the floor, and then we step out.

Awesome Salad

Years ago my friend made a salad and brought it to a potluck.  This had to be over 10 years ago.  Since then I have seen many versions of this salad, and I myself had made many different versions.  But for Christmas I am always asked by my husband’s family to bring this salad.

-A bag or two of Spring Mix

-A pear or two (chopped into pieces)

-Walnuts (chopped)

-Blue Cheese

-Balsamic Vinaigrette

Mix all the ingredients together.  Using as many nuts and as much blue cheese as you would like to make a good balance. 

You might be able to tell in the photo of my salad, I did not use spring mix.  I used a bag of heart of romaine and some baby spinach.  I didn’t use walnuts, I used pecans.  I also didn’t take the picture with the dressing on because I didn’t want to toss it until we were ready to eat it even though we were going somewhere not far from San Jose. 

It is a great salad.  I sometimes use apples instead of pears.  Whatever you have on hand is good to use.  I like to use walnuts or pecans, I have tried another nut, but I am sure it would work out.

Ab Jam

With the Turbo Jam DVD set you get five workouts.  Learn and Burn, 20 Minute, Turbo Sculpt, Cardio Party, and Ab Jam.

With the Ab Jam you get the jacket saying the workout is 20 minutes.  Timer starts it out at 18:53.

Chalene Johnson says it is 10 minutes standing and 10 minutes on the ground.  First there is a tiny warm up then the exercise consist of ab movements.  Basically you are bending from side to side and bending forward.  But if you are just doing the motion and not actually putting the effort of contracting your abs then it is just movement and you won’t get any contraction type of benefit.  As Chalene says it is not “leaning to the side, it is crunching”.  So you have to bend but make sure you are getting in the isometric contraction.

The movement includes some of the moves that Chalene calls her “Elite Eleven”.  The Turbo Tuck and the row are examples.  She also gets some squats and balance exercises in there.

I originally purchased this set of DVDs because it claimed to have standing ab work and it does!

With 9:20 left you’re on the floor.  She moves the first exercise from standing to the floor, so you are doing the tuck, then traditional crunches.  Here you can clearly see the different intensity levels.

The music has changed from dance music to a more middle-eastern flair.  Even though the style has changed Chalene manages to get some grooving in there.  I am convinced she loves to dance.

Some on the advanced ab work is done with your feet off the floor.  Legs straight in the air or legs in “tabletop” (bent at the knee) as they call it in Pilates.

At the 4:00 minutes mark the routine changes and she has the punches included with the crunch.

When the routine has the ol’ hands-behind-your-head-elbows-out-to-the side cross over crunches she reminds you that you are actually leading with your shoulder and NOT your elbow because that is how you really work the abs.

With a little over a minute and a half left you are sitting up and working your abs with your feet off the ground and your knees going to one side then the other.

At about 20 seconds left you do down dog and child pose.

That is the Ab Jam routine in the five workout series of Turbo Jam.

So here in San Jose, where we normally have nice mild weather it has been cold and doing a workout DVD might be an alternative to going out and doing the regular walk, jog, or run.  This DVD was not a cardio workout, but, it still gets your blood pumping and has a variety of ab exercises in it.

Asparagus Not Roasted

Yup, AGAIN with the asparagus, but this time it is NOT roasted.  You see, my hubby gets just as tired of me cooking roasted asparagus just as you probably get tired of me blogging about it.  Well, we recently went to Coscto (is that a Bay Area thing?  There are a few just in San Jose.) and bought a few bags of asparagus.  I could eat just roast it and eat it that way, but I like to make food that my hubby will enjoy too, so I decided to try cooking it another way.

Trying to come up with something new is a little exercise in creativity. It is funny how it works out when I am just throwing stuff together and when I am just trying something out to be different it turns out that my husband LOVES it.  I never know how it is going to work out.

I put some garlic infused olive oil in a pan with some onions then cooked the ground turkey.  I decided to be totally daring and so I used some balsamic vinegar (hubby is not a fan, but Ithought I would try it).  Then I added the asparagus and I also used some smoky garlic sea salt a friend of ours brought us from Hawaii.

I cooked it all up and served it over rice.  Now, I have to honest, I really liked it, but my hubby LOVED it and it COULD be because I plated his rice, then I took two slices of Havarti and put it over the rice, THEN I put the turkey asparagus combination over that.  So the cheese melted in between thehot rice and the hot turkey.  I had a taste, his tasted pretty much like cheese.  And anything is better with Havarti because it is like butter.  I didn’t have the cheese and I felt it was great and not overpowered by cheese.

I used a package of turkey (I guess it is a pound or a little over) and probably a one and a half pounds of asparagus.

So . . . how else can I cook asparagus?
