Cats And The Christmas Tree

As with most years we put our tree on a table. This helps keep it out of the cats’ way. With our first cat the weekend we brought the tree in the house she spend two days throwing up. My husband is convinced that she ate a needle and it bothered her stomach so ever since then we are fastidious about needles on the floor. I vacuum often when we have a tree that sheds a lot. One year, when the tree was on the floor, I was vacuuming ALL the time because the cat would walk by with tail up and knock a load of needles off the tree. Another reason why we put our tree on a table. We are fortunate to have a very tall ceiling where we put the tree. We have also experienced cats drinking the tree water. That can’t happen.

BC, as in Before Cat(s), I had purchased some “Tree Saver”. It goes in the tree water and supposedly it helps the tree last longer. Well, can’t put that in the tree water with cats. Don’t know what it is in, but I bet they shouldn’t be drinking it. And so we don’t do that, but also, “they” say that the pesticides and chemicals that the trees are grown with shouldn’t be ingested by cats. So it is not a good idea for cats to drink the water that the tree is in. Plus, even though we replenish the water daily the dish doesn’t get washed and the water is just sitting in there for a month . . . cats don’t need to be drinking that. So my hubby came up with a simple cat deterrent. He just cut some cardboard and put it over the tree’s dish. Normally, it can’t be seen. But this is a different kind of tree, it doesn’t have any low branches, so the dish can be seen. But that is ok. It not THAT noticeable and it keeps the cats out of the water.

That means neither needles nor ornaments get knocked down.

Now this is only the third Christmas that we have had these cats and so far so good. In fact, what I did this year was so out of the ordinary, yet they didn’t bother anything. I was in a rush to get the boxes emptied and put up so I just pulled a bunch of the stuff out of the boxes and left it lying around. And we had boxes in the house for weeks. And to my knowledge, they didn’t bother anything. Nessa liked to jump in and sit in the middle of some garland that took me days to hang.

I do play with them A LOT during Christmas. I make sure I get up early so we have a lot of play time. Also, since I am home, when they ask (and they DO ask) to play, if I can, I stop what I am doing and play with them. I figure if they are not bored then they will not mess with the Christmas tree and decorations.

I also tell them “No!” for just looking. If they LOOK at the tree, I say, “No.”  They are really good girls because not only is there a tree in their house it displaces their tower.  I figure we have about 30 days.  At least we did with Spot.  Day 31, she let us know she was done.

How does your cat handle a tree inside the house for a month?

Kitty On The Tree

Posted by terrepruitt on December 30, 2016

I know, I have done ornaments for the last two weeks, but I really love Christmas and all the decorations and my ornaments!  Hardly anyone sees all our great ornaments so I am taking advantage of my blog and posting Christmas Tree ornaments!  This will be the last one, at least that is the plan.  Who knows, I might take a picture I love as I am “undecorating” and want to post it.  I will try to refrain.  But this is a NEW ornament.  I received it as a gift and it is just so cute.  She is BIG, but light, so it will be easy to find a spot for her on the tree every year.  YAY!  Love my new addition. So this is my last Friday Photo of 2016.  I will be keeping this “feature” in 2017.  This is also my LAST post of 2016.

Thank you for reading and liking.  Thank you even more for commenting.  I love interacting with readers.  I wish all of you a happy and fun New Year’s Eve.  And I wish all of you a GREAT 2017!

Hanging Among The Stars

Posted by terrepruitt on December 23, 2016

I have a large assortment of ornaments.  I love them all.  I am not one to have a theme for the Christmas tree or only hang certain ornaments on the tree.  I love all types of ornaments.  My hubby is not really all that fond of Christmas, but he does have some ornaments that he loves.  He loves his superhero ornaments and his Star Trek ornaments.  I thought it was funny that this one (which one is it, Honey?) ended up among the stars.

I LOVE Christmas Tree Ornaments!

Posted by terrepruitt on December 16, 2016

So, you might have noticed that I love Christmas.  I love the decorations.  I love the lights.  I love all the sparkle and shine.  It is a lot of extra work and there are a lot of “extra” things to do.  But I still love it.  This year we got a really big tree.  I thought I would be able to put all of our ornaments on it.  But sometimes REAL trees don’t want to support all of the ornaments we have.  Plus I had a lot of “extra” stuff to think about this year, so I actually did not put all of the ornaments on the tree.  There are still A LOT of ornaments on the tree, just not all of them.

You might have seen one of my posts about going to the ocean.  Well, on at least one of those trips we bought two new (oh, there might have been more) Christmas Tree ornaments.  They are so great.  They are sparkly, just like I like ’em.

What do YOU think?

Cancelling A Tradition

Posted by terrepruitt on April 4, 2015

And it is making me kind of sad.  But apparently it has been a long time coming.  I wrote about it in 2011.  So, it has been five years.  It is an end of an era.  As I typed the letter I remembered a time when I waited to open the package until my husband got home.  It was an exciting moment for me.  It was like a big reveal.  He did not care as much as I did, but it was exciting to me.  Every year I would get excited to see what pretty design they used for the snowflake.  What color the “gems” would be.  But the last two years I opened it with trepidation.  Was I going to have to go through the trouble of sending it back?  Well, this year, I didn’t have to go through the trouble of sending it back because when I called and said it was not acceptable they just said to discard it.  And they sent me a new one.  Yeah, I dreaded opening it too.  And for good reason.  The “gems” are all crooked and not quite where they should be.  My Lenox ornaments are something I collected.  They were something I treasured.  Well, this was it.  I am cancelling my annual snowflake subscription.  I really don’t see the point in paying for something of which the quality continues to get worse and worse.  So I am sending off a letter of cancellation.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoSilly, I know.  But, to me it is always a little sad when a well loved tradition must be stopped.  There are many reasons traditions and customs must change.  Some of those reasons are good.  But when something has to stop because it just isn’t worth it any longer, that is sad.  I could continue to receive them and have that feeling of dread when I do.  I think the package actually sat on my counter for a few days before I even bothered to open it this year.  See?  Not that same.  Not the same as being so excited to open it you want to share the experience with your loved one.  Not.  The.  Same.

I know this is silly, but . . . . since I brought it up a few years ago, I thought I might as well do a follow up.  Plus, if you have seen any of my pictures at Christmastime you have seen my Lenox ornaments.  They are so pretty and sparkly I always take photos of them and I always share.  So, you are familiar with my love of them.  Sigh.

Handcrafted really is not a good selling point unless the quality of it is good.  And, the boxes say, “American By Design”.  Means nothing, especially when the quality is bad.

When I think about cancelling, I don’t want to.  I still want to receive my pretty ornament each year.  But then when I think about the dread and the quality I have been receiving . . . I just gotta do it.

Perhaps there is another collector type of ornament I can collect?  Do you have anything you collect?

More Sparkle, More Shine, More Fun!

Posted by terrepruitt on December 13, 2014

I understand that Christmastime/the Holidays are a sad time for some people.  For those people I send light and say prayers, but for those of  you who love to let the joy of the Holidays in, I have some things I want to share.  It occurred to me as I was doing some things that what I  was doing made my Holidays super fun.  It made me think that, perhaps all that silly stuff is part of why I love the Holidays so much.  You  want more fun?  You wanna squeeze even more joy out of or into your Holidays.  Maybe some of these things will add more to your Holidays,  maybe you will think they are a waste of time or they won’t work for you, fine.  But they make me happy.  So here is MY list of things I do to give my Holidays more sparkle.

>>>>>>>Cleaning before decorating is awesome.

A few years in a row I was trying to clean at the same time I was decorating and that just really bugged me.  With the house all clean beforehand I can run from room to room putting up the decorations wherever I want.  I don’t have to clean one table or shelf and decorate as I go.  I know this sounds weird to some people, but putting my sparkly decorations on a dusty shelf next to some dingy dusty shelf item just doesn’t work for me.

>>>>>>>Shop all year round.

So this is one thing that does a lot of things for me.  I am listing them in no particular order.

–Shopping all year round helps spread the cost of Christmas out over the year.  The Holidays can be expensive so if I can spread out the bill that helps.

–When I see something and it makes me think of someone who I shop for then I might as well get it so I don’t have the stress of trying to find something for them when it is Christmastime.

–It is really fun looking at the stuff at Christmastime (when you go to wrap it) that you bought earlier in the year.  If you are like me,  you don’t remember all that bought, so it is so fun discovering it again.

>>>>>>>IF you shop all year round keep a gift log (in one spot) of what you bought for who AND where you stashed it.

I don’t know if you have ever bought a gift for someone then forgot about it or just forgot where you put it only to discover it later.   Well, I keep a list of who, what, and where!  That way if I see something I want to buy someone I bought for I can refer to the list instead of opening bags.  Having a list also helps keep me from “over-buying” for someone.  So there are a few reasons to keep a list.

>>>>>>>Consider decorations and ornaments gifts.  Enjoy the walk down memory lane.  To me opening my ornaments and all my decorations is like getting hundreds of gifts every year.  I love decorating and I love all my sparkly and glittery ornaments so unwrapping them or pulling them out of the boxes is super fun.  My mom gave me a lot of my ornaments!

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYo, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA>>>>>>>Saving beautiful cards.  I’ve posted before about saving Christmas cards we receive and using them as decorations.  Well, this year, I was in a rush and I wasn’t going to hang up the previous years’ cards.  But I decided it would just take a minute or two.  So as I was putting them up I was glancing inside at who they were from and that just made me happy.

>>>>>>>I let go of my desire for a perfect tree.  Not sure if I have mentioned this in a previous post, but I used to insist on buying one that was perfect.  Ya know, like on a Christmas card.  Well, as you know, those don’t exist and we don’t need a perfect one anyway. We do better with one that is kinda flat on one side and then slopes nicely on the other side.  The flat side goes toward the window and allows us to have enough room to walk by the tree.  If it is “perfectly” shaped it has to stick out into the walkway and just doesn’t work.  Plus by the time we get home and decorate whatever tree we buy it is “perfect”.  Yup, just like Charlie Brown’s Christmas tree!

Ok, again, I know that the Holidays are a struggle for some people.  I hope those of you that struggle make it through. I know that you will not be helped by a clean shelf or unwrapping a beloved ornament.  You are in my thoughts and prayers, these ideas are for people who enjoy the holidays.  And perhaps want to eek out more.  Perhaps cause less stress and create a little more sparkle and shine.

Merry Christmas.  (It’s almost here!)

What do YOU do to get more joy out or your Holidays?

Letting Go

Posted by terrepruitt on December 7, 2010

In my most recent Nia class, I decided that I wanted to help people focus on the good of the season.  I think that sometimes there is a lot of negative emotions around the Holiday season.  By negative emotions I mean the way people actually feel during this time of year.  There is always the ever present I-don’t-believe-in-Christ-so-I-don’t-agree-with-any-of-it, the it-makes-me-sad-so-therefore-I-am-going-to-be-sad, the WHAT?-ITS-CHRISTMAS!  The feelings of inadequacy; there is not enough money, goals for the year were not accomplished, baking isn’t getting done, cards aren’t being sent, house isn’t getting cleaned, nothing is enough, there is too much . . . . .oh my the pressure!  I was thinking all of this is negative stuff.  So in class the focus was pushing away the negative, somewhat rejecting it, with the intent of bringing in the positive.

Both the “negative” and the “positive” is different for everyone so that was a very individualized point.  We didn’t discuss anything that I mentioned above, so everyone could rid themselves of whatever they needed and attract whatever they wanted. It was very nice.  It is a focus and an intent that can be used any time, I just thought we’d give it a spin this season.

As with all focuses and intents we use in a Nia class they can be carried into one’s day and/or daily living.  This is where the thought of “letting go” keeps popping into my head.  I love this season.  I love cleaning my house, getting it all ready to put up the decorations.  Then I love spending days . . . at least two or three days decorating the tree and the house.  I always laugh because sometimes I can’t remember where I “normally” put something and it might end up in a new spot.  Then I spend the season either saying, “Yes, that’s good.” or  “No, that really doesn’t work.”

I sometimes feel very foolish for the sheer joy I feel when I look at a silly Christmas decoration that I cherish.  But I do.  I feel joy at the beauty and the sparkle of Christmas.  This year since I am a bit limited in my movements I am having to really draw on that joy.  I am going to have to strategically place things so that I can see “Christmas” everywhere yet not have as many decorations out and up.

Things tend to work in concert.  We ended up with a much, much smaller tree than usual.  Cool, since my hubby had to handle it without my help.  Since it is smaller it will require less ornaments which will allow me to stay off my foot.  Also a small tree requires less maintenance and the couches didn’t have to be moved.  See?  It is all gonna work out fine, I just need to let it go.  Reject the negative when I start to feel a pout coming on.  It’s ok that it is my favorite time of year and I can’t run around.  Oh well.  I can walk.  My toe/foot IS healing.  It is all good.  For heaven’s sake its Christmastime.  Let the negative go, embrace the season, embrace the unity.
