Turning Off “Recommended Videos”

Posted by terrepruitt on April 24, 2017

Ahh, just a quick post today as it seems that the day flew by and I didn’t even notice.  It started out good this morning.  I thought I was doing good time-wise, but then the next thing I know it, my cat, the little one, is whining.  I thought, “What?  Why are you whining?”  And I looked at the clock and it was a few minutes after 6:00.  We feed them at 6:30, but when she whines for food, I will feed her because she is the little one that could use to gain a few pounds.  I have noticed that she will whine before feeding time and if I don’t feed her she will eat the dry food.  Then when I do put the wet food down she is not hungry and the other cat will eat it all the wet food.  So I stopped what I was doing to feed them.  I am feeling very behind (in regards to my to-do list) and it is already 6:30!  So . . . just a quick post.  How do you feel about “recommended videos” on Youtube?  When I am on Youtube and I am watching something, I don’t mind them so much because often times it is something interesting.  Plus there is the option not to watch, of course.  But I don’t care for them on my blog.  I mean, I post something that I want to share with you, but I don’t necessarily want to share the recommended video.  I don’t even know what it will be.  It could be something I don’t really want on my blog.  So anyway . . . if you are posting a video from Youtube into your WordPress blog you can turn off the recommended video, if you want.

If you don’t want the recommended videos to show up after your video is finished playing when you embed a video in your WordPress blog, you just have to add ?rel=0 at the end of your video URL like this:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MJOGgGHb_Xk?rel=0

Not sure if you are interesting in turning recommended videos off when you include a Youtube video in one of your blog posts, but I thought I would share with you in case you might be.  Perhaps you hadn’t thought about it before.  Well, now that you know you have to option to turn it off, perhaps you can think about it and decide.

What are your thoughts?  Do you care?  Would you turn it off now that you know you can?

New For 2016

Posted by terrepruitt on January 4, 2016

WHOA!  2016!  Welcome, huh?  I think I remember posting last year about how the year felt different.  Didn’t feel so NEW.  Perhaps that is just a symptom of age?  Nothing new here, move along.  No, no, not you, don’t move along!  I am going to do something new on my blog.  I would love to be doing something exciting, but these next two months are going to be super busy for me.  So, I am going to make a shift that MIGHT help with that.  You may have noticed that the last half of 2015, I didn’t post on Thursdays every month.  Then a couple of months I skipped posting on Saturday.  A few of the times I didn’t post throughout the year it was because I forgot, but the majority, I had decided not to post.  Sometimes it doesn’t come as easy as other times so, I just gave in.  Well, I am going to try a new schedule to see if that helps with being able to post on my self imposed schedule.  I am going to try posting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  I would like to post Mondays and Thursdays, but Thursdays are the days that give me the most trouble.  If I had a post prepared it would be fine, but I am not always that on top of things.  I find myself trying to both get dinner ready before yoga class and write a blog post.  Then I am off to teach class and when I come back I have to finish cooking dinner and write the post, leaving my hubby sitting all by himself for the evening.  If you saw the size of his pouty lip you would agree that I need to do something different.

So, here starts a new page for my blog.  I have been blogging since 2009, so for seven years my schedule has been Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  Now onto:  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  I am sure it will take me a few to get used to it, but we will see.  Depending on things it could end up being just two days . . . we will see!

I thought I would share some of the fun facts that WordPress shares with me (I am sure I am the only one that is so special) about the past year.  Fun stuff!

Bow Stance

Posted by terrepruitt on January 30, 2010

One thing about a blog on WordPress, I can see search terms.  My blog statistics show me terms used in a search that led people to my blog.  One thing I noticed was bow stance came up a lot in the search terms.  People want to know what it is, how to do it, what is it for, etc.

So I thought I would post another post on the Bow Stance.  I am familiar with the stance from other exercises and other exercise classes.  It is not unique to Nia, but Nia includes it in the Nia 52 Moves.  I feel it can be compared to a lunge.

The bow stance is one leg bent with the foot flat on the ground, the other leg is bent and out behind with the heel lifted and the ball of the foot on the ground.  The feet are not aligned, so if you were to bring your back foot forward it would not collide with the foot in front.  Can you picture it?  It is kind of like a lunge.

The Nia Technique book states that the benefits are conditioning for walking and dealing with changing levels as the body’s center moves up and down.

My feelings about the bow stance are that it is great for working out the lower body and for practicing balance.

The bow stance can be done with many variations.  The typical bow stance is that described above, but, when the feet are place wider apart as if on two railroad ties the stance actually becomes more stable, but if you add moving arms to that it become less stable.  If you were to raise and lower your entire body, it changes the dynamics yet again.  If you were to add motion to the hips, it changes it again.  If you were to place the back foot further back it changes it again.  Another way to challenge the muscles is to change which foot holds the weight, leaning the weight to the front or to the back.

This stance is used a lot in Nia routines and I imagine that is because it is such a great exercise and it can be used so many different ways.  It fits into many different songs and adds to the dance.  Sometimes we move in and out of it quickly, sometimes we stay and play.  It is a great movement.

Previously I mentioned it being good for the lower body that is because you can see how it is very good for the feet and ankles too.  When the back foot it resting on the ball of the foot, it helps with both strength and flexibility of the foot.  When movement is added to the stance it helps with both strength and flexibility of the ankle.

So we answered the question originally stated:

the bow stance is somewhat like a lunge
one foot is in front flat on the ground, the other is in back with the heel up, both legs are bent
it helps with strength, balance, and flexibilty

I hope that helps.  If you have anything to add or ask, please do so.  And, as always thank you for stopping by. If you want to see how the bow stances is added to a dance workout and you want to try it yourself, join me in a class.
