New For 2016

WHOA!  2016!  Welcome, huh?  I think I remember posting last year about how the year felt different.  Didn’t feel so NEW.  Perhaps that is just a symptom of age?  Nothing new here, move along.  No, no, not you, don’t move along!  I am going to do something new on my blog.  I would love to be doing something exciting, but these next two months are going to be super busy for me.  So, I am going to make a shift that MIGHT help with that.  You may have noticed that the last half of 2015, I didn’t post on Thursdays every month.  Then a couple of months I skipped posting on Saturday.  A few of the times I didn’t post throughout the year it was because I forgot, but the majority, I had decided not to post.  Sometimes it doesn’t come as easy as other times so, I just gave in.  Well, I am going to try a new schedule to see if that helps with being able to post on my self imposed schedule.  I am going to try posting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  I would like to post Mondays and Thursdays, but Thursdays are the days that give me the most trouble.  If I had a post prepared it would be fine, but I am not always that on top of things.  I find myself trying to both get dinner ready before yoga class and write a blog post.  Then I am off to teach class and when I come back I have to finish cooking dinner and write the post, leaving my hubby sitting all by himself for the evening.  If you saw the size of his pouty lip you would agree that I need to do something different.

So, here starts a new page for my blog.  I have been blogging since 2009, so for seven years my schedule has been Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  Now onto:  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  I am sure it will take me a few to get used to it, but we will see.  Depending on things it could end up being just two days . . . we will see!

HelpYouWell.com Got a New Look!

After three years of teaching Nia and promoting it via my website, I have moved my website to a different host.  Sometimes it is nice to have a new look to things.  I don’t necessarily always feel the need for a new look.  Since I have limited time I don’t always enjoy going to a site that I visit often and have it be completely revamped so I have to spend extra time on it to find what I need.  But, I understand that it is nice to change things and have a fresh look.  Sometimes there are other reasons to change things, there might be other benefits that are sought so it is all just part of the change.  My site is still the best source for my Nia Class Schedule because even though I have been teaching at the same place for three years* sometimes there are changes.  Sometimes it is out of my control, like when one of the studios I teach at moves my class time, but sometimes I am holding a special class or announcing an additional Nia class (new Nia Class in Campbell).  Either way, it is best to always check my site for any adjustments that might occur in my Nia Class Schedule.  Otherwise you can find the same information on my new site as you could my old site.  The way is it arranged is slightly different as I put more of the information under headings instead of having the long list of pages on the side.  The new look to HelpYouWell.com is a nice way to start off 2012!

Because I switched to a new host I have to go through all of my blog posts and update my links, both the hotlinks in the text AND the pictures.  Not sure everyone even realizes that the different color words in a post are links to other things.  Usually they link to my site, so since the page addresses have changed, I am working on going through all 491 posts.  If you click on a link and it does not work, then I have not gotten to that one yet.  I always welcome the information though, so if you want to let me know, I would appreciate it.  So far I have made it through September 2011, and May 2009.

*I have been teaching at the same place for three years.  I am still at the studio in the Willow Glen area of San Jose.  For three years I have had a Monday and Wednesday morning class at 9 am.  I would love for you to join us one of these days.  I make it a point to teach on Holidays because since it is a morning class that is the time when many people can make it.  When they have the time off of work.  So if you ever have the opportunity please join us.  We are there every Monday and Wednesdays (do check the schedule, though).

Events, Thoughts, Happenings, Christmas, Things

The studio I teach Nia at in the Willow Glen Area of San Jose is having their annual Holiday Party.  I have been teaching at the studio for almost three years (three years in January 2012).  This is the first time I have been able to make it to the party.  I am very excited.  They have food, performances, demos, make-up, drumming, dancing, and just plain fun.  If you are local and you are able join us.  (02.16.12 The even has taken place, see my next post https://terrepruitt.com/2011/12/13/halanda-studio-holiday-party-2011/  for a little summary and pictures.)

I think that people are not comfortable turning their head.  While out today I was watching people back out of parking spaces in parking lots and I was amazed.  Most of the people I watched did not look back while backing up?  What is up with that?  You are actually supposed to TURN YOUR HEAD AND LOOK BACK while backing up.  I saw so many people glance left then right then front and just start going and KEEP going.  I understand sometimes you look left, then right, then front as you start easing out, but then you turn and keep looking back.  Nope, not the people I saw.  They just zipped out as if people coming around the big huge car parked besides them could see they were backing out and would stop.  Crazy.  I am surprised I didn’t see a lot of collisions.

Last night we went out to dinner with a group of friends.  It is our second annual Christmas dinner.  Last year it was at a friend’s house.  This year we went to a restaurant.  We ordered a few of everything from each section of the menu and we shared it family style.  It was all very good.  Some of it was very unusual.  It is one of those restaurants where the menu changes all the time so you can’t go there expecting to get something you got last time.  One of the stand out items for me was Pumpkin Ravioli, Sage-Walnut Pesto, and Pomegranate.  The Pomegranate just pushed it over the edge of yummy.  The Lasagna of Pork Sausage, Zucchini and Mozzarella was excellent too.  One of the weirdest things was Pumpkin Ice Cream, Hazelnuts, Aged Balsamico.  I cannot say that I would recommend this.  The Balsamico was not sweet enough to tie the flavors together.  In fact when it hit the portion of my tongue that registers sour my face did the lemon taste face and my eyes started pouring water.  A bit TOO much of a contrast to me.  I am not usually a fan of the family style eating but since there were so many things to taste I really enjoyed it last night.

We got a bum tree this year.  I picked it.  I thought I did GREAT.  My husband was shocked when he came home and I told him to be careful.  We can’t understand why it is perfectly green and looks great, but it acting as if it is dead and brown.  Needles are falling off it at an incredible rate.  I am bummed.  It will be a very short Christmas tree time this year.  The cat will be happy.  She is really good with a tree in the house for about 30 days.  She will tolerate it.  Maybe bat at an ornament once or twice.  But on the 31st day.  She had been known to give an ornament a whack.  To me that is her telling me that she is done.  When we have a tree we move her cat tower away from the best window to another window.  The other window is not as tall so she can’t see as well on the top.  Plus it is just not in the “right” spot.  There is a TREE in the right spot.  This displacement doesn’t really make her happy.  At first she is a little excited to be in a new spot but that wears off quickly.  Also the tree is in the best sun spot.  And with this tree I am not even opening the curtains to let the sun and heat on it.  For as long as we have had her, she will let the tree be until we are over 30 days.  Then she tells me in a very catly way that she is done.  So this year she will be happy because it will not last 30 days.  Sad but true.

Nia Temporary Studio – Because We Love It

If you follow me on Twitter, are a Facebook friend of mine, or look at my website, you will have seen that my Nia students and I have been doing Nia in the park.  I teach Nia at two different facilities.  There is my Monday and Wednesday class that meets at 9:00 am.  We meet in a little dance studio in an area of San Jose called Willow Glen.  The studio is about 900 square feet, it has a laminate floor and a large mirror.  It is long and slightly narrow.  It is a nice little place.  I have been teaching there for over two and a half years.  Some of my students have been dancing Nia with me for that long.  In November of 2010 I started teaching Nia on Fridays at a different studio in Los Gatos.  It was a different type of studio . . . it was more of an exercise studio where exercise classes are held.  They had a separate room for Pilates Reformer classes.  Well at the end of August this studio said they were moving.  When they would be done with the move and how it all was going to work was very up in the air.  At one point I was told by one of the owners that we would only miss one Nia class.  So I just decided that one class would be ok to miss.  It would not be worth the time involved to secure another place to hold a class.  But then the next week we were told it would be at least another week.  So I asked my students if they wanted to hold a class in the park.  Many students are wanting to participant in Nia three times a week so they said yes.  We decided to try it.

Well, I think that not having Nia that one Friday really helped us all realize that we do like to have it three times a week.  Monday, Wednesday, and Friday just seems pretty perfect.  On the Friday we met in the park we didn’t know how it would go.  We didn’t know if the weather would cooperate.  We didn’t know if there would be too many people for us to dance on the volleyball court.  See that is one thing, I have often entertained the idea of do Nia in a park, because grass really sound likes a great place to dance barefoot.  Natures cushioned dance floor.  But I have always been concerned about holes, bumps, and ruts.  The thought of someone turning their ankle on the grass has always kept me from following through with it.  Plus, the idea that was tossed about had always been an evening class.  I imagine parks being really busy in the evening.

This park that we have been at is really close to the studio in Willow Glen.  There is a basketball court and a volleyball court that have been empty in the mornings.  I imagine the basketball court is occupied in the evenings, but while we are there it is empty.  The volleyball court is somewhat in the shade and provides us with a smooth flat surface to move on.  The park seems rather busy the hour before we arrive.  Seems like many loving dog owners take their dogs out for morning exercise.  There are mother’s and children at the playground.  We have had to dance without music when the lawnmower has obliterated the sound.  But that was only once or twice for a song or two.

The studio has been closed for longer than we had anticipated.  So we have been doing Nia in the park for four weeks.  The weather has been very nice.  Once it was warmer than we like, but so far we have had great temperatures.  This week it is raining.  The forecast is saying that it will be sunny on Friday, but we will see.  The studio has also announced that it will not be open for two more Fridays.  So we might get this week in at the park and next week.  I have been leaving it up to my students.  If they tell me they are going to be there, then I say, I will be there too!

I have really enjoyed our time at the park.  I sort of wish that we could do it there all year, but with winter coming, although winters in the San Fransisco Bay Area are not full of snow, we do get rain and I don’t think we want to dance in the rain.  So I am sad that our time in the park is ending.  I hope that we will be inspired to do Nia in the park again at some point after these next two weeks.  I am really doing it because my students wanted to do it because we love Nia.  I know that some classes take place on the beach and other outdoor places.  I am so happy that I have been able to experience Nia outdoors and share it with my students.

iPad

I have had the opportunity to actually use the iPad.  This is somewhat of an update from my iPad Coolness post in which I said, “Oooo!” but didn’t really get to use the iPad.  This time I inherited one so I have it set up for me.

This version of the iPad does not have a camera nor a phone.  I have a camera and a phone with a camera so I am covered.  But I could see if you carry your iPad around it would be nice to have all of that included.  I understand that you wouldn’t hold your iPad up to your face, as you would a phone, but headset or bluetooth device could make it nice.

I do love the beautiful display.  It is sooo pretty.  I know that might sound simple, but . . . c’mon . . . it IS pretty.  It is crisp, it is clean–well, except for all of the finger prints on it.  Because of its amazing touch-the-screen technology and the fact that the screen becomes the keyboard there is always finger prints and swipes on it.  So some of its clarity gets dulled under all of that.

I was intrigued by the calendar function on the iPad and I have to laugh because I haven’t even looked at the calendar on the iPad this time.  I have been using it to play a game (We Rule) my husband and I play.  Because the iPad is so much larger than the iPhone it is much easier.  I have also been using it to do a lot of my work on the internet.

I had mentioned in my last post that I really like the way the webpages show up.  As you can see in the picture it shows the webpages that are open or easily opened.  There can be up to nine webpages available.  I like that since I am always going to HelpYouWell.com, the NiaNow website, my blog, my e-mail, my Yelp page, Nia Class info, and so on.  It makes it really easy to sit and “watch” TV.  While I am sitting there I can do research for a post.  I do enjoy the ease at which I can quickly surf the web and read things, but I do not like typing on the iPad for any length of time.  I would not choose to write a blog post on it. Often times I turn on a computer to comment on blogs or Facebook.  I am keyboard person.  I need the SENSATION of the keys.  The touch screen has me typing gibberish.  I am still learning, so my next post regarding the iPad could be that I use it for everything.

The iPad is heavy though . . . and I don’t mean it is HEAVY as if I can’t hold it or lift it, but when you think of the position in which you hold it it is heavy.  Now the iPad2—but that is a whole other blog post.  Since I do find myself setting it down a lot I end up looking down at it.  With a monitor (when I am on a laptop or a “regular” computer) at least I am looking UP instead of down—that actually can be another blog post too (hump back)!

I suspect that as time goes on I will learn to use it more and appreciate it more.  Now I am just experiencing the amazingness of mobility.  I am not at the point where I can give up my tower.  I am having to do without my tower at the moment because it is being worked on.  But it is four years old, by the time I need a new tower/computer (I am getting a new one this month), I might be fully integrated into this iPad thing.  It is amazing.  It is fast.  It is pretty.  It is the future.

Index For The Nia Technique Book

There is a book about Nia.  The Nia Technique Book authored by Debbie Rosas* and Carlos Rosas**.  When I first thought of teaching Nia I bought it.  I think I have said before that I thought Nia was a little too “woo-woo”.  When I read the book it helped me see that Nia is based on the science and the design of the body.  I often refer to my book.  I have little tabs stuck on almost every page and that gets bothersome.
While the book has a table of contents it is sparse and it does not have an index.  I always find myself searching and flipping and going back and forth in the pages because I can’t find what I want and I know it is there.  Last week when planning the Nia Playshop I just flipped back and forth one too many times.  So I created an index.I created an index of all the things I want to look up and arranged in alphabetically.  I also arranged it so that there are subsections within the index.  But then that seemed so long so I did an index with just the main sections and a separate index below of the subsections.  So, yes, I have the index arranged three different ways so that you can have a choice on how to look at it. It’s on my site HelpYouWell.com.

Comments: How does one learn Nia?  If the classes are drop in but if I have never done this before how will I    know the moves?  Do you have classes for beginners?  If so, when do they start?  How many classes must one attend in order to learn all of the moves? What is the nearest cross street to your location on Lincoln Ave.?

My reply:

Dear Lovely Spirit Interested in Nia:

Do you like to move?  Do you like to dance?  Do you care what others think of you?  You are a Lovely Being and I invite you to let go of caring about that.

Nia is not about “the moves”, Nia is about fun.  And moving and learning and not caring what others think.  Do you think you might like something like that?  Do you think you might like to remove your shoes and just get down and shake your groove thing?  What makes Nia different than other exercise classes (well, ONE of the things that makes it different) is that we don’t judge.  If you are not causing yourself or others harm then it is ok.

If one person goes left, and the other person goes right—as long as there is not a collision—it really does not matter.  We are not performing.  Nigel, Mia, and Adam are not there.  It is just us.  Those who want to move.  We have fun.  We don’t mind if and when we don’t do it “right”.

You, Lovely Spirit, will know the moves because you will be listening to the best, most perfect, most honest teacher there is—-YOU!  YOU will be in charge.  You will be the one that tells you what to do and how much to do.  I might say, “raise your arm” and your arm might say, “No Lovely Spirit, not today.” And you will be moving PERFECTLY because you will have listened, and I and everyone in the class will know that you respected yourself and did what YOUR body needed.  That is part of what makes Nia great.

ALL of my classes are for beginners.  All of my classes are for experts. Because all of us are beginners and experts.  Nia is about YOUR BODY’S WAY!

Come and see.  Try not to be concerned about learning the moves.  If you have looked at Nia’s 52 Moves, and are thinking about having to know all of them—don’t!  We move as the body was designed to move so when you come you will be amazed at how your body just moves on its own.  And because of that,
it will feel fabulous!

The NEAREST cross street is Garfield (it is where Rotten Robbies is), the “biggest one” with a light is Coe.  The studio is between Coe and Willow in Willow Glen.  Does that help?

I want you to come and feel comfortable.  Nia is about JOY and comfort and feeling good.  It is not about “moves” and “perfection” and performing.  We listen to the music and I lead a routine, but you are not required to do exactly what I do.  You are encouraged to move as YOUR BODY WANTS TO MOVE!

Science, Craft, and Art

There are a lot of tools used in Nia.  The way that Nia describes each principle includes the Science of the principle, the Craft of the principle, and the Art of the principle.

For instance, the latest principle I posted about was Nia White Belt Principle #5, a portion of that being Awareness.  The Science of awareness would be that you can make observations about your body as you move through your day.  You can be aware of your hand as you pull it back from the mug of coffee that was too hot.  You can be aware of the adjustment you make to your entire body to make it feel more comfortable in the seat belt.  Notice how you scrunch your toes in your shoes.  You can be conscious of the things that cause discomfort and maybe, in the future respond and change before the discomfort becomes pain.

With the awareness you can develop an ongoing conversation with your body that can help you move more freely and comfortable throughout your life.

The Craft of awareness is where you acquire the ability to sense with your entire body.  Utilize not just your eyes and your ears but your sense of smell and proprioception.  The craft are the exercises or the practices that we do in order to assist with the awareness.

Possible exercise, to increase awareness:

—brush your teeth with your eyes closed, sensing the tooth brush on each tooth
—brush your hair with your eyes closed, and notice the moment the brush comes in contact with your hair or head
—as you reach out to touch something image yourself touching it before you actually touch it
—then ask yourself; what will it feel like, what sensation will the nerves in my hand allow my brain to sense, will
touch it softly or roughly?

And as you go through your everyday movements observe if there is any tightness or discomfort.  Ask yourself is there an adjustment that can be made to your habitual movement–to the way you do it normally–that could easy that comfort?  Is there something you could do to tweak it and move your closer to pleasure?  Try it that way.

Recognize the body as a work of Art.  The Art of awareness is to be aware of the mechanics and beauty of the working body. Visuals could help with the art piece of awareness.  If there was an area of the body that was uncomfortable or there was a constriction of the movement, picture the blood full of life giving nutrients rushing to that area.  Picture the nutrients as different colors rushing in to saturate the discomfort and color as paint on a canvas.

Or picture any area of the body that could use relaxation as a tight ball of rubber bands and either just picture the ball become loose and opening and airy or picture it as you are moving and stretching that are.  All the while being aware.

This is just an example of how the Nia applies all three tools, Science, Craft, and Art to a principle.  The three are also used as tools for other purposes, but this is just to throw some light on the ways that Nia is shared, practiced, learned, taught, and enjoyed.

If you would like some tips on how to move with Nia, such as:

~Use visual imagery to make movements feel natural.

~Combine small movements with large movements.

~Use your Base, Core, Upper Extremities, breath and voice to add energy and power to your moves.

My Twitter Advice / Tips

I am not a Twitter expert.  I’ve said that before.  I learn something everyday.  I have learned a few things and I thought I would share them with you since some of the people that read this are actually new to Twitter.

Twitter allows 140 characters.  My advice:

1—When you tweet a link to something, give a little explanation of what readers will find once they click that link.  If not a description, some words that might give them a clue as to what kind of link it is.  As an example, “I love animal videos.” or “Don’t you love dance videos?”  or “Here’s an article on fitness.”

2—If you want to type something along with your link you might want to use something that shortens the link.  I use TinyURL.com or bit.ly.  The link can be copied into the site and the site shortens it for you, and you copy and past it into your tweet.

Some programs like HootSuite and TweetDeck have “shorten links” built into them.  On HootSuite you have to copy the link into the field (highlighted in the picture in pink) and click “Shrink It’.  With TweetDeck you can opt to have links shorten automatically (see the little box next to “Auto Shorten URLs?”).

Which brings me to #3.

3—Sometimes you might not want to shorten a link.  Sometimes I don’t like to shorten the link because the link itself helps explain what the user will see when they click on it.  Or I want people to see the name of my blog (http://terrepruitt.com) or the name of my website (http://www.helpyouwell.com/).  I think it is good to put the names out there so people can remember it.

I believe there are reasons to shorten and reason not to, but, if you never knew you could shorten you wouldn’t be making a decision for yourself, right?  So I am sharing with you here.

4—Don’t send auto DMs* when someone follows you.  Even when you try to make them look personal, they are not.  Everyone knows it.  Especially when you are following the person because they followed you first, then you get a DM that says, “I’ll follow you back.”  Uh, yeah, right.

Food Diaries

I believe one of the most useful tools in the quest for health and wellness is the food diary. There are many ways you can keep track of what you eat (and drink). Remember that unless it is water, it counts for something. Sometimes we are not very conscious of what we are eating. Especially if we are busy or it is a habit, for example you cut the crust off of the sandwich for the kids and automatically eat it. That counts. Bites of things count. If you don’t eat the whole dish of ice cream but you have a few bites that counts.

So, you need to decide what your goal is, then you can decide how you want to keep track. You can simply write down everything you eat or you can keep track of what you eat AND how much. You can include calories, you can include amount of fat, you can include amount of protein. Your goal will assist you in deciding how much information you want to keep track of.

Now-a-days there are hundreds of options to keep track of what you ingest. There are online food diaries, or digital diaries, if you have an iPhone there are numerous applications that can help you. Food Diaries (of food logs) run from really easy to difficult. It depends on what you want to keep track of. I used to use one that I really liked because it was simply. But they changed it and made it difficult, so I am not going to even bother mentioning it here. There are plenty of free ones out there so you don’t need to pay a sign-up fee or a monthly fee. Once you decide what you want to keep track of I am sure you can find one that will do exactly that. You might want to keep in mind a few things, even if you don’t want to keep track of a certain thing now you might want to in the future so it might be nice if the one you use can keep track of multiple things (vitamins, minerals, etc.). It is really important to use one that allows you to customize your food. I found that most of the ones I looked at have a ton of Fast Food already programmed in, but I don’t eat fast food, so I had to input most of my food, then once I did that I could just click on the custom entry whenever I ate it.

Try it. Even if at first you just write down what you eat. It is a GREAT tool. Try it and you will see.
