December 30 Minute Movement Challenge – Day #24

Posted by terrepruitt on December 24, 2012

Whoa-ho-ho-ho!  It’s Christmas Eve!  WOW!  Ok, we were talking about this last week in my Nia class —- TECHNICALLY (!) it is Christmas Eve MORNING!  Funny that!  Anyway . . . . here we are the day before Christmas and, yes we are still on track with our December 30 Minute Movement Challenge, right?  YES!  Keep on going.  Let’s finish this up!

Thank you for being here.

Do I hear sleigh bells?  I’m gonna go look.  I’ll be back . . . . I might get my 30 minutes in chasing a sleigh!  But actually I have a Nia class to teach today, but only one.  I will probably end up counting that as my 30 minutes since it IS Christmas Eve and I have “Christmas Eve-y” things to do.  😉

Pictures Of Art Box Project San Jose – Round Two

Posted by terrepruitt on December 22, 2012

As I was coming home from Target, one day I saw a huge rose.  It made me happy.  I loved it.  Later on – as in months later – I was at a stop light and noticed a man sitting at a utility box.  As I drove past him I realized what he was doing and decided to stop and talk to him about it.  He explained it was something the city of San Jose was doing.  Anyone could sponsor a box and an artist would volunteer to paint it.  I first posted about this in July, then in August.  Since then I have taken a few pictures of painted boxes in my area.  I would love for people who have seen other art work to send me pictures so I could post more.  I’ve only seen six.  I am sure there are more.

These boxes make me happy.  Even if I don’t care for the art work, I love that they are adding art and color to the city.  I also think it is really great that the city is not paying for it and that they are sponsored projects.  As you are driving, walking, moving, living in San Jose look around.  See if you spot one.  Take a picture or two and send it to me.  If you can, take a picture of the “label” so we know who the artist is.  I forgot to get a picture of the label naming the artist of the coffee cup boxes.

I took a lot more than the pictures shown here and in my last post, but these were the ones that showed the art the best.

In my last post I mentioned that some of the boxes are very close to busy/traffic-y corners.   Like the rose.  That is a busy intersection.  I didn’t want to stand in the street as long as it would have taken to get a good shot.  I forgot that I had taken a picture while I was at the stop light on the other side of the street.  That one came out ok.  I love this rose!

This is the photo I took from across the street while waiting at the traffic light!  Such a vibrant rose.

Wow!  Look at the sponsor.  I just noticed that (right now as I was putting this picture in my post)!  Awesome “Ladies Loving All Art”.  That might spawn another blog post!

No, your vision is not off, you ARE seeing double . . . sort of.  Two shots looking the same, sorry, but I liked both angles even though they are just slightly different.  🙂

I am very happy about this project.  I think it is very cool.  Thank you, San Jose.  Thank you, sponsors.  Thank you artists for sharing your talent.

So, what do you think?  Do you have a favorite out of all six boxes?  They are all pretty cool, but I bet you have a favorite, huh?

Pictures Of Art Box Project San Jose

Posted by terrepruitt on December 20, 2012

One day driving in San Jose I noticed a utility box painted as a huge flower.  I thought it was the coolest idea.  The boxes are not the prettiest things and they are everywhere so why not paint them.  Then some time later, on my way home from either my Monday or Wednesday Nia class, I noticed a man sitting near the curb while I was at a stop light.  It didn’t register in my brain what he was doing until I was past him and the corner.  I had pull over to the curb and back up a little to get back to him.  He was painting the utility box.  He explained to be that it was the San Jose Art Box Project.  I posted about it in July.  I followed up with a post of his finished project in August.  Since then I have snapped a few pictures of boxes painted throughout the city.  Well, at least in the places I go.  I am sure there are other ones around that I don’t even see.  But I did happen to spot the ones on my normal paths.  I even found the flower one that I first noticed.  I wasn’t sure where I had noticed it, but then I found it.

Here are six that I have seen around.  I am sure there are more.  I would love for people to contact me and send me pictures so that I can include more on my blog.  Some might wonder what painted utility boxes have to do with health and wellness, and if they are wondering that then I doubt I could explain it.  But for those of you that appreciate a little color, I am sure you understand.  I might not even particularly like the way the box is painted, but I do like that fact that they are painted.  I love the fact that art is being added to our industrialization.  I love that the artist is basically a volunteer, they get paid, but I think that barely covers the cost of the paint. I love that people in the community are donating to such a project.

It is kind of fun to be sitting at a light just waiting for it to turn green and then all of a sudden spotting an Art Box.  Then it is fun planning the path to get to it.  Some of them are on really busy corners . . . . like the rose . . . I couldn’t really step out to far in the street to get a good shot, but I did what I could.

I believe the art on the box must be reflective of the neighborhood.  That would explain the coffee art box.  It was right in front of a Starbucks.

Normally I would put them in a collage, but I am short on time and so here are some of the pictures of the utilities boxes in San Jose.  I have a lot so this post will be some, then my next post will be the rest.

Stay tuned for the rose.  The box that I actually saw first and thought it was just a one time thing.

So how do you like the art so far?  Don’t you think it is cool?

The Nia Blue Belt Principle #6 Is Something We ALL Do

Posted by terrepruitt on December 18, 2012

The Nia Blue Belt Principle #6 is hilarious.  Ok, the principle itself is not hilarious it is just funny – to me – that it identifies something and names it.  But that is what some of the principles do for me.  The principles identify something that we do in everyday life.  Or they connect dance, Nia, teaching to something that is commonly known or done.  This is one of the principles that we – you, me, everyone – do all the time.  We – you, me, everyone – probably didn’t call it “Split, Ellipt, Blend” with a tagline of “Crafting With Attention”.  Basically the principle itself (Split, Ellipt, Blend) refers to attention.  As I was writing this post, I typed that the tagline in this case refers to teaching Nia, but then I realized that, while yes, the whole principle is designed to enhance our Nia practice and teaching, – as do many of the Nia principles – it can apply to everyday life.  So what is Split, Ellipt, Blend?

Well, as I said it has to do with attention, so in an everyday situation you split off your attention from others and focus on yourself, you focus 100% on another, and you blend it so your attention is on both.  So sometimes you might be doing something and completely focused on yourself and what you are doing.  You might not even notice other people or other things around you.  You are 100% concentrating.  Then you hear a loud voice and it is someone, your boss, your spouse, your child, coming towards you.  They have something to tell you.  So you stop what you are doing and you are 100% focused on them.  You are listening.  Once you understand the situation and realize that it is not an emergency requiring you to stop what you are doing you go back to what you were doing yet you carry on a conversation with the person talking to you.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaSplit into self.  Ellipt into others.  Blend with.

This is something we do in class as Nia teachers.  We might completely concentrate on ourselves.  Waiting to receive a pearl.  Thinking about the moves.  Sensing our body.  Then we might focus on the class.  Giving all our attention to what they are doing and how they are doing it.  Doing a Joy check.  Asking for sounds.  Then our attention could be on both.  We could be receiving information from the class as well as ourselves.  The “Crafting With Attention” is us being aware of the split, ellipt, and blend.  And how we use it.

A few things I have mentioned before, but will repeat again, “other” does not necessarily have to be another person.  You could be splitting, ellipting, and blending with your own body, with the music, with the movements, with many things. And . . . this is just barely a scratch on the surface of the principle.  This is just the broad overview and it is what I understood it to be about.  There is ALWAYS deeper to go in Nia and the Nia principles.  And sometimes the more I do, the more I see it differently.  Sometimes, not always.  So keep that in mind when I post again about The Nia Blue Belt Principle #6: Split, Ellipt, Blend, Crafting With Attention.  (For a list of Nia Blue Belt Principles see Terre’s post The Joy of Being In Relationship With The Nia Blue Belt Principles .

With that quick explanation, can you see how split, ellipt, blend applies to more than just a Nia Teacher teaching a class?  With an awareness of it, can you see how you can use it in different ways?

December 30 Minute Movement Challenge – Day #18

Posted by terrepruitt on December 18, 2012

So today is Tuesday.  On Tuesdays I have a Nia Class at 9:00 am for the City of San Jose.  The community center is closed on Christmas Day.  And I have not heard, but I am thinking it will be closed on New Year’s Day too!  So for two weeks I will not have a Tuesday morning Nia class.  (Sad face.)  But there is class today so I am going to be back to check in after class and after I do my 30 minutes.

Hmmm . . . . maybe I can get the people that are going to miss Nia for two weeks to come over to my Nia Classes on Monday and Wednesday?  Maybe offer a deal?  $5.00 with a community card ID?

Yay you for being here to check in!
