Covering The Camera

Posted by terrepruitt on December 14, 2020

It is a widely known fact that our devices, especially certain applications, listen to us. So, I don’t necessarily trust that my camera is not on when I don’t want it to be. I like to be unable to see that it is able to take pictures. In addition to my phone, I use two devices with cameras, a laptop and a monitor to teach my yoga, Nia, and stretch classes via Zoom. On both the laptop and the monitor I used to have a folded piece of paper taped over the camera. I had assumed there were devices that would block the camera, but I assumed they were “big” and “bulky”. I was thinking that whatever could cover the camera would not allow the laptop to shut properly. But finally when my piece of paper fell off the last time I decided to actually shop – online, of course. And, of course, I found something on Amazon.

So tiny that you could put it on a phone to block that camera. I thought it would work on a laptop and monitor if it worked on a phone. So I ordered a 3 pack for $5.99.

They are so tiny, they work great. I don’t have one on my phone, but I put one on the laptop and the monitor. They can hardly be seen – I had a difficult time taking a picture of it. I love them. It is the peel and stick type of thing. I don’t know how long it will last, but I have an extra one since I only used two. They are cool. It is so much better than having a paper that falls off. As I mentioned the taped paper would fall off often, when I took the paper off and put it somewhere on the monitor so I could use it when I was done, it would fall off. I was constantly “losing” it. This device is just a little slide.

The ones I bought are oval shaped, but they have rectangles. There are even some that have a red dot to indicate something – either open or closed, I don’t remember which, but that sounds like it would be handy. But I only saw the dot on the rectangle kind and I liked the oval ones, they looked smaller.

I know there is one laptop . . . at least there used to be a commercial on TV that showed you could visible cover the camera.  I don’t know if they still make that or if other laptops have that.  My husband has an external camera that has a little piece of plastic that flips over the camera. So . . . with all of these camera covers available I know I am not the only one that likes to visibly cover the camera.

How do you feel? Do you see the need for camera covers?

Enough Stress

Posted by terrepruitt on December 9, 2020

I feel like there is a lot of pressure during the Holidays. I hear so many people exclaim this time of year is so stressful. Just recently I had a conversation with a friend who couldn’t sleep and she noticed that the same thing happens every year. I get it. And this year, this year could be so much worse in terms of amount of stress. There are so many ADDED stressors. We each have our own “regular” Holiday stress and we each have our own stressors that are added because of the world situation, so I am not going to list them because I don’t want to bring up one you may not have thought of! 🙂 You may have seen a few of my posts in the past about how I was trying to reduce the stress during the Holidays. I believe that there are different types of stress. Two examples of types are things we can’t control and the ones we can . . . perhaps even the stressors we cause or add ourselves. I know those were the ones I was trying to reduce. Life is stressful and this year is a doozy so why not try to alleviate some of the ones we can. I was thinking . . . .

Perhaps this year might be the year when your friends and/or family draw names. Instead of the regular everyone-buying-something-for-everyone, maybe just focusing on one person might help relieve some stress. It could also include maybe some conversations and building of relationship with that person. Maybe you get to talk to them to see what the want or what they like. To me, right now, it is precious to speak with people since I am not actually going out and seeing people. Some friends had made comments to me about how difficult shopping is this year because of the situations and restrictions. A lot of people don’t like shopping online . . . they like to be in stores to SHOP and that might not be possible this year. So buying for one person might be the answer to helping lessen the stress.

Seems like the stereo-typical stress of having to be with family is already eliminated, but for some not being able to be with family is causing stress. I know many people might be Zoomed out, but I still think it is still a great way to gather without being there in person. Whatever you regularly do, do that . . . if you dress up, dress up. If you have ugly sweater gatherings, do that. Try to keep the connection with friends and family but keep it as stress free as possible.

Maybe not having the big dinner because it is just going to be the few in your household, so maybe skip a dish or two. Maybe decorating less. Look at what causes you stress — what you can control — and see if you can change the pattern. Whatever you can do to help alleviate stress in this stressful time of year, might be great this year.

I am a big believer that this time of year should be fun and joyful so I think less stress is best.

Also, this is a difficult one for many of us, get enough sleep. It is a fact that it is more difficult to deal with stress when we have not had enough sleep. So work on that. This is a big one for me as I tend to stay up late anyway and turning off my Christmas tree to go to bed is one less day I have to enjoy it so I stay up late.

Also . . . yeah, another one . . . eat good. Avoiding sugar  is something that is really difficult this time of year . . . . although there might actually be less sweets to tempt you this year if you are not going into the office with a break room table full of treats.  Sugar is not a friend to the immune system and right now our immune systems can use all the help they can get.

Stress does not help with sleep nor the immune system so it is somewhat cyclical.

This time of year is stressful. Especially this year with all that we have gone through. We are exhausted, tired, and stressed. Now some of these things are not things that people readily admit soooooo they might not even be identified. This year we’re going through stuff. So think about what you can do to help relieve the stress.

Anything you can cross of your stress-causing list?

Oh, Yin Yoga could help you with stress . . . having a free class Friday, 12.11.20 – info at http://www.helpyouwell.com/

Wrapping The Wall Hangings

Posted by terrepruitt on December 7, 2020

Oh, I am so surprised with myself.  I don’t know how I missed this ALL these years.  I love when restaurants, offices, etc have their wall hangings wrapped.  It looks so festive.  I always marvel at the time it must have taken someone to wrap the hangings.  And yet I have never done it myself.  WHAT?  I don’t get it.  How could I have missed this opportunity all these years?  What a great way to decorate and re-use/recycle wrapping paper.  I just don’t get it.  This year I was looking at my purple and blue plates (don’t match red and green) that are in my plate holder and I was trying to think of something to do with them.  I have Christmas dishes, but we didn’t get them down this year and I am ok with that because we have so many other things to decorate with.  Then it dawned on me . . . I could just wrap the plates.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia online, San Jose Virtual classes, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, Nia Technique, Yin Yoga, stretch classes, online exercise, Zoom classes, virtual yoga, City of San Jose online exercise, live classes via Zoom, Nia White Belt training via ZoomYAY!  Now several things; my hubby let me do something this year he doesn’t normally let me do so I was so excited I didn’t give a lot of thought to wrapping.  I figured we are not buying a lot that needs to be wrapped this year so why have the boxes with the wrapping supplies down in the way.  So I just grabbed some wrapping boxes and the bag of “to be shredded for bagged gifts” paper.  So I didn’t have a lot of paper that would match the bows I hang on the plate holder.  So it is not the best paper, but the idea was that no one would see it.  Ha!  Now you are . . . but oh well.

In case you were wondering what I got to do that was so exciting to me – you are not going to think it is exciting, but I was sooooo happy – I will tell you.  I got to pull stuff out of boxes and then put the boxes back up.  Normally we bring all the boxes in the house and then I empty them and they stay in the house until will put them back up.  And usually we put them all back up at the same time.  So to be able to empty some and not even bring them in the house – such a relief.  The amount of stress that alleviates is amazing.  May sound silly to you, but I was happy.

Anyway . . . this post is me being excited about recycling wrapping paper to decorate and to have a “new” decoration”.  I can change the paper every year.  Well, not really because I often put my Christmas china up there.  But this year . . . . a new decoration!

Well, it is December.  So that means a lot of posts – A LOT – about the Christmas tree (wait till you see the skinny guy we got this year), the decorations, and the season.  Yeah, still celebrating and grasping at the Joy of the Season!

How about you?

And as usual I am getting a later start than I wanted. I was playing around with something on my website and time just slipped by. I even went down to start, but came back up to grab my phone for the recipe and 30 minutes later, I just put the pumpkin in. Then I got to thinking about all the recipes I like to cook this time of year. And I started thinking about all the recipes YOU like to cook this time of year. What are your favorite recipes that you like to cook this time of year?

I am going to list a few of mine here (with links) especially since I still have to try to fix my recipe page after WordPress BLOCKS came along.  (Ugh!)

So, again . . . . what about you?  What are the recipes you look forward to making this season?

Pop-Up Vs Pop-In And A Little Yin Yoga

Posted by terrepruitt on November 19, 2020

Sometimes the day escapes me. I am not going out, but with all of the stuff happening online I am doing a lot of exploring of additional tools to use to make class registration automated, I am doing tests on Zoom for different ways to bring classes to students, I am having to move and rearrange our furniture on a daily basis . . . so a lot of time-consuming stuff. Not complaining, but explaining . . . explaining why I can’t keep up with my own self-imposed posting schedule. I should have posted this yesterday since I am offering a Pop-Up Class tomorrow (Friday, Nov. 20, 2020). This post has a dual purpose, to explain the difference between a Pop-UP and Pop-IN and to expound a bit on Yin Yoga.

POP-UP VS POP-IN

What is a Pop-Up Class? For me, it is a class that is not on my regular schedule. In many cases with many different things a Pop-Up can happen rather quickly – it pops up – but for me, I am usually talking about it a couple days in advance so it is not a quick spur of the moment thing, but it is not a regularly scheduled thing.

Now, the Pop-UP is different than the Pop-In. The pop-in is quick (under 30 minute). So far we have had three pop-ins where we reviewed katas in a song from a Nia routine and then danced the song. It isn’t something where there is the structure of a regular Nia class (or yoga class or stretch class). It is quick – you can just pop-in. I have ideas to do other type of pop-ins maybe a quick stretch or a yoga pose or two, but we will see. A Pop-UP is a class . . . with the actual class structure so popping in and out is not advised.

Yin Yoga has long holds in order to affect the tissue involved. It is not about the muscle but about the connective tissue. Since the connective tissue is not as elastic as muscles it take a bit longer to effect, AT LEAST a minute. When introducing people to Yin Yoga I generally will not hold most poses but for a few seconds over a minute.

In addition to the four Tattvas of Yin Yoga another very important thing to remember is to get out of the poses SLOWLY. In some cases if you feel the pose is too much, it could be just a simple matter of backing off, not getting out of the pose . . . if that doesn’t work and you feel you need to get out of the pose you must do it slowly. When instructing I allow for a transitional period and that could be just as long as the hold. Think of it like when you sit for a long time and how it might not work to jump up, ya gotta ease into standing or repositioning yourself. That is the same with Yin . . . you are in a pose for a long time so it requires a long time to get out of it. If you need to get out of a pose before the instructors instructs the class to do so, do it slowly just as if the instructor is walking you through the transition.

Some of the poses we do in Yin Yoga are similar to the poses in yang yoga. I have probably mentioned how I used to be so frustrated that the Yin Yoga poses had different names then the Hatha yoga poses even though they are “the same” . . . but then I learned they are not the same. Yin Yoga instructors may even use the other name (non Yin) to help you get into the pose, but the intent is different. In yang yoga the focus is stretching and strengthening muscle but in Yin the intent is to affect the connective tissue and move the Qi. But so many people ask about Yin Poses I am going to say here – just to give people an idea – that we do poses similar to pigeon, sphinx, bound angle, and extended child’s pose, to name a few.  Most Yin poses are done on the floor, so it is not as if you are going to be holding a Warrior II for five minutes.

Additionally, as a reminder Yin Yoga is not Restorative Yoga.  Yin may be restorative like all yoga can be restorative, but it is not Restorative Yoga.  Restorative Yoga is about relaxing and involves a lot of lying around.  Yin is not about relaxing although it does require the muscles to relax.

Well, a really good way to see what Yin Yoga is like is to try it.  For details regarding the Pop-Up Yin Yoga Class on Friday, November 20, 2020 please go to my website.  Maybe I will see you there!  (Update 11.28.20:  This class has already occurred, but do check my site because we plan on doing more because they are so FUN!)

Visiting Young Ones

Posted by terrepruitt on November 9, 2020

In June, I believe we had three baby crows that visited our yard. I don’t know for certain because to me young birds (“babies”) look very much like older birds. Actually, young birds often look larger than adult birds, at least in the case of blue jays. From what I have seen in the past the young birds still have their fluff so they sometimes look larger. The fluff isn’t always easy to discern so originally I thought the larger birds were adults. We used to have baby blue jays in our yard every year and watching them it was clear they were not adults. They were so awkward and silly, whereas the adults were very precise. These three birds we had in June were silly. They liked to take bathes — as did all of our blue jay babies in the past. These crows seemed to play and explore, then one by one they were gone.

I had never seen a crow in the bird bath so it was really exciting to see these black beauties hop around and in the bath. They were really gone too soon for my liking.

I know the pictures are not great, sorry, but I took them through screens and windows because the crows would stop their antics when they noticed us watching. In a couple of shots you can see that they noticed me.

Maybe they will remember it was a safe place and they will bring their babies here.

Magnetic Eyeliner And Magnetic Eyelashes Part 2

Posted by terrepruitt on September 28, 2020

I feel that there are plenty of blogs, articles, and vlogs out there showing you how to put the eyelashes on**.  So this is just me sharing a bit about my experience of wearing them and taking them off (and why I am playing with them – Part 1). I mentioned I have only worn them twice, but since then I wore them an additional time so I do want to share a quick observation about putting them on.  The instructions (and several things I have read/seen) say to put the eyelash on when the eyeliner is still tacky – NO, not for me**.  So far I am putting on a thin line (not as thin as I would like/normally wear) but thinner than what I thought would be necessary.  I have not yet applied a second coat . . . so far one coat is working . . . but keep in mind I don’t wear them all day.  I am only popping mine on to wear for a weekly lZoom party.

Another thing, the first time I wore them I didn’t put any mascara on my eyelashes.  The second time I did.  I am going to pretty much stick to NOT putting mascara on my eyelash because part of the reason I wanted these “PUT ONS” was so that I didn’t have to futz with my own eyelashes.  Once I start with the curling and the mascara then I might as well just do that instead of adding the false ones.

Magnetic Eyelashes after 7 hrs coming off but can barely tell

So . . . most of my pictures are of the eyelashes and how they look AFTER the 7 hours (since I wore them again I have additional pictures to show the SHORTEST ones).  The first set of pictures was my birthday party and I didn’t have a chance to get shots right after I put them on and before all of the Lemon Drop Martinis.  🙂  This is after where the inner eye portion of the lash started coming off.  In my opinion it doesn’t even really LOOK that bad.  I just wanted to point it out and let people know that it did start to come off . . . again, it could just be a matter of needing MORE eyeliner or 7 hours being the limit of wear.

Magnetic Eyelashes I’m pointing at the “coming off” – infinity shot

Also . . . (again this was AFTER the party (i.e. Lemon Drop Martinis)) I thought it was really cool how I got the infinity eyelash me going on.  I cannot take a good selfie to save my life so this is all I could manage.  It was really late and I was hoping to get to bed soon, but I wanted to get some shots of my lashes.

Magnetic Eyelashes after 7 hrs coming off, looks ok, feel weird

The pictures are also showing how they come off.  I just peel them off and as you can (hopefully) see, the eyeliner comes off with the magnets.  So the eyeliner looks “dashed” where the magnet “left” it.  Also a picture showing how thick the eyeliner is.

Now . . . you may or may not be able to get a good idea of how long/wide the eyelash is from it being on my eye.

You could look at the specs on the site, but for me, that didn’t really MEAN anything.  So I thought I would show the eyelash in an eyelash curler – granted my eyelash curler is so old that many of you may not have one like that so it may not do you any good . . . but I thought I would try.  I hope this gives you an idea of the length of the lash as it would go across the eye.

Me peeling the Magnetic eyelash off

I did NOT cut them at all.  I think they fit fine.  Of course, someone out there might look and tell me they need to be cut because I am not wearing them correctly, but they feel ok to me.  For a few moments after I put them on, they feel weird, but after a few blinks my eyes get used to them and it is business are usual.

I wear glasses.  I like my glasses pretty close to my eye and these do not rub on the glasses.

When was shopping for the kit I decided I would wear the sparse, but long lashes (those are pictured in first post where I just slapped it on).  Well, it turns out I like the REALLY LONG THICK lashes.  The ones I think are RIDICULOUS.  They are so fun.  Also, I thought I would never wear the shortest ones, but on this last wear (the third time) I did.

Hopefully you can see how the eyelash peeled off the eyeliner

Also, there is a picture of the ingredients in the eyeliner.  If you know the difference between this and “regular” eyeliner, please let us know.

Ha! Lovely – trying to highlight the “dashed” effect of peeling off eyelashes

I know these two posts about false eyelashes have been really long, but I just wanted to share because I think they are super fun.  And, to me, especially right now, if you can add a little fun into your life then — why not?  I hope these posts have given you some insight into magnetic eyelashes . . . . for those of you that are interested.  I also know that there are a lot of pictures.  🙂 I was really trying to show what was going on with the eyelashes and I am not good at getting good selfies.  I rather like the infinity effect!

Showing the eyeliner, the lash (these are the BIG ones), and the dashed eyeliner

*from Magnetic Eyeliner And Magnetic Eyelashes Part 1 post, explanation of socialization:

I am very fortunate that I teach yoga, Nia, and stretch online – via Zoom – my students are awesome and we visit after class.  So I DO get to socialize a bit that way, BUT . . . I am wearing my workout clothes and I don’t wear makeup aside from a little bit of eyeliner which ends up all smudged.  So when I say “ONLY socialization that we do where I can wear regular clothes and put on makeup” or “the only “regular” socialization” that is what I mean.

**from post above; I put the eyelash on while the liner was still tacky and I do not like that.  I felt that instead of the magnet sticking to the magnetic aspect of the eyeliner the eyelash/magnet got stuck in the tackiness of the eyeliner and it was icky.

ONE TIP, I did read somewhere . . . and I thought it was a GREAT idea for those that do wings with their eyeliner:  DON’T WASTE THE MAGNETIC EYELINER ON THE WING.  Save the magnetic stuff for your actual lash line where the eyelash is going to be.  Use your regular eyeliner for your flick.  I thought that was a great idea, since I think the magnetic eyeliner can be expensive.

So . . . . are ready to talk more about magnetic eyelashes?  Are you ready to get some?

Magnetic Eyeliner And Magnetic Eyelashes Part 1

Posted by terrepruitt on September 23, 2020

Ohmyword! I can make my eyelashes pretty long. Curling them and putting mascara on. But I have very few eye lashes. I always have had sparse eyelashes. At a couple of points in my life I’ve worn fake eyelashes to fill in “bald” spots in my lash line, first one eye then the other. I have very deep set eyes so I think eyelashes help bring them out a little bit. So I really like to have eyelashes. I remember buying a full set with glitter on them thinking it would be fun to wear them when I dressed up for an anniversary. But I didn’t take into account the glitter falling off into my eyes. I remember contacts and glitter don’t mix, but I don’t remember if I wore them through the night or took them off or what . . . maybe as I was getting ready I realized it and didn’t wear them . . . I don’t know. As time goes on my eyes are even more hooded than they used to be and my eyelashes even more sparse.  I know there are some amazing mascaras out there that can plump, lengthen, and multiply your eyelashes, but I have not invested in them. I rarely wear makeup so it is impossible for me to spend more than $7.00 on a tube of mascara because I might only get five uses out of it because it dries up and gets clumpy so fast. If I were wearing makeup every day that would be a different story, since I am not, it is just not worth spending more. Those magnetic eyelashes had intrigued me. The ones that are a top and a bottom (think sandwich) and you put your real lashes in between them. But those are always REALLY big and thick and it doesn’t seem like my poor little eyelashes would do well smooshed between a set of eyelashes so I never got any of those. But you may be aware, nowadays they have magnetic eyeliner that attracts the magnetic eyelashes. So you can actually just wear one line of eyelashes instead of two like sandwich bread. I decided to treat myself to some for my birthday.

We have some friends that we Zoom with every week and since it is the ONLY socialization that we do where I can wear regular clothes and put on makeup*, I do. But on camera my puny little eyelashes look even less “there” and sometimes it is so hot by the time the meeting has started the curl (and length) has completely fallen out of my eyelashes and I am back to looking like I have no eyelashes. Now, mind you, the couple that we Zoom with COULD NOT careless, neither could my husband (bless all of their hearts), it is just me. I like to have it LOOK like I put on makeup when I actually put on makeup. And, this is seriously the only “regular” socialization that we do. So . . . I decided a little treat would be fun.

Now, since I started thinking about getting the magnetic eyelashes I have been inundated with ads on Facebook. There were two companies that were showing up, once I actually did a search I received ads from many more companies. There are a lot of companies that sell lashes. I was looking for a lash with five magnets because I was under the impression that the lashes are long and I would have to cut them to fit my eye so I didn’t want a three magnet lash and end up cutting one off. I was also looking for something REALLY affordable because I didn’t want to spend a lot of money when I wasn’t even sure I was going to like them or if they would work. And then I started thinking I wanted some that came in a set with more than one pair because it would be fun to have REALLY big crazy ones. I would always look at the lashes and choose the less long length and “sparse” ones (those terms are relative). I had just wanted to add to mine not take them over.  (Spoiler alert:  THAT CHANGED!)

I ordered some and they arrived a day earlier then I was told. I was so excited, I ripped them out of the box ready to slap ’em on to see what they were like. Then I thought, “Ugh. I better read the directions.” So I did, the directions say to do an “allergy test”. That sounded like a great idea. But it didn’t say WHAT that was. The internet said to put the eyeliner behind your ear or something. And to wait 24 hours. Well, yeah . . . no. I am not that patient. So I shook the eyeliner bottle (I followed that instruction at least) and applied a thin line of one layer on my eyelid. Then I put the eyelash up to my eyelid and “schloop!” it stuck. It’s cool. It’s fun. That first time I didn’t do it close enough to my nose. I also didn’t do the second eye because if I was allergic I didn’t need BOTH eyes swollen and/or crusty.

I got the set on Amazon for $15.29 since then the price went down to $14.99. They are FAKE eyelashes, as in, they are not real hair/fur. The kit comes with four pair of eyelashes (in little round cases), magnetic eyeliner, and a METAL pair of tweezers. I don’t understand the metal tweezers because the second time (the time I was going to actually wear the eyelashes) I picked the eyelash up with the tweezers and it stuck to it. No! I don’t want it sticking then it won’t attract nicely to my eye!  So I just use my fingers to put the lashes on.

The eyeliner is like a coating. So when I take the eyelashes off the liner sticks to the eyelash/magnet and peels it off my eye. I can scratch/peel the rest off of my eye if I want or just use make up remover.  I use makeup remover.

I don’t want a THICK line of eyeliner so I do it as thin as possible and I only do one coat. I don’t wear them for a long time. The first time it was about 3.5 to 4 hours and they made it pretty well. This last time (only the second time) they started to come off on the inside. Again, I might have needed more eyeliner or they just might have been at their time limit – it was about 7 hours.

UGH – post is so long . . . tune in for part 2.

Hawk On The Bath

I took the pictures and videos with the intent of posting about it. Well, three years later here ya go. I noticed him then watched him for about 10 minutes. It was odd. Hawks are very big birds and the funny thing is this is a small hawk. This guy had upset the blue jays. You can hear them in the videos squawking. It took our cats a bit to notice. I believe when I wasn’t recording the bird I was talking to my cats trying to get them to notice. I didn’t want to get up because I didn’t want to disturb the bird. The birdbath is not that far away and often times we frighten birds off of it by moving to get a better look. I didn’t want to move. I was in awe.

The pictures and the videos are not great. I was using my iPhone 5. But, to me, they are still cool. I have two videos of Teagan that me laugh because they remind me that she was walking toward the window then saw the bird and froze. I have never seen her so still. She was in midstride and STOPPED, her head low, and she just froze with only her tail moving back and forth. She was like that for at least 5 mins. I didn’t post them because I was laughing and talking while filming and the best I can figure is I had my fingers over the mic and then I moved them and the sound is too inconsistent and annoying. Plus it is just a recording of a cat standing completely still, I do pan over to the bird who seems to be watching the cat, but only the mom (or dad) wants to watch a (their) cat standing still for a minute and a half.

The hawk doesn’t do anything, but move his head, drink some water, and fluffy up a bit. I just wanted to say that so you weren’t disappointed if you watch the videos. And . . . I am not best videographer and I can bet you that I was trying to move while not moving a lot to get closer so they are not the smoothest of recordings. They, along with the pictures are just to document that THERE WAS A HAWK IN OUR YARD!

I believe this is a Cooper’s hawk. As he was large, but not very large.

It was cool. This is the second time I’ve seen a hawk in our yard.

You can barely see Teagan (welcome to our world) in front of the tube.
