Compliments Over My Head

Posted by terrepruitt on February 21, 2015

I think I am very correct in saying that Group Exercise Instructors and Nia teachers love to hear students ask, “Where else do you teach?” and “What else do you teach?”  Isn’t that the greatest thing?  It is such a huge compliment.  The student is asking where else can they get more of you.  The student is asking in what other ways can they get more of you.  I had never thought of that as a compliment.  I had never even realized it was a compliment.  When I was asked that, I used to feel bad because I didn’t teach anything else other than Nia.  I also felt bad when I just taught at one place.  I was always so focused on not being able to meet their additional needs I didn’t “hear” the compliment.  I didn’t hear the un-spoken, “You met my need here.”  Last year, I actually was in a required continued education class instructed by the YMCA when the teacher mentioned that if a student asks you those questions it is a compliment.  Ha.  Silly I had never thought of it as a compliment.  I was focused on something else entirely.  It strikes me as funny when I go into a situation to learn one thing and something totally different is taught to me.  I was taught to see it as a compliment.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoNowadays, I am not so focused on not being able to meet their need for an additional class or another venue, because I am teaching six classes at four different places.  Although people still would like an evening Nia class.  This schedule can change at anytime, but for now, at least, I feel more varied.

Do you ever go into a situation expecting to learn one thing and come out surprised at what you learned?  I like when I can learn what I was expecting AND something I wasn’t expecting.  That always makes me feel happy.  I feel like I got a bingo or hit the lotto.  A two-for-one kind of thing.  A real deal.  Something completely worth my time.  Ya know?

Do you ever miss a compliment?  Are you ever so focused on something else you don’t even realize the person talking to you / asking a question is really in a sense giving you a compliment?  Sometimes it is kind of nice because later on it might hit you and bring a smile to your face, but then I feel bad I didn’t take the opportunity to show gratitude.  But sometimes that happens.

For a second I thought of listening with love, but I don’t think this is the same as that.  But perhaps.  Maybe if I had been listening with love instead of feeling bad I could help I would have noticed it was a compliment.  But then I would have been so excited about the class I had to take.  I wouldn’t have gotten that “extra” bang for my buck.  Ha, ha!

This same type of compliment would be said to a performer, “Where else do you perform?”  “What else have you performed in?”  Yeah, that is a compliment all right.

So how about it?  Have you ever experienced any unexpected learning?  Have you ever totally “missed” that someone was complimenting you?  What other situations would that type of comment fit?

A Quick Bit About The Brain

Posted by terrepruitt on February 17, 2015

“What is Alzheimer’s Disease?  Alzheimer’s is a slow fatal disease of the brain affecting one in ten people over the age of 65.  No one is immune.  The disease comes on gradually as two abnormal protein fragments called Plaques and Tangles accumulate in the brain and kill brain cells.”  Then the video goes on to say WHERE in the brain those fragments start and WHAT is in that part of the brain.  The first place is the middle of the bottom part of the brain the place where memories are formed.  The video states that as the disease progresses it becomes harder and harder to form new memories.  Then the disease spreads to the language processing portion of the brain.  Then, Alzheimer’s goes to area of the brain in the front where logical thought takes place.  Problem solving, grasping concepts and making plans are some of the things affected.  This video goes on to show the way the disease progresses.  It somewhat helps explains things like why a person who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease can remember things from years ago, but not decide what to wear today or what to eat for a meal.  It is a less-than-four-minute video that explains a little bit about how the brain is affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.

The video is about five years old and is from www.AboutAlz.org, but I just saw it posted on Facebook this past weekend.  I thought it was very informative and I wanted to share it.  It quickly and basically explains the progression of the disease.  It states that “the progression from mild forgetting until death is slow and steady and takes place over an average of eight to ten years.”

I was wondering if those numbers have changed since it has been almost five years.  So I clicked on “Statistics About Alzheimer’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Association” under “Alzheimer’s Resources”.  There is a lot of information on that page, like:

“An estimated 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease in 2014, including approximately 200,000 individuals younger than age 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer’s.” The Alzheimer’s Association site also states: “Alzheimer’s is officially the 6th leading cause of death in the United States” and “It kills more than prostate cancer and breast cancer combined.”  This site also has a “brain tour” which has seven “pages” of basic brain information.  It has nine “pages” of “Alzheimer’s Disease and the Brain”.  It shows that the brain actually shrinks as it is attacked by the proteins.

I didn’t actually look to see if the progression has been slowed . . . as usual, I clicked a link and got distracted.  But, I think this is enough information for now.

I just thought this video was interesting.  I am sure there are more detailed videos out there, but sometimes quick and simple is nice.  Usually I can spot David Hyde Pierce’s voice in a second.  The first time I saw this I was surprised that he was the one narrating it.  It got me the second time too!  He is a spokesperson for the Alzheimer’s Association.

I like to share the things I think are interesting.  Plus . . . I like to put it on my blog so I know where to find it when I want to see the information again.  I hope this helped teach you a bit about something you might not have known about.  I would imagine if you know someone – especially if you are taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s you know this information.  So, like I said, I hope you learned something.

Please share any information, insight, stories . . . . .

Today I was lucky enough to share it with many of my loves. We enjoyed a relaxing day and a wonderful dinner. I hope you have people in your life you feel it for. I hope you have people in your life you say it to often. I hope many people say it to you often. Feel it, say it, show it, enjoy it. It is wonderful. You are lucky if you have it.

This weekend is my parents’ 50th wedding anniversary. Congratulations.

Anyone can be your Valentine. Did you have a nice day?

Dinner Helper

Posted by terrepruitt on January 27, 2015

I have mentioned that my husband and I have purchased a portion of a cow.  My friend that has done all the work in regards to researching grass-fed beef and the procurement of the cow is a chef. When we talk about the beef – she forgets she no longer has to “sell” me on it – she says it is so nice to know she has meat in the freezer for dinner and she loves that she doesn’t have to go to the store for dinner. I am unfamiliar with that feeling because 1) I primarily cook what I have. Unlike her I just look at what I have, then I decide what to cook. It is not often I think, “Oh I want this (this, specific thing that requires specific meat) today” and go about making it. But such is the creative life of a talented chef (my friend). 2) I forget to take it out to defrost. THAT is my problem. I forget to take the meat out. I don’t always wake up thinking, “What should I make for dinner?” And even when or if I do, by the time I get out of bed and make my way downstairs, I forget to go directly to the freezer to take out for defrosting, whatever I was thinking I could make for dinner. My friend suggested a method that works and speeds up the process.

As we were talking I shared with her my preferred method and she did not like it. She expressed concern over the safety of it, but it works for me except when I forget to take whatever I am defrosting out of the oven before I turn it on.  I usually think of taking something out of the freezer to thaw after my Nia classes, in the middle of any work I am doing . . . so about 2:00 or 3:00 pm.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoIn her infinite knowledge my friend told me to put the meat on metal. I am sure many of you know that and might even employ the method. I know that metal conducts cold but I never thought about it defrosting meat.

It works VERY well. I can take some meat out in the afternoon and cook it in the evening. That same evening. One thing I do, is I switch metal. So if I need it to defrost faster I switch the metal the meat is on.  So I put the meat on a metal pan, then when the pan is cold, I switch to a new pan.  Works fast. I have not tried BIG cuts of meat, because a big cut takes more planning to cook for me than taking it out in the afternoon for cooking that same evening. I bet it would work, but take a long time. I am sure it will help make the process happen faster, but not as fast as I need.

So, I understand that this might not be new to a lot of people, but I thought I would share for those that hadn’t thought about it. This has made my life a lot easier. I hope that it can help ease your dinner “pain” and make your life easier.

Did you know about the metal method? How do you defrost your meat?

Revisiting Old Post – Actually Having To Repost

Posted by terrepruitt on January 24, 2015

I am looking through my drafts in WordPress to see if there is anything I started to write that I can finish up and use as a post.  I went to a Nia class this morning and spent the day visiting with a friend, so I am trying to post at the last minute (again).  I am very confused it is showing I have 26 drafts.  That seems like an awful lot because I don’t type my posts in the WordPress editor.  I typed them in Notepad.  Sometimes I type them in the WordPress editor, but not often.  I am confused because I also take copies of my posts after I post them and I am seeing copies of the post in my folder and I am seeing comments on them.  But they are showing as drafts.  WordPress has been changing so much with the admin portion of the site I am surprised crazy stuff doesn’t happen all the time.  As things grow often times the simplicity of things get taken away and now what was one click to the admin page I have to click at least four things to get to where I am going.  “Improvements” is a word they should use loosely.  So I discovered the weirdest things while looking in my drafts.  So far, I have discovered two posts that had been posted in August 2013 that are now showing in draft and are no longer on the calendar.  One had 14 comments on it, so I know that it was posted at one time.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoSo I thought I would point them out in case they really weren’t posted in the first place.  Which would mean that saminaiqbal27 of Samina’s Forum for police support never had that conversation.  The first one I discovered I reposted as of the date of the original post.  In the admin screen it had showed that there were six likes.  When I reposted it they reappeared so hopefully Samina’s and my conversation will come back.  (It did!)

The first post that I discovered was no longer on the blog was posted on Tuesday, August 13, 2013.  It was a silly post about a silly subject.  It was one of the things I hesitated posted about because it was so silly.  But I remember now that at the time I was really appreciating my husband helping out with the cat’s liter box and I thought it was funny that he was making it funny.  But then as time went on it turned out to be a really good thing.  The post that was gone and is now back is S For Spa, Serene, Spot.

For A Taller You was the second post that was showing in drafts and NOT on my blog, but now it is back, with comments and all.  Strange.

I just found another one, I Smell Something.  Unfortunately I thought I had seen it on the blog still so I deleted the one that was showing up in the drafts, but it turns out that was the one that had been posted.  Good thing I keep copies of all my posts.  I just copied and pasted it into a new post, but with the original post date.  But any likes were lost.  I hesitated reposting this one because that diffuser died shortly after.  They kindly offered to send me a replacement.  And they did.  It lasted for about 5 minutes.  I gave up on that.

Well, at this time, it is late and I want to go visit with my hubby so I will go through all the “drafts” at a later time . . . because I have nothing else to do . . . I’ll probably share again if any others have become drafts.  So weird.

Any of you on WordPress having weird stuff happen?  If you have a different blog platform do you like it?

Goings-On

Posted by terrepruitt on January 22, 2015

What is going on with you? Here? Me? Well, I mentioned that Nia released four new routines at the end of the year. I mentioned I ordered three. Well, I received them and I listened to the music for the one I had planned to learn first and just as I expected. The music for the entire routine is from ONE artist. When I originally noticed that, I thought that might be an issue for me. I thought that it would all sound the same and I wasn’t too excited about that prospect. But the music from the routine I didn’t order was even less appealing. Now, let me explain that we are able to listen to snippets of the songs. Like on iTunes. It only plays for a moment. As you may have found out from listening to snippets on iTunes some times what you hear is not exactly what you get. I mean sometimes a song can change dramatically. The Nia website used to allow us to listen to the entire song, but now we only get a short preview. So . . . having listened to the previews of all the songs for all the routines, I “didn’t like” the music of one routine. That is why I didn’t order it. But I was leery of the “One artist” routine. But the snippets sounded different enough, I thought it would be ok. Turns out . . . not so much. But . . . often times the first “listen through” of a routine’s music reveals an instant “I don’t like”, but that fades or disappears entirely sometimes. So, I have faith it will be fine, but . . . it caused me to decide to work on learning a different routine. So I am in the process of learning a new routine.

I always look at them for the first time and think, “Oh cool. That’s not too hard. I can learn it quick.” But then . . . for me that is not the case. It is one thing to be able to dance to a routine, but it is another to be able to lead it. I could just take it to class and we could play with it, but I like to have a really good handle on it first.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoBut . . . . somewhat exciting news . . . as is always happening at places that have exercise classes, it seems as if there is going to be a change in the schedule at one of the facilities where I teach. So they are looking to fill a spot, but they don’t really think they want another cardio class, but . . . . I know that it takes time to find the right class and a teacher that can do it, so I offered to do Nia in the meantime. Well, much to my surprise the supervisor took me up on that deal. As in starting next week. The odd thing is – I was already set to sub the class one day, so it is basically like I am taking it over tomorrow.

Another exciting thing is the response I have received from the Nia students that currently attend the other classes I teach. They are excited to have an additional Nia class. Many of them said they would take the class. So . . . we will see. I am secretly –ok, so it is not a secret (!!) hoping that the class will do well and the center will let me keep it. With Group Ex classes we know that nothing is permanent because things sometimes need to change, but there is the “permanent” and we like that. So it could be that I end up taking routines into the classroom sooner than normal if I get to teach four classes a week, regularly!

I am going to go be a student on Saturday. One of the Nia students that used to attend my classes moved to a different area. I am going to visit her. We are going to go to a Nia class she now regularly attends. I think being a student will be a great energizer. I don’t take the time out to be a student as much as I would like. Seems like I am always trying to learn a routine so I don’t take time out from that. But this was planned in advance and it will be perfect.

My hubby and I are still adding to our Goodie Jar. It is looking quite festive with all of the Christmas wrapping paper scraps we are using.

Did I mentioned the Nia Events I have on the calendar for March? There is going to be a Friday evening class and a Saturday playshop? The evening class will be a routine done to 80’s music and the playshop is all about Free Dance. The Nia Teacher that is going to do both is Jason Alan Griffin. I wrote a post about him, First Degree Nia Black Belt Guest Teacher because he brought his Goldfinger routine to the East Bay Area last year.

Whew!  So that is what is up with me.  Do tell, what is up with you?

What You See Is Your Perception

Posted by terrepruitt on January 17, 2015

Perception.  Such an odd thing.  I remember when I was 15 years old and working in an office with some young women.  They were probably in their 20s so really still young.  I remember all the stories they would tell me and how they would carry on like 20-somethings do.  Then one day a child walked in and the woman I knew to be a young person who enjoyed to go out and have a good time became a mom.  It was the weirdest thing.  I am not saying this woman was a party animal, but it was just odd to see this woman go from working woman to working mom.  Since she didn’t really talk about her kid all that much it was easy to forget that she was a mom.  I am not saying she didn’t talk about her kid because she didn’t love her child or because she didn’t care.  She talked to me more about things that a 15 year old is involved in or going through; relationships, school, and being young . . . . not kids.  The group conversations in the office tended to be around other things since not everyone had kids.  Also, there was seeing a tough boss lady with her spouse.  Seeing the loving side of a meany.  Seeing different sides.  I didn’t know the woman as a mother, so it was odd to see her acting like one.  I didn’t know the gruff boss lady as a wife so it was odd to see her act like one.   Friends also might have different perceptions than family members because they’ve seen different things and experienced different things.  Also new friends and old friends.  Sometimes people modify their behaviors, mature, or just change so people who are just meeting someone for the first time might not have any idea of how it used to be.  So the perception of the person is different for the new person than for the person that has been around.  What you know to be true from your experience, can be different from what someone else knows because they have had different experiences.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoSo amazing how that is. It is amazing how everyone’s perception can be different.  Our perception has a lot to do with ourselves.  Someone who has been cheated on by a significant other might take “I’m working late,”  completely different from someone who has never had that mistrust thrust upon them.

This is all just talking about people.  What about “things”?  Like viewing clouds or art.  Two people look up in the sky, one person sees a dinosaur and the other a horse.  And even if both people were to look up and see a horse it would probably still be different types of horses.  As I was contemplating the “people” aspect it occurred to me that recently I had been thinking about perception in regards to Nia.  I always say it is a practice like yoga, and for those people who think of yoga as a religion, I am wondering now if they think I mean that Nia is a religion.  A recent conversation made me think so.  Even though I was hoping I was explaining it well when I say that you can take some of the ideals and principles of Nia out into the world just like you do with yoga.  I guess that could sound like a religion – especially if you think of yoga as a religion.  Yoga being a religion is also a funny thing, because some people say it is and some people say it isn’t.  I was hoping to get a regular Nia class going at a yoga studio a long time ago and I said something about “some people believe it is a religion” to the owner of the studio, she got very upset saying that was not true.  Well, it is VERY true some people DO think it is a religion.  I never got a class there.

I think of Nia as an exercise program with a holistic twist.  Just like yoga.  But yoga can be taken to the point of being a religion, but not everyone that does yoga considers it a religion.  I actually don’t know anyone that teaches Nia who considers it a religion.  But the more I think about it, the more I can see how some people could think of it that way.  Perhaps comparable somehow to the people who have been cheated on.  If they think of everything as being in competition with their own religion maybe anything outside of it that you practice would be considered a religion to them.  I don’t know . . . that is one of the things I have been thinking about when thinking about how people see things.  Perception is weird.  The ol’ “glass half full, glass half empty” thing.

Do you ever experience the differences in perception?  With people you know that your friends know?  With co-workers?  With family?  How do you experience it?

How Are Your Resolutions Going?

Posted by terrepruitt on January 13, 2015

We are almost half way through the first month of the year. So it might be a little late for me to be talking about resolutions, but I was wondering about them. I was wondering about yours. Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? If so how are you doing on them or with them? I know there are different types of resolutions. There are those that are long term so thirteen days in to the New Year you might not have any progress on them. Some, though, might be the ones you’ve resolved to do daily or that you would have progress on or with just shortly into the New Year. How are you doing on them? What are they? I don’t make resolutions so I have nothing to report, but I was wondering about you. I was wondering if you would like to share the status of your resolutions.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoIf I were the type to make resolutions, I would have made one that had to do with getting my stuff straightened up and out a bit. I was planning on cleaning out some stuff last year but then my mom died and I ended up with a lot of her stuff. I’m a bit of a hoarder with some thing so it is not easy for me to just get rid of stuff. But doing so, getting rid of stuff is always on my mind. To me, since it is always on my mind and it is a constant thing that needs to be done, I don’t think of it as a New Year’s Resolution.

Things often seem to get in the way of me doing any kind of cleaning out. Not easy to get going on sorting out when other things “come up” since I would rather be doing just about anything, but cleaning out closets. One thing that has come up – I am hosting a special Nia Class and Nia Playshop. Granted these events are going to be in March. There is still a lot to be done in the beginning. It takes time to work out the details and secure the venue. I would much rather be creating flyers and other marketing material than going through stuff and deciding what to get rid of. I will eventually have information on my site about the Nia Events, but for now I will say one will be a Nia Class done to 80s music and the playshop is going to be a Nia Free Dance Playshop! Mark your calendars for Friday, March 27, 2015 and Saturday, March 28, 2015.

See, I get distracted by new and exciting things. Regardless of whether you make resolutions or not, I do hope your 2015 is starting out wonderful and continues on the path of being a spectacular year.  I hope that you succeed in your goals, if you are the type to make them.

What about New Year’s Resolutions? Do you make them? How are you doing with them? Do you get distracted from you resolutions?

A Perfect Gift

Posted by terrepruitt on January 10, 2015

You might have read my post Homemade Soapy Goodness back in August. I wrote about this yummy soap that I had been buying for a couple of years.  It was really nice soap.  It had essential oils in it and smell great.  It wasn’t cheap, but I considered it one of the splurges I like to as for as a Christmas gift from my hubby.  Well, this year I was counting on him being able to get it for me for Christmas, but when I went to there was nothing there.   I thought she went out of business since there was no product on her website, her Etsy shop was gone, and the e-mail I sent her was returned to me.  There was no notification of discontinuing business or anything.  I’m always a little disappointed when people don’t leave any “out of business” information or a notice as to what is going on.  I know things happen, but when you have a business, I just expect a little information to be dispensed for customers.  Oh well.  It so happened though, I received soap as a Christmas gift.  I actually received two different soaps.  One I have not yet tried, but it smells really good (you’ll probably read about that in a later post).  The other one I received smelled even better so I jumped on the internet to see if I could buy it on Amazon.  And I can.  And I did and it is awesome.  It is my new soap.  It is Verbena Flower scent.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoIt is very nice feeling soap and even better smelling.  I showed it to my niece when she was here and she couldn’t stop smelling it.  It smells terrific.  It lathers up nice and it leaves me feeling clean.  I don’t like it when I feel like I have a layer of something left on me.

Since I couldn’t get soap from my favorite place — I was lucky to get this soap for Christmas.  I purchased addition bars from French Presents through Amazon.com.

I am just noticing that I purchased Verbena Flower and the one I had received is Verbena.  They smell the same, but I guess they are different.  When I was ordering I hadn’t noticed that there was a Verbena, I thought they had just changed the name from Verbena to Verbena Flower, but now I am seeing they are two different things.  Either way, they smell great and I am happy to have been handed a new soap to love.

I’ve spent a good portion of the last few days “undecorating”.  I’ve only been able to spend a few hours each day on it so it seems to be taking a very long time.  My husband and I spent at least four hours today and it is pretty much packed up.  He is helping me do the part I don’t like and that is putting all the boxes back in the big boxes.  It just baffles me how the small ornament boxes can come out of one box, but when I go to put them back in they don’t fit.  I get frustrated so my husband comes to my rescue.  Not all the ornaments have a box so it makes the process a bit annoying.  I need to work on getting things more organized so it is not as frustrating and therefore less stressful upon putting things away.  I am so grateful my husbands help.

I have been wanting to post about my “soap lady” since I went on and on about her.**  And I wanted to share about my new yummy soap, today seems like the perfect time since I am just able to get up to my computer now.

Seems like more people than I am used to are taking their time this year with taking their decorations down.  I have more friends say they are just starting or just getting done.  How is your “undecorating” going?  Are you done?  And just out of curiosity, what is your favorite soap?

**I just check on my “soap lady” and she might be back in business, but I don’t see my regular package that I used buy and I like this other soap I am buying.  Maybe she took the Holidays off.  Perhaps is she is in business at Christmastime I will ask for soap from her for Christmas.

As A Matter Of Policy – Don’t Allow Resentfulness

Posted by terrepruitt on January 8, 2015

Years back I created policies for the classes I teach. There are always different people and different circumstances, so it is important to have polices in place. So, I had these policies in place, but, like I said – people, circumstances – so once when I encountered “people – circumstances” I allowed something against my policy. Then I was upset. I thought about it for days. I was sad, I was mad, I was annoyed. I was upset. I was upset that this person asked me to break my policy. I was upset that I allowed it. I was upset that I took time to think long and hard about my policies and that I took the time, the effort, and the money to print and post disclosure of said polices. I was upset because when someone attends my Nia class at the studio I rent they sign a sign-in sheet stating they agree to the policies. I was upset that I felt unfair to everyone else that complies to the policy and doesn’t even ask to break the policy. I was so grumpy. I resented the entire situation — FOR DAYS! Then I realized, I let it happen. In trying to be nice and allowing the person to break my policy I ended up being REALLY upset. I created something I didn’t enforce. When I do something nice I love the feeling it gives me. I feel nice. I feel as if I am spreading joy. And this nice thing I did, did not make me feel nice. It made me feel stupid. I put all this effort into polices and then I just disregarded them. I learned my lesson. There are polices for a reason. Recently I enforced my polices and I found myself wanting validation. So in sharing my story with a friend she told me, “Don’t resent what you allow.”

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoSee? That is what I figured out long ago. I was so resentful that I allowed a break in policy. I realized that in order to not be resentful I have to stick to my policy. So when I shared with a friend the fact that I just stuck to my polices because I hadn’t once before then I was upset, she said it in this succinct way and told me the story of how she learned it and who told her. She said her friend had told her this when she was having an issue with something she allowed to happen.

Obviously you CAN resent something you allow, but the idea is to avoid that. If you are going to resent it, don’t allow it. So even though I didn’t say it that way, I learned it. I was visiting with a different friend today and we happened upon this same subject. We shared some stories. I was not certain about posting this but then when the subject came up again today, on the day I need to post, I decided it was serendipity.

One huge part in helping me stick to my policies is fairness. If one person asks for an exception and I allow it, then when that same situation happens with someone else in order to be fair I would need to pass on the same exception. But that is not a wise business practice. Policies are made for a reason. In the case of class passes there are multiple reasons. When a class pass is purchased in advance it helps the teacher with business expenses, like licensing, insurance, and rental fees. But first and foremost is it supposed to help motivate the student to attend class. The idea is “you already paid for it, you might as well go to class.” It is encouragement to stick to your fitness routine. So often times, having the policies broken cheats you, too. Because why do you need to go to class to use the pass before it will expire if you know that the expiration will just be extended?

When policies are in place and they are clearly disclosed everyone feels better because they know what is expected.

So that is my story with “Don’t resent what you allow.” Even though I learned the saying AFTER I learned the lesson, I still like it.

What about you? Do you know what I am talking about? Do you resent some things you allow? Is there some changes that you could – would like to – make, in order to be less resentful?
