Stressing Not Stretching

Posted by terrepruitt on January 20, 2020

I teach a stretch class. In that class we do static stretches that are meant to stretch our muscles. Sometimes to get people into the stretch I use the name of a yoga pose, but because we are stretching our intent is different. If we were actually in yoga doing the pose we would be including breathing and strengthening, but in the stretch class I try to just make it about stretching the muscles. I may have mentioned before, when I started learning Yin Yoga I was frustrated because the names of the poses were different. I kept saying, “Why are the names different? They are the same poses?” Then I realized that the intent of the pose is different. So it really does serve the student better to call it something different. If I were to instruct students to move into Bound Angle, then people that know this pose would pull their feet in as close as they could pressing their knees towards the earth and lengthening the spine, but in Yin calling it butterfly lets them know that they are not doing the same thing as they would be in a yang class. There is no need to pull the feet in as close to the middle as you can get them and press the knees down, the idea is to soften and round, the head and knees hang resting where they are to help the connective tissue stress (FKA stretch). So the names are different to help remind us that the intent is different. We are not working (stretching, strengthening, moving) muscles; we are relaxing muscles and letting our bodies hang into a pose. In Yin Yoga we are not stretching we are stressing.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaI often use the same description – stretch – when I am teaching Yin yoga, although that is not the intent. First of all we are focusing on connective tissue and not the muscles, but we still are not trying to STRETCH the tissue. That is what we say, but that it not really what we are doing. Saying we are stretching it does sound better than what we are doing. We are actually stressing it. It seems as if we have been programmed to think that stretching and lengthening are good so that is usually how we describe it. Even when someone goes to the gym they say they are going to “build muscles,” people don’t say they are going to the gym to “break down their muscles” – even though that is actually what they are doing. It is the breaking down of the fibers and the stressing of the fibers that we are actually doing. Then when we rest they build up again or in the case of fascia, return to its normal state stronger and changed for the better.

It is such a habit to say “stretch”. “In Yin Yoga we stretch our connective tissue.” I think I say it because it sounds a little better than stressing. I also keep saying lengthen because it sounds like a goal people want to hear. I think that for many of the people I have encountered stretching and lengthening are goals. Connective tissues doesn’t really stretch out, it gets stressed which helps hydrate it and strengthen it and allow it to move and support us better.

I also feel like some of this is in part due to the fact that many people think of Yin Yoga as Restorative Yoga. Restorative Yoga is more of a relaxing muscle stretching type of yoga. It can help heal the body. There are many props used to allow the participant to lie there in comfort. Yin Yoga is not about comfort. It about stressing that connective tissue which can make the part of the body feel like it aged years over the few minutes you were in the pose. But as long as it is not PAIN or tingling or numbing that is being felt it sounds as if you are doing it right.

In order for the yin pose to be effective it needs to be done for a long time. I was taught that it has to be AT LEAST one minute. But I see some information say it must be longer, but I have also been taught that for many people and for many poses we need to start at one minute because even that is going to feel like an eternity. As the body becomes accustomed to long holds then the time spent in each pose can be longer. I believe the ideal time is from three to five minutes . . . but it also depends on the pose.

Just like with all yoga it is important to listen to the body and not try to compete, the idea is to play the edge yet know when you must stop. Again, we are STRESSING the tissue but we don’t want to stress it past its breaking point. We still must be mindful.

Marmalade Chicken

Posted by terrepruitt on January 15, 2020

I received some yummy sounding marmalade for Christmas. It was Meyer lemon and ginger marmalade. Immediately I thought of chicken. Would most people think toast? I thought of chicken. Like when I put persimmons on chicken or pork. That is what I thought of. It was perfect because I had been wondering what to cook for dinner that day and when I opened the gift I knew. I went to the store and bought some chicken breasts and had a dinner plan.

dry sherry
two chicken breast
marmalade
lavender salt

Preheat the oven to 375° F. Pour a little sherry in your cooking dish – enough so there is about 1/4 of an inch in the dish. Place the chicken in the dish salt the chicken. Flip the chicken over salt the chicken. Spread the marmalade on the chicken. Place dish in the oven.

Now, as you know how, long you cook the chicken really depends on how big the breasts are. I check it after 15 or 20 minutes. Sometimes it needs more time sometimes it doesn’t. But that is it. Just cook the chicken until it is thoroughly cooked and you have some flavorful chicken!

I had purchased HUGE pieces of chicken so I cut them up. They cook better when they are a little smaller and we don’t need to eat those HUGE pieces all at once.

This was delicious! Thanks again, Lynn for the marmalade!

New Stuff Is Learned, By Experts (And Me) – Part 2

Posted by terrepruitt on January 13, 2020

Oh, thank you for coming back.  If you don’t know what I mean, perhaps you want to read part one first.  I realize that to some of you this may not be new, but I get excited when I learn something new.  I think that is why I love to teach.  I want to help people learn stuff and perhaps feel excitement.  Here is the rest of what I learned in the latest CPR/AED class that I was required to take.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaWe were told that through a little survey it was discovered that as high as 65% of first responders didn’t time the chest compressions right. This made me feel very, very, very good. The optimal is 110 compressions per minute. Getting the timing correct is very challenging to me – as I explained – so to hear that even first responders found it challenging was encouraging. To help with this issue in 2019 the 911 system has started using metronomes. There are metronome applications for phones. Download one and set it to 110 beats per minute and there you go. Compress when it ticks. Now there is no having to think about if you are doing it too fast or too slow, just make sure you can hear the metronome and press down when you do!

It has also been discovered that decompression is just as important as compression. There might be a tendency to lean on the chest or not come up enough to allow the chest to decompress and the heart fill with blood. Compressing the chest pushes the blood from the heart to the body and brain. Allowing the chest to decompress lets the heart fill back up with blood so as to not starve it. It is a muscle, it needs blood. So not only we were shown how far to press down we taught to make sure we came up enough. I have never heard that in previous trainings.

Now, for those of you that have taken CPR training you know this, but for those of you that have not one of the things that they emphasize (because it is so important) is to get 911 on its way. So once it has been determined that YES, in fact the person needs medical attention someone is assigned to call 911. And, if you are in a place that has an AED someone is assigned to go get it. That is as much team work as I have ever been instructed upon. One person takes charge and shouts assignments to specific people of calling 911 and getting the AED. Well, two things new to me . . . assign TWO people to go meet the first responders. Fire is going to get there first, so someone needs to bring them to the scene, but then the ambulance arrives, if no one is there to guide them they will not get to the person as quickly as they could then if someone is leading them to the victim. So . . . I would imagine the person calling 911 could be one of the guides.

Then the second thing was make CPR a team effort. If there are other people there that have taken training great! But if not, you can ask someone if they would like to help. Then while you are doing compressions you can instruct them on how to do it, so you can switch when you need a break. Compressions are not easy. They are very tiring. Even if you have your hips over your knees, your arms are straight, your heart is over their heart and you are using your larger muscles (and not your arms) to do the compressions it can get tiring. They say (again with the experts) that after 2 minutes the quality of the compressions starts to degrade. So after 2 minutes – which is 5 sets of 30 chest compressions and 2 ventilations) it is a great idea if you can switch to another person. We practiced working in teams in class. One of us did a set then we switched. The previous classes I took we worked in teams, but only to share a dummy. We didn’t switch off as you would when you need a break.  Knowing that I can recruit people to help and not be the ONLY person trying to save someone makes the whole idea of CPR on a non-responsive person less overwhelming.  I appreciated that.

In a well populated area it takes roughly 3 to 5 minutes for the first responders to arrive at a location, but it could take them an additional 3 to many minutes to arrive at the scene where the victim is. That could be 6 (at the least) when the person is not getting the blood/oxygen the body needs. So really, if you are doing chest compressions YOU are saving that person’s life.

So, it turns out the class was not as bad as I had thought it would be.  I feel I learned stuff.  Thanks, Lionheart Safety Training.

Well, are any of those things new to you?  What do you think?  Are any of these things interesting to you?  Have you ever taken a CPR class?

Faux Friday Photo

Posted by terrepruitt on January 11, 2020

I was busy taking down our Christmas tree and trying to un-decorate yesterday. I got involved and forgot out posting a Friday Photo. It is past the time we normally like to take down Christmas so I as on a mission to get the tree out of the house. When my husband came home from work he jumped right in to help and we were able to get the tree out of the house. Normally I would just skip my Friday Photo, I mean, I didn’t post on Friday so technically it is not a “Friday Photo’. But as I continued to pack up the Christmas decorations I saw this card and it is way too pretty to put away never to be seen again. So I wanted to post it on my blog so I could see it.

I will title this “Faux Friday Photo” so I will know how to find it.

Happy New Year!

New Stuff Is Learned, By Experts (And Me) – Part 1

Posted by terrepruitt on January 8, 2020

CPR certification expires in two years (at least when you take it through certain organizations). Before mine expired I took an online class to recertify just as I had done the last time I needed to recertify. Having taken in-person classes before, I realized that online courses when re-certifying is a great service. Sometimes there are classes that are both, online review and then hands on experience. It is pretty interesting all the classes that are offered. I was kind of happy because the course I took from the American Red Cross was not the same as they have offered before — which is always nice. It is a drag to take the same thing over and over. The online course had some improvements. One thing I liked was it testing me on the timing of the compressions. Yes . . . the online course tests you on the timing. Over the course of the program I was too fast and I was too slow. At first, I was too fast – I didn’t realize it was actually timing me so I just starting clicking as fast as I could to be done with it . . . but it makes you do it again until you get it correct. Then I was too slow . . . anyway, by the end of the course I felt my timing was better. Never felt that way before in a CPR class so I thought it was great that the course actually was able to keep track and help me improve. But my employer didn’t accept this training this time. Last time I renewed they did, but this time they didn’t. So I just decided to take a class they offer. As I mentioned in other posts about CPR training, you should check with your employer. I did not because they had accepted it before . . . perhaps their policy changed.

I was not looking forward to spending four hours in training. The online course was about that long but I didn’t have to drive to it. This in-person training was scheduled to be from 5:30 to 9:30 – ugh! The last time I took a class offered by my employer all we did was watch videos and it was so boring and I didn’t feel I got much out of it. It was so boring that my supervisor at the time was on her phone the entire class. That didn’t help matters. Perhaps you can see why I was dreading having to take this class. The first thing the man did, however, was tell us what he was going to go over, then he asked us what time we were told we were going to get out, then as if bragging, he claimed he was going to dismiss us an hour earlier than scheduled. He had my interest. He had a HUGE list of things he was wanted to cover AND he told us we were going to get out earlier than scheduled. Alright, show me what you got, Dude.

BAM! He did it! Plus he entertained us, he told us some new stuff, and he made us feel we could do it (perform CPR) if we had to.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaI have been taking CPR and AED training for 10 years . . . all people employed in the fitness industry have to so those of you in the industry know what I am talking about when I say hearing the same old stuff gets tiring. Yes, I will be the first to admit that I NEED to hear it again, but that doesn’t mean I don’t get bored.

But . . . within the last ten years, things have changed. I am going to share with you the things I learned in this latest training that I thought were cool. I am going to share with you in two posts because I don’t like long post. My last post was longer than I like them to be.  I want to keep them short so you will read them.

There was the decision to train people to do CPR without the rescue breaths/ventilations. Rescue breaths/ventilations are when you actually put your mouth on someone else’s mouth and breathe air into their lungs. Not everyone wants to put their mouth on a stranger’s mouth . . . there are SO many reasons for that, there is NO reason to be critical of that type of thinking. So, they (the experts, whoever they are) realized that chest compressions without ventilations are fine and much more effective at saving a life then nothing at all. So, hands only CPR is not new . . . I’ve been trained on it in the last ten years. But the sense that is ok, as in the complete and total non-judgment of someone not wanting to put their mouth on a stranger AND the acknowledgment that compressions only will get the job done is kind of new and rather refreshing . JUST compressions are ok and definitely better than nothing!

So, if that is all you do you are good, which is great because here I am already long . . . so, if you want to hear more of what I am excited about sharing check back, as I am going to try to keep you in suspense (not really, post is just too long.)

Charge Fast And Lasts A Long Time

Posted by terrepruitt on January 6, 2020

When my husband got his new phone it came with AirPods . . . yeah, it was years ago. Anyway, he really liked them. He had gone through a couple of “wireless” earbuds. They usually ended up dying pretty quick because they were not really good with getting wet. Or whatever. I had bought some wireless earbuds and I like them, I bragged about them in Affordable Wireless Earbuds. I like them, but I am not good about charging things when I am not using them, then when I go to use it, it needs to be charged. I also wasn’t finding many occasions to use them. But, being the generous kinda guy he is my husband kept asking me if I wanted some AirPods. I kept saying no because I don’t really like the earbuds/pods and . . . I am not good at charging and I don’t use the wireless earbuds that I have very often. Then they came out with wireless charging AirPods. So my husband asked me if I wanted his AirPods and he would get the new ones (he really wanted the new ones). I kept saying no. Well, he did well NOT buying them until one day he “accidently” 😉 left his AirPods at my dad’s. He couldn’t go a month or two without his AirPods and actually he wasn’t even sure he left them up there. But when we went back up there he found them. So . . . guess what . . . I inherited his AirPods. I put them in my drawer. I forgot about them for a couple of months. Then one day I decided to try them instead of carrying around my Beats Pill.

Not only had it been months since he gave them to me it had been at least a month before that when they had last been charged. But I thought I might as well try them, so I put them in — they worked! I was amazed that after all of these months they still worked. Wow. It had been at least 3 – maybe even four months and they were charged enough to work.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaThey are kinda cool. The charge lasts a long time. And when it gets low you can pop them into the case and it will charge up to about 80% in less than five minutes. That is very fast. Also while you are using them you can charge up the case so when you want to charge up the AirPods themselves you pop them in and bam! they have juice rather quick. If you want them at 100% you might have to wait a whole 10 minutes (or so). So, charging the AirPods is not as difficult as I thought. It is so quick which is really impressive to me.

It is also cool . . . to me that your phone tells you how much of a charge they have. It also indicates how much of a charge the case has. I find that helpful at times. I do find it odd that the AirPods are not always equal . . but whatever. With noticing the indication of amount of charge for the AirPods, I noticed that my phone does the same thing for my Beats Pill.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaSo I like that the charge lasts, that they charge quickly, and that the phone indicates the amount of charge, but I don’t like that they don’t have volume control. Not everything is recorded at the same volume and sometimes in the middle of what I am listening to, I want to adjust the volume. They do have four different actions you can choose to set each AirPod to perform. You can talk to Siri, Play/Pause, Next Track, or Previous Track. I have my left one set for Previous Track and my right one set for pause. With Audible you can choose between five different Jump Forward/Back times and the “Previous Track” on the AirPods corresponds to that setting – which is cool. The Beats Pill has volume and pause/play, but not forwarding or reversing capabilities. My husband always laughs as me because when he goes to talk to me I smack myself when I am wearing the AirPods . . . I am activating the pause.

I don’t use them to talk on the phone much . . . but I don’t talk on the phone much. When I am listening to a book and someone calls, I have used them. They work pretty well.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes, Cambrian Yoga & Cardio Dance, CYCD, Yin YogaIn addition to not having a volume control I don’t like that they stop playing when one is not in your ear. If you take one out of your ear they stop. If you can have them close together they will play, but that is annoying. It is not legal to drive with headphones/headset (both ears covered), so basically you can’t have two pods/buds in your ears. With the airbuds you could just use one and it worked fine but with the AirPods you can’t. Well, I just tucked one of them up on my ear with my glasses holding it and that works. But I find the whole – not working when they are far apart, kind of annoying. I have had one fall out and it stops the play. I would prefer that action to be an option. Maybe volume and an option to stop play when you are only using one could be a next upgrade. That would be cool.

Anyway, I am really impressed by the battery/charging situation. It actually allows me to use them because they charge so quickly.

At first when I would see the case I thought it was dental floss. And now that we have two cases that have the potential of lying around, I fancied mine up . . . hence the blue flowers around it.

So what about you? Do you use headsets? Do you use any wireless ones? Do you have AirPods? What do you think?

Late Christmas Post

Posted by terrepruitt on January 3, 2020

I am usually ready to put away the decorations, but this year, I am not. They are not “bothering” me and I am not tired of them. This one is actually not mine. I wish I would have thought to post it on Christmas. I was wanting to do a post on Christmas, but we were at my family’s (this is theirs) and I didn’t get to it when we got home. So, here . . here is what should have been posted on Christmas as today’s Friday Photo. I suppose by next week’s Friday Photo, I will have to move on from Christmas stuff . . . but not yet.

Happy New Year!

Starting 2020 With Some Melty Goodness

Posted by terrepruitt on January 1, 2020

Here it is another New Year.  WOW!  2020!  Here is another opportunity to recap last year or write about the year to come.  Not feeling either of those things this year.  So, I thought I would start off the year with a recipe.  Ooooo!  Ending the year with a “recipe” and starting the year with a recipe.  Sounds good to me, how about you?  Does that sound good to you?  Well, with this recipe comes a story.  I can’t say exactly when, but I can say that I remember it, so I couldn’t have been so young that I don’t remember.  My parents used to go out to dinner very infrequently.  We didn’t always have money for things – my dad worked a type of construction so there wasn’t always work – so going out to dinner was a super special treat.  When they went out to dinner one of their favorite places was a restaurant called The Bold Knight.  Now, unless you are over 50, even if you live in the bay area you have not been to The Bold Knight I am talking about.  Ya know, things change.  But back in the day I am talking about they used to have this cheese fondue that was delicious.  The last time I went to The Bold Knight, they had melted Velveeta.  Now, my husband loved it and I am sure there are other people that do, but back in the day they had a cheese fondue that tasted as if they actually cooked it and didn’t just put a chunk of yellow food-stuff in a pot and melt it.  Anyway, my mother LOVED their fondue.  She went on a quest to find a recipe that tasted just like it.  I know she tried a lot of things.  She finally settled on one.  And it has become the family recipe for fondue.

Cheese Fondue

(1 cube)   1/4 C butter
(1 tsp)   1/2 tsp salt
(1/2 tsp)   1/4 tsp dry (powdered) mustard
(3 tsp)   1 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
(1/2 tsp)   1/4 tsp garlic powder
(1/2 C)   1/4 C flour
(2 cans)   1 can (12 oz) BUDWEISER Beer*
(1 lb.)   1/2 lb. mild cheddar cheese (grated)

Melt butter, then stir in salt, dry mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder.  Add flour, a little at a time,  keep stirring, stir all the lumps of flour out.  Bring to a boil, then stir in a little beer at a time.  Cook until thickened.  Then put in cheese a little at a time while stirring.

Serve hot.

_______________________________________________________________________________

(The measurements in parentheses are for a DOUBLE batch.)

We dip raw vegetables; broccoli, bell peppers, carrots, mushrooms, cauliflower.  Also, cooked cubed steak.  Sometimes apples.  And ALWAYS bread.  I prefer sourdough bread, but my hubby is not a fan of the sourdough so I usually have two types of bread; sourdough and French bread.

*As a VERY IMPORTANT NOTE, it does not matter what type of cheddar cheese you use, you can use medium, you can use sharp, you can use mild, but it DOES MATTER what type of beer you use – it MUST BE BUDWEISER Beer.  Not light, not ultra, not lime, nothing other than plain ol’ BUDWEISER Beer!  Believe me.  I have thought it would be good to use something else to add a unique flavor or bring more to the fondue – NOPE!  Doesn’t work.  In fact, just this Christmas I laughed when my uncle said, “You have to use Bud.  I’ve tried other beers and the best one is Budweiser.  It doesn’t come out the same if you don’t.”  I agreed and told him I actually discovered that some years ago.  I thought I had told him that, but perhaps not.

For many years I was unable to attend Christmas dinner at my family’s house due to a scheduling conflict, once we started going I was surprised and happy to learn that one of their traditions is to have fondue as an appetizer during the day.

My husband and I have had a few years where we have fondue as our New Year’s Eve dinner or our New Year’s Day dinner.  We had it on New Year’s Eve this time.  I am always surprised I haven’t posted the recipe before, so I am doing it now.  Starting off 2020 right!

As you can see from the handwritten recipe, I can spell Worcestershire sauce as well as I can say it!  🙂

I hope you enjoy this family recipe.  We love it!

Or talk about the New Year; goals, dreams, where we want to be, things we have planned. Just so many ways to go. Well, in an effort to be brief yet celebratory I am going to go with a fun little recipe to allow you to ring in the new year with a little bit of liquid sparkle.

We once belonged to a winery up in Auburn. I would love to share the story but then that would take away from the “brief” so, I will say they used to pour their sparkling wine and their chocolate port together. It was yummy.

I have since tried to find a port to make it but have not yet found the perfect port. Theirs was much more chocolaty or something . . . I don’t know, but it made a FABULOUS cocktail. When I offer to pour one for someone they wrinkle their nose and I say, “Ok, fine. You can try mine if you want.” And they do then they want one of their own.
