Cute Idea To Avoid Stains

You might have seen my recent post where I was excitedly jumping up and down because of a recent mini-vacation my husband and I took.  (If you didn’t you can see it by clicking here)  I am still kind of floating on that “vacation high”.  So yummy.  I was looking through my pictures and I noticed a few shots of the little toiletry basket the have in the room of the bed and breakfast.  I thought, “Why did I take pictures of that?”  I had to think about it for a second then I remembered I was impressed with the BLACK towel that was in the basket.  It actually said, “makeup” on it.  Totally makes sense.  I don’t wear that much makeup that soap and water doesn’t take care of it.  Plus I don’t use anything waterproof.  But I have experienced makeup that has not come out of cream colored towels so I thought a BLACK towel is a perfect solution.  That is says “makeup” right on it is a nice little way to encourage guests to use IT when drying their face or wiping their hands during or after make up application.  Black towels will hide any dark makeup that refused to come out during laundering and stain the towel.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoA quick search on the internet revealed that there are several types of little black towels that have the work “makeup” on them.  I clicked on a few links and the name Turkish Towel Company came up a few times.  I also saw some little black ones that say “cosmetics”.  I also saw a website where a savvy shopper bought some black wash clothes on sale (for much less than what I was seeing the other towels priced at) and had her mom embroider them with the word “makeup”.  That seems to be the least expensive route.  I am not really in the market for “makeup towels”.  Sometimes I think things are cool/interesting/good ideas but I don’t want them or need them.  As I said my makeup is not so tough that soap and water doesn’t just take it right off my face.  So when I dry my face there is not enough residue black stuff to stain my towels.  Although, that same savvy shopper was planning on putting them in stockings or including them as part of gifts.  Now THAT is a good idea!  Cute and useful stocking stuffers!

There really is a product for everything out there, huh?  It always amazes me.  So much stuff out there.  So many great ideas (and some not so great ideas) for products!

I was a little disappointed last weekend, though when I used it one night and didn’t get a replacement.  But . . . perhaps they didn’t have that many and they need to be laundered separately from the white towels.  No biggie, it didn’t really matter, I was just a little surprised it wasn’t replaced.  I still think it is a great idea to save the rest of your towels from getting stained.

Have you ever seen black “makeup” towels before?  Can you see a use for them?  They are a pretty good idea, huh?

After Nia Visit

Have I ever told you that one of my students is a Naturopathic Doctor?  Yeah, I have, I looked it up.  I told you in the post about messing up, Messing Up Is Fun.  I told you about how she had been my student for years before I even knew she was a doctor.  Before class I am busy setting up — because there are things that need to be done — just normal things like taking off my socks and shoes, turning on the music, greeting new students, moving things away from the mirror, sweeping the floor, etc.  Sometimes even deciding what to teach.  Often times reviewing in my head what I am going to teach.  And then after there is the cleaning up . . . putting on my socks and shoes, and PAYING ATTENTION to where I put my phone and just the general wrapping up of class, I don’t always get in on the conversations.  Not only do I not get to be a part of them, but often times other students miss out on good stuff, too.  I had always wanted to gather as a group after class, but when I learned she was a Naturopathic Doctor and I hadn’t know for years then I decided we all HAD to meet after.  So there is a day for each of the venues that I teach at where we meet for coffee.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoFor the Wednesday class in the area of San Jose called Willow Glen we meet on the second to the last Wednesday of the month.  We meet at a Peet’s coffee shop down the street from the studio.  Period.  I always tell my friends and students that is where we will be.  They can join us whether they come to class or not.  And we have had people do that.  It is very nice.  There are many reasons why people can’t make it to class, but some have stopped by.

For the Thursday classes we meet on the last Thursday of the month.  We meet at a Peet’s coffee shop around the corner from the community center.  It was really cool today because we had ten people.  That is awesome.  That is a big group to have visiting for coffee.  More than half the class came to coffee!  While we were there, a person we all know showed up because she was planning on meeting someone else at that very spot.  She showed up a few minutes early to meet us because she knew we would be there.  So the ten turned into twelve for a bit.  It was fabulous.  So fun.

Not only do I learn about my students and their personal lives, I also get feedback from them.  It could DIRECT feedback or just something I pick up from the conversation.  Sometimes they mention something that they might not know about Nia and I love that I can take the time to explain it.  It is not always possible to get out all the information that can be shared about Nia WHILE you are teaching.  So I love to be able to explain.  Also, it reminds me that if the person talking doesn’t know that other people probably don’t know either so I can try to find away to let them know in class.

Often times it could be that people didn’t hear what I said, during class.  There can be a lot going on in an exercise class, as you may be aware.  Sometimes there is a fan in the room that might make it difficult for some to hear.  Or there might be people outside that distract us.  Or there might be someone walking through class just as I am explaining about something.  Could be that one is just so involved in their own dance that they miss something.  It is all fine.  But I love the opportunity to be able to provide some clarification during our visits.I also really love to hear what is doing on with them.  So many stories out there.

It is great to have NiaNow.com because I get a lot of people who are visiting the are that come to my classes.  I love that.  I always encourage ALL Nia teachers to put their classes on the site.  A lot of people like to keep up their movement routine while they are traveling so it is nice for people to be able to find a class near where they are staying.  I have a out of town student dancing with us now . . . she came to coffee with us.  So fun to experience this!

I have always wanted to have visits after my classes and today I was just so amazed to have such a large group!  I am so happy to be so blessed to have such great people in my classes as Nia students.  They are definitely people you want to have coffee with.

Long Over-Due Vacation

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoI love being a Nia teacher and teaching Nia classes, however, it nets more of a “cosmic salary” than one that allows for vacations.  The last time we went on vacation was before I lost my corporate job.  We took a BIG vacation in 2006 and 2007.  We have been to my father’s house, which is pretty close to a vacation because we don’t do any household chores and we just relax in a BEAUTIFUL lake community.  But I still work.  Since I only teach six classes a week, it might appear as if I only work six hours a week, but I am always writing a blog post or learning a routine, checking e-mails and creating flyers and marketing material.  So when the idea to go away for a weekend to celebrate my husband’s birthday was suggested it sounded intriguing.  We thought about Napa.  We like bed and breakfasts.  I found one for less than the cost of many hotels in that area.  So we decided to go!  For my hubby’s birthday we spent a wonderful weekend in Napa.  We had such a good time I wanted to share a story or two and few pictures.  It has been a long time since we vacationed!

My hubby gave himself a birthday present of taking three days off from work!  Good boy.  Did I catch him working during the weekend?  Well, I shouldn’t be a tattler.  His first day off was Friday.  I taught my Nia class in the morning then at 1:30 we were off to the land of the vines!  We arrived about 3:30 and were able to check in.  It was a cute little room.  Which I did not think to take pictures of until we were on our way out so . . . the room is not as spiffy in these shots as it is when you first arrive.  It was a perfectly fine room for the price.  It even had a little fridge!  I love that because we always have leftovers.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoWe didn’t make reservations for dinner on any night so John looked at Yelp for places that were closest to the place we were staying.  We like to be able to walk to downtown Napa.  The very closest place was Tarla.  I would DRIVE from home to eat there.  It was that good.  We called first but we were told that a party of two did not need reservations.  So when we walked in and he asked I said we were told we didn’t need any.  But then I also said that if it would get us in faster we would be a party of four and I patted the arm of the man standing next to me.  🙂  So that couple was whisked off to there seats.  As the host was telling us how long our wait would be (10 to 15 minutes — no biggie!), the man came back out and told the host that we could sit with them!  How FUN!  We ended up having a great time with a great couple.  It was really nice.  The man owns Wine Country Helicopters.  I would have loved to book a tour, but I didn’t think my hubby would do that.  But now that he knows the owner he said he might.  So next time!  Dinner was really yummy and the company was great.

Saturday was our wine shuttle tour. Where we were surprised to be with ten other people.  But they were all great so we had a really nice time.  We met three young attorneys, a mother-son-daughter trio, and a foursome of “mom friends”.  It was really nice.  The weather was perfect.  We actually didn’t end up with a lot of wine because three out of the five stops we had made we had said seven years ago that we never needed to visit them again.  And we were right!  We didn’t actually get to the ONE winery that we wanted to go to.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoSo that was the trip we made on Saturday.  We drove out to the winery we (I) wanted to visit.  Then we dropped off the car and headed back to town to hit a restaurant and some of the wine rooms.  The first “room” we came to was Prime Cellars tasting room.  We had a GREAT time with the young woman (Christine) pouring the wine.  She poured, we purchased . . . it was a nice visit.  We ate at the Bounty Hunter – the only place I will order a pulled pork sandwich.  Although it is in a different location than when we last visited, it is still a nice place to eat with great food.

We stopped at Tarla on our way back to the room.  The bartender made me one of her own concoctions — which tasted a bit like a Moscow Mule with out the heat.  We had a snack then headed back to our room.

The weather was GREAT all weekend.  A bit windy on Sunday, but that is ok.  The sun was shining and the sky was blue.  It was fantastic.  I am going to sub as much as I can so that I can get us back up there before 2021!  It is such a great place to visit!  My hubby said he had a GREAT birthday weekend and that is what is most important.

Compliments Over My Head

I think I am very correct in saying that Group Exercise Instructors and Nia teachers love to hear students ask, “Where else do you teach?” and “What else do you teach?”  Isn’t that the greatest thing?  It is such a huge compliment.  The student is asking where else can they get more of you.  The student is asking in what other ways can they get more of you.  I had never thought of that as a compliment.  I had never even realized it was a compliment.  When I was asked that, I used to feel bad because I didn’t teach anything else other than Nia.  I also felt bad when I just taught at one place.  I was always so focused on not being able to meet their additional needs I didn’t “hear” the compliment.  I didn’t hear the un-spoken, “You met my need here.”  Last year, I actually was in a required continued education class instructed by the YMCA when the teacher mentioned that if a student asks you those questions it is a compliment.  Ha.  Silly I had never thought of it as a compliment.  I was focused on something else entirely.  It strikes me as funny when I go into a situation to learn one thing and something totally different is taught to me.  I was taught to see it as a compliment.

Do you ever go into a situation expecting to learn one thing and come out surprised at what you learned?  I like when I can learn what I was expecting AND something I wasn’t expecting.  That always makes me feel happy.  I feel like I got a bingo or hit the lotto.  A two-for-one kind of thing.  A real deal.  Something completely worth my time.  Ya know?

Do you ever miss a compliment?  Are you ever so focused on something else you don’t even realize the person talking to you / asking a question is really in a sense giving you a compliment?  Sometimes it is kind of nice because later on it might hit you and bring a smile to your face, but then I feel bad I didn’t take the opportunity to show gratitude.  But sometimes that happens.

For a second I thought of listening with love, but I don’t think this is the same as that.  But perhaps.  Maybe if I had been listening with love instead of feeling bad I could help I would have noticed it was a compliment.  But then I would have been so excited about the class I had to take.  I wouldn’t have gotten that “extra” bang for my buck.  Ha, ha!

This same type of compliment would be said to a performer, “Where else do you perform?”  “What else have you performed in?”  Yeah, that is a compliment all right.

So how about it?  Have you ever experienced any unexpected learning?  Have you ever totally “missed” that someone was complimenting you?  What other situations would that type of comment fit?

Dancing Free

Do you ever just dance?  You might be one to turn on the music and start dancing.  Perhaps you have a favorite song you like to dance to?  Or you might be one who breaks into dance spontaneously.  You could be in the house and a song comes on and you don’t even really think about it, next think you know you are moving to the music.  Perhaps you are one that is so gusty or you just don’t care so you dance in the aisle at the grocery store.  Music moves us.  It is easy to dance to a song we like.  Sometimes we “can’t help it”.  We just burst into a dance.  But dancing without choreography in a dance exercise class?  No one telling you exactly how to move?  Just move to the music?  Without having consumed any alcohol?  It is a concept not easily grasped by many.  It is a concept that we practice often in a Nia class.  We call it Nia FreeDance.

As I mentioned dancing without choreography in an exercise class is a new concept to many.  Moving without having a structured plan doesn’t sound like exercise to many people.  Some people are very resistant to Nia FreeDance because of this reason.  Some people cannot understand how you can “get a good workout” without having a structured plan, without moving the same way over and over again.  The way we have been programmed to exercise includes repetition and structure.  It includes traveling in a straight line from point a to point b, it includes being told how to move.  So just moving without any idea of what comes after the present movement is vastly alien to some.

Yet, I have people who actually let go and try it.  Those who push beyond their own skepticism and doubt come up to me and say, “Wow!  I am sweating.”  Those who let the music move their bodies without thinking about it have said, “Who would have thought that I would have gotten such a great workout?”  Some realize, “I might be sore tomorrow.”  They MIGHT be sore the next day because they moved their bodies in ways that their bodies are not accustom to moving.

Nia FreeDance is there to help stimulate movement creativity.  So if you do it with full abandon you might end up with muscles that talk to you the next day.  Your body will have moved in new and different ways.  So Nia FreeDance is not the dancing you would do at a club or a dance lesson.  It is just free movement.  Yes, some of those cool club moves or patterns you learned in dance class sneak in because we dance what we know.  We think about it and move in that way.  But there really is more to FreeDancing.  It might have a pattern for a moment, it might have structure for a moment, but it moves away and comes back.  It is free.

The catch phrases have changed slightly since I participated in the Nia White Belt Intensive in 2008, but it is all basically the same.  The catch phrases give you a clue as to what the stage is for.  All the stages help you to FreeDance.  You can dance each stage separately or combine them in any fashion. Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo The idea is just to give you something to help get you moving and then give you something to keep you moving.  Moving in new and different ways.  The new and different active body, mind, emotions, and spirit.  FreeDance is one of the key things that makes Nia unique.  If you click on the stages above you will go to the post that I have posted for each stage.

I am very excited about the Special Nia Class and Nia Free Dance Playshop that I am producing next month.  So I have been thinking a lot about FreeDance and how great it is.  This post is a result of my excitement and my attempt at getting people excited and curious about FreeDance.  Reading about it is one thing, but getting up and actually DOING it is another.  These are the stages used to deepen your practice, but they are not what we will be covering in the Playshop.  As the flyer states, we will be learning Jason’s tools for FreeDance!  I hope you will join us!

A Quick Bit About The Brain

“What is Alzheimer’s Disease?  Alzheimer’s is a slow fatal disease of the brain affecting one in ten people over the age of 65.  No one is immune.  The disease comes on gradually as two abnormal protein fragments called Plaques and Tangles accumulate in the brain and kill brain cells.”  Then the video goes on to say WHERE in the brain those fragments start and WHAT is in that part of the brain.  The first place is the middle of the bottom part of the brain the place where memories are formed.  The video states that as the disease progresses it becomes harder and harder to form new memories.  Then the disease spreads to the language processing portion of the brain.  Then, Alzheimer’s goes to area of the brain in the front where logical thought takes place.  Problem solving, grasping concepts and making plans are some of the things affected.  This video goes on to show the way the disease progresses.  It somewhat helps explains things like why a person who suffers from Alzheimer’s Disease can remember things from years ago, but not decide what to wear today or what to eat for a meal.  It is a less-than-four-minute video that explains a little bit about how the brain is affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.

The video is about five years old and is from www.AboutAlz.org, but I just saw it posted on Facebook this past weekend.  I thought it was very informative and I wanted to share it.  It quickly and basically explains the progression of the disease.  It states that “the progression from mild forgetting until death is slow and steady and takes place over an average of eight to ten years.”

I was wondering if those numbers have changed since it has been almost five years.  So I clicked on “Statistics About Alzheimer’s Disease, Alzheimer’s Association” under “Alzheimer’s Resources”.  There is a lot of information on that page, like:

“An estimated 5.2 million Americans have Alzheimer’s disease in 2014, including approximately 200,000 individuals younger than age 65 who have younger-onset Alzheimer’s.” The Alzheimer’s Association site also states: “Alzheimer’s is officially the 6th leading cause of death in the United States” and “It kills more than prostate cancer and breast cancer combined.”  This site also has a “brain tour” which has seven “pages” of basic brain information.  It has nine “pages” of “Alzheimer’s Disease and the Brain”.  It shows that the brain actually shrinks as it is attacked by the proteins.

I didn’t actually look to see if the progression has been slowed . . . as usual, I clicked a link and got distracted.  But, I think this is enough information for now.

I just thought this video was interesting.  I am sure there are more detailed videos out there, but sometimes quick and simple is nice.  Usually I can spot David Hyde Pierce’s voice in a second.  The first time I saw this I was surprised that he was the one narrating it.  It got me the second time too!  He is a spokesperson for the Alzheimer’s Association.

I like to share the things I think are interesting.  Plus . . . I like to put it on my blog so I know where to find it when I want to see the information again.  I hope this helped teach you a bit about something you might not have known about.  I would imagine if you know someone – especially if you are taking care of someone with Alzheimer’s you know this information.  So, like I said, I hope you learned something.

Today I was lucky enough to share it with many of my loves. We enjoyed a relaxing day and a wonderful dinner. I hope you have people in your life you feel it for. I hope you have people in your life you say it to often. I hope many people say it to you often. Feel it, say it, show it, enjoy it. It is wonderful. You are lucky if you have it.

Dancing Away The Stickiness

More often than not in my Nia classes we have a physical focus.  A focus and an intent in an exercise class is not easy for some people.  So having a focus that is physical seems, for many, to be easier than a focus that is not.  I know I have mentioned this before because I know I have talked about focuses before.  Today, as always, I asked my class if “they had anything”.  Usually someone comes up with a physical thing . . . sore neck, tight hamstrings, aching back, tight shoulders . . . ya know, something physical.  Today someone said, “Unstuck.”  I had overheard her mention something about being “stuck” while I was getting ready to teach, and I thought that would be a great focus, but I wasn’t sure how to do that.  So I said, “Yeah, I heard you mention that, but I am not sure how to do that.”  Someone else piped in about being stuck, too.  And I laughed and commented that if I knew how to get “unstuck” I wouldn’t ever be stuck.  And the “stuck” we were talking about was a feeling of being stuck either in an emotion or a situation or just the feeling of being stuck!  So we focused on getting “unstuck”.

The person that originally mentioned feeling stuck was happy to hear that others sometimes felt that way.  That is something I learned about feelings they are like questions . . . if one person has it (the feeling or the question) there is at least one other person that does too.  There are no stupid feelings.  Now, I do believe there are no stupid feelings, but I will admit to being guilty of thinking and sometimes even saying that as a knee-jerk reaction to someone I love saying something I think of as not nice about themselves.  If one were to say, “I feel ugly.”  “I feel like a bad person.”  My automatic reaction is “that’s stupid you aren’t . . . ”  But if they FEEL that way that is not stupid.  So I am still learning to curb that reaction.  But I digress . . . back to getting unstuck.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYoAs I said, I wasn’t sure how to dance “unstuck”.  I wasn’t sure how to make that a focus, but then I decided . . . . because I believe . . . that sometimes just thinking about it can help things move along.  So my thoughts were that if you were feeling stuck, just acknowledging it and moving with it could be enough to unstick it.  Or it could be enough to think of an idea on how to “unstick” it.  Or it could just open you up to an idea that is going to come later.  Just all types of stuff.  We agreed that dancing with the focus of getting unstuck and the intent of being open to that and whatever it meant and however we could achieve that would be our focus and intent for the class.

One person mentioned not getting “too unstuck” which gave me the opportunity to remind people that we are dancing our own interpretation.  When I suggest people move as if they are floating in water, everyone moves in their own way.  They imagine their own “floating in water”.  The same with getting “unstuck”.  One can get as “unstuck” as they feel they need to be.  The person that mentioned this left early so I didn’t get to delve into what she meant . . . because it could mean so many things.

After class, I actually felt better and a little less stuck.  “Unstuck” could relate to letting go or being loose.  It is one of those things that if you are feeling anything related and you focus on it with the intent of acknowledging it or relieving it, it can just happen.

For those that are challenged with focusing on things that are not strictly physical “unstuck” works for that because one could have a tight muscle that is “stuck”.  Or a joint that might need some loosening because it feels “stuck”.  So dancing to “unstick” is really a great focus.

I am always amazed at how my class comes up with such great things to focus on.  I am further amazed at how so often what they come up with is something I am feeling the same need for.  Getting “unstuck” is great.

Watermelon Radish Salad

My last post was about receiving the Watermelon Radishes in the organic produce box that we have delivered.  Well, I didn’t know what to do with them – remember, part of the reason why I get a box delivered is to experience new-to-me produce.  When I had glanced on the internet at what they were I saw a few things about “Pickling” them.  I hadn’t considered roasting them, as I think of them more like a radish — because they are — and I wouldn’t think to roasted a radish.  So I thought I would try throwing them in some vinegar and seeing what that would be like.  I didn’t do it the day I received them, but I did it the next day.  Although they were not going to be a part of Saturday’s dinner.  I was thinking we would have them Sunday.  So I didn’t think they would be soaking this long.  Here it is Tuesday and we still have not eaten them.  I tasted them so that I could post this.  I will serve them tonight with dinner.  They taste ok.  I am not getting a lot of THEIR flavor possibly because they set so long.  I only had a few pieces as I do want save them to have with dinner tonight.  Here is what I did to make the Watermelon Radish Salad.

Watermelon Radish SaladDance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo

1 1/2 tbsp of SEASONED rice vinegar
3 tbsp of REGULAR rice vinegar
3/4 tsp sugar
1/2 tsp salt
dash of pepper
1 large Watermelon radish (a little smaller than a tennis ball)

Mix the ingredients in a bowl, except the radish.  Slice the radish as thin as you can.  Then put the slices in the bowl with the other ingredients.  Flip the bowl or stir the radishes every once in a while so that all of the slices are in the liquid at one time or another.

Let set for at least two hours.

Then eat as a snack or a side dish.

I think next time I will add some onions and garlic.  In my quick research of them, I kept seeing the comment that they were “sweet” so I didn’t want to add garlic to that.  Also when I sliced them and tasted them they were really peppery so I didn’t want to add the onion.  But now that I have tasted the plain and simple way I will probably add some more flavor.  Perhaps so soy sauce to make it more like a cucumber salad?

So even though I usually roast my veggies, as I mentioned I hadn’t considered doing that but, my husband shared my post on Facebook and one of his friends did say he LOVED them roasted.  So I will probably try that.  We have two left and they are huge so I COULD probably do both.  Make another “salad” and roast one.  We will see.

My evening yoga class is on break this week so that means I will have extra time to cook this week so that just might work.

I do want to say that the smell coming from the radishes is NOT GOOD.  It is worse than soaking beans.  I am using my essential oil and candles remedy to battle the stench.

Watermelon Radish

So our produce delivery has progressed into something kinda neat, but kinda not.  You may remember me having posted about how I wanted to start receiving a produce box because we would receive farm fresh organic produce.  But one of the main reasons I wanted to get a box was because I would end up with things I didn’t know what they were.  Or I might know what it was but have no idea how to serve it.  So it was a way to get organic produce but also “force” myself into new things.  New fruits, new vegetables.  Again – perhaps not TOTALLY NEW, but something I had never purchased because I didn’t know what to do with it.  Well, that worked for a while.  I was exposed to some new things and learned how to cook and/or serve some new things.  I have acquired some new favorites and have learned that somethings I just don’t care to bother with.  Well, the service has progressed as I started out saying.  It is more like shopping now.  The week before we are to receive our box I get an e-mail that allows me to pick and choose what I want.  So now I am not getting things just arriving on my doorstep.  I kind feel like they are just including standard stuff and if you want anything out of the norm you have to go choose it.  So I am not being “forced” to try new stuff.  Yes, I have the option to choose new stuff, but what really ends up happening is I get the e-mail and I think, “Oh, I can do that later, because I am busy now.”  So I don’t go through the hassle of logging in and looking at all the produce available.  Then next thing I know it is the night before delivery and it is too late to change the standard order.  So . . . . like all progression there are pros and cons.  I did happen to log on for our latest delivery and order something new to me.  Watermelon Radishes.

I love red radishes, but my digestive system and them don’t get along.  They leave me feeling very uncomfortable so I don’t eat them.  I sometimes buy them for my husband.  I put them in his lunch.  When I put them on his salad, I might take a piece and cut it up really tiny and put it on my salad, but I don’t even eat a whole radish.  Just pieces.

I didn’t know what a watermelon radish was.  So I decided to get it.  The information I glanced at prior to ordering stated it was sweeter than a regular radish.

Well they arrived and they are huge in comparison to other radishes.  Sort of, we also received regular radishes in this box and they were the biggest radishes I have ever seen.  So I am experimenting with a watermelon radish.  When I cut it, I took a piece for my hubby and I to try.  It tasted ADance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose,  Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo LOT more peppery than a regular radish AND it was sweeter.  So either the ones we got were the typical ones described in the descriptions I read or the people writing the descriptions have a different idea of what “sweet” is than I do.

Two sites I looked up this morning had the EXACT, word for word, description of what a watermelon radish is.  I don’t know which site copied which site, but that is always disappointing to me.  If a site states that the information is from another site, that is understandable to me, but just two sites, seemingly unrelated having the SAME EXACT information . . . bah!

Now I am looking at a different site and it is saying that watermelon radishes are the same as Red Daikon.  I have heard of red daikon before, but not watermelon radishes.  I think of daikon as long vegetables.  But round or long they are all radishes.  The watermelon radish is a winter radish.

Wiki states:

The heirloom “watermelon radish” is another Chinese variety of daikon with a dull green exterior but a bright rose or fuchsia-colored center.”
