Cootie Catcher

Posted by terrepruitt on April 20, 2016

A few months ago I heard that there might be a Gilmore Girl Reunion.  Then as things unfolded (ha, that will be a pun, wait for it) it turns out that there is going to be one.  Well, I wanted to be up-to-date and refreshed on the series so I started re-watching it on Netflix.  I am so happy that there is such thing as a start and a stop when watching some programs because I often have to stop this show – and quiet often –  because I really cannot stomach Emily Gilmore.  I can barely stomach Taylor, but I don’t usually stop watching because of him, but I do because of Emily.  I just need a break.  But then again when I started re-watching the entire series I was wondering why I had a vague feeling of not liking Lorelai because I love her, well, I did.  I just got to the episodes where I don’t like her so much and now I know why I had a “bad taste” in my mouth regarding her.  Season six the last episode.  I am just now beginning season seven and it turns out I didn’t need to rush to re-watch the entire series because I think the word is that the mini-series won’t even be out until 2017, but we will see.  Netflix is doing the revival.  Anyway . . . a couple of seasons back . . . I don’t even remember which one now, they had a cootie catcher on the show.  That had me thinking.  How fun!  I want to make a cootie catcher.  So here you go.

First you need to have a square piece of paper.  If you are using an 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch piece of paper you make it square by folding over one corner to meet the edge of the paper.  Then you draw a line, then cut along the line.  Now your paper is ready to go.

Next fold each corner into the line and to meet each other.

And you end up with a smaller square.

Then turn the square over and fold all four corners into meet each other.  So now you have a smaller square.

Then fold it in half with the four points you just created on the INSIDE.  So you have two squares on each half (the outside) of the fold paper.

You put your fingers in the four squares and work the catcher open and close.

Then you write on it allowing it to do what you want it to do.  One version is colors on the four squares (spelling the color open and close . . ), then numbers on the eight triangles inside (then you would spell the number, opening and closing the catcher), then have the person you are playing with choose another number and open the number and read the fortune/quote inside.  Ahhh, the simple things.

Some people call them fortune tellers, but they can be used for anything.  You can use them to help assign chores.  You can use them to help figure out what to have for dinner (hey, I might need to make one just for that).  I am going to use mine with my Nia students to give us our focus and intent for our Nia class.  That will be a post on its own.

Remove Green To Be More Green

Posted by terrepruitt on April 1, 2016

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitToday is April Fool’s Day.  I am not one to play pranks or enjoy pranks played on me.  But today, I wished so hard that I was the victim of a cruel joke.  I pulled into the parking lot where I teach Nia three days out of the week and I was so sad to see that ALL the trees are marked for removal.  So the tree-lined parking lot that one must drive down to enter the main parking lot will no longer be tree-lined.  There will no longer be trees and sky to look up at.  I was running late today, but the supervisor of the center was walking by as I was getting ready for class and I asked him about the trees.  I believe he said that they will be removed and relocated.  I really was in a hurry so I was unable to get more details, but I think he said if they can’t fit in the parking lot most of them will go to parks.  But that doesn’t change the fact that the trees will no longer be at the center.  They are putting up those solar parking canopies.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitSo, I saw the solar parking canopies go up in school parking lots and I thought it was ridiculous that they need to add shade for cars.  But then I was informed that they are solar.  So I thought that was cool.  The few school parking lots that I have seen them go up in were just barren plots of asphalt.  That makes sense to me.  But at this center they are taking down trees.  This makes me sad.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThere just seems to be so much metal and concrete around, I think it is so sad when a tree gets taken down/moved/removed to put up more metal and concrete.  A comment made was “it is being done to be green”.  I am just not convinced that removing green trees is the way to be green.  It just seems so wrong.  Also, I was told that now there will be shade for cars, more than there is already provided by the trees that they are taking down.  Again . . . not convinced that cars having shade is more important than birds having homes and places to eat.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitAs I was standing in the parking lot talking to one of my students who was equally sad that the trees were going away we were listening to the birds and watching them flit around in the trees.  While we enjoyed it, it was somewhat bittersweet because at one point, there will be parking canopies going up in place of the trees.

No April Fool’s joke here.  Actual live trees, green trees are being removed so we can be green.  Places that birds and bugs live and feed will be removed so we can have shade for our cars.  Makes me sad.

The center is quite large and so I am bummed that trees have to be removed instead of some type of roof top installation of solar panels.  I mean, solar panels are great to help with energy.  It makes sense: sun, power — good.  But it is so sad that the trees have to go.  It is so sad that they will be replaced by metal and concrete.

It was even more prophetic that when I got in my car the radio was playing, “It’s The End Of the World as we know it.”  I am not even certain that a more appropriate song would have been Big Yellow Taxi, ya know the one that says “They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.”

Sigh.  Good-bye pretty tree-lined parking lot.  I’ll miss you.

Foam That Could Save Lives

Posted by terrepruitt on February 22, 2016

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitTechnology and our advancements are so amazing.  There are so many things I take for granted that are truly amazing.  It is just that since they have been around my whole life or just so long that I forget they are amazing.  Like the postal system and running water.  So cool.  I can put something in a box and within two to three days someone four states away gets it.  I love that.  And don’t even get me started on showers.  Then there are things that I don’t even know about that are amazing.  I know there are things out there that are so cool, when I hear about them I am just wowed.  They could be things that have been around “forever” and they are just new to me or they could be new things, but they are amazing.  Have you heard of Trauma Foam?  I heard about it a bit ago, but my notes got shuffled off into a corner where I just noticed them the other day.  Trauma Foam is amazing!

Trauma Foam was created by a Massachusetts General Hospital Surgeon, Doctor David King, and  Arsenal Technology, a company that develops foams and fibers. Trauma Foam is a two part liquid that is injected into the abdomen and through a chemical reaction it expands compressing the organs and stopping the bleeding.  This idea is that this type of substance could be used on victims of trauma when the wound is lethal and bleeding needs to be stopped for up to three hours.  So in cases where it could take a few hours to get to the correct medical help.  This Trauma Foam could save lives.

The original use for it was in combat situations, but like many things, they realized it would have civilian uses, too.  The foam does need to be injected with a special foam dispensing pump gun, as pictured.

The test conducted have shown that when the injury is lethal it can help save the life for up to three hours.  Tests have also been conducted to help determine the amount that needs to be injected.  The team working on it received a 25 Million Dollar grant from the Department of Defense to work on development of this foam.

This foam has been in the works for at least four years.  Information on the internet says they were talking about getting FDA approval in 2015 . . . . which could mean they are close and might get it in 2016 or 2017.  Seems like somethings take a couple of years to get approved.

In looking for information regarding this foam I came across another group that was creating something similar.  Their deliver system was portable.  But, it seemed like it was more for smaller wounds, but ones that could still be fatal.  Perhaps the two groups can team up.

I found this pretty amazing.  I know we have things to stop bleeding but this can help for up to three hours and that is the big thing.  It sometimes takes time to get to the proper medical facility.

What do you think?  Have you heard of this?

Groups: Public, Closed, Secret

Posted by terrepruitt on February 1, 2016

I like Facebook. I like to see what my friends are up to. I love that when I see someone in person it can sometimes feel as if it hasn’t been months or even years since I’ve seen them because I have been able to see what is going on in their lives through Facebook. In many cases I have been able to communicate with them through Facebook.  I have made a lot of people on Facebook who do Nia.  That is cool.  Facebook is incredible for a lot of reasons. I also think Facebook is awful for a lot of reasons. One thing that really bugs me is that I can be added to a group. I don’t like that. I know that all I have to do is leave the group, but I really don’t think Facebook should allow friends to just add you to the group. If I wanted to be a part of the group don’t you think I would join it myself? I don’t like to be in a lot of groups because some groups are public. Did you know that there are different privacy settings for groups? There are.

I didn’t know there were different privacy settings for groups until one day — I don’t know what I was thinking — I volunteered to create a group for a group of people I was in. So — people I meet with face-to-face — wanted a group so that we could, post things and whatnot. But I didn’t know how to create the group (that is what I meant when I said, “I don’t know what I was thinking.” I volunteered to do something I didn’t know how to do.), I just figured I had more time than most of the people in the group so I volunteered. Which meant I needed to find out how to create the group. That is when I learned that there are three different types of groups.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitOne wonderful thing Facebook did is they have a handy-dandy table to help people understand the differences in the privacy settings for each group. Made my job of figuring out how to create a group so much easier . . .well, it made my job in figuring out which type of group to create easier. Facebook still has some funny stuff when it comes to creating a group and inviting people into it.

Sometimes looking this stuff up is not difficult, in fact here is the link to the page of FB, it could just be that by the time you have a moment to do the research you forget. So I am posting it here in case you are interesting.

You can also easily look at the groups you are joined to and hover over the name and it will show whether it is Public, Closed, or Secret. Now mind you I am doing this on an actually computer. That might be completly irrelevant to many users because not many people use computers any longer.

Anyway, when you are creating a group or joining a group, if you care about who can see what, this chart might be something you are interested in checking. According to the chart ANYONE can see everything in a public group. Anyone can join, anyone can see the group’s name, anyone can see who is in the group, anyone can see posts, etc. Anyone, including people just searching on Facebook.

A closed group has a little more privacy, in that only members can see posts and searches on Facebook.

The secret group is a lot more private. Now, I know one might ask why anyone would post something on the internet, especially Facebook and think that it can really be a secret. Well, for me and my groups’ purpose it is not so much that it is a secret, as in people can know about it, it is more about us wanting to have group discussions. Sometimes when you have other people who have not been part of the in-person meetings trying to participate in the online stuff it takes away from the conversation. So while, in our case, we have a “secret” group, it is not as in TOP secret and things that one wouldn’t want on the internet. So there could be many reasons a group is “secret” even though it is on the internet.

Some people might not even care about this type of stuff, but here it is for those that do.  And it is on Facebook, too.

Did you know about the different privacy settings of Facebook Groups?

Last Year’s Christmas Gift

Posted by terrepruitt on January 8, 2016

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitLast year (2015) my Christmas present was an event.  I asked for tickets to Cavalia.  Do you know what that is?  It is a horse show that travels around.  Not a horse show that is just a display of horses like a dog show or a car show, but more like Cirque Du Soleil.  It is a traveling entertainment type of deal.  The first time we saw it, in 2004,  we had to drive to Berkeley, which is kinda far.  It was fantastic.  There were huge horses that seem to run at their top speeds under a big top!  It was amazing.  Then in 2012, it came to our city.  I saw the tent at least once a week, but we didn’t go to that one.  This year it was in San Francisco, which is even further, but I still wanted to go.  So, I asked for it as my Christmas gift.

When we went to purchase the tickets the shows were only through the end of December, so I picked a date and my hubby bought tickets. Then I was thinking about picking a date for Christmas with my girlfriends and I realized that I had my hubby buy tickets for the weekend that I had “all-weekend” training.  Ugh.  I was so upset with myself!  I went online to pick other dates and they had just added new dates, they were staying into January.  Nice.  So much better than trying to get in before the Holidays!  So when my hubs went to get the new tickets even better seats were open.  So yay!  It worked out so much better.  Better seats and a better date, yay!

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City FitSo we went to the show and it was fun.  Before the show there was a quiz.  We learned some stuff.  There are currently 65 horses in the Cavalia stables.  There are 12 stallions.  There are no mares, all the horses are males.

There was a lot of “people entertainment”, as in entertainment by people.  I don’t remember there being so much the first time we went, but it could just be my memory, because it really seems like the time they weren’t on stage they were changing costumes.  But, even though, I would rather see more horse entertainment, the people entertainment was VERY good, amazing even.

The seats were not really cramped which was nice.  The people we were seated with were very nice which always makes a show more enjoyable.

The venue was very strict about cell phone use.  If the ushers saw someone using a cell phone they rushed over to make them turn it off.  There was no cell phone use during the show.

We bought a few souvenirs.  Two magnets and an ornament.  It’s blue!

I very much enjoyed the show and appreciated my Christmas gift.  I enjoyed spending time with my hubby.  I do not feel, though, as if the show was as thrilling as the one we originally attended.  I am not sure if it is just because they no longer have the big Percheron, Mimi.  It just seems as if the thrill of power and speed was not significantly represented.  There was a lot of great dancing and synchronization movement going on, but not power and speed.  I was just a tiny bit disappointed.  Not complaining, just sharing.

It was an amazing show.  The horses are beautiful.  The people are even more beautiful.  It is really a show worth seeing.  And again, it was a fabulous gift.

Even though the season is not about receiving it is fun to share when you receive something you love.  Did you get anything you are excited about?

You Are Responsible

Posted by terrepruitt on January 6, 2016

So I was reminded about something recently.  It kind of has to do with happy people.  I was reminded that there are two kinds of people – in general, in regards to happiness.  There are those that know where happiness comes from and then there are those that don’t.  There are those that understand happiness starts from within themselves.  There are those that seek it outside of themselves.  There are those that know they are responsible for their own happiness.  There are those that look to OTHERS for their happiness or blame others when they are unhappy.

I am not here saying that people need to be happy all the time.  No, I am just saying that some people realize that is up to them to be happy.  To either create situations in which they are happy or to BE happy in the situations they are in.  There are people who point the finger at others because they are unhappy.

I believe that people can ADD to your happiness and “make” you happy, but they are not responsible for MAKING you happy — that is your job.  And when you are unhappy don’t be pointing the finger.  More often than not when you are unhappy it is because of something YOU ARE DOING or NOT DOING.

This is just a general type of statement (the worst kind to make on the internet, I know), but I was just slapped in the face with this recently and then the very next day that video with Jada Pickett Smith came across my Facebook feed again.  It had been floating on by because I had been scrolling past it, the titles that were accompanying it were something I wasn’t interested in.  But then, after the slap, I clicked on it and I laughed.  I was thinking, “HA!  Isn’t that a perfect thing to be seeing right now.”  I got confirmation that I am not the only one that thinks I am not responsible for OTHER people’s happiness.  Why thank you, Mrs. Jada Pinkett Smith.  She talks about how there needs to be balance in one’s life so that they can achieve happiness and not rely on others to make them happy.  Have you seen that video?  Click the picture below to go to a Youtube posting of it.**

Then there is this song that always has be thinking, “YEAH!”  The line: “You’re a catalyst to your own, happiness you know“.  It is up to you, Baby.

Pumpin Blood (Belarbi Remix)
NONONO

Hey ho on the road again
Moving on, forward
Sticks and stones, won’t break the bones
We’re in the car… on a highway

It’s so magical feeling, that no one’s got a hold
You’re a catalyst to your own, happiness you know

Cause it’s your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood
It’s your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood
And the whole wide world is whistling
And it’s whistling

Hey ho on the run again
Drive is strong, onward
Stick and stones won’t take his course
Sky got the part, in the front seat

It’s the best of world’s feeling, like nothing can go wrong
You’re the decider of the world you’ll get to know

Cause it’s your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood
It’s your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood
And the whole wide world is whistling

Hey ho on the road again
On the highway, on the highway
Hey ho on the road again
On the highway, on the highway

Cause it’s your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood
And it’s your heart, it’s alive
It’s pumping blood
And the whole wide world is whistling

And it’s whistling,
And it’s whistling,
And it’s whistling

So, what do you think?  Are you one that thinks you are responsible for other people’s happiness?  Are you someone who knows you are responsible for your own happiness?

New For 2016

Posted by terrepruitt on January 4, 2016

WHOA!  2016!  Welcome, huh?  I think I remember posting last year about how the year felt different.  Didn’t feel so NEW.  Perhaps that is just a symptom of age?  Nothing new here, move along.  No, no, not you, don’t move along!  I am going to do something new on my blog.  I would love to be doing something exciting, but these next two months are going to be super busy for me.  So, I am going to make a shift that MIGHT help with that.  You may have noticed that the last half of 2015, I didn’t post on Thursdays every month.  Then a couple of months I skipped posting on Saturday.  A few of the times I didn’t post throughout the year it was because I forgot, but the majority, I had decided not to post.  Sometimes it doesn’t come as easy as other times so, I just gave in.  Well, I am going to try a new schedule to see if that helps with being able to post on my self imposed schedule.  I am going to try posting on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  I would like to post Mondays and Thursdays, but Thursdays are the days that give me the most trouble.  If I had a post prepared it would be fine, but I am not always that on top of things.  I find myself trying to both get dinner ready before yoga class and write a blog post.  Then I am off to teach class and when I come back I have to finish cooking dinner and write the post, leaving my hubby sitting all by himself for the evening.  If you saw the size of his pouty lip you would agree that I need to do something different.

So, here starts a new page for my blog.  I have been blogging since 2009, so for seven years my schedule has been Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays.  Now onto:  Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  I am sure it will take me a few to get used to it, but we will see.  Depending on things it could end up being just two days . . . we will see!

I thought I would share some of the fun facts that WordPress shares with me (I am sure I am the only one that is so special) about the past year.  Fun stuff!

Good-bye 2015

Posted by terrepruitt on December 31, 2015

Tuesday I was too busy celebrating Christmas with my girlfriends.  We get together during Christmastime and visit.  We have done it every year for almost thirty years.  I didn’t get around to writing a post that day.  Then today/tonight I am busy celebrating the end of 2015 and the New Year.  I am just stopping to write this quick (super quick) post.   Here is our New Year’s Eve.

We were lucky to have our niece come visit.  No pictures because we spent the day relaxing and don’t want to post pictures of us in our jammies!

We had cheese fondue for dinner.  I will say it was very good.  John has marinated the meat and he did an excellent job.  Then we read our Good Things Jar.  There were a lot of “cat” notes in there.  A lot of “the cats are so sweet”.  They really are.  Now we are waiting for 2016.

Come dance with me at one of my Nia classes next year.  It would be great!

I hope you had a nice 2015 and
I hope you have a very WONDERFUL 2016!

2015 Christmas – May It Be Merry

Posted by terrepruitt on December 24, 2015

So it is Christmas Eve.  I spent the evening with family.  We had a nice time.  The Host and Hostess always have a very beautiful home and serve a wonderful meal.  I don’t know how John’s brother-in-law and sister do it.  But even though I didn’t have anyone over I still have a lot of things to do.  So I will wish all of you a very Merry Christmas.  I hope your celebrations were joyful and bright.

2015 Goodie Jar – Almost Time

Posted by terrepruitt on December 22, 2015

It is almost time to read the contents of the Goodie Jar.  Oh yes, the Goodie Jar.  We are still doing it.  We actually have three containers going on.  One was the original one that is the Princess House Pitcher.  That one looked pretty festive (and it was full) so I put it in the China cabinet hoping it could be passed off as a Christmas decoration.  Then the other one is a container that sits on the peninsula and has to be put away to make room for the Christmas decorations that are all over the peninsula.  So I have a note in the present Goodie Jar dish that reminds me to go into the closet to get the planter that we were using to put good things in.  So it is almost time.  I really like this tradition.  I think this is the third year that we have done it.  I am not sure, but I think we will do it again next year.

Super sweet.  The socks are super cute.  They have cats!!!  She is a cat lover herself!

There is just always something that is a good thing that makes me smile.  So many of my friends, family, and students are noted in that jar.

If you have not done a good things jar, I would like to strongly suggested it.  It is such a great way to remember the good things in life.  And it is really fun because you get to get TWO, maybe even THREE, smiles out of them.  One is when the thing occurs, two is when you write it down, and three is when you read it.  And sometimes it is really funny when you read it because it might take you a minute to remember what you were talking about.  Then, if your family and friends (or whomever you are reading them with) are into it, you get to tell them the story.  Often times things that make you smile make for a good story.

Ooooo!  I am getting really excited thinking about it.  Can’t wait!!!

So are you still doing a good jar?  Might you do one next year?
