It Is Ok To Do What You Need

Posted by terrepruitt on October 17, 2015

Remember when you attend a class (Nia, yoga, Zumba, Spin, Boot Camp, whatever), it is for you.  Remember that it is important to do what you need at the time you are in class.  So you don’t have to do the pose, say you are in a yoga class, to your fullest if you need to save your energy for other things you have to do in the day or the rest of your week.  You don’t have to prove to your instructor or other classmates that you can do it.  It is more important to do what your body needs.  Don’t be afraid to listen to your body intelligence.

I might have posted about this before.  If not an entire post, I know I have mentioned it, but sometimes we need reminding.  I recently took a class in which I was doing more than I should have.  It was what I was capable of doing, so I was doing it.  I had told myself before the class that I needed to hold back a little because I was feeling a bit fatigued and I had three more classes left to teach in the week, and I had a long weekend ahead.  My allergies had been bothering me, and if you have allergies (hay fever) then you know how exhausting they are.  I was tired.  My plan had been to do modified poses, but then I got caught up in just DOING the poses and not in doing what I needed.

I found myself thinking to myself, “Listen to what you always tell your students.  Do what you need to do at the time.  You know you need to conserve a bit of energy for the rest of the week.”  So I backed off.  I was actually more proud of myself for doing less because I needed to, than if I would have done more just to prove that I could.

In saving a bit of my energy I was able to teach my Nia class the next morning with renewed and full energy.  It was a great class.  So again, I was so glad I listened to what I always encourage my Nia and yoga students to do.

Now, I am not saying not to push yourself, I am just saying that there might be times when it is necessary to do less than you are capable of and that is ok.  I think you do more for your body, mind, emotions, and spirit if you respect your needs.  I have a feeling this is not new information to you, that is why I started out this post with “remember”.  However, it is one thing to know something and to actually do it.  As I said, before class I told myself to be mellow and then once in class I didn’t listen to myself at first.  I understand how easy it is to get caught up in the moment of doing, but with some modalities, like Nia and yoga, they are mindful practices.  A great exercise in a mindful practice is to do it mindfully, which could mean doing less.  Don’t be afraid to listen to your body intelligence.

Have you ever needed to do less in an exercise class?  Did you?  Did you have to keep reminding yourself?

Opening Up The Back With A Stability Ball

Posted by terrepruitt on October 15, 2015

You might have read a few of my post where I say that my back is bothering me.  Well, one way I relieve the pain is by rolling it out on a foam roller.  I wrote about that in my post Rolled Out My Back Pain.  A bit ago, I did that method and it was not working.  I kept trying it and trying it.  It didn’t make sense that my back was not “cracking” back into place.  If you have ever had a pain, especially back pain, it might have had you thinking about it.  As you go through the day, it draws your attention because, well, it hurts.  So I was thinking about it and trying to examine it from a sensation perspective.  As I moved through the day it would bother me.  I began to get the feeling that it was compressed.  Whether my bones were compressing against each other causing the pain or the bones were pressing on a nerve or something, I don’t know.  In fact it has been so long ago that this happened, I don’t even remember what it felt like EXACTLY.  But my sense was that it was compressed.  That would have explained why rolling on it, trying to crack it and compress it more was NOT working.  It was not relieving the pain.  So then I thought, what if I expand it?  What if I open it up?  Ideally, an inversion table would be great!  But, I don’t have that.  I remember one time I tried hanging off of our breakfast room table but it is difficult to relax doing that.  The idea that the table is going to flip over does not help me relax.  I decided to try my stability ball.

It is a little smaller than would be optimum, but it works.  It takes a lot of concentration to be able to relax the upper part of my back – because that is where it felt jammed up – and not go so far as to allow my head to rest on the ground.  My stability ball is not that big.  I had bought a big one, but I traded it with my co-worker (at the time) because the one she bought was smaller.  The ideal size for a stability ball when you plan on doing exercises on it, is to be able to sit comfortably on it with feet on the ground and your thighs parallel to the ground.  Well, my knees were below my hips on the big one and her knees were higher than her hips and the switch allowed us the proper size.  So mine is perfect for sitting on and doing exercise, but it is not so great to lie prone on.

I did post a stretch where I lie on it on my back, Stability Ball Stretch.  Mine is a good size for that.  It is a good size for everything else, like I said, it is the right size, but just kinda small for hanging over it face down.

But it worked.  My back didn’t need to be cracked with pressure it needed to be opened up.  So now when I get a sense that my back is getting out of whack, I sleep with my roller.  I have a round one and a half round one.  But if my back hurts before I try the sleep relief, then I hang over the ball.  If that doesn’t work, then I roll on the foam roller.  To begin with, I try to be very careful because I don’t want to be in pain.  My wonderful friend that helped me with my back is gone so I need to make sure I don’t get to the point of needing her help.  I need to be able to “fix” it myself.  And not letting it get out of adjustment is the best help.

As I mentioned in my foam roller post, I am not recommending anyone do this because I don’t know your particular back situation . . . so I can’t say if this would be good for you or if it would help.  But I am saying, “Ahhhhhhhhhh!”  It helps me.  It is a different sensation than hanging over from the hips and letting your head help stretch your back.  The ball rounding out the back really seems to open it up.  And whatever was going on in my back, that did the trick!

Do you have a stability ball?  What do you use it for?

If You Qualify You Can Get An “Aid-In-Dying-Drug” in CA Now

Posted by terrepruitt on October 6, 2015

Yesterday, Monday, October 05, 2015, the Governor of California signed ABX2-15 the End of Life Option Act into law.  So California joins Oregon, Washington, and Vermont in having a law that makes taking your life under the letter of the law, not a crime.  It allows people who have been deemed mentally competent and terminally ill to get a prescription of an “Aid-in-dying drug”.  The law will expire in 10 years.  I am sure that ten years from now things will have changed and there will need to be revisions if not an entirely different law.  But for now we have the End of Life Option Act.

“This bill, until January 1, 2026, would enact the End of Life Option Act authorizing an adult who meets certain qualifications, and who has been determined by his or her attending physician to be suffering from a terminal disease, as defined, to make a request for a drug prescribed pursuant to these provisions for the purpose of ending his or her life. The bill would establish the procedures for making these requests. The bill would also establish specified forms to request an aid-in-dying drug, under specified circumstances, an interpreter declaration to be signed subject to penalty of perjury, thereby creating a crime and imposing a state-mandated local program, and a final attestation for an aid-in-dying drug. This bill would require specified information to be documented in the individual’s medical record, including, among other things, all oral and written requests for an aid-in-dying drug.”

An adult can qualify if “all of the following conditions are satisfied:

(1) The individual’s attending physician has diagnosed the individual with a terminal disease.
(2) The individual has voluntarily expressed the wish to receive a prescription for an aid-in-dying drug.
(3) The individual is a resident of California and is able to establish residency through any of the following means:
(A) Possession of a California driver license or other identification issued by the State of California.
(B) Registration to vote in California.
(C) Evidence that the person owns or leases property in California.
(D) Filing of a California tax return for the most recent tax year.
(4) The individual documents his or her request pursuant to the requirements set forth in Section 443.3.
(5) The individual has the physical and mental ability to self-administer the aid-in-dying drug.
(b) A person shall not be considered a “qualified individual” under the provisions of this part solely because of age or disability.
(c) A request for a prescription for an aid-in-dying drug under this part shall be made solely and directly by the individual diagnosed with the terminal disease and shall not be made on behalf of the patient, including, but not limited to, through a power of attorney, an advance health care directive, a conservator, health care agent, surrogate, or any other legally recognized health care decisionmaker.”

And “An individual seeking to obtain a prescription for an aid-in-dying drug pursuant to this part shall submit two oral requests, a minimum of 15 days apart, and a written request to his or her attending physician. The attending physician shall directly, and not through a designee, receive all three requests required pursuant to this section.”  And there is a list that the request must meet, including having two witnesses.

There is a list of things the doctors must do and are not allowed to do.  There are stipulations regarding insurance and insurance companies.  The act states that anyone involved will not be committing a crime (as long as they follow all the rules), but that the person must be administer the prescription themselves.

This still would have not helped my mom after being admitted to the hospital because the two requests that are required must be at least 15 days apart.  She probably couldn’t have swallowed pills.  Perhaps she could have crushed them  and put the in her feeding tube . . . if she had it . . . I don’t remember.  But, again, it is the timing, the 30 days.  But, I am sure this will help a lot of people die with dignity and not have to suffer through some of the medical procedures that sometimes take place at the end of someone’s life.

There is a website that has information on all states and the laws.  There might be more than one, but Death with Dignity is the one I am familiar with.  http://www.deathwithdignity.org/advocates/national

The information I have in this post was copied from the California Legislative Information website. https://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=201520162AB15

Duh, Blocking The Sun Really Keeps Things Cool

Posted by terrepruitt on October 3, 2015

As we all know, when we block the sun from coming in it helps reduce the heat.  I mean there are a lot of us that have those shades for our cars.  So, I know this is not new to anyone, but I really cannot believe how much this has helped keep our house cool.  You may have read here on my blog that we adopted two cats in July and they had ringworm.  In order to keep it from getting all over the house and to keep it contained, we kept the cats locked up for over 30 days in one room.  The room they were locked up in happens to be the hottest room in the house.  One, it is upstairs and upstairs is where the heat rises to.  And two, it is in a section of the house that gets the sun for most of the day from both sides.  AND the windows happen to be on both those sides.  So it was when the cats were in quarantine that we started putting up things in the window to help block the sun.  It really helps with reducing the heat.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueIn the cats room at first I used my pop up shades from my car.  Many of us use the shades in the car because we know it helps keep the car cooler.  So it only makes sense that using the same thing or something to block the sun will help keep the house cooler.  But once the cats were out of the quarantine I wanted my shades back for my car.  So we started just using some cardboard we had in the garage.

As I said, I know this is not new to anyone, but seriously, I am happily surprised at how well it worked in the rest of the house.  My office, the upstairs room, really gets hot no matter.  The pop up car shades really helped.  So does the cardboard.  We put the cardboard in between the blinds and the windows.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueSince it worked so well upstairs I started doing it in the kitchen where the windows are on the same walls as the room upstairs.  Wow!  It really made a difference in the temperature in the kitchen.  We just move the cardboard from one window to the other as the sun shifts and whew!  It is amazing.

Prior to this past week, we had been having a couple of weeks of really hot weather and I had been dreading it.  But when the days actually were here it didn’t seem as hot because of the shade.  I am amazed that we had not done that sooner.  It is really quite silly because the curtains in the kitchen window aren’t even really curtains they are just sheer things that only go up half the window.

Putting the cardboard up does keep me from seeing the hummingbirds during the day, but that is ok.  We take it down during the “wartime” when the hummingbirds are battling it out in the evening.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueSince we don’t have air conditioning this little step of blocking the windows really helps us stay cool.  There are plenty of other areas that the cats can look out from, but who am I kidding, they sleep all day anyway.

I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you reading this are just going crazy thinking “why don’t you just get real curtains or blackout curtains”.  Well, since the extra blocking out of the sun helps keep the house so cool, we might look into getting some actual blackout window treatments.  I mean that would make more sense than putting up cardboard.  But then again it is only during the hot days that we need that additional heat blocking help . . . so we will see.

Do you have heavy curtains to block out the sun/heat?  Do you have blinds or curtains?  Have you ever just put something up in the window to help keep the heat out?

Sound And Common Business Ideas

Posted by terrepruitt on October 1, 2015

Recently I attended a Business Training type of workshop.  It was specifically for women.  The trainer feels that women – for many reasons – could use business training specifically for woman.  She didn’t get into explanations regarding her reasons, but some that have been tossed about before are things like, some woman are challenged in business because they are mothers/wives . . . just like any working woman, time used for work is time taken away from the family so they may feel guilty.  Plus . . . business is a “man’s world”.  Often times women are not taken as seriously as a man.  Some women have a difficult time stating their worth.  Some women are inclined to help so they feel “bad” charging for their services.  Those are just some reasons I’ve heard before.  Perhaps one or some of them are why this workshop was strictly for women.  It was a nice workshop.  The woman who presented it was very fun and had a lot of good information.  But, if you have taken the Nia White Belt Intensive, most of the same information was in that.  If you have taken any type of certification and it was a good one, then they would have covered the same type of business information that was in this workshop.  But if you have never taken anything before then it was a great one.

The first thing all the business trainings I’ve taken say is to diversify.  So in the context of Nia, the idea is to not just teach Nia classes.  But to do Nia Workshops, Nia retreats, Nia personal training, Nia sessions, Nia talks/webinars, in other words the idea is you have this great gift to share – don’t hold back.  And for something like Nia there really is so much to it, it can’t be all shared in just the dance exercise classes.  This training had to do with yoga, so she was using examples pretty much the same.  You could do all the same things; classes, workshops, retreats, sessions, webinars . . . etc.

The one thing that was different about this workshop was that the steps she recommended that needed to be taken she aligned with Goddesses.  So with the first step she said to “claim your power and passion with the Goddess Durga”.  Which according to the first thing on the internet Durga “is the root cause of creation, preservation and annihilation”.  Since, I am not going to be using Goddess in my business or my life, I didn’t take many notes that had to do with the Goddess part.  But this step was also the part that was connected to finding your niche.  Again, in context, there are a lot of different types of yoga so find one that is your passion.  Or find something that can complement yoga and concentrate on that.  With your passion you will be able to connect to people.  So let’s say you love to crochet, you could have a yoga crochet class (and workshop, retreat, sessions, webinar, etc.).

The next step was to release fears and doubts (with another Goddess).  And during this one we did a really great exercise.  She had us speaking from a place of fears and doubts, then she had us speaking form a place of confidence.  We all could really tell the difference.  This was a great (and very important) reminder for me.

The next step was to create your offering (with another Goddess) and she shared ideas on that.  She shared actual testimonies or information from some of her clients.  Step four was marketing (with another Goddess).  As you probably know there are many places to market.  With social media the ways to do it are encouraging.  So much of it can be free.

She shared some mistakes that people make, like no marketing or not doing enough, or boring marketing.  Not diversifying, not having a plan, trying to reinvent the wheel, and trying to do it on your own and not ask for help.

Like I said, it was good.  It was great if you have never heard any of it before.  As you may have read before on my blog, Nia has awesome training and business is one of the 13 principles in the Nia White Belt so they cover these things.  These are typical business ideas, attaching Goddesses to them, was new to me.

This workshop was just a taste of a longer more in-depth workshop.  The weekend one sounded amazing and fun, but my abundance doesn’t come from Goddesses, so I wasn’t interested.

I do have other things I want to share, but this post is long enough.  In another post I’ll share some things that this workshop didn’t cover but I think are good things to think about if you want to teach classes (like yoga or Nia).

If you have a certification in something did the training cover any business training?  Are you familiar with any of these business ideas?

Generosity And Compassion Burns Hotter Than Wildfires

Posted by terrepruitt on September 15, 2015

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueSo you may have heard about the fires in California.  It is that time of year.  There are always fires in California.  There is a fire season, just like there is a tornado season and a hurricane season.  It happens.  The problem with this year is that we are in a bad drought.  The fact that we have no water to spare is what makes it so bad.  I did also hear that one of the fires – there are hundreds of fires burning right now, twelve of them are being called major fires – is the worse that we have had in a very long time.  I keep reading stories of people losing their homes and animals.  But I am also reading a lot of really nice stories.  Have you seen any of those?

There is one ranch who has offered to house people.  Of course, I can’t find the original post that I read, but there are others who are making offers.  Here is a picture of one of the others who are offering a place for people to stay.

There is an organization, Safer Sonoma Action For Equine Rescue, that is securing hay donations and a place to store it:

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique“UPDATE: We have a huge warehouse arranged by Brenna Sullivan at the Farm Burearu (no relation…we don’t think) The first semi is arriving mid-morning and will have a squeeze there to unload. We have dispensed over $1000 from the Lakeport stores to folks with multiple horses on their property, just today. We are aiming for long term support here so people are not having to make sad decisions down the road after all the hoop la is over. THANK YOU ONE AND ALL for your participation. Suppose to rain…..

UPDATE Tues 2pm: WE HAVE STAGING. In a few hours we will have the final ok on a main storage area for long term storage of hay donations; secure and in Kelseyville. Then let the trucks roll in!!

UPDATE Tues 15 am: SAFER would like to start a Page on our Website to help those Fire Victims that have lost precious horses, pets and other animals to post their pictures and stories of love and loss. Send your pics and stories to info@saferhorse.com. In this way we can all support, in this small way, our neighbors in the grief that is a part of loving all creatures great and small.

.  . . .

OUR PRAYERS GO OUT THE PEOPLE AND ANIMALS THAT ARE LOSING THEIR HOMES – AND THEIR LIVES in this horrible fire season.”

One bridal store gifted a wedding dress to a woman whose house burned down.  In addition to a free wedding gown, they called wedding vendors and received donations for everything so she and her groom can proceed with getting married.  Now THAT is a bridal store takes care of their brides – Starlet Bridal and Prom!

There is so much devastation, it is so heartwarming to see so many people jump to the aide of others.

Australia is even sending over 71 Fire Fighters.  WOW!

Animals that have been separated from their families are being reunited.Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique

It is all so sad.  I am clinging to the good stuff people are doing as my heart goes out to all that have been affected.

Clean, Fresh, De-Fungified, And Smelling Good

Posted by terrepruitt on September 10, 2015

So I bet you have seen multiple posts or articles about cleaning with vinegar.  It is a disinfectant, an anti-bacterial, and an anti-fungal.  Some articles say white vinegar is good enough some say you have to use unfiltered organic apple cider vinegar.  You may have also read about our recent situation in which we had an invader in the form of the fungus called ringworm.  Well, a quick summary, we got two one year old kitties who had ringworm.  Thankfully this was suspected the first week they were here so their contamination of the house was kept to a bare minimum.  But I still wanted to disinfect everything I could.  Since animals were involved I wanted to use non-toxic products.  I also employed the use of two other products.  I am going to keep all three of these products in my arsenal of cleaning supplies.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueSo as I said, I used vinegar on many, many, many things.  I really don’t care for the smell, but it is safe for all types of surfaces and can be ingested by cats.

The second product is simply diluted bleach.  One part bleach for ten parts water.  While bleach isn’t something ingestible, it does a great job of cleaning.  I used it on every surface that could tolerate it.  So not as many as the vinegar.  I used the bleach more for things that were on my shelves so they were taken out of the room and the cats didn’t even have access to them.  I also very much like the smell of bleach.  It makes me feel as if things are clean.

In my search for things non-toxic I came across EarthScents.  The product description said:

The product description said:
–Use Terra Firma anti-fungal, natural all purpose cleaner to clean all hard surfaces. No harsh chemicals or synthetic fragrances.
–Aromatherapy scents
–100% natural, earth friendly, bio-degradable, septic safe, and safe for people, pets, and the planet.
–Ideal for those who are allergy prone, sensitive to chemical cleaners, or for those who are concerned about the variety and mixture of harsh chemicals used in their home and around their family.

Its ingredients are:  Purified water, tea tree oil, grapefruit seed extract, glycerin, and rosemary therapeutic essential oil.

It smells great.  I bought the Rosemary scent.  I didn’t use it as much as the vinegar because it says it can’t be used on wood, so I used the vinegar.  But this cleaner is GREAT on mirrors.  I am considering purchasing it just to clean windows and mirrors.  It is great.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueOh and another mention that I discovered during our situation is Pure Citrus.  We had two cats locked in one room for almost 40 days.  During that period there were a couple of hot spells.  So lets just say that it got kind of smelly in there, so I wanted an air freshener that I wouldn’t be afraid of landing on things and being sprayed around the cats.  So I found this product on Amazon.  I really like it.  I purchased “Orange Air Freshener”.  It smells like oranges.  The ingredients listed say, “Pure Citrus contains 100% natural, delightfully fragrant oils found in fresh oranges.”  Since I liked the product so much I took a chance and bought a different scent, the Lavender Air Freshener.  WOW!  I really like it!  So, if you are ever in the market for an air freshener, I would recommend Pure Citrus, the Orange Air Freshener and the Lavender Air Freshener.  I don’t know about any of the other scents.

So, I believe that vinegar, the bleach dilute, and the Spray fresh helped me get our house fungus free.  At least I feel like these products cleaned it up!  And with the air freshener it smells really nice.

What do you use to clean your house?  What do you use to make it smell nice?

Double The Goodness

Posted by terrepruitt on September 1, 2015

What better way to start a month than with a Goodie Jar check in?  Any of you still doing a goodie jar or any version of one?  A Goodie Jar or a Good Things Jar is where you make a note of a good thing and put it in the jar to read later.  That is the basics so how you go about it is up to you.  The possibilities are endless.  You could decide upon guidelines on what is allowed in the jar or just put whatever you want.  My idea is whatever is a “good thing” that makes you smile.  You can assign yourself a schedule as in “you have to do it once a day/week/month”.  Or you can do it whenever you experience something that makes you smile.  When you read them is also something unique to you.  Our Goodie Jar is read on December 31st.  It is kind of nice since we are past the age of going out and getting crazy.  We usually are home all night and so this is a little tradition, a way of celebrating.  Now, many of you, perhaps people who frequently read my blog, already know about this because I think I am on my third year of doing it, but there are many people out there that don’t know about it.  And for a lot of people it is a good way to keep focused on the good things in life.  There is always something good so it is nice to have a way to keep that at the forefront.  So, I am happy to report that I have had to go back to using my first goodie jar.  But that is in addition to the new container I had moved, too.  We now have two “Goodie” locations!

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueHow awesome is that?  Our Good Things filled up one container so we had to move it to another one!  That is good stuff.  Granted some of our things are full sized pieces of paper.  John used that as documentation for one or two good things.  Plus we use all types of paper and all types of sizes.  There are also a few tickets in there.  So they take up a lot of space, but still!  A lot of good things.

There are always good things to say about the Nia classes because of the fabulous students that come to class.  In fact, as I type this I was reminded that the attendance I had at this past Nia class on Sunday at the NW YMCA was the largest I have ever had.  So that is going in the good things jar.  That was a good thing!

My yoga classes are a consistent good thing, too.  There seems to be a lot of good revolving around those, too.  Currently, yoga in the park.  So nice to be out in the gorgeous day . . . even when the lawn maintenance people are there.

Our cats are doing well.  We decided to stop the medicine for the little cat.  We had three days left and we decided that she was just getting, too upset and it was just causing too much stress in the household.  So we stopped that.  She has yet to realize that evening time is not “torture” time.  But she will get there.  I even got an exposed belly and purrs today.  The whole situation around us getting the cats and all that mess was really a great time to utilize the goodie jar because that is when I need it.  When a happy situation turns to muck, it helps to have a process in place to help concentrate and focus on the good things.  So we are rolling along.

So, what about you?  Are you doing a Goodie Jar?  Do you have a way to help you stay focused on the Good Things?  How is it going?

Scratchers

Posted by terrepruitt on August 29, 2015

A cat came into our lives in 2000.  So we were blessed to have had her as our cat for fourteen years.  She had a few scratching posts and things to scratch on.  Well, she had two scratching posts, an area where cats are supposed to scratch on her tower, and another horizontal carpeted scratcher.  She never really scratched anywhere else except when she wasn’t feeling well.  That is how I knew she wasn’t feeling well.  When she got sick she started scratching on the bottom steps in the stair case.  Our stairs are split so she had two steps to scratch up.  The bottom two steps are all torn up.  Lovely.  I didn’t know about cardboard scratchers until The Dancing Cat came into town.  They introduced me to the cardboard things that the cats scratch on.  If I had know about them perhaps they would have saved our stairs.

What great things these are.  And Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Techniquewith our cats, they already were used to using them.  The reason I knew they would be good is that I had seen one, if not both, Smokey and Esmeralda, use them while at the lounge/cafe.  They are pretty cool.  I like ’em.

They make a mess because it quickly becomes shredded cardboard particles all over, but still so much nicer than shredded couch, shredded carpet, shredded curtains, you know what I mean.  I do hope that the cats continue to use and enjoy them.

Our cats have one that has a ball on the outer edge.  They like that one, too.  The cardboard in that one is much tougher so it does not shred as easily.  They seem to like to sit on it more than scratch it.  Go figure.  There are some pretty fancy ones out there, for sale.  One looks like a piece of art to me, but I don’t know how long that would last and I would rather buy A LOT of little disposable ones than have one beautiful one that I had to discard.

I am thankful for these scratchers, the cats use them all the time and I am convinced they save our belongings from being shredded.

Do you know about these cardboard scratchers?  Do you have any if them for your cats?

Losing Lens Flexibility

Posted by terrepruitt on August 25, 2015

Recently I hosted a Nia class taught by a guest teacher.  It was a on a Sunday.  It happened to be one of the hottest days we have had.  So I thought I would allow myself to be a little cooler by wearing my contacts and not my glasses.  And by “cooler” I mean temperature-wise, tee hee!  Having glasses on my face makes me a tad bit warmer than when I don’t have glasses on.  I hadn’t worn my contacts in a long time.  Turns out a VERY long time.  When I went to read, I couldn’t.  And on top of that I kept looking down under my glasses (the ones I wasn’t wearing because I was wearing my contacts).  I also couldn’t write.  I mean I could but it wasn’t very well because I couldn’t see.  It was kind of funny, but very frustrating.  I know that it happens, I know that as we age we lose our ability to read up close, but it was really weird, because without my contacts lenses I can see up close, fine.  I can read up close without my glasses on, I have to look below them, push them up, or take them off.  So when my contacts made me a far-sighted person, it was so weird to lose the ability to see close.  I mean it made sense because my glasses do the same thing, it just didn’t dawn on me that my contacts would do the same thing and that I couldn’t push them up or easily take them off in order to see.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia at the San Jose Community Centers, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex City of San Jose, San Jose Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueI am so used to wearing my glasses that the first time I stopped dancing during the Nia class, to mop off my face I grabbed for my glasses (the ones I wasn’t wearing because I was wearing my contacts) to push them up so I could towel off my face.  Funny.  It was a funny experience.  Kind of frustrating because no matter how far or close I moved the – whatever I was trying to read – I couldn’t really see.  This wasn’t an issue during the class, but afterwards it was.  I actually borrowed by husband’s glasses for a second, just to see if they would help — they did.

Losing our ability to see close is part of the aging process.   It is called presbyopia and is actually a change in the eye’s focusing ability.  The American Optometric Association website says:  “Losing the ability to read the newspaper or see the cell phone numbers may seem to have occurred abruptly. Actually, these changes have been occurring gradually since childhood. But up until now, your eyes have had adequate focusing power to allow you to see clearly for reading and close work. Now your eyes no longer have enough focusing power for clear and comfortable near vision tasks.”  This is “the result of the lens inside the eye becoming less flexible.”  The effects of this loss of flexibility starts being noticed about the age of 40.  The condition just continues to worsen as we age.

There are many ways that this can be addressed or corrected, from glasses to surgery.  I want to get new glasses.  I don’t remember the last time I got new glasses.  I am thinking I don’t want bifocals or progressives.  I think I am ok with just looking under, pushing them all the way up, or taking them off.  But we will see.

For those of you who are at this point or beyond, what have you opted to do?  Anyone like progressives?
