A Quick Switcheroo

Posted by terrepruitt on December 16, 2020

A couple of months ago (already) I asked my hubby if I could make some permanent changes to the house. I wanted to hang curtains in the middle of our house so I could use them as a backdrop for my classes I teach via Zoom. I feel somewhat odd having our stuff as a backdrop when I am teaching. It also seems a little easier for people to see me when there is a plain background, and stuff is not competing for the eye. Some people get distracted by so much stuff in the background. I love having a home “studio”. Granted I am not a big fan of having the curtains up all the time and having to constantly move a lot of furniture. And, I am thinking I am not alone in the sense that we never get away from work because our homes are our offices/studios. But I do really like having a more “studio” LOOKING place with a plain backdrop and not our entertainment center and/or closet.

Laughing because photo was not taking when I pressed button!

The cats’ cat tower is still a part of the studio setting except now, when the Christmas tree is in that spot. But I am not going to move the tower daily. It is a home studio after all and people seem to understand.

We hung the curtains with a curtain hanging wire. In regards to curtains, I need something LONG and light (in weight) so I couldn’t buy drapes. I also didn’t want to spend as much as drapes cost. I also couldn’t find drapes that were just plain off-white or white. I ended up buying shower curtains. They are not plastic, but not entirely fabric. They are light and easy to tie up. They are long enough, but I need three to cover the space.

I like the rings because they fit through the rivets and the curtains hang nicer. It is easier to move the rings past the holder in the middle of the wire. But then I decided I wanted to use the hooks with clips so I ordered more hooks with clips, but the ones I purchased (that look somewhat similar to the ones that came with the wire) are sideways. So that doesn’t work. Plus I am experiencing the hooks come off the wire if there is any lift in the curtain (like when opening it or closing it) and when the curtain is tied back the hooks get all tangled. I am sure it looks odd with one curtain having white rings and the other two having hooks, but . . . . that’s the way it is for now.

It’s a quick switcheroo from living room to studio, I have to move furniture around, but I had to do that anyway. Setting up the monitor is much easier now because I have it on a rolling stand. So I don’t have to lift it off the floor and put it on the table all the time. Not a fan of having the monitor and all its cords as a permanent fixture in the living room, but . . . I AM a fan of being able to teach!!!

I have a great group of students that have been very consistent since we started Zooming. They are amazing. They show up every week and are very understanding when there are technical glitches . . . mine, theirs, whomever’s. We have fun.

I feel the home studio is better for students and I really appreciate my husband allowing me to take over yet another room in the house!  Still amazing me, the stuff we are all doing at this time.

Have you had to create a home office or a studio?  What did you do?  What is your background?

Covering The Camera

Posted by terrepruitt on December 14, 2020

It is a widely known fact that our devices, especially certain applications, listen to us. So, I don’t necessarily trust that my camera is not on when I don’t want it to be. I like to be unable to see that it is able to take pictures. In addition to my phone, I use two devices with cameras, a laptop and a monitor to teach my yoga, Nia, and stretch classes via Zoom. On both the laptop and the monitor I used to have a folded piece of paper taped over the camera. I had assumed there were devices that would block the camera, but I assumed they were “big” and “bulky”. I was thinking that whatever could cover the camera would not allow the laptop to shut properly. But finally when my piece of paper fell off the last time I decided to actually shop – online, of course. And, of course, I found something on Amazon.

So tiny that you could put it on a phone to block that camera. I thought it would work on a laptop and monitor if it worked on a phone. So I ordered a 3 pack for $5.99.

They are so tiny, they work great. I don’t have one on my phone, but I put one on the laptop and the monitor. They can hardly be seen – I had a difficult time taking a picture of it. I love them. It is the peel and stick type of thing. I don’t know how long it will last, but I have an extra one since I only used two. They are cool. It is so much better than having a paper that falls off. As I mentioned the taped paper would fall off often, when I took the paper off and put it somewhere on the monitor so I could use it when I was done, it would fall off. I was constantly “losing” it. This device is just a little slide.

The ones I bought are oval shaped, but they have rectangles. There are even some that have a red dot to indicate something – either open or closed, I don’t remember which, but that sounds like it would be handy. But I only saw the dot on the rectangle kind and I liked the oval ones, they looked smaller.

I know there is one laptop . . . at least there used to be a commercial on TV that showed you could visible cover the camera.  I don’t know if they still make that or if other laptops have that.  My husband has an external camera that has a little piece of plastic that flips over the camera. So . . . with all of these camera covers available I know I am not the only one that likes to visibly cover the camera.

How do you feel? Do you see the need for camera covers?

Decorations Are Different For 2020 Christmas

Posted by terrepruitt on December 11, 2020

With our living room as my studio for Nia, yoga, and stretch I’ve had to make some adjustments that have displaced some of my Christmas decorations. I’ve had to move some furniture around and my Zoom backdrop is in the way of a table that I normally put up to display a number of Christmas decorations. So . . . I’ve been rearranging things a bit. I just put the small bottle light up tonight, and I thought that it would be the piece that allowed me to be at peace with this arrangement, but I am not sure about it yet. I will have to sit with it. I have still been up and down (there are two ladders involved) decorating so we will see once I have a chance to actually observe it. My original vision was for multi-colored strings of lights. I didn’t have them, but might be able to scrounge them up. Maybe THAT will do the trick.

Christmas decorations continue for Friday Photos in December.

How are you doing so far?

Enough Stress

Posted by terrepruitt on December 9, 2020

I feel like there is a lot of pressure during the Holidays. I hear so many people exclaim this time of year is so stressful. Just recently I had a conversation with a friend who couldn’t sleep and she noticed that the same thing happens every year. I get it. And this year, this year could be so much worse in terms of amount of stress. There are so many ADDED stressors. We each have our own “regular” Holiday stress and we each have our own stressors that are added because of the world situation, so I am not going to list them because I don’t want to bring up one you may not have thought of! 🙂 You may have seen a few of my posts in the past about how I was trying to reduce the stress during the Holidays. I believe that there are different types of stress. Two examples of types are things we can’t control and the ones we can . . . perhaps even the stressors we cause or add ourselves. I know those were the ones I was trying to reduce. Life is stressful and this year is a doozy so why not try to alleviate some of the ones we can. I was thinking . . . .

Perhaps this year might be the year when your friends and/or family draw names. Instead of the regular everyone-buying-something-for-everyone, maybe just focusing on one person might help relieve some stress. It could also include maybe some conversations and building of relationship with that person. Maybe you get to talk to them to see what the want or what they like. To me, right now, it is precious to speak with people since I am not actually going out and seeing people. Some friends had made comments to me about how difficult shopping is this year because of the situations and restrictions. A lot of people don’t like shopping online . . . they like to be in stores to SHOP and that might not be possible this year. So buying for one person might be the answer to helping lessen the stress.

Seems like the stereo-typical stress of having to be with family is already eliminated, but for some not being able to be with family is causing stress. I know many people might be Zoomed out, but I still think it is still a great way to gather without being there in person. Whatever you regularly do, do that . . . if you dress up, dress up. If you have ugly sweater gatherings, do that. Try to keep the connection with friends and family but keep it as stress free as possible.

Maybe not having the big dinner because it is just going to be the few in your household, so maybe skip a dish or two. Maybe decorating less. Look at what causes you stress — what you can control — and see if you can change the pattern. Whatever you can do to help alleviate stress in this stressful time of year, might be great this year.

I am a big believer that this time of year should be fun and joyful so I think less stress is best.

Also, this is a difficult one for many of us, get enough sleep. It is a fact that it is more difficult to deal with stress when we have not had enough sleep. So work on that. This is a big one for me as I tend to stay up late anyway and turning off my Christmas tree to go to bed is one less day I have to enjoy it so I stay up late.

Also . . . yeah, another one . . . eat good. Avoiding sugar  is something that is really difficult this time of year . . . . although there might actually be less sweets to tempt you this year if you are not going into the office with a break room table full of treats.  Sugar is not a friend to the immune system and right now our immune systems can use all the help they can get.

Stress does not help with sleep nor the immune system so it is somewhat cyclical.

This time of year is stressful. Especially this year with all that we have gone through. We are exhausted, tired, and stressed. Now some of these things are not things that people readily admit soooooo they might not even be identified. This year we’re going through stuff. So think about what you can do to help relieve the stress.

Anything you can cross of your stress-causing list?

Oh, Yin Yoga could help you with stress . . . having a free class Friday, 12.11.20 – info at http://www.helpyouwell.com/

Wrapping The Wall Hangings

Posted by terrepruitt on December 7, 2020

Oh, I am so surprised with myself.  I don’t know how I missed this ALL these years.  I love when restaurants, offices, etc have their wall hangings wrapped.  It looks so festive.  I always marvel at the time it must have taken someone to wrap the hangings.  And yet I have never done it myself.  WHAT?  I don’t get it.  How could I have missed this opportunity all these years?  What a great way to decorate and re-use/recycle wrapping paper.  I just don’t get it.  This year I was looking at my purple and blue plates (don’t match red and green) that are in my plate holder and I was trying to think of something to do with them.  I have Christmas dishes, but we didn’t get them down this year and I am ok with that because we have so many other things to decorate with.  Then it dawned on me . . . I could just wrap the plates.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia online, San Jose Virtual classes, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, Nia Technique, Yin Yoga, stretch classes, online exercise, Zoom classes, virtual yoga, City of San Jose online exercise, live classes via Zoom, Nia White Belt training via ZoomYAY!  Now several things; my hubby let me do something this year he doesn’t normally let me do so I was so excited I didn’t give a lot of thought to wrapping.  I figured we are not buying a lot that needs to be wrapped this year so why have the boxes with the wrapping supplies down in the way.  So I just grabbed some wrapping boxes and the bag of “to be shredded for bagged gifts” paper.  So I didn’t have a lot of paper that would match the bows I hang on the plate holder.  So it is not the best paper, but the idea was that no one would see it.  Ha!  Now you are . . . but oh well.

In case you were wondering what I got to do that was so exciting to me – you are not going to think it is exciting, but I was sooooo happy – I will tell you.  I got to pull stuff out of boxes and then put the boxes back up.  Normally we bring all the boxes in the house and then I empty them and they stay in the house until will put them back up.  And usually we put them all back up at the same time.  So to be able to empty some and not even bring them in the house – such a relief.  The amount of stress that alleviates is amazing.  May sound silly to you, but I was happy.

Anyway . . . this post is me being excited about recycling wrapping paper to decorate and to have a “new” decoration”.  I can change the paper every year.  Well, not really because I often put my Christmas china up there.  But this year . . . . a new decoration!

Well, it is December.  So that means a lot of posts – A LOT – about the Christmas tree (wait till you see the skinny guy we got this year), the decorations, and the season.  Yeah, still celebrating and grasping at the Joy of the Season!

How about you?

Persimmon Pork

Posted by terrepruitt on December 2, 2020

I have a persimmon chicken recipe and this is basically the same thing. Do keep in mind with chicken or pork that you need to cook it thoroughly. And lately the size of the chicken breasts we have been getting take a considerable amount of time to cook, whereas the pork seems to be thinner than what we used to get. So check the meat for correct doneness.

This is also a recipe “idea”. I can’t give exact amounts and measurements, but you can prepare it to your tastes.

4/5 boneless pork chops
salt
fruit flavored balsamic vinegar
shallots
2/3 persimmons
cinnamon
nutmeg
2/3 persimmons
pepper if you would like

Salt both sides of the boneless pork chops then arrange them in your baking dish. Pour the vinegar over the pork, flip them so that both sides have been flavored with vinegar. Chop the shallots (1 or 2 is fine . . . depends on size) and put them over the pork. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg. Cut up the persimmons and spread them on top of the pork. Sprinkle with cinnamon and nutmeg.

Bake at 375° F. After about 10 minutes, take the dish out of the oven and flip the pork. If it needs more moisture add some more vinegar . . . you don’t want too much overpowering the persimmons. Arrange the persimmons back on top and around the pork, sprinkle a little more salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg then baked it until done.

Serve over fresh/raw greens or rice.

___________________________

I like Mission Fig Balsamic, but sometimes I don’t have that, so I use a sweet one, but not TOO sweet. I don’t want it to overpower the persimmons. And balsamic will so or even soy sauce, like I used with the chicken.

As I mentioned, I do this with chicken too . . . tis the season.

As I always ask . . . what do you do with persimmons?

And as usual I am getting a later start than I wanted. I was playing around with something on my website and time just slipped by. I even went down to start, but came back up to grab my phone for the recipe and 30 minutes later, I just put the pumpkin in. Then I got to thinking about all the recipes I like to cook this time of year. And I started thinking about all the recipes YOU like to cook this time of year. What are your favorite recipes that you like to cook this time of year?

I am going to list a few of mine here (with links) especially since I still have to try to fix my recipe page after WordPress BLOCKS came along.  (Ugh!)

So, again . . . . what about you?  What are the recipes you look forward to making this season?
