A couple of months ago (already) I asked my hubby if I could make some permanent changes to the house. I wanted to hang curtains in the middle of our house so I could use them as a backdrop for my classes I teach via Zoom. I feel somewhat odd having our stuff as a backdrop when I am teaching. It also seems a little easier for people to see me when there is a plain background, and stuff is not competing for the eye. Some people get distracted by so much stuff in the background. I love having a home “studio”. Granted I am not a big fan of having the curtains up all the time and having to constantly move a lot of furniture. And, I am thinking I am not alone in the sense that we never get away from work because our homes are our offices/studios. But I do really like having a more “studio” LOOKING place with a plain backdrop and not our entertainment center and/or closet.

Laughing because photo was not taking when I pressed button!
The cats’ cat tower is still a part of the studio setting except now, when the Christmas tree is in that spot. But I am not going to move the tower daily. It is a home studio after all and people seem to understand.
We hung the curtains with a curtain hanging wire. In regards to curtains, I need something LONG and light (in weight) so I couldn’t buy drapes. I also didn’t want to spend as much as drapes cost. I also couldn’t find drapes that were just plain off-white or white. I ended up buying shower curtains. They are not plastic, but not entirely fabric. They are light and easy to tie up. They are long enough, but I need three to cover the space.
I’ve gone back and forth on whether to use the rings that came with the curtains or the hooks with clips that came with the wire. I like the rings because they fit through the rivets and the curtains hang nicer. It is easier to move the rings past the holder in the middle of the wire. But then I decided I wanted to use the hooks with clips so I ordered more hooks with clips, but the ones I purchased (that look somewhat similar to the ones that came with the wire) are sideways. So that doesn’t work. Plus I am experiencing the hooks come off the wire if there is any lift in the curtain (like when opening it or closing it) and when the curtain is tied back the hooks get all tangled. I am sure it looks odd with one curtain having white rings and the other two having hooks, but . . . . that’s the way it is for now.
It’s a quick switcheroo from living room to studio, I have to move furniture around, but I had to do that anyway. Setting up the monitor is much easier now because I have it on a rolling stand. So I don’t have to lift it off the floor and put it on the table all the time. Not a fan of having the monitor and all its cords as a permanent fixture in the living room, but . . . I AM a fan of being able to teach!!!
I am really happy to be able to be teaching through all of this. I have a great group of students that have been very consistent since we started Zooming. They are amazing. They show up every week and are very understanding when there are technical glitches . . . mine, theirs, whomever’s. We have fun.
I feel the home studio is better for students and I really appreciate my husband allowing me to take over yet another room in the house! Still amazing me, the stuff we are all doing at this time.
Have you had to create a home office or a studio? What did you do? What is your background?

So I was out today visiting the studio I am going to teach at on Thursdays. I was out much longer than I had planned. Then I came home and worked on my site the rest of the day. I have been having to go through all the pages to take out all the old class information. I would repeat a lot of the information on many of the pages to help people be clear on the various classes that I was teaching. So now I am having to change all of that because after five years the program under which I taught for the City of San Jose has changed. I will be teaching Nia on Tuesdays and Nia on Thursday. The classes will be at different locations. The fees will be different. As I said in my last Wednesday post Out With The Old, In With The New.
The new place I will be teaching on Thursdays is right down the street from the other place, so that should be very convenient for the Nia and stretch students. I was able to keep the schedule the same . . . with the old program under the city we had Nia at 9:00 am and stretch class at 10:15. We are doing that at the new place. We will start January 10, 2019.
I am excited. As I said, I spent time visiting the studio and one of the owners, today, then spent the rest of the day updating my site. I need to give it a rest and come back and look at it with fresh eyes to edit it. And retry all the links. You are more than welcome to help me edit it . . . if you see something that is incorrect, please let me know!
Anyway . . . I have been re-doing my site instead of writing a blog post. So I thought I would share what is going on. And use another avenue of social media to let people know about the changes and the new location of the Thursday Nia class and stretch Class.
YAY!
Check out the information on my website!
Thursday Nia
Thursday Stretch
I hope to you see you in one some day!
Happy New Year!

I teach classes at a city community center. We are fortunate enough to have a dance studio at the community center. Even though Nia is non- to very low impact, it is important to dance on dance appropriate flooring. If you are going to a, let’s say a festival and planning on dancing on the pavement for a few hours one afternoon, that is fine, but if you are planning on going to an exercise class one to three times a week, the floor needs to be appropriate. We have a nice floor at the community center. It is in the dance studio which is right off of the front desk. A lot seems to happen in the rooms past the studio. I think the preschool or small children’s’ area is past the dance studio. The dance studio has two doors. It is so cute the number of small children that walk by and stop to look in at us. Some stop to watch. I think children are drawn to dance.
A couple of weeks ago, I looked up to see a small girl looking in at us. Then I saw a hand reach out to grab hers, and she pulled away because she wanted to stay and watch. She was mesmerized. Her eyes were big and she was just standing there completely still watching. Some kids start to move while they watch. All of them get wide-eyed when any of us make eye contact with them, but as soon as we say, “Hi!” or wave, the face breaks into a smile. So many want to join us.
I always want to stop the class to ask them what intrigues them. Is it just dancing in general? Is it that we are usually laughing and having fun? Is that the was are making noises? Could be they are attracted to the whooping or growling? Could be my wild tie-dyed shirts? Or the energy in the room? I don’t know. I often wish I could ask. Especially to that little one who was mesmerized and really did not want to be dragged away.
Sometimes it is really fun because there will be a line of them . . . like a whole class walking by so we get to wave a lot and we get a lot of waves back. Also, last week, we think a group was in line for the water fountain which is right outside the door. That was funny. Because we went, “WHOOO!” then we heard “WHOOO!” from the hall. So then we went, “WHOOWHOO!” and we got a “WHOOWHOO!” back. We were able to include them in our class via vocals for a couple of minutes. It was super funny.
Kids are so drawn to dance. You know, you’ve seen those videos of the little ones just dancing away to a song they hear in the store or in the car. They have not yet learned to be self-conscious of their movement or care what other people are thinking. They just hear the music and they move. It is so wonderful to witness. I wish we would never lose that.

The Special Nia Events that I held at the end of March were held at a dance studio in Campbell called Range of Motion. Well, the owner of the dance studio opened a store next door called Range of Wellness. It sells supplements in the form of vitamins, minerals, and protein powders. It has a few lotions and shampoos. It even has a few things for pets (treats, supplements, shampoos). When I was there completing business with the owner I noticed there was some essential oils on her desk. She just got them in. I picked up Crystal Breath and loved the way it smelled.
I didn’t even know what it claimed to do but I loved the way it smelled so I wanted it. I use my oils as aroma therapy. The “therapy” part can be loosely defined. I usually just go by the smell I feel like smelling at the moment. That is why I purchased the Crystal Breath without knowing its intent. It smells so good.
It is manufactured by a company new to me called Nature’s Fusion. The blend contains eucalyptus dives, laurel leaf, peppermint, ravensara, eucalyptus radiata, lemon, rosemary, tarragon, tea tree. The bottle does say is is a respiratory blend, which means nothing to me. It is somewhat “mentholatum-y”, so I thought it might help with clearing sinuses. The company’s website says:
“This blend opens pathways and increases clarity.
Clear breathing, odor control
Usage Methods: Apply to hands and breathe deeply, diffuse, rub in a 5% dilution on chest or upper lip
Research & Fun Facts
- Filling a room with Crystal Breath can be a great way to eliminate other odors.
- Apply to hands and breathe during intense activity or respiratory stress for open thoughts and increased clarity.
- Some people suffer from asthma, or exercise-induced asthma. During an asthma attack, the airways tighten and close, restricting air supply to the lungs. Drinking plenty of fluids, slowly warming up to physical activity, practicing active relaxation techniques, and breathing moist, warm air can help reduce dangerous attacks.
- In a pinch, Crystal Breath works as a topical deodorant. Dilute in water or alcohol and apply sparingly.”
I’d like to point out, the website does NOT say this essential oil blend is good for people with asthma. The website just has facts: “Some people suffer from asthma, or exercise-induced asthma. During an asthma attack, the airways tighten and close, restricting air supply to the lungs.” And then states what probably most asthma sites, doctors, and asthma suffers would recommend. This is an important thing to notice . . . this site is not making a claim regarding asthma, although it is claiming that applying it to hands will open thoughts and increase clarity.
I just like the way it smells. I have put it on my wrists to allow me to smell it as I breathe. I cannot attest to it opening my thoughts or increasing clarity, but I can say it makes me smile because l like the fragrance.
Since it is one of the few oils I have actually applied to my skin, I have bothered to add it to a candle to burn. I just dab some on my wrists. The other oils I don’t “wear”, I put drops in my candles. So I don’t know what the effect is in a burning candle.
So, there you have it, a new to me oil blend. What about you? Are you using essential oils? What blends do you like?

This week I met with a friend and she asked me, “So how do you come up with things to post on your blog?” It was very funny that she asked me that on that day because that day I was struggling to come up with something. It is funny how some days it is as if something to write about is RIGHT there and other days I can think about it from the moment I get up until the last minute and still be struggling. I am very particular about my posting schedule. There are blogs that I like to read and I will go to them and there is nothing. I will continue to go and there is nothing and after a week or two I forget to keep checking. I like to post on a schedule so if you come to my blog you know something will be here. But that is not always easy. Especially since my idea was to post something about health and fitness. There are so many blogs and websites about that. The magazines all have both and you know how many magazines there are so the market is inundated with the same stuff. And it is like the cooking shows. If one is cooking with eggplant that week, they all are. They are all talking about the latest fad, the latest exercise, the latest study. Sugar is bad, eggs are bad — eggs are good, sugar is the devil — eggs might be ok, sugar is crack. Just as examples. And, for me, sometimes there is so much going on that I don’t have time to do the research and check the latest facts. Life is busy. Sometimes I have to concentrate on teaching. Sometimes I have so much other stuff going on (you know in the last year I’ve had a lot of “stuff). Sometimes I feel my blog suffers. But I also think that when I just sit down and write . . . tell you what is going on (ya know when I don’t have time to research and fact check) . . . you guys seem to like that. How about a nice share today? You know I love to share.
I am lucky enough to be a part of a teacher rotation for a Nia class on Sunday. So this past Sunday I taught at they YMCA. It was the largest class I have taught there. It was really nice. The students were really into it. It is always such a moving experience to have twelve bodies enjoying the dance. Monday I am subbing for someone the month of October. That class was a joy.
My Tuesday/Thursday class is making me so proud and happy. Most of the people who attend Tuesday also attend Thursday. This group is really beginning to “get their Nia on”. They are actually sounding. It used to be that I could tell the area of the room where the “whoo” (or whatever) was coming from . . . but this week, I didn’t know. There were so many “whoos” and things I didn’t know who was making the noise. There were doing so well, that I said I was going to listen. So I was silent and they “ooed”! It was magical! I was so happy. I was silent a bit more just to hear them. And they kept going! It used to be they would stop after the first check. I would say, “I’m gonna do a sound check.” And the whole room would make noise, then the next time . . . . crickets! But not this week . . . they kept right on making noise!
One thing that happened, I already shared on Facebook, but I am going to share it here too, is the collective expression of dismay at our music being interrupted by lobby noise! There are a lot of lovely songs in our Nia music. We had just begun to get into the movement of the dance. And the majesty of the song was settling in over the room when there was this LOUD noise from the lobby. And the whole class went, “Awww!” Even though the noise would not have ruined the song or the dance, it just BURST into the sacredness of it. Two people went to shut the dance studio doors and I turned up the music and we danced on, but it was nice to see that other people appreciate the music and sacredness of it as well. We like to experience without BIG LOUD noise.
My Wednesday class was full of new students. And by full I mean, my “regulars” we not in attendance so it was just new students. Fun stuff!
Also, thanks to one of my Nia students I had the opportunity to share information about Nia to a club in the area. While it was understood prior to the meeting that nothing may become of it — as in, Nia may not be taught at the club — it was nice to be able to introduce people to Nia that had never heard of it before. I love to talk Nia so to be able to explain to people who might host it was awesome.
My yoga class turned into a private session of sorts. I was able to give one of my students some information that will assist her with something that she would like to improve upon specifically. It is one thing for me to do asanas that can help, but we were able to target some movement habits that she will be able to pay attention to. We both left feeling accomplished!
Then at the last minute when an instructor who became ill asked me to teach Nia for her students tomorrow, I said yes. So instead of teaching one Nia class, I am doing two . . which I have done before but at different facilities. Not two . . . back to back at the same place where I have already taught twice this week. So what that means is . . . I need to get my post up and get going on deciding on something to teach. So like I said in the beginning, sometimes I have to concentrate on teaching Nia!
So thank you for listening. It was a nice week. How was your week? Do share?

Nia is a dance exercise . . . dare I say it? It is much more if you want it to be. Otherwise you can keep it just as that, an exercise class that you attend where you dance. That is fine. When you attend regularly you will more-than-likely experience more, but you do not have to take it any farther than that. But . . . since I love dance and I teach a dance exercise class, I am going to post AGAIN about dancing. I am not writing about dancing in an exercise class at the gym, community center, or dance studio, I am talking about dancing ON THE STREET! My last post was about dancing on the street. It was the fun idea of dancing while you are waiting for the crosswalk signal to change. You can check it out HERE! This post is highlighting yet another video about dancing on the street. This time it is about dancing WHILE you are crossing the street.
Now it did cross my mind that some of these people looked almost as if they were doing Free Dance in Nia as they were very absorbed in their dance. Some looked as if it might actually not be a safe thing to do. But then I remembered that many people don’t pay attention when they cross the street as it is. Many people have their face down and they are looking at their phone. So I don’t feel that dancing while crossing the street is any more dangerous than the “phone-walk”.
This looks just as fun as dancing while waiting. I think they should come up with a crosswalk sign that is ALL dance. Dance while you wait, then dance across the street.
I do love how so many people seemed to dance while crossing the street. So many people seemed to get into the moment and just go for it. So fun. I love the girl at the end. She was completely surprised. I was thinking that some of these people were “planted” and were dancing as part of the people filming the video. And that could be true, but that girl’s shoe flying off her foot was not planned. She was surprised.
Not everyone is into dancing or be what you might call a dancer. That is one great thing about Nia you don’t have to be experienced in dance you just have to be willing to move. Could be that you don’t have to dance while waiting for the crosswalk sign to change or you don’t have to dance while crossing the street, but you still could take a moment during your day to enjoy life. That really is what all of this dancing is about. The people who like to dance get enjoyment from it so they do so while waiting or crossing. If dancing is not your “thing” that is fine, take a moment to do something that is. Do something — if just for a moment — that brings you joy.
I love all this dancing! Thanks, SoulPancake! A friend of mine post this one on Facebook. Have you seen this video yet?

When a body moves it expends energy. The bigger the movements the more energy expended. The faster the movements the more energy expended. The longer the body is in motion the more energy it expends. I teach Nia. It is not a boot camp where the higher ranked officer is yelling at you to move more, to more bigger to move longer. It is a cardio dance workout where you get to move your body in your own body’s way. You move to your level of movement. You move to the level you want to move at the time you are in the class. The more you move, the more energy you will use up. For some of us, the more we move the more we sweat. Honestly, if you don’t move you will not sweat. A lot of people equate a “good workout” with sweat. Not everyone sweats, but most people do sweat when they move. In Nia we don’t yell at participants to run faster, to reach higher, to go lower, to do more. We use words to help you move in a way that you want to move. Some people cannot move their bodies without being told exactly how to move. Some people just need the time and space and they either know exactly what to do OR they are able to just let go and let their bodies move. I have experienced the type of person that tells me they don’t sweat in Nia and the type that does.
One time, after teaching a class, I was walking out and mopping my face and neck with a towel. I was dripping wet. And a woman approached me and said, “You don’t sweat in Nia, do you?” I just looked at her and said, “No, YOU don’t.” She was the one that stood behind me the entire class and I never saw her body. I never saw her limbs and I never saw her. Now, I am not the smallest of people so it is perfectly feasible that she could hide behind me and me not see her. But it is NOT feasible to MOVE and not be seen standing behind me. If she would have lifted her arm once, I would have seen it. If she would have lifted her leg once, I would have seen it. If she would have MOVED, her body MIGHT have produced some sweat. I cannot tell you why she didn’t move her body except to stand behind me, but I can tell you since she did not she did not get a “good workout.”
Once a woman walked by me and a student talking after Nia class and she asked where the pool was. We were confused. Then we realized we were so wet with sweat we looked as if we had been swimming.
Then more recently, I experienced at participant in a class who, when we were done said, “Wow! I got sweaty.” And I said, “Yes, yes you did.” And that was because she moved. She participated. While she was not standing behind me, I did see her move in her own body’s way to the suggestions such as “dancing big”, “drumming the sky”, “body drum”. She moved in her own way to all of the suggestions even though she had no idea what Nia was when she entered the dance studio. But it was obvious she was there to get a “good workout” so she participated. She moved. She expended energy. She got sweaty.
In Nia, as with ALL workouts, you get out of it what you put in. If you don’t move, you are not going to expend energy. If you don’t expend energy, you probably are not going to sweat. You need to MOVE to get a workout. It is not accurate to say that Nia is not a “good workout” when you do move. If you don’t actually try it you can’t actually say whether it is good or not.
This is what I experience a lot. Remember I am a substitute for other classes besides Nia. So they are not always looking for something new and different. Some are excellent sports and try it. Some are not and so they don’t participate. Again . . . . they get out of of it what they put in.
Have you noticed that you get less of a workout when you move less? Do you agree that you get out of it what you put into it?

Nia was designed to be done in bare feet. I believe that yoga is also supposed to be practiced in bare feet. But there are many reasons as to why people want to have something on their feet. Many reasons why people don’t like “naked feet“. Some people don’t like to be barefoot in public places (and with that there could be many reasons). Some people need support of shoes for their comfort and health. Some people like to have traction built into their footwear. Since Nia is designed to be done in bare feet we do not spin on our feet we lift them up so having a little bit of traction does not interfere with our movement, whereas in a Zumba class where you are often twisting on your feet you do not want traction. What someone has come up with for yoga are toe less socks with traction on the bottom. I had a friend give me some as a gift. She was so sweet and said, “I know you do Nia barefoot, but I thought you might like these.”
While I love to do Nia barefoot there are some floors where the toe less socks come in handy. Some floors that I dance on or have danced on have a texture to them that is not very comfortable on the feet. Some floors are really dirty (without access to a dry mop or broom) and so the layer of fabric between the foot and the floor helps to keep the grit from digging into my feet and being uncomfortable. The fact that the toes are exposed give me a bit of a barefoot sensation. Allowing the toes to come in contact with the floor and keeping those nerves activated. The energy flowing from the earth and to the earth via the exposed toes.
For yoga these are great because the textured bottom of the sock allows for traction if sliding is an issue for you. The texture also assists in keeping you from spinning on the foot when doing Nia. Ha! I just realized it might help stop that altogether. It is possible to spin, twist, slide on your bare feet although you might end up with blisters. But with the traction on the bottom of the sock it stops you in your tracks. You are unable to spin, twist, or slide.
Maybe the yoga socks could act as “training wheels” for some. If at first exercising barefoot seems odd, maybe the socks can help ease you into it. Perhaps the socks could also assist in training people not to spin, twist, or slide, so when they do decide to go barefoot for their Nia workout they will already have the know-how of lifting the feet.
Whatever the person’s reason for not going barefoot, toe less yoga socks might be a great solution. I do want to say, just so you know, when in my Nia classes as long as the facility allows shoes (some yoga/dance studios do not allow shoes), everyone is encouraged to be comfortable so when wearing shoes allow people to be comfortable then they are invited to do so.
Do you ever exercise barefoot?

Wow. I just noticed that there are only three days (if you include today) left of the multiple planks. Three planks a day every day for 30 days. I missed three days. Well, I have three days left to make sure I get all three in.
This morning I took a yoga class at the studio where I teach Nia twice a week. This week is Bay Area Dance Week and so the class I took was free. It was nice to get my mat out and do some poses. I don’t use my mat at home, I just do it on the carpet.
There are a lot of free classes this week so you might want to check it out. You can see a schedule of free classes in my post, Free Nia, Zumba, Belly Dance, Yoga, and More.
So I am going to go do my three planks. Have you done yours yet?

I cannot believe it has been over a month since I was driving around to the Community Centers of San Jose that offer Group Ex classes checking out their floors! Since we do Nia bare footed I wanted to see what community centers have dance studios. While I was looking for the community centers is when I first noticed the painted utility boxes around. I can’t believe it has been over a month since I was driving from my Nia class in Willow Glen and I noticed someone painting the utility box that I pass all the time. Over a month ago! Wow. Time goes so fast. I was hoping to have more pictures of more boxes, but I haven’t seen any since then. I must not be in the areas where there are boxes — could also be that I am a little distracted and not noticing the boxes. Sigh. Anyway . . . I think the artist might have completed painting these boxes in one day. I am not certain because I didn’t drive by again until the following Monday and I didn’t stop to take pictures until a week after I first stopped. I was just waiting to post because I didn’t want to have the utility box posts right in a row. I don’t mind having Nia posts, or exercise posts, or food posts consecutively, I just didn’t want to have utility box posts one after the other. Before I knew it, it has been a month. Wow.
The first picture is a shot of the front of the boxes together straight on. The next “picture” is a collage (obviously) of pictures of different angles so you can somewhat see the side of the boxes. The second collage is pictures of the back of the boxes and the little label disclosing the artist and the sponsor.
Looks as if the birds are driving around in San Jose. These boxes are on Bird Avenue so I think it makes total sense that birds are driving cars, vans, motorcycles, sports cars, and delivery trucks.
You might have noticed that the artist incorporated the vent on the back of the box painting it as if it is the back of a truck. Cute. You may also have noticed that one truck seems to be carrying eggs. I think Mr. Willis is showing his sense of humor by having a bird drive around as either an egg delivery service or perhaps a pickup service.
It is quite a cheery little mural. Also very responsible. You might not be able to see, but all of the birds on scooters or motorcycles have on helmets. It is a law in California that you have to wear a helmet, so it is good of the artist to have legally correct drivers. I am not sure that any birds have been ticketed for not doing so, but it is still a good idea!
So what do you think? Cute, huh? Have you seen any painted utility boxes in your area? If you have I would love to see. Send me a picture with some information and I can post it.
