For many it is Christmas Eve. Some might not celebrate Christmas or it is past the day, but here, where I am, it is Christmas Eve. It is Tuesday so normally I would have had a Nia class in the morning, but the Park and Recreation Department of San Jose took the day off so there was no Nia this morning. They also have instituted a very abbreviated Group Ex schedule so my Nia classes with the City of San Jose are done for the year. We will be back Thursday, January 2, 2014. (WHOA! 2014!) I have one more Nia class in Willow Glen this year and one more class this year that I am subbing for the YMCA. Then onto the next year! So today I had a very relaxing Christmas Eve Day. Probably thee most relaxing Christmas Eve Day I have had in a LONG time. It was nice. One thing I had to do today was make spinach dip. In my world this is a common party treat. I have been making it for as long as I can remember. Although I had not made it in a long time. I think I first heard about spinach dip when I worked at my first mortgage job in the mid ’80s. So that is a long time. Spinach dip seems pretty common and timeless.
One thing I notice over Thanksgiving when I made a quadruple batch was that the recipe calls for a 10 ounce package of frozen spinach. Well our big green friend now makes his frozen spinach in 9 ounces sizes. I thought that was funny. Then today as I happened to be READING the recipe I noticed something that had me saying, “WHAT!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!” The directions actually say to COOK the spinach. I have never heard of such a thing. I have NEVER cooked the spinach. And as I mentioned I have been making spinach dip for YEARS. Cook the spinach? Really?
I prefer the Knorr Vegetable soup mix. But one year I couldn’t find it ANYWHERE and I ended up with the SPRING Vegetable mix and that was awesome because it had mushrooms in it. Now I can’t find that. I have also used other soup mix and have not been as happy as when I use Knorr. But this “cooked” really made me laugh out loud. Here is the recipe I am sure many of you are familiar with:
___________________________
Knorr Spinach Dip
Ingredients
1 box (10 oz.) frozen chopped spinach, cooked, cooled and squeezed dry
1 container (16 oz.) sour cream
1 cup Hellmann’s® or Best Foods® Real Mayonnaise
1 package Knorr® Vegetable recipe mix
1 can (8 oz.) water chestnuts, drained and chopped (optional)
3 green onions, chopped (optional)
Directions
1. Combine all ingredients and chill about 2 hours. Serve with your favorite dippers to your favorite people.
___________________________
Also, for me, the water chestnuts are NOT optional! They are a requirement. In fact, to me, the are the best part. If you watch me getting some spinach dip you will probably see me pushing my cracker/bread/veggie through the dish just trying to get at that chunk of chestnut.
In addition to the change in weight of the spinach they also now package it in a plastic, which helped when squeezing the water out. After I squeeze the spinach it is all clumped together so I use forks to pull it a part.
So I have two main questions for you:
1) Do you COOK your spinach?
2) How do you squeeze all the water out of the frozen spinach? To me that is the worst part.
Let me know because I am soooooo curious.
And to all I say:
Merry Christmas!

So here it is Friday again. Time goes so quickly it seems. Only ONE more check in! Wow!
So you might know I was hired on at the YMCA. It is somewhat the same as the City of San Jose was at first. Right now I am teaching as a substitute without a regular class. But with the YMCA I am actually subbing for Nia classes. That is really nice. The participants are there to do Nia.
Today I had one woman say as she was leaving that I made her smile for the first time all week. -Oh.- While that made me happy, Nia and I made her smile, I was also sad, it is FRIDAY and this was the first time she smiled. I think something is going on in her life so I am so happy that I could allow her a moment of Joy. I am grateful for Nia that I was able to do that. So you KNOW, that is going in my goodie jar.
How about you? What good things do you have going on? I know there is a huge rush going on right now at this time of year. The Holidays are almost here, but please take a moment to put something in your good things jar!

So, as a group exercise instructor one usually has a few jobs or venues to teach at. I have Nia classes at a studio where I rent the space, at a community center for the City of San Jose, and soon at some local YMCAs. In order to teach for the City of San Jose I had to go through the hiring process. Same with the YMCA. Today I spent a good portion of the day at a YMCA orientation. While a lot of the information they cover is common sense and a lot of it is information I have received at almost every job I have worked at some of it was unique to the YMCA. Such as the history of the YMCA. I admit I learned a lot. I knew what Y.M.C.A stood for (Young Men’s Christian Association), but that is about it. It helped that the trainer was clearly very enthusiastic about the history of the Y. As always when I learn something I think is interesting I like to share with you. Plus, when I document it via my blog, I have the information where I can always find it! So here are some facts I thought were cool about the history of the YMCA.
—-The YMCA was founded in 1844 in London, England
—-In 1859 a sea captain led the formation of the YMCA in Boston
—-In 1856 German immigrants participated in the first-known English as a Second Language class
—-Andy Rooney, Dan Rather, Malcolm X, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Jack Kerouac, and Andrew Young (U.S. Ambassador), have all stayed at the YMCA
—-In 1869 the first YMCA buildings constructed with gyms were opened
—-In 1875 in San Francisco, to serve the Chinese population, YMCAs serving Asians were established
—-In 1879 Thomas Wakeman founded a YMCA for U.S. Native Americans
—-In 1917 a Japanese YMCA was founded
—-In 1891 James Naismith, a physical education teacher at the International YMCA Training School, invented basketball
—-In the 1890s William Morgan, a YMCA instructor thought basketball was too strenuous for businessmen so he invented volleyball
—-By 1950 YMCAs operated 20 colleges in cities across the country
—-During World War II, the YMCA staff organized clubs and activities for children in the Japanese Interment camps — all in secret
—-In 1950 Joe Sobek, a YMCA volunteer, invented raquetball
—-In 1967 racial discrimination was banned in all YMCAs
—-In the mid 1970’s the Youth Basketball Association (YBA) was created by the YMCA and the NBA Players Association. The YBA promotes skills and teamwork over winning at any cost
—-In 2008 the YMCA and the Department of Defense and the YMCA partnered to fund memberships and child care services for families facing the hardship of military deployment
—-In 1891 a triangle was used a the logo, the equal sides representing “man’s essential unity, body, mind and
spirit, each being a necessary and eternal part of man, he being neither one alone . . . ”
I especially loved the last one as Nia has many triads and is greatly focus on Body, Mind, and Spirit. We add Emotion so we have BMES, but it is very much the same thing. Anyway . . . these are some of the main things I thought were interesting. Since the YMCA has been around so long it really has a long history.
Which YMCA history fact(s) is new to you? Which ones did you know? What do you know about the Y that I have shared?

As with all workouts, it is important to warm up before beginning. In a Nia class our warm up is one or two songs. When I was young and was first learning to exercise the way to warm up was to perform a series of static stretches. Science has proved that static stretching can actually increase relaxation and in a sense put your muscles to sleep. Research has now shown that the best type of warm up is to actually prepare your body for the activity it is about to do. So moving in a slower and more gentle way that you will be moving in the activity you are preparing for is a great way to actually warm up the muscles. Walking and/or a slow jog is always a great way to warm up the entire body — depending upon the planned workout. For a yoga practice a warmup could include moving the muscles that you will be using as you do the sequence of poses in your practice for the day. It is important to warm up the muscles before you put them into a full on stretch or expect them to hold you in a pose. A warmed muscle moves more easily and can stretch better than a “cold” muscle. In the beginning of our classes we often do an Upward Salute. I think it is a great way to start the warming up process.
The Upward Salute is sometimes called Extended Mountain Pose / Mountain Pose with Upward Stretch / Mountain Pose with Arms Overhead. The basis of the pose is the Mountain Pose. To do this pose first position your body in the mountain pose.
Summary of Mountain Pose: Toes touch and feet are parallel sense a stable base. Distribute the weight over the entire foot – both feet. Your legs are active and rooting you to the earth. The abdominals are engaged. The crown of your head is reaching up creating a long spine. Your muscles are active. Once you are comfortable in the Mountain Pose (for more details about the pose click here) turn your palms out and raise your arms up in a sweeping motion. Allow your arms to reach over the top of your head. Your palms come together. You gently look up.
If it is not comfortable to look up then keep your gaze forward. If it is not comfortable for you to bring your palms together then keep them apart, but facing each other. No matter if you are looking up or your palms are touching your shoulders are down. There is space between your shoulders and your ears. You have the idea of your shoulder blades sliding down into your back pockets. Allow the energy to flow down your arms, through your shoulders, through your back and your spine. Let it travel through your legs. Enjoy this nice stretch. Let it warm your entire body.
Staying here in this pose is a great warm up. If you would like more of a stretch and warm up for the back allow yourself to bend backwards. With this pose as a warm up the backbend is not deep. Your shoulders remain back and down even though you move your head tilts back while your gaze is up. Remain in this pose for a few breaths. Then move into Mountain and repeat several times.
Now, I am aware that many people have back issues either with their actually back bone, or their spinal cord, or the nerves, so these poses are to be done with the utmost caution. Keep in mind your OWN back situation and do only what is good for your own body. It could be that your body gets the stretch it needs by just standing in Mountain Pose with your arms raised and your gaze looking slightly up . . . that is fine. If that is a stretch for your back, then stay there and enjoy it. Yoga is not about competing. It is about doing what your body can do. Then as you do what your body can do there is a possibility that it will be able to do more. But there is no rush. Yoga is a practice. Enjoy the journey. This is a wonderful pose to stretch and warm up the body. And, of course it can also be done at the end of the session in the cool down when getting ready for Savasana.
Do you practice this gentle backbend?

In addition to teaching Nia classes for the city of San Jose, I was asked to teach a Gentle Yoga Class. I have taught three sessions and we have one more before the year is over. This last session before the holiday break is a short one, it is only four weeks. In the classes there is a large variety of fitness levels. Regardless of one’s level of fitness I believe it is very important for the emphasis to be on balance and flexibility. They also like to practice inner reflection which I believe enables a connection to the body. The connection is to allow for great stability and ease of movement. In order to meet the varieties of levels we do a cross between flowing through poses and holding them. I might have also mentioned before that we include getting up and down as part of our practice. With this next session we are going to do a progression of backbend poses. I have not yet decided on the progression of balance poses but I have the backbends progression planned. Since we only have four classes and there are five backbends I would like to progress through we will be doing two in the first class. As with my Nia classes, my yoga students are continually encouraged to do things in their own bodies way. Since yoga is a practice they can work into the poses. For the series of backbends they will be encouraged to stay at the level that is acceptable for their own body.
The first backbend we will do will be the standing backbend. Then, in the same class, we will progress to the Locust. The Locust has many modifications some of which can be done with just legs lift or the head and shoulders lifted.
Then in our next class we will move onto the Sphinx. I’ll probably include the Locust in the routine before moving on to the Sphinx, but the Sphinx will be the next in the progression. Then the next meeting we will move onto the Cobra. Excellent for strength, stability, and flexibility. The last class before the long holiday break will be the Upward Dog. Even though the idea will be for the students to progress through the backbends the modifications will be presented so each individual can progress only if they are ready.
Some students participate in yoga more than once a week so they are more likely to be able to participate in the progress whereas others will do so to a lesser extent – and modifications meet that need. This is a great way to work on flexibility. Everybody is moving in their own natural time through their yoga practice so I am excited to present this progression of backbends. I will include other flexibility poses and balances poses as in all the classes. I have been putting the emphasis on one or the other during a class which can still tie into the backbend progressions.
Of course, this is my plan prior to meeting with the class. It could be that after our first meeting I have to adjust my plan and that will be fine. I do like to see where the class is at and go from there, but it seems like our group has been pretty consistent. But I can easily adjust my plan for any new body.
I am very grateful and inspired by the students that come to class every week. It is very exciting to me to see their progress. Stay tuned for more on the poses that I have yet to post about.
Do you participate in a yoga class? How is it structured? Is it an on-going class or is it a series of classes?

I wanted to share one of the good things I put in my jar. It actually happened last week so I could have included it in my Goodie Jar – Check In #4, but I was so excited about the wrapping paper idea I got carried away with that. Anyway, last Thursday was Valentine’s Day and it was my second Nia class at the new time at one of the places I teach for the city of San Jose. I did not have one person in my class. Even though I don’t take it personally I still am usually a little sad when that happens, but this was a cause for a note in my goodie pitcher.
You might be wondering why I would think no one showing up for my class is a good thing, well, as I said it was Valentine’s Day and I was happy because no one being with ME meant that they ALL have SOMEONE to be with! Whenever I think of that I cannot wipe the smile off my face! HOW GREAT IS IT THAT ALL OF THEM HAVE SOMEONE TO LOVE?????? I am not even talking about romantic love. I know some people like to be with their friends, their kids, their parents . . . . WHO is not the issue . . . . LOVE is the thing! They were all too busy with a loved one to be with me. I’m good with that. I am better than good with that. I LOVE that.
So that is one of the things in my goodie jar! It is a GREAT thing that my students have someone to love!
Oh! That is another good thing for MY jar . . . . I have someone to love . . . . how about you? Are you adding things to your good things jar?

As the New Year approached and very shortly there after, I started seeing pictures of jars with paper inside posted on Facebook. The idea was simple, write down something good that happened and put it in the jar, at the end of the year read it, and be reminded of all the good things that happened to you during the year. Even though I loved the idea and I wanted to do it, I got caught up in other things and I forgot about it. Just this past week a friend posted a picture of her jar saying, “Do you remember this?” And I hadn’t. I had completely forgotten. I want to do that. I want a “good thing jar”.
First of all I don’t have a jar. So I am going to use a pitcher that I love, but hardly use. This way, I will be using something that I love and it will be pretty. Second, I don’t remember how often one is supposed to put something in the jar. Was there a rule? Was there a timeframe? I THINK it was “whenever” something good happened. I like that but I also want to make sure something gets in the pitcher. I am going to impose an at-least-once-a-week rule. It is not that good things don’t happen daily, I just think that life gets busy and I might not write something everyday but I want to make certain I do it at least once a week. I also don’t think there was a guideline on what “good” means. So for myself I am going to define it a bit. I am going to keep track of things that make me smile and the memory of which will make me smile. It does not have to be a significant thing, something say “to write home about”, but I want it to be something where I can say, “Oh yeah, I remember that. That was great!” Another thing I thought of, which I think might add to the experience is to date the note so I can remember better as I am reading about all the good stuff.
I love when I make deals with you and we have check-ins. Even though this is just a feel good kind of thing, I know that sometimes projects — even fun ones — get pushed aside and/or forgotten altogether when time is short, so I thought I would do a weekly check-in.
If you want to join me you can just post a comment on the post. I am going to do it on Fridays. My first check in will be Friday, February 1, 2013.
I have my first paper already in my pitcher. Of course is has to do with Nia and teaching another class for the City of San Jose.
Then on Tuesday, December 31, 2013, I will read about all the good stuff that happened throughout the year. I will be reminded of the things big and small. I am sure I will get warm fuzzies. I think this is a fabulous way to end a year and go into a new one.
What do you think? Is this a project you would like to join? Are you going to–join me?

I know I have mentioned before that I teach Nia as a substitute Group Exercise teacher for the City of San Jose. What that means is when a teacher can’t teach a class s/he will send out a message saying that a substitute is needed. In order to give our clients/students what they want we work to keep the substituted class close to what the original class is. If a Boot Camp teacher needs a substitute the first choice to have instead would not be yoga. Or vice versa. As you can imagine, when someone plans on going to a class and shows up and it is not what was expected it can take a little wind out of someones sails. Sometimes in order to keep the class from being cancelled a different format will be allowed, but that is rare. Usually someone is able to step in with a similar format. It is a real challenge when people have not even heard of the type of dance exercise that you are going to do in substitution for their normal class.
It seems like with many people the first time they hear of something they are a little resistant. To me this is understandable. It seems like a natural thing to shy away from something that is unfamiliar. And as I said, it really can be disheartening when you are looking forward to a specific thing/type of workout and you walk in and find it to be a class of something you have never heard of. I don’t take it personal when people decide not to stay or leave in the middle of class. I’ve learned a long time ago that Nia is for everyBODY it is just not for everyone. It can be a HUGE step for some people. It can be a huge switch in thinking and moving and a lot of things, I understand. So when someone comes in not knowing what they are in for and completely embraces it — I love it. I find myself thinking, “YES!” I admire the person and their openness.
I have been teaching a class where I am listening to the music, dancing, cueing, sensing, and looking out into the room and as my eyes survey the students I will see someone who is completely new to Nia and utterly unfamiliar with it, dancing with all of their body, mind, and spirit. It is so amazing. For someone to come in and not having even heard of Nia before the class to just embrace something so fully–it is so wonderful. That is one of the best moments ever. The challenge for me is to keep going myself. There are times when I just want to stop and watch because it is such a beautiful thing to see someone dance with all of their heart. It is as if they are glowing and all of a sudden they are all I can see. It is so incredible.
I appreciate the people who say, “I’m open to anything.” Or even, “What the heck? I am here. I might as well try it.” But it is really amazing to look out and see the ones that are just INTO it. In a Nia class where people come to DO Nia, it is typical to see people dancing with everything they have, but to see it in a class that is usually not Nia . . . . ahhhhhhh!
I felt like sharing this today. Thank you for letting me share a bit of joy with you. Today has been a GREAT day. Nothing spectacular or even note worthy has happen but there has been a lot of laughing and any day with a lot of laughing is a great day. Don’t you think?

I have already posted about one of the awesome gifts I received for Christmas. I received another one that makes me so happy when I use them I just wanted to share. You might remember I bought a speaker for my iPhone awhile back. I was so impressed with it I wanted to share about it because it is great to have a portable audio source, just in case. It is really helpful when you are teaching a dance exercise class like Nia. Well, more like it came up on Woot. My hubby looks at Woot and he knows how much I love my other speaker so he asked me if I wanted what they were selling on Woot. I glanced at it and said yes because it was LESS than I paid for my other speaker AND it was TWO speakers!
They are REALLY cool. When my hubby showed me I hadn’t even read all the cool features! First of all as I said, they cost less than my ONE speaker I originally bought. They are black but when they are in use and they are open they glow blue! These little guys are so cool.
They have their own bag, I love things that have their own storage. They fit together and stick with magnets. They have a volume control. They have an audio in cord and a connection cord. One speaker has the audio in cord. The other speaker has the cord that connects them. So you can just use one if you want. BOTH cords retract back into their respective speakers. How cool is that? I had just been telling someone over Christmas that I think every electronic device that has a cord (whether optional or not) should have a place that the cord can be stored ON/IN the device. But that is just me because I have what seems like a million cords and I don’t know all the devices they belong to. So every time I put these speakers away I am so impressed because I just pull gently and the cord goes right in. They are great sound for such little devices.
This particular pair came with a “BONUS! USB wall adapter” which the package claims is usually an extra $19.95. The speakers on Woot didn’t even cost that much AND it came with the additional adapter. I loved them so much I looked online to see if we could get more. We can, but at more than twice the cost and without the “BONUS”. I don’t NEED them so I’m not going to spend it. I just really like them and since the places I teach Nia at for the city of San Jose do not always have sound systems I was thinking I could keep a pair in my car.
The iHome/first speaker I bought does not have an electrical adapter. It only charges off a USB. So when I use it at a venue I am teaching at I have to make certain it is charged. But these speakers I just got, I could leave in the car and not have to worry about them being charged because in a pinch I could plug them in and use them. Also the iHome speaker does not have a volume control. Which is fine, because the device it is used with does. But I found out that it is really cool to have two options of volume control!
Of course these speakers would work with iPhones, iPads, iPods, MP3 players, MP4 players, and laptops!
Yeah, no post about goals and resolutions, just an excited post about something that makes me happy. I hope you enjoyed your New Year’s Eve. I wish for you to enjoy 2013.

As I was coming home from Target, one day I saw a huge rose. It made me happy. I loved it. Later on – as in months later – I was at a stop light and noticed a man sitting at a utility box. As I drove past him I realized what he was doing and decided to stop and talk to him about it. He explained it was something the city of San Jose was doing. Anyone could sponsor a box and an artist would volunteer to paint it. I first posted about this in July, then in August. Since then I have taken a few pictures of painted boxes in my area. I would love for people who have seen other art work to send me pictures so I could post more. I’ve only seen six. I am sure there are more.
These boxes make me happy. Even if I don’t care for the art work, I love that they are adding art and color to the city. I also think it is really great that the city is not paying for it and that they are sponsored projects. As you are driving, walking, moving, living in San Jose look around. See if you spot one. Take a picture or two and send it to me. If you can, take a picture of the “label” so we know who the artist is. I forgot to get a picture of the label naming the artist of the coffee cup boxes.
I took a lot more than the pictures shown here and in my last post, but these were the ones that showed the art the best.
In my last post I mentioned that some of the boxes are very close to busy/traffic-y corners. Like the rose. That is a busy intersection. I didn’t want to stand in the street as long as it would have taken to get a good shot. I forgot that I had taken a picture while I was at the stop light on the other side of the street. That one came out ok. I love this rose!

This is the photo I took from across the street while waiting at the traffic light! Such a vibrant rose.

Wow! Look at the sponsor. I just noticed that (right now as I was putting this picture in my post)! Awesome “Ladies Loving All Art”. That might spawn another blog post!

No, your vision is not off, you ARE seeing double . . . sort of. Two shots looking the same, sorry, but I liked both angles even though they are just slightly different. 🙂

Look at this one! SOOOOOO colorful! It is mouth-watering good, huh? Look at all that fruit!

This set of utilities boxes is yummy and fun!

What a beautiful color blue. It is like the sky!

Ooooh, LOOK! The fruit in the tree looks like hearts! Love that!

WOW! Listen to this one! It is as if the you can hear the music the musicians are playing! Swirls of notes and sounds!

I am very happy about this project. I think it is very cool. Thank you, San Jose. Thank you, sponsors. Thank you artists for sharing your talent.
So, what do you think? Do you have a favorite out of all six boxes? They are all pretty cool, but I bet you have a favorite, huh?
