Blood Pressure On My Mind

Posted by terrepruitt on May 28, 2018

It is believed that hypertension AKA high blood pressure puts you at risk for heart attack and stroke. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website, whose statistics are from 2015, Heart disease was the number one cause of death in the United States. Stroke was the fifth cause of death. The site does say “The 10 leading causes of death in 2016 remained the same as in 2015”. Although I don’t see any statistics on the break down of the heart disease deaths. How many were from heart conditions that were present at birth? How many were from injury to the heart? What are they considering “heart disease”? I mean, I would think that someone would what the “heart disease” numbers broken down into specific categories. Where is that information? Anyway, for some reason I am thinking about blood pressure. Could be because I was going through my pictures and a came across a picture I took of some information regarding truth and myths about high blood pressure.

It basically said that it is myth to think high blood pressure is normal and not dangerous. Untreated high blood pressure is dangerous. In addition to it possibly leading to heart disease and stroke it could damage the heart and/or kidneys. And according to that it could lead to a loss of vision.

Also . . . and this one is a HUGE common belief that they are labeling a myth, the one where “it runs in my family”. I’ve heard so many people say that it runs in their family so they just accept having it. As if there is nothing they can do about it. There is an actual belief out there that people CAN do something about it whether it is a family thing or not.

Another myth that the picture brings up is that if the symptoms such as nervousness or sweating are not present then there is not high blood pressure. But high blood pressure is nicknamed the silent killer because people can have it and not know. And, again, untreated high blood pressure can be dangerous. It is like your body being under assault all the time.

I just looked at the American Heart Association’s website they adjusted the numbers since I posted Blood Pressure Monitors – It’s All In the Wrist in 2012. They changed the numbers and the categories or what they call the numbers. There is normal, elevated, High Blood Pressure/Hypertension Stage 1, High Blood Pressure/Hypertension Stage 2, and High Blood Pressure/Hypertension Stage 3.

There are a lot of things that are proven to lower blood pressure. For some people the things that can lower blood pressure are really difficult to do. I know people in high stress jobs or in very stressful situations, might have a difficult time alleviating that stress. It is not as if people can just quit their jobs or completely change their living/life situation. So if life stress is something in your life that you can’t change then perhaps there are things you can do to combat it. Like exercising, going for walks, being outside, having a pet, visiting with friends, doing yoga . . . .doing things that can counter act the stress. Then there are things like losing weight, not everyone with high blood pressure is overweight but many are and if we were able to lose just five pounds sometimes that can help. Also, a change in diet. If there is switch from over processed/fast foods to fresh fruits and vegetables and home cooked meals that can help. Sometimes it can be a domino affect . . . . if someone decides to take up walking and getting outside to help combat the stress they might just lose some fat because of that. And/or a change in the diet might just help the fat come off.

Since the belief is that high blood pressure could cause heart disease and/or a stroke, it seems like along with that the belief is that lower it if it is high can help prevent that.  And who doesn’t want that?

Mom’s Amaryllis

Posted by terrepruitt on May 25, 2018

These bloom every year. They are so beautiful. My husband’s mom gave them to him to look after while she was away. Sadly, she was not able to return to take them back. They are a great reminder of a beautiful mother. This was taken at the end of April. They stayed until the middle of May.

Amaryllis as the Friday Photo.

Flavored Sea Salts

Posted by terrepruitt on May 9, 2018

I know many people think salt is bad for you because that is what the American Heart Association seems to preach. But salt is not bad for you and it is very necessary in our diet. What I think the American Heart Association bases their recommendations off of is the idea that the average American eats A LOT of fast food, and a lot of over processed foods. Fast Food contains a lot of sodium as do over processed foods. Often times food stuff can be “lite” or “less fat” and still flavorful by adding more sodium. So, I believe that the American Heart Association thinks there is too much salt in the average American diet and with that their recommendations have scared people away from salt. I started off with that because I am going to post about salt. Not just any salt but a particular salt.

I have a friend that visits Hawaii once a year, I believe. She is one of the generous people who buys gifts for people whenever she goes on a trip. Well, one year she brought be a few salts and spices. Since she bought me a few it took me awhile to get to using them all. Well, there was one that once I opened it I used it on everything I could use it on. I fell in love with Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt.  I used the Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt so much I quickly went through it.

My friend always asks me what flavor to bring back when she goes and I tell her Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt. But the last time she went to brought me Aloha Spice Company’s Aloha Vanilla Hawaiian Cane Sugar so we could see what that was like. She didn’t bring me the Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt. So I got to thinking . . . maybe I could just buy it from Aloha Spice Company. Well, of course I can. But I can also buy some flavors through Amazon.  So that is what I did.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitI don’t use the Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt on everything that can be salted because I am not sure the Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime flavor would go with everything, but it pretty much goes with ALMOST everything. It is great on veggies. You know, if you have ever read one of my posts about veggies, you know I love to roast veggies. The Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt on roasted veggies . . . . . WOW! So good.

She had also brought me Kiawe Smoked Garlic Hawaiian Sea Salt.  Since I use garlic on pretty much everything I cook . . . so using the Kiawe Smoked Garlic Hawaiian Sea Salt is really not a big change.  I also got some Guava Lime Smoked Hawaiian Sea Salt, which is not as flavorful as the one with ginger, but it is very good.  It is amazing, to me, the different flavor that these salts add to things.  Not an over powering flavor, but just enough to make things I would use garlic salt on anyway – very, very yummy!

The salt comes in little bags which I find tedious to use. So after my friend brought me a few bags of different types of spices I started saving the spice bottles from the organic spices I buy. They are glass and really nice to use. The label peels off them very nicely and they wash up really well. Once the spice that is in the bottle is done, I peel off the label and put the bottle in the dishwasher. Then I peel (I think I peeled once and that is why the Hawaiian Guava Smoked Ginger Lime Salt label is ripped) or cut out the Aloha Spice Company label and stick it/tape it to the jar. So much easier to use the spice from a shaker jar.

So if you are looking for a little taste of the island 🙂 and you cook things that you like to salt, you might want to check out Aloha Spice Company and see if there are any spices that you might like. They sell a lot more than just salt blends.

Do you use sea salt?

Christmas – ALL YEAR LONG

Posted by terrepruitt on April 30, 2018

Everyone is different, right? So, it might be too early for you to think about Christmas. But I am often thinking about Christmas. I am not a shopper. I do not like to GO shopping. I do most of my shopping online, so when I am out in a store, Christmas might come to mind if I see something cool. This month, April, I didn’t walk into the store specifically thinking about Christmas, but when I walked into the store and I saw something that reminded me of someone who is on my Christmas list THEN I start thinking about Christmas. On our recent trip to the ocean I found some items that I purchased with the intent of giving them as Christmas gifts.

I was talking to the store owner and I mentioned that most things in the pile of items she was holding at the register were going to be Christmas gifts. She mentioned that when she buys gifts so far in advance she forgets about them. Ha.Yes! I have had that happen too. I have forgotten that I have purchased gifts for someone and I ended up buying additional gifts for that person. I have also misplaced gifts that I have purchased throughout the year.

So a few years ago I started keeping a list on my computer. I have a “running” list of people who I buy for so after having given the gifts I just delete the items and save the list of names as “the next year of gift giving Christmas” (ex. 2018 Christmas). Sometimes I have room in one spot in a closet or on a shelf for all the gifts, but sometimes I don’t, so I also include a note on the list as to where the gift is being stored. That way I know where it is.

Since I am an online shopper I also have a system for “ordered” and “received”. When I order something I type it on the list next to the person’s name in regular text and I highlight it. When I receive it, I remove the highlighting and make the text bold. Because sometimes I might have an IDEA of what I want to get someone and I might include that on the list . . . so if the item is just plain text that is the IDEA of the gift. Highlighted is WAITING FOR/ORDERED/IN THE PROCESS OF MAKING and BOLD is received/completed.

I also cross the items out and put “Done!” near the names when I am done with buying for that person, otherwise I will just keep reviewing the items and deciding whether to add more or not.

This could work for any gifts you might buy throughout the year.  You could have a Birthday Gift List or whatever occasion you purchase gifts for.

What about you?  Do you shop early for gifts?  Have you ever forgotten or misplaced a gift?

Henna Cattoos

Posted by terrepruitt on April 23, 2018

You may know from reading my blog that my husband and I adopted two cats from a place called The Dancing Cat. It is a “cat lounge”. It is not a cat CAFE because they don’t sell food, or coffee, or tea, but it is like one, in that you can visit with cats. You can bring your own food and drink and pay a small fee to visit with the cats for an hour.  Also, unlike some cat cafes ALL of the cats are up for adoption.  The Dancing Cat also hosts events like Mewsic Nights, Learning How To Paint Your Cat or take pictures of your cat. They also have a Henna Cattoo Night. There is a local artist, Shannon Balco, who comes in and does henna tattoos.

They have been doing it for a while but I was always away when they did it, but this last time I was home. Yipeee! Shannon has a book of pictures of tattoos she can do. Not all of them are cats.  She is even so talented as to do one that someone showed her a picture of. The one that looks like Yin and Yang cats! She did that right there after just seeing it. Cool, huh?

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitHenna is drawn on like a thick paste. The recommendation is for you to leave it on AT LEAST 30 minutes then you can scratch it off (not wash it off). The longer you leave it on the better.  When I first got a henna tattoo I was told to leave it on AT LEAST 4 hours and no longer than 12 hours.

The pictures are pictures of the “Cattoos” she did when I was there.  The last two show my tattoo.  The first one is after I scraped all the dried paste off. Since it is on the back of my hand and very thin delicate lines a large portion of it had just flaked off. I was concerned with it flaking off and me not noticing and then one of my cats eating a henna flake. So I just scratched it all off. It had probably been about five or so hours. I did not wait 24 hours without water because it is on my hands. In the past I had the henna put on my feet. I could easily not wet my feet for 24 hours, but not my hands. I was at a cat place. I had to wash my hands when I came home. I HAVE cats, I am constantly washing my hands. It didn’t seem to affect it adversely.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThe very last shot is the next day. Henna darkens at first then it starts to fade. The length of time the tattoo lasts depends on where it is and what it sustains. If it is on your hands and you wash your hands often, it will probably come off sooner. If it is on your leg and doesn’t come into contact with water that much it might last longer. It does help to put oil on it. When I first got a henna tattoo that artist recommended just tiger balm. The second time I put oil on it. I think the oil helps.

I can’t wait for The Dancing Cat to do this again. I am going to go again. I am going to ask her if she will do my foot instead of my hand. Since I dance Nia I like to have my feet decorated.

What do you think? Have you gotten a henna tattoo?

Prom Dress GiveAways

Posted by terrepruitt on March 28, 2018

In my search for something to blog about today, I was looking through my folder of things to post and I came across something I started to write about in 2009. I clicked on the link and was happy to see that the website is still active and it is current. So the organization is STILL going strong. So amazing. Still makes me teary-eyed, which is what happened when I first heard about this. Nine years ago when I was looking for something to post about and I turned on the TV. There was a story about The Glass Slipper Project.

Here is what I wrote:

“There is a woman in Chicago who started the Glass Slipper Project 10 years ago. It is an organization that collects dresses to give to girls that otherwise might not have a dress to wear to the prom. According to what I was watching there were 700 girls lined up to get a dress. The project has helped 13,000 girls.

The young women don’t just get dresses, they get shoes, jewelry, make-up, and of course, to feel like a princess at least for one night. I looked at their website: http://www.glassslipperproject.org and it seems while they are not affiliated with other organizations they do have a list of other places in other states that do the similar thing.”

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThat was April 24, 2009. So it has been 19 years and The Glass Slipper Project is still going strong. According to the website they have helped more than 20,000 girls get decked out for prom.  The website does show that there are sponsors, now.

I just love this idea of helping girls in need of prom dresses being able to actually get them – for free . . . . and shoes, jewelry, and make-up. Buying all of that for prom can be very expensive.

When I first started this post, in 2009, there was The Princess Project in San Francisco. Their website said that they had helped over 9000 girls in the Bay Area since 2002. Now their website – http://princessproject.org/locations/ – shows they have five locations in California. It also looks like I just missed the event in the South Bay Area and the other Northern California locations, but is seems like Southern California has yet to have their giveaways. I could be off on the dates since each location seems to have their own website. I am not clicking over and scouring the pages, I am clicking over and scanning. So if you are interested in getting a dress or interested in volunteering or donating, please click over to the site and review the information.

The Glass Slipper Project in Chicago looks as if their dress give away is in April.

This is a great thing for people needing dresses and for people who need to get rid of dresses. It is a great way to give things another life. So many clothes end up in the landfills, this is a great way to help a person out and to keep clothes out of the landfill.

What do you think?

PS:  The picture is of me and my friends at our prom.  In the 80’s.  Of course, you could tell that.

Nag Champa – My Favorite

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitDo you like to burn candles? I do. I love to burn candles. I love scenes on TV shows or in movies where the room is just filled with candles. But I always wonder how long it took them to light all those candles. I mean, in reality they have a team of people come in to light the candles – or so I think. But if it were the character in the show, how long would it have taken them to light that many candles? Do you know the scenes I am talking about? The ones where there are at least 40 to 75 different sized candles burning. It would take a long time to get that many candles lit. And then you have the danger of the candles being knocked down. Ok . . . so even though I love the look, I wouldn’t necessarily have that many candles burning all at once. And with cats who at times seem like something is after them and they have to FLY through the room into the next, I prefer not to have too many candles burning. I also prefer to have the candles I burn be jar candles or tea lights in a “jar” or votives in a “jar”. Something where the flame is not exposed. If I am sitting in the room then I can handle a bare flame candle, but I am most comfortable with jar candles.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitThere are so many that I love. There was a candle at the grocery store that I was buying at least once a month. I stopped when I ended up with a small stockpile. But when I ran out the display seemed to have disappeared. I think I saw it at the other end of the store, but I don’t walk in that way and forget about it. So . . . I don’t have a stockpile of those ones. But I do have a stockpile of my other favorite candles.

They are Terra Vela candles you can buy them online from www.TerraVela.com, but we usually stock up at an Art and Wine Festival. They are the kind of candles that smell good without even having to burn them. The room a candle is in will smell like the candle just by being in there. It is so awesome. That means, for me, I can get the scent of the candle without having to burn it. I can just have it on the table next to me for a bit. Then when I burn it I can smell the scent, too. To me those candles are like double the time you get to enjoy the scent.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitAs you can see there are several scents that we like. Actually a couple of these are new to us. We bought them the last time we saw her. As I was taking the picture the scent was amazing. I am looking forward to using the Khaya. I have another one, Creme Brulee, I think, on my table right now. It is almost done and I think Khaya will be my next one to burn. Nag Champa is my favorite. I don’t know how to say it, but it smells divine. That is my FAVORITE.

She has a lot of different scents so I am sure you can find something you love. But one of the reasons I like to buy from her at a festival is so that I can smell them all.

It is raining here, to me that is candle burning weather. So I have candles on my mind. That is why I am posting about them because I was thinking about the lovely scents of these candles and I thought I would share in case you love burning candles as much as I do.

Candles make a great gift, too. Another thing I love about candles.

What do you think?  Do you like candles?  Which do you like to burn?  Do you have a favorite scent?

No Wet Foot

Posted by terrepruitt on March 7, 2018

A long time ago, I used to country western dance. In fact, that is how I met my husband. I started off line dancing. It was super fun, but I never seemed able to keep up with all the dances. I learned a few, but by the time I learned them the crowd was already onto a new dance. So then I decided I could try couples dancing. Well, perhaps a few months into it (actually I don’t remember when at all, but-) – at some point I bought some dance boots. They looked like cowboy boots, but had a suede bottom for dancing. Well, these were the most expensive pair of shoes I had ever purchased in my life so I wanted to protect them. What a lot of dancers do is they bring their dance shoes/boots in and put them on in the dance venue. That way the bottom of the shoe does not get wet or worn on the ground outside. This also protects the dance floor from any sand, dirt, grit, grime, or whatever being brought in from the outside. To me bringing in my dance shoes and changing into them there was kind of inconvenient, I always hated having to keep track of my shoes I wasn’t wearing. So somewhere along the way we found Robby’s No Wet Foot.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitSo cool. These are like the shoe covers you see on medical TV shows they wear in surgery or when there is a really immune compromised patient. They are booties that go over your shoes but these are made of a vinyl. So easy to just slip them over dance boots or dance shoes and take them off once at the dance floor. They just roll up like a pair of socks and can be stored in a jacket pocket or purse. When I went dancing I would not bring a purse – because I didn’t want to have to keep track of it. I would, on occasion bring a jacket and these fit right in the pocket.

I have no idea where we got them, but I am guessing it was at a dance competition. I am thinking there was a booth and we bought them there. But when I look online they are marketed to bowlers. Bowling shoes have suede on the bottom too and just like dancers you don’t want to get stuff on the bottom. It interferes with performance. Bowlers and dancers alike also don’t want to get the bottom of their shoes wet. So with a bowler it could be a matter of putting them on while they are walking around the bowling alley and/or going to the restroom. A wet suede bottom does not slide and that is not something you want when bowling or dancing.

Any dancer that doesn’t want to get stuff on their shoe, or stuff on the dance floor might be interested in a pair of “No Wet Foot”.  The website shows they have the vinyl shoe covers in three colors and a pink ribbon pattern.  They have fuzzy ones in seven colors.  It looks as if the fuzzy ones are just fluffy on the top and the bottom is made of the vinyl.

What do you think?  Cool idea, huh?  Do you bowl?

This Might Interest You

Posted by terrepruitt on March 5, 2018

I’ve been blogging for a long time. At least I think it is a long time. I know there are people out there who have been blogging for even longer, but to me nine years is a long time. In fact this month is my nine year anniversary to the blogging world. I started in March of 2009. Well, since I have been blogging so long and not all of you have been reading my blog that long, I thought I would point out some posts that you might be interested in. Keeping in mind the comments I have received and the conversations I have had with some of you. Also keeping in mind your blogs, here are a few posts that I thought I would point out in case any of you might be interested.

This is one about an amazing product that helps me with my bumps and bruises. Some of you may be interested.  The product is Zheng Gu Shui.

Foam Rollers are COOL! is a post about two stretches that you can do with a foam roller. Many of us need to stretch more often and many of us love it when we do. These are super easy ones some of you may like.

I teach Nia, you may have heard :-). One of the things I love about Nia is that a lot of our practices within the practice can be applied to life. Here is a post about Sustain, Increase, Tweak, we do it in Nia while dancing and it can easily be applied to our every day life.

I LOVE to watch birds taking a bath in our bird bath. We used to have blue jays that would come back every year to have their babies near by. One time I got a few photos of a baby taking a bath. Even though he may look big, he is a baby. The young ones usually look larger and fluffier than the adults. Pictures do not capture the joy this bird seemed to be experiencing! This post has is about a Baby Blue Jay Bath.

Hummingbirds’ beaks are not straws they suck through, they actually have really long tongues. You can see that in my Hummingbird Tongues post.

More for the bird lovers: Silhouettes

For the dog lovers: Honey, I Shrunk the Doberman Pinscher

The comments on this one are worth a read, Lyrics Gone Wrong. Too funny!

Some nice shots of a beach trip. Do you wanna see the ocean? Check out my post Santa Cruz, California

Ahh, this one I am posting just to remind myself . . . . I need a color for that! Color Me A Reminder

Ok, sorry, I have shared more than I was planning, because I want you to look at all of them, but ten might be too much. I might just have to do another post somewhere along the way to point out some of my old posts that might be of interest to you. And get them some love.

Thanks for taking a look.

Easily Amused

Posted by terrepruitt on February 28, 2018

Are you on Facebook? Do you actually post stuff or just look at other people’s stuff? Well, if you post stuff you may know this, already.  Although you can still see the effects if you click on the particular words, you might not have tried that, they just happen if you type. There are some “words” that cause fun stuff to happen on Facebook when you type them or click on them. I know it is an absolutely ridiculous thing but I love it. It makes me happy. In fact recently when I was typing an e-mail (yes, I am still on Facebook and I still type e-mails) I was disappointed because my e-mail was not doing the same thing that Facebook does.

I only know of four “words” (and I say “words” because only two are actually words) that result in fun animations that float up your screen. I bet there are more.

If you type “Congratulations” or “Congrats” and post it you will get a fun animation. You can also click on the word where someone else has posted it and the same animation will float across your screen. It is like a party. Balloons and confetti!

If you post “XO” or “XOXO” (not sure how many you can type, I’ve seen up to three – xoxoxo) a fun animation will float across the screen. This one is hearts. The same applies for all of them, you can type it or click on it if someone else has posted it and you will see the individual animation that goes with each word.

There is also “Rad” I am not sure if “Radical” works just like congratulations and congrats work. But with Rad there are flying blue thumbs.

And “BFF”, again, here I am not sure if you actually typed out “Best Friends Forever” if that would make the animation work. But BFF has hearts dancing on the screen.Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit

The text of the animation words is colored.  That way you can know which words will result in the fun stuff.  Congrats and XO look somewhat red, Rad looks pink, and BFF looks green.

If this type of thing makes you happy you too might be disappointed when typing these words in other places. There is no animation in e-mail – at least in my e-mail.

I am not sure, but I also think that when I look at my notifications I see hearts float up the screen when someone has liked (?) loved (?) one of my posts? Again, not sure, but I do think I have seen hearts. Sometimes it happens so fast I am not sure to which notification it is happening.

I also use Facebook several places so it could be that each place and version operates differently. I mean, I think FB updates the same, but some of my devices are so old they might not support the new stuff. So my animations could be all over the board.

I bet there are more words that have animations. Are there? Do you know of any other words (“words”) that when posted cause animations to happen?
