Yard Fairies

I bought one like her and two others for my friend for her birthday or Christmas, I can’t remember which. But it didn’t really matter because we didn’t get together for our birthdays until Christmas. Anyway . . . I wanted to wait until I had given her the fairies before I posted mine. I didn’t take pictures of all of hers because they were wrapped so well when I received them I didn’t unwrap them.  She was of the same mindset when she opened the gift. They were so well wrapped we didn’t take them out of their packaging entirely. But they were so beautiful. Perhaps I can get her to send me pictures and I can add them to this post. I love blue so I bought the blue one for myself.

Oh, I was able to find pictures of the other fairies in the e-mail order confirmation. The pictures show the colors of the wings, but the wings are folded down. In the picture of my blue winged fairy you can see that the wings and be pulled out. The wings are on springs so they move.

They are a very good size. I think mine is a little less than one and half feet tall. So I think the other ones are at least that tall. The one with her arm up, the pink and blue winged one is a bit taller than the others due to her arm being extended.

They are made of sturdy metal. I have tripped over mine several times and she her wings are able to be bent back to where they are displayed nicely.

Now that my friend has her fairies I can post them. They are really fun yard decorations!

Chicken, Potato, And Bell Pepper Scramble

Twice in the past few days I have had the conversation about how coming up with dinner ideas is a challenge. I understand this is one reason why people have dinner services deliver. Unless you have a box meal delivered every single day that still doesn’t completely alleviate the having-to-come-up-with-ideas-for-dinner. As you know if you have looked at any of my “recipes” I sometimes just throw stuff together. It doesn’t even always have to “make sense”.  After making Taco Pie and Enchilada Chicken, I used the leftover sauce as sauce for our tortellini . . . . yup, that works. Sometimes you might feel like something particular but you might have to cobble it together using the ingredients on hand. There are a few things that make for easy make-up meals, in my opinion, one is ground turkey – throw anything in with it and you have an entree. Pasta is another easy meal, it can be topped with anything or nothing. And eggs are another thing you can throw anything into to make a meal. Here is an easy breakfast-for-dinner-scramble in case you don’t want to think about what to make for dinner.

two or three potatoes (depending on size)*
olive oil (3 tablespoons +/-)
season salt
can of chicken
1/2 of an onion
salt
garlic powder
5 or 6 eggs
milk (1/4 c +/-)
butter (2 tablespoons +/-)
one bell pepper

Preheat oven to 450°. Wash the potatoes, if you like your potatoes peeled you can do that. Cut the potatoes into small chunks. Place them on a baking sheet. Sprinkle potatoes with about 2 tablespoons of olive oil and season salt (or whatever seasoning you prefer). Place in the oven to roast. After about 10 minutes take them out and toss them around. Then place back in the oven. Roast the potatoes until done to your liking . . . tossing them around occasionally for even roasting.

You can pan fry/roast the potatoes if you like. Heat the oil in a pan, then add potatoes and seasoning and cooking until done.

Chop the onion. Chop the bell pepper. Heat up 1 tablespoon (+/-) olive oil. Add the onion and cook it.

While the onion is cooking crack the eggs into a bowl, add a little milk, salt, and garlic powder (and, of course, any seasoning you want). Scramble the eggs, mixing until frothy.

When the onion is cooked add the chicken to the pan sprinkle with garlic powder. Warm the chicken up, it doesn’t take long because it is already cooked so you don’t want to let it cook too long because it dries out.

Add butter to your pan – or use another pan, or remove the chicken for adding back later – once the butter is melted pour in your eggs, keeping them separate from the chicken. I like my scrambled eggs WELL COOKED so I let them cook a bit before I mix in the chicken. Once the eggs look almost cooked I add the potatoes. I DO NOT like my bell pepper cooked so I add it at the very last minute . . . cooking it long enough to just warm up.

Mix it all together and serve.

*I have seen russet potatoes that seem like they are two or three, but then red potatoes are little so you might want to use three or four . . . you want to end up with about 2 cups cooked potato. You decide, if you are not a big potato fan use less, if you LOVE potatoes, use more.

I usually cook this for dinner, but some people might consider it strictly a breakfast item. I sometimes have left overs of it for lunch . . . so if you like it, eat it anytime you would like.

Oooooh, one might even add cheese . . . . .

Teagan Transfixed

This was so fascinating – to me – because she sat like that – unmoving for at least 5 minutes. She was as still as a statue. And I couldn’t see what she was looking at. Although, if you know a cat you may have experienced the phenomenon where THEY see SOMETHING, but you don’t.

I love their (cats’) concentration and the way they can sit so still. Of course, I have a whole series of these, I just kept taking them as she sat stock-still.

Come On Baby Light My Candle

I may have mentioned on my blog in a past post that I love candles. I love to buy candles. I love to receive candles as gifts. I love to burn candles. I prefer candles that are scented with essential oils. I also lean toward soy candles but I don’t necessarily restrict myself to them. There was a time when my husband didn’t like candles, they pose a certain risk and he didn’t think it was worth it. So I tried to make sure that the candles we had were in jars or were tea lights that could be placed in a holder that was jar like so at least the flames was somewhat contained. But now he is lighting candles even when I am not home. So it was really cool when I received this lighter for Christmas. We have a few like this, but they always seem to be out of fuel. And then we don’t think about it until we go to use it. So the butane doesn’t make it on our shopping list – ever, it seems like. So this one I received was an exciting change.

Yeah, you plug it in and it charges.  I received it as a Christmas gift after Christmas so it hasn’t really needed charging, but after we used it a few days I charged it anyway. The site claims it takes 1-1.5 hours to charge and that a full charge is good for up to 300 lights. Wow! It is easy to use once you get the hang of it. I find that putting the wick in between the prongs is not the way it works, so as soon as I got the hang of it, I can light a candle now without clicking it five times. So, with 300 hundred lights per charge I see it lasting a LONG time before it needs to be charged again. I think it is so cool.

This one is awesome. And it is super awesome because my friend that gave it to me knows I love blue and she got me a blue one! They come in at least 13 different colors.

The site says it is “gas appliance safe” so even if you don’t light candles, if you have gas appliances to light it might be something you would be interested in.

It makes a noise that one of my cats DOES NOT LIKE.  She runs away.  The other day I lit a candle using a match and she didn’t even look up, but if she sees me pick up the lighter she runs.  Which is fine by me, I would rather my pets be afraid of things that can hurt them then to be curious and get injured.  But I try not to use it when she is around, I don’t like to scare her.

Aside from it scaring my cat, it is super cool.

Listening Reports And Badges

I believe I started listening to Audible in August, but the little “report” only shows five months at a time. The photos show I have listened to 43 titles, but some of what you see are actually collections. Robot Geneticists is actually 6 books. Galaxy Outlaws is 16 books. Astral Prime is 12, but I think I’ve only listened to 8 of those. Mercy For Hire is 8, but I listened to four of the books twice – LOVE me some Wesley Wesley!!! And the Renegade Star Series is 13 books. So . . . that is about 89 books. Some of those I had listened to with my hubby on our drives to and from my dad’s so the hours won’t add up. But I am driving more because I have a different class schedule so I get to listen more. Also, I had typed this post and as I was editing the pictures I decided to post a nod to my mother on her birthday. So five days have past since I made the collage of the books in the library so I manually edited the three books I finished since I started the post. I think it is fun to see what I have listened to, for how long, how many hours a month, and the little badges they give.

Recently I was listening to a book that was ok, but the reader was not. He didn’t even attempt to do separate voices for the various characters so I never understood what was going on. I had to rewind a lot to understand because I could never tell who was saying what. NO ATTEMPT AT ALL. He just read the book. Some readers are GREAT at the different voices, some are not so great, but at least they make an attempt. You can tell that there are two people talking and you can follow along. Some men don’t do female voices good, but at least they try. Some women don’t do male voices well, but at least they try. This guy – ugh – NO EFFORT AT ALL. I had two hours left of the book and I seriously considered not listening to the rest of it just because he was so awful and there was so many conversations going on it was annoying. I will never listen to another book read by that person!

According to Audible I have listened a total of 25 days, 5 hours, and 44 minutes. In November I was cleaning a lot and listening and in December there was a lot of decorating time spent listening. When I started typing this I didn’t think I would get anywhere near November but then I had a long drive and I was listening a lot while I worked, so the last couple of days of January I was able to get some serious hours in. Thursday I finished listening to one book and started another (“Where the Crawdads Sing”), was able to finish that and this weekend start a new one (“The Golem and the Jinni”).

The 7-Day Stretch says that I completed 10 books in a week. I would be interested to know what books those were. Some books are super short like two hours, but some are super long so I would love to know what 10 I listened to in a week. I usually listen to a long one then a short one. But I think after one particularly long (and enjoyable) series I was listening to a lot of short books so as not to be stuck in a LONG book.

The Stenographer one is really hilarious – to me, because it says I placed at least 40 bookmarks. That is so funny because I think I only purposely place 2, but I have accidentally hit the “bookmark” 38 times. Ha!

The Nibbler badge say I have listen to at least 3 different titles on one day. I am thinking they mean they were played.  It doesn’t say FINISHED three books in one day.  I don’t think I listen to three different books in ONE day. I imagine I accidentally started one and then maybe listened to TWO in one day, but THREE. And that would be if one were short and I was in the middle of one in the same day. It would be fun if the stats showed information on the books.

I didn’t get the repeat listener because the first time I listened to the books I listened to twice I think I listened to it with my hubby. It was on my phone. I will probably listen to it again because I love Wesley Wesley, so it might show up then.

Miss You, Lady

#AYogaPoseADay

Last week I asked my Tuesday yoga class if anyone would be interested in trying a yoga pose a day. I clarified that the idea was for me to just text or e-mail a pose a day. There wouldn’t be any instructions or anything. I asked them to either text or e-mail me if they wanted to participate and that I would send the pose the way they requested. A few of them were interested. So the following day I sent out a pose. Then I realized that I had written a post on a few poses and I thought that I could include that in the text and e-mail just to get us started. I would send the link with the first few. I hadn’t looked up all of the posts that I had written regarding asana but I found a back bend post that had links to posts about back bends so I could include those links with the text/e-mail. I haven’t posted about a lot of poses, but tonight I did look through to see what I had done. We will have a few more poses that can have posts attached to them, but the idea was just to send out a quick idea, “Hey, today do xxxx.” I also extended the invitation to my Thursday yoga class.  It has been fun so far.

I had been tweeting it, but not all posts have a picture so my gravatar of me and Nessa was being posted so I stopped tweeting because I hadn’t noticed the way to keep that from posting. I was using #AYogaPoseADay. Tweeting could be something I keep up with now that I see I CAN keep the picture from posting by deleting the preview. I mean Nessa is a cutie, but I understand it gets annoying when every tweet has a picture of her and I. And, as I said, not every #AYogaPoseADay will have a post so that will be good.

I love finding simple ways outside of the class to connect with my students (or others, if you want to join us please do. You can follow me on twitter or asked to have the #AYogaPoseADay e-mailed to you).

The idea is just for me to suggest a pose a day . . . perhaps it is all you do or perhaps it gets adding into the practice you have. The instruction we decided upon was 30 seconds or four breaths. I actually suggested that the students time their breaths just to have an idea of how many breaths they do in 30 seconds or how long four breaths is for them. Then you can play with it from there.

Answers To A Few Questions About Nia

I think it is time to revisit some things.  A compilation of re-visitation.  How does that sound?  This is in regards to Nia.  I have all of this information spread out in various posts on my blog and in various places on my website but I thought I could revisit some information for a post.  This will help to get the information out there.  I will answer some questions that I have received recently as a new group of people are going to be treated to a Nia class.

How is Nia different than Zumba?
Well, based off of my Zumba and Nia training and based off of the Zumba and Nia classes I have attended the main difference is movement, both speed and type.  Zumba is regularly faster.  Nia can be fast, but in general is slower than Zumba.  Zumba’s movements tend to be more Latin; focusing on movement of the hips and feet, whereas Nia is more of an entire body movement type of dance class.  Nia incorporates three art forms into the dance (martial arts, dance arts, and healing arts – more about all of that can be found in the “The Nine Basic Movements Forms Of Nia” post.)

Is it sweaty?
Well, that is based entirely on you, the individual.  Some people dance Nia and don’t sweat, it could be that they just aren’t the type of body that sweats or it could be that they really didn’t move enough to sweat.  I remember teaching one class years ago and a student came up to me as I was toweling off and said, “You really don’t sweat much in Nia, do you?”  As I said, I was toweling off, my hair was wet, I was blind from sweat, and my glasses were fogged up.  And I said, “No, no YOU don’t.”  Because this person had stood behind me the entire class.  I never saw this student’s arms or legs or head.  So, in other words, this person didn’t move a lot, this person never lifted their arms up or out, nor did they kick out, so there wasn’t a lot of movement on their part so they didn’t sweat.  And that is fine, if that is what your goal is.  If you want to go to a cardio dance class and not sweat don’t move a lot.  If you are the type of person that sweats when you move and you decide to move in the class, then you will sweat.  It really is all about what you want for your body that day, during that class.

What do I wear?
Anything you want in order to feel comfortable.  Something you can move in and that you don’t mind being on the floor in.

Is Nia done barefoot?
Yes.  Nia is designed to be done barefoot.  Again, we do not jump – sometimes a trainer might get fancy and excited and include a little jump or two when s/he created the routine, but for the most part we do not jump.  We don’t typically twist on our feet, we pick up our feet.  There is a lot of foot work in Nia designed to stretch and strengthen the foot.  Nia believes that – while shoes can be lovely – they restrict the movement of the foot, so moving in bare feet allows the foot to move as it was designed.

What type of music is played in a Nia class?
All types of music.  Some routines run the gamut of tunes from rock to classical, some routines contain only one genre or one artist but the music for Nia as a whole varies.  You can click here and click around if you would like to hear some samples of the actual music in some of our routines.

We had been trained to think we have to move fast with high jumps up and down (impact) in order to get a “good” workout and in order to sweat. But if you stand with your feet in A stance (slightly wider than your shoulders) and do squats for three minutes, you might get a little sweaty. You will have done an INTENSE exercise, but not one that is high impact. Nia is not high impact, yet it can be intense.  People who do the moves in their bodies way, always come up to me and say what a great workout they just had in Nia.  The routines are created from movements that the body was designed to do, but Nia knows that not everyone’s body can move that way so dancers are encouraged to move in their own body’s way.  And with that in mind individuals get the workout they need.

Above I mentioned sweating in a Nia class, well, it could be you do sweat when you workout, but it could be that you are taking a Nia class in the middle of your work day or you are meeting friends for lunch after class so you don’t CHOOSE to move a lot and you want to take it easy – that is perfectly acceptable.  It is perfect to dance how you want to/how you are able to at that time.
