Going On Five Years Of Good Things

Posted by terrepruitt on February 6, 2017

We are doing our Goodie Jar again this year.  Right now it is a divided bowl.  On one side there is paper which we can write the good things on and pens.  On the other side is where we are putting our notes.  It is getting full.  At the end of last year it seemed like we were not adding many good things.  It probably didn’t help that my dad died and we were shocked and thrust into having to do a lot of things we had never thought of and things that took up a lot of time and energy.  But also it could be that the goodie jar got overlooked.  Like many of us, my husband is a creature of habit and he claims his habit, regarding the good things jar, consists of it looking like it did when we very FIRST did it and having it be in the same exact spot.  And for ME, that is an overlooking type of habit.  With the pitcher in the same spot all year long – for me, it tends to blend into the surroundings and I don’t see it.  Ya know, like that item that you have to take to your friend the next time you meet, so you put it near the door.  But after a week you begin to ignore it.  You don’t really see it there any longer, it blends into the surroundings.  So when you finally leave the house to meet your friend you totally forget the item.  Having it there was supposed to remind you, but it became so normal for it to be there, it did nothing to help you remember.  So I like to switch it up.  I like to change the vessel that holds the good things.  I thought keeping it on the peninsula in the kitchen was good because we would see it.  And with it being different it would attract our attention.  Well, at the end of the year it got kinda over shone by other Christmas decorations.  So this year we started out with it on the coffee table in the living room.  It is pretty in our faces.  But as I said, it is getting full.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitI am trying to decide what to do.  I am trying to decide on something else to keep the notes in.  Or I might just move some of the notes into another vessel and keep using the bowl for now.  I have so many pretty dishes that are seldom used so having them out with good things in them makes me happy.  I might move it off the coffee table for now.  If so, I do plan on moving it back during the year so that it is in our faces and we remember.  Sometimes it is easier to remember to make a note of a good thing.  Sometime it is helpful if there is a reminder or a prompt.

Either way, I am happy to continue this little project that we started years ago.  This will be our fifth year.  For us we put anything any it that makes us smile.  I think I saw my hubby put a receipt from dinner in there.  I don’t know what he wrote, but I am guessing it had to do with the nice dinner we had.  I was going to put a Dove chocolate wrapper in there.  They have sayings on them, so I saved it and I was going to write on it, but it got mistaken for trash and thrown away.  But the idea is that you can put whatever you want in your jar.

When I was commenting about it on a friend’s post someone asked if I date my notes.  Sometimes I do.  Like the other day when I was excited we had 18 people in Nia and 16 people in stretch class.  I put the date on that note.  But when I was looking at my cats and happy that they are so sweet and I feel lucky to have them, I wrote a note about it, but I didn’t date it.  A receipt or a ticket stub is going to have a date, but a candy wrapper would not.  It is whatever you want.  However you want to document the things that make you smile now and that will make you smile when you read them at the end of the year.

I am thankful to my friend Uptown Girl Denver for posting the practice on her Facebook page back in 2013.  I don’t think she is doing it any longer, but we are still enjoying the practice.

Are you doing a Goodie Jar this year?  What do you use for your “jar”?  What do you use for your notes?

Goodie Jar – Check In #43

Posted by terrepruitt on December 27, 2013

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYo, Gentle YogaSo this is our last Goodie Jar check in.  It is #43 because I didn’t start until February and I missed five throughout the year.  My five misses were just posting, I missed posting a check-in but I have been filling my “jar” all year round.

I was talking to my friend and she asked what I was going to do with them after I read them all and I hadn’t thought of that.  I figured I would just throw them away.  She is much more organized than I am and she is going to save hers in her “save box”.  She has a box that she puts stuff in all year.  What doesn’t fit doesn’t get saved.  Then after about five years she empties five boxes into ziplock bags and puts them in a larger container.  So she has many of her precious memories saved all nicely and neatly.  I was very impressed.  My memories; cards, ticket stubs, cruise cards, room keys, etc. are stashed in nooks and crannies all over the house.  So she is going to save hers.  Because she has a place to put them.  I don’t have a place.

I might scan them, but I’m not sure I will make time for that.  Whatever I end up doing with the notes of good things from my good thing jar I know I had a great time making note of the good things.  And I know I will enjoy reading them.  My jar has gotten so full I have been pushing the papers down.

I hope you have a full jar.  Full of all the good things that have happened to you in 2013.  I wish you a very happy and healthy 2014.  Thanks for being here.

Goodie Jar – Check In #33

Posted by terrepruitt on October 11, 2013

Hey!  Yay!  Two Fridays so far in October, two Goodie Jar – Check Ins!  Yay!  I do put things in my jar at least once a week, but there have been a couple of times when I forgot to post the check-in.  At this time I am writing the check in on Thursday because I have a Nia call I want to participate in on Friday.  I think I might get so involved in the call and its topic I will forget to post my check in.

So, how is it going?  On last week’s check in a friend of mine commented that her jar would be over flowing because her daughter just had a daughter.  First grand baby cute.  Not everyone has such a huge GOOD THING.  But that is kinda the point.  The HUGE good things get document and noted in other ways . . . so sometimes it is the jar that reminds us of the little things.

Of course, we can still write down the big things and put them in the jar.  Anything you want.  Anything that will make you smile when you read it and say, “Yeah, that is/was a good thing!”

May your Good Thing Jar overflow!

I have already posted this, but I when I opened Facebook a minute ago I saw I was tagged in a status.  I just had to add it to this post because to me it is a GOOD THING!  Ha, ha, ha, ha!  Thanks, Danielle!

Jimmy Fallon has Ylvis on Late Night doing a “live” version of The Fox!

And, if you want you can hear for yourself that Ylvis is Correct . . . . he has “what the fox say” down pat!

A Good Thing To Do Before Bed

Posted by terrepruitt on April 4, 2013

I have such wonderful Nia students.  One day I was talking to one of my students and she shared with me something she and her husband are doing before bed.  She said that they each share THREE good things that happened throughout the day.  Now this is just like the good thing jar idea in that the “good thing” is up to the person doing the sharing.  It can be anything you think of as a good thing.  You could say you heard your favorite song on the radio, saw a hummingbird, had a door held open for you, held a door open for someone else, you attended a Nia class . . . . whatever you want.  The “Good Thing” is up to you.  The idea is to help the day end on a positive note.  And it could lead to a nice conversation with whomever you are doing it with.  If you are doing it by yourself it could allow you to remember more good things about your day.  Whatever the situation it is a nice positive way to end the day.  Three good things is a beautiful thought to fall asleep on.

It could be particularly helpful in a stressful time.  Often when something is causing stress we tend to think about it a lot.  For me the quiet time as I am falling asleep is prime thinking time.  Is it for you?  With thinking time the mind can easily go to the stressful thought.  But if you have spent a little time with three good things maybe the good has pushed the stress off to a corner.  Falling asleep on a positive note seems like it would help you have a good sleep.  Sleep is a great tool in handling stress.  It could be you are happily thinking about your good things as you drift off.  Could be, if you have a partner you are talking about good things with, your partners good things are on your mind.

It also seems like this fun exercise would be good for people who tend to think of the negative instead of the positive.  This would help direct the negative attention to positive and shift the energy.  We all have things going on in our lives that we could dwell on and conduct negative thoughts and energy, so having to think about positive and good things that happened throughout the day and talk about three of them . . . that can really get the good stuff flowing.  Not thinking about the negative side of things can really work wonders.

I really like this idea.  I am looking forward to reading all the good things at the end of the year that I have document throughout the year, but this is a way to keep that “good thing” idea at the forefront.  This can provide “instant” gratification and help shift energy from negative and stressful to positive and peaceful.

Manifest the positive by sharing the good things!

What do you think?

Goodie Jar – Check In #6

Posted by terrepruitt on March 8, 2013

Recently my husband took a couple of days off of work.  It is good to take some days off to just relax, I think.  It great to take days off when you have something planned, but sometimes it does the body, mind, and spirit REAL good when you just take the day off with no plans.  Just sit around and relax or work on a project.

Well, on one of the days he had off he decided to attend one of my Nia classes.  I was so excited.  It was great to have my hubby there.  For a moment I thought I would be nervous, but then I realized that he would be fine and I would just be doing what I always do.  And that is what we did.  He moved, I led, and we went out to breakfast after.

The whole morning was such a wonderful treat to me.  It definitely is in a Good Thing worthy of my Goodie Jar!

How is your good things jar doing?

Goodie Jar – Check In #1

Posted by terrepruitt on February 1, 2013

This is my first “Goodie Jar” or “Good Things Jar” check-in.  Where we are putting a note of “good things” that have happened into a jar to read on December 31, 2013.  The idea of this — for me is to remember to notice the good things that happen.  No matter how big, no matter how small.  It is to also serve as a reminder that even if or when there are things that might not be considered things that are a cause for celebration going on there are still good things happening.  Have this jar will be a fun way to review some of the good stuff that has happened throughout the year!

If you are participating you don’t have to share what is in your jar unless you want to tells us your good thing.

So far I have two things in my “jar” and they are both Nia related.  How about you?  Do you have good things in your jar?
