Sneaky Monday

Oh my! I was just about to go to bed. Yes, up late as usual. I got caught up watching Calendar Girls. I had never seen it even though it is from 2003. So cute. I realized I didn’t post a placeholder and there is no way I can turn on my computer at this hour. I would never get to bed! So I am using my iPad which does not have all the needed functionality as a computer. Not all websites – and WordPress is one of them – behave noemally on the iPad. But this is just a place holder for you that want to check in.

I will be back to let you know I did my Ten Minute Workout. I will have to wait until I get back from my Nia Class to hear how you are doing with those ten exercises. Can’t wait to hear.

Ha!  Ok, I came right home after my San Jose Nia class.  And I only sat for about five minutes then I came upstairs and did my ten minute workout.  I wanted to get it done before it got too hot.  It is supposed to be really hot in the San Francisco Bay Area today.  I am not a fan of the heat so I know that if I wanted until it was hot I wouldn’t want to do it.  So I got it done, about an hour ago.  But I was replying to my friend’s comment.  As you can see my reply is very long . . . . it took me awhile.

Here I am, I am done and I am checking in.

So . . . . . . where are you?  How are things going for you?  How is your weather?

    I so loved that movie, Calendar Girls. Glad you watched it. I want an iPad…they look like such fun!!! I have Nia at 9 a.m. this morning. Focus is Move, Explore, Create (one of the triads for Principle #4 FreeDance).

    On Saturday, I went to a major health club here in Wisconsin to attend a Nia Jam. While I was waiting for the rest of the crew to show up, I sat in the “juice bar” and watched the folks on the machines. There must’ve been 1000 machines — everything from stationary bikes to stairmasters to some other menacing looking machine. I found it quite boring actually…staying in place the entire time…not moving all of the body, but I must say there was one young woman who was B.U.F.F. I mean WOW. She must be a body builder. Her arms and legs were fat-free and very muscular. I started to compare myself to her and wished that I had weights at home and then I slapped myself. Even if I did have weights at home I would probably not use them. I like to dance. I have little 2 lbs weights though and my plan is to start dancing (practicing my routines) while using the weights. Even if it’s just 10 minutes.

    You inspire me.


    • On Sundays at 11:00 pm there is often nothing on TV for us. Which really is perfect because we SHOULD turn off the TV and go to bed. But we usually don’t. Last night we were just getting home and we were unwinding and doing some things. When the movie came on my plan was to watch it just for a half hour or so, but I got caught up in it. I knew it was the true story of the women that did that, but I don’t know that I knew why they did it.

      I did Sanjana this morning and I used the original focus. It was so nice.

      I bet the Jam was awesome! Fun! (One of these days . . . . . )

      I used to think that machines were “stupid” because most of them don’t work multiple muscles. But then I realized that there can be a place for that. Sometimes it is very desirable to not move all the body or it is even necessary. If you have a specific goal of hypertrophy or strength for a certain muscle then machines can be perfect for that. OR, if you have an injury and you need to either really concentrate on the injury body part OR take it out of the exercise equation until it gets better, then machines are great. Also, for some people that is the time they used to think and “meditate” or for some they can use the machine to actually concentrate on the muscle they are working. The machines might not be something you would like. I understand that some people like them and to me they are better than no movement at all.

      I believe that it is good to do more than one form of exercise/fitness. I believe that aerobic exercise, strength training, and stretching is all neccesary for balance health. I personally like to do different forms of exercise. But I also think that excelling is one requires a lot more work and time than most of us have if we are still doing the other two, so that is why it seems we end up giving up on one of them.

      You are a fitness professional so I know you know the risks of dancing with weights. I am going to state some information for the benefit of any readers. I don’t recommend dancing with weights, even little ones like two pound weights because in Nia we move in an authentic way and allow the music to move us, and when we have weights in our hands (or around our wrists or ankles) we should be aware of them and actually move in specific ways and patterns to receive the full benefit of the weight. While an arm was designed to move in a backwards windmill pattern the joint was not designed to do so holding a weight. Even a light one COULD result in an injury if the wrist were to twist in the “wrong” way. The shoulder is designed for MOBILITY, not STABILITY and a weight would add less stability. I did post about Wearing Weights During Nia. So, Jill, sweetie, my friend, please be very careful.

      Let me also say, you have often stated that you think weights and machines (weight machines and treadmills) are boring, that it seems as if the people doing them are not mentally engaged in the activity. Well, I would bet that most people that lift weights and actually have something to show for it would tell you that they didn’t do it mindlessly. They actually thought about it as they were doing it. They concentrated on what they were doing. As you know, since we like to connect the body and the mind in Nia, it CAN be connected when using weights. And just dancing with weights on would take the connection of the “weight training” away. Just PULEASE be careful, I know two pounds is practically nothing, but I believe it could allow for greater risk of injury.

      I was hoping that having a little ten minute exercise would encourage people. I mean, most of us have 10 minutes. Posting here and having daily contact has encourage me.

    I’ve fallen behind on you. Sorry, I had surgery last week so I’m still on restrictions which is making me crazy as I am entered in a 10k in a month — I’m nervous!
    I love that you’re posting each day, the 10 minute thing.
    So, here… the weather is 95 plus and sunny. Perfect!
    I feel like I should be emailing you… hmmm.


    • Yes! You should be e-mailing me. Tell me about the surgery (WHAT!?!?!) and trip details!

      Posting everyday is not easy. I think I’m only doing it through June. We will see.

      I do not like weather that has temps above 85 so I do not think that 95 is perfect?
