Google the Problem

Nia teaches me a lot of things. So does my husband. He is my computer technician. As you probably know with computers when something isn’t working correctly it isn’t always an easy fix. When he suspects what the issue is he can plan for it and figure it out and fix it. But sometimes something comes up that is not familiar. The first thing he asks me is “What have you done?”  The second thing he asks is if I “Googled it”. Two times within the last nine months something has been troubling my computer. The first thing was an “Active Desktop”. The second was a HUGE e-mail. They annoyed me enough I was desperate to find relief. This time I remembered that whenever I have something wrong with my computer my techno-geek asks me if I Googled the problem. So that is what I did.

The Active Desktop “thing” happened when I wanted to save a picture from an e-mail to my computer. It was a Nia e-mail and a Nia promotional picture so I wanted to save it so that I could help in promoting the Bay Area Nia event. When I went to save it my computer asked me if I wanted to make it an active desktop item. I believe I was in so much of a rush I didn’t read the whole question, I saw “desktop” and said yes. I was thinking it was just asking if I wanted to SAVE it to my desktop. When I said yes it caused this “thing” to continue to happen with my computer. Every time I clicked from icon to icon or from document to document or webpage to webpage, my screen would go blank for a second then it would flash back up and continue on with its task. I put up with that for months. Every time my monitor went blank, my stomach would sink because I thought my computer had died. But then it would flash back up. At one point I did “Google” how to fix it, but the directions did not match with what I was seeing in my files. But after feeling sick for months I finally decided that I couldn’t take it any longer and if I broke my computer worse than it was so be it. I looked at the directions again and just kept looking and poking into my system until I found what the instructions were telling me I would find. I fixed it.

Then a month or so ago, I tried to send an e-mail. I didn’t realize it was as big as it was until my e-mail program kept showing something in my outbox. Well, it wouldn’t send it, it wouldn’t delete it, it wouldn’t do anything with that one e-mail but the rest of my e-mail was working fine. So for about a month I just put up with it, thinking there was nothing to do. But . . . I did it a second time. (Eyes rolling). As I was scanning the document I thought, “Remember to check it before you send it.” But as always when I am on my computer I got distracted and by the time I finished typing the e-mail and pressed send I had forgotten to check the size. It was huge and it wouldn’t send. So it was stuck again. Now I had TWO stuck e-mails.

So again I turn to “Google” and I found something that explained what I had to do. Now . . . keep in mind that I am pretty much a chicken when it comes to messing with my computer because I know if I break it I will be without it. So I only do things that I am confident about. The solution to fixing the e-mail was to disconnect it from the internet. I was completely comfortable with doing that because when I had a corporate job I used to do that all the time in order to connect my work laptop. So . . . .I disconnected the internet from my computer. My e-mail program had no way to try to send the e-mail (that was too big to send) so it allowed me to delete it. Yay. No more e-mail that can’t be sent and a message coming up saying “Do you want to exit with an e-mail yet to be sent?”

So . . . my point is there are things in life you can “Google”, especially if it has to do with a computer problem. Did you know that? It took me years to learn that many people post answers to computer issues. Its awesome.

Sleep Is Important

Ever since I started teaching Nia I think that I have gotten more sleep than when I had a job with a large company.  Do you get enough sleep?  But what is “enough” sleep?  I think some people think it is like a badge of honor if they can “get by” with a few hours sleep at night.  I think we might forget that sleep is when our bodies do their repair work.

While we sleep our bodies rebuild and repair.  Our brains, while they are busy performing these tasks actually gets its rests and gets ready for the next day.  It is believed that healthy adults need between 7 and 9 hours sleep a night.  Some sources say that getting even just one less hour a night can possibly affect our ability to think properly.  Also it could affect your cardiovascular health and ability to fight infections in an adverse way.  Your energy level and ability to concentrate might be less than desirable due to an inefficient amount of rest.

More and more studies are starting to point to sleep and the lack of it affecting our appetite.  There are hormones involved that are produced while we sleep and their production is reduced when we don’t get enough sleep. These hormones control the feelings of hunger and of being full.  So when we don’t get enough sleep it could result in being constantly hungry and not feeling satisfied.

Our mood is also connected to the sleep we get.  Many people feel irritable and short tempered when they do not get enough sleep.

As previously stated research has concluded that a healthy adult needs between 7 and 9 hours sleep in order to function at their optimum, but everyone is different and the exact amount varies.  Researchers at a California university found that a there is a rare gene in less than 3% of the population that allows for those people to get by on less than 6 hours sleep.  The kind of says that probably 97% of the population is not getting the sleep that their bodies require to function properly.  It is believed that most of the population survive on less than 6 hours sleep a night.

So, if you think sleeping less is something to boast about or if you think that sleep is a waste of time maybe you can try getting more sleep and see how you feel.  Then maybe all these studies that are out there will be viewed in a different brighter light, through less sleepy eyes.

Nia is Play

Nia, at one point, was called NIA or Neuromuscular Integrative Action.  Neuromuscular pertains to both nerves and muscles.  Our movements involve both muscles and nerves.   In a Nia cardio class, we stimulate and activate both during the workout.   While leading a group of elder adults in a mobility-enhancement exercise (in a job unrelated to Nia) an observer commented, “It is like kindergarten.”  My response was, “Yes, and isn’t it fun?”  As I continued to watch these 90+ year olds toss around the ball, she said, “Yeeaaaahhhh!”

Adults just lose it.  The stigma that comes with adults playing just to play is too great.  Yes, there are competitive teams that adults can join, and those that do are exercising their inner child and having fun, but what about playing just to play.

If a suited adult were to skip down the cubbed corridor they probably would be put on leave of absence.  If an adult were to be alone, without children, and were to walk down the street balancing on the curb, they would receive stares from others.  Breaking out in song is only acceptable for children and actors in musicals.  As adults society does not generally allow us to let out our inner child in everyday life without thinking we are a little off balance.

That is where Nia comes in.  In a Nia class we get to play.  Also our dance is something that allows you to release that inner child.  Nia invites and encourages you to skip, jump, run, walk, shout out, crawl, and move as you did when you were a child.  In a non-judgmental freely accepting atmosphere we get to play.

Does that sound like something you could enjoy?  Doesn’t it sound like something your body longs to participate in again?  Come to a Nia class and find out.

Comments: How does one learn Nia?  If the classes are drop in but if I have never done this before how will I    know the moves?  Do you have classes for beginners?  If so, when do they start?  How many classes must one attend in order to learn all of the moves? What is the nearest cross street to your location on Lincoln Ave.?

My reply:

Dear Lovely Spirit Interested in Nia:

Do you like to move?  Do you like to dance?  Do you care what others think of you?  You are a Lovely Being and I invite you to let go of caring about that.

Nia is not about “the moves”, Nia is about fun.  And moving and learning and not caring what others think.  Do you think you might like something like that?  Do you think you might like to remove your shoes and just get down and shake your groove thing?  What makes Nia different than other exercise classes (well, ONE of the things that makes it different) is that we don’t judge.  If you are not causing yourself or others harm then it is ok.

If one person goes left, and the other person goes right—as long as there is not a collision—it really does not matter.  We are not performing.  Nigel, Mia, and Adam are not there.  It is just us.  Those who want to move.  We have fun.  We don’t mind if and when we don’t do it “right”.

You, Lovely Spirit, will know the moves because you will be listening to the best, most perfect, most honest teacher there is—-YOU!  YOU will be in charge.  You will be the one that tells you what to do and how much to do.  I might say, “raise your arm” and your arm might say, “No Lovely Spirit, not today.” And you will be moving PERFECTLY because you will have listened, and I and everyone in the class will know that you respected yourself and did what YOUR body needed.  That is part of what makes Nia great.

ALL of my classes are for beginners.  All of my classes are for experts. Because all of us are beginners and experts.  Nia is about YOUR BODY’S WAY!

Come and see.  Try not to be concerned about learning the moves.  If you have looked at Nia’s 52 Moves, and are thinking about having to know all of them—don’t!  We move as the body was designed to move so when you come you will be amazed at how your body just moves on its own.  And because of that,
it will feel fabulous!

The NEAREST cross street is Garfield (it is where Rotten Robbies is), the “biggest one” with a light is Coe.  The studio is between Coe and Willow in Willow Glen.  Does that help?

I want you to come and feel comfortable.  Nia is about JOY and comfort and feeling good.  It is not about “moves” and “perfection” and performing.  We listen to the music and I lead a routine, but you are not required to do exactly what I do.  You are encouraged to move as YOUR BODY WANTS TO MOVE!

Gratitude List

Often times during my day I think of things I am thankful for, I am always thankful when I remember to turn OFF the alarm in the morning before opening the door, having the heart-stopping-blare of the house alarm is really no way to start the day.  I am always thankful when I find my keys when I didn’t put them in the correct place.  I am always glad when I drop my toast and it lands butterside up.  🙂

I want to share a few things in my life I am gratful for, my hope is that you would join me and make your own list and share it here with me.  I am only listing six, but please feel free to list as many things as you are grateful for and share as much about each thing you would like.

1–I am grateful for my hubby, he is the best.
2–I am grateful for my family, they are awesome.
3–I am grateful for my hubby’s family.  While yes, I consider them my family I know that I am lucky to have such a great
“in-law”  family so I needed to list them separate.
4–I am grateful to be able to teach Nia, sharing something I love with others.
5–I am grateful for my friends.  I am very blessed to have some of the greatest friends ever.
6–I am grateful for my health, and will work to keep it.

I am thinking that many of you will be able to list some of these very things, but I also know that some of you have some very exciting things in your lives and maybe you would like to list them as something you are grateful for.

Oh, and I could forget, I am grateful for you taking your time to read my blog.

The Difference Project

As a Nia teacher I am entitled to listen in on a monthly Nia Teacher Continuing Education call.   These teleconference calls are included in the cost of licensing.  So I am familiar with teleconference calls and that they have value.  I received an e-mail from “The Difference” and it was an invitation to listen in on a teleconference call.  The calls were happening at times that I was unavailable so I was unable to listen in on the live call.  But they recorded the calls and sent out an e-mail instructing us how to listen to the call.

This is a service.  Regardless of how you feel about teleconference calls, you have to know that people sign up for them and pay money to listen.  You have to know that all types of information is distributed this way.  Regardless of whether you would have paid for a call that has to do with ‘Re-energise & Fall In Love All Over Again’, you have to know that others would.  So The Difference provided a type of service.

I was not told that I could not share the information, but I don’t want to get involved in possibly disclosing something I shouldn’t have so I am not going to get into specifics.  I am certainly not going to spend my time contacting “The Difference” to see what I can disclose.  My purpose for this post is to continue the conversation about “The Difference”.  So many people are saying it is a scam and I am not ready to conclude that.  I have no proof that it is.  This is me sharing that they are doing “SOMETHING”. They offered a call that might not have value to all, but it does have value.

This phone call goes along with my original assessment that being involved as a paying collaborator on The Difference is a type of “self-improvement”/”self-help” thing.  In the call Jacqueline Bignell the Founder of The Difference™ interviewed two Australian Difference Makers.  One was Heather Yelland (her claim per her website: “Australia’s leading female personal development and mindset specialist”) and the other was Lisa Ippolito, a Neuro-Linguistic Programming Practitioner.

They brought up the main point of loving oneself will assist in the enabling of loving fully and of attracting love back.  It is not a new concept and more and more people are starting to talk about it.  I just read a post today that was about the very same thing.   The blog was saying that is what he saw in the movie  “Eat, Pray, Love”.  That Elizabeth Gilbert the author of the book came to that realization.  Funny how all of this connected in one day.  This type of thinking is what Jacqueline is trying to promote with her project The Difference.

The conference call that they did is just an example of what they are doing to help this “opening of your heart” type of thinking along.  Again, they are doing something, they are providing something of value.  I didn’t even become a collaborator and I still got something out of it.

Well, DUH! It Was MY Fault

I wasn’t feeling well, something was bothering me, but I let it go for a while (months).  Finally something else — a new thing — made me go to the doctor.  She told me I had heartburn.  She also said I was congested.  I laughed when she said that because that would be the normal state for an allergy sufferer.  I didn’t believe her regarding the heartburn.  It helped that she ordered some tests.  Which made me feel better.

Because I did not believe her I started looking things up online specifically regarding heartburn.  Before my appointment I looked up my symptoms and basically with that route I had everything from a simple infection to coronary disease.  (Eyes rolling)  So looking at it from the diagnosis to the symptoms I was shocked.

I don’t eat spicy foods.  Ask any one of my Spicy-Is-My-Middle-Name Yelper Friends, they ALL know I don’t do spicy—not even black pepper—at all.  Also, I had never heard of coughing and shortness of breath as being a symptom of heartburn.  Also, I thought heartburn arrived after you ate and left in a few hours, I didn’t know it could last for a week.

I was almost convinced that it was age.  I was disappointed thinking it might be that chronic kind of heartburn.

So I researched. What did I find?  In general there are two types of heartburn, one you get every once awhile (or often)* or there is GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease).  GERD usually occurs because of an actually physiological situation.  Gastroesophageal reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) — the muscle connecting the esophagus with the stomach can’t do its job of keeping stomach acids from flowing back up.

*(I’m seeing information saying if you have heartburn once a month is is considered mild, once a week moderate, and every day severe.  So to me if you have it, your body is off balance and needs to be kept in balance to not have it at all!)

But I am just talking about heartburn that is NOT actual GERD.  So what are the causes?

Some foods:  onions, peppermint, chocolate, citrus fruits or juices, tomatoes, fried and fatty foods, alcohol, coffee, sugar, legumes, dairy foods, carbonated beverages,spicy foods, black pepper

Practices: smoking, eating large meals, eating before exercises, eating before going to bed

Lifestyle: unhealthy stress

Other things: tight clothes, bending over, obesity

I realized that I was the cause of this.  Totally and completely I take responsibility for the imbalance of acid that was going on in my body.  It was my practices.  Due to my current schedule I always found myself realizing I need to eat and it always ended up right before I worked out.  I would GULP down my coffee in the morning, eat late into the night.  I had just began eating a lot more onions.  Just started eating beans and tomatoes.  I was making my system unbalanced. Well, DUH!  I will also share with you that I was totally stressing myself out over doing my routines.  I wanted to do them perfect so I would stress out over that.  So not the entire idea of Nia.

So needless to say I did not fill my prescription for whatever the doctor prescribed because I can fix this by changing my habits. The video I shared in my last post also helped me realize what was really going on.  It was posted to FB the same week I was learning all of this.  To me that helped a lot.  It reminded me that my body is programmed to be in balance and I—me, my fault, my diet, my habits, my practice, my lifestyle was the thing that was making my body work so hard it could not even manage it.

Balance of Acid and Alkaline

Nia emphasizes balance.  Balance between yin and yang.  Balance between feminine and masculine.  Balance between strength and flexibility.  Our bodies systems work to keep balance.  I found this video extreme enlightening.  Even though the title makes it sound like it is all about how diet soda causes weight gain, it is not.

The video says our bodies have to have the right pH level, which is the acid/alkaline balance.  It explains that the body will keep the balance with several mechanism.  The body must be in balance or we will die.  What it goes on to explain is that the typical American Diet and life style has a tendency to make our bodies work really hard to keep that balance.  We eat too many acid producing foods and beverages and have fast pace lives that cause unhealthy stress.

It points out some of the foods that are acid forming and the ones that are not.  There are also examples of beverages given.  It goes onto explain that what happens to the body when it becomes to acidic is that is uses minerals to put the body back in balance.  The minerals are taken away from the other functions that the body needs them for. The video points out that while the United States has a high consumption of calcium rich foods, we have the worst bone health, because one of the minerals used to balance the body when it becomes to acidic is calcium.  Hmmm?  I wonder if that is why a lot of antacids have calcium in them.

The last minute or so is where they explain how diet soda causes weight gain.

The Five Basic Principles of the Body’s Way

In Nia there are five basic principles of the body’s way that we like to keep in mind. Listed here are just the highlights, for the details on each point you can visit the page on my website.

1—The Body Thrives on Dynamic Ease. Dynamic ease is somewhat comparable to muscle memory. When you are first learning a movement the challenge of doing so generally keeps you from being creative.

2—The Body Demands Balance. The body was built with balance in mind with body parts on each side.

3—The Body is Balanced in Yin and Yang. Both have a place in the body.

4—The Body’s Way Demands Simultaneous Mobility and Stability. The body’s joints allow for mobility and the muscles for stability.

5—The Body Itself Reveals the Body’s Way. Its very design instructs us on its use.

Also our bodies give us feedback both negative and positive. Both can be used to help guide our movements. Which ever is necessary Nia can help achieve the balance. Nia respects the body’s way and can successful assist in achieve balance in the body.

Lemon Tomato

Beautiful and sweet. I could have sworn the tag said lemon tomato. I don’t think we saved the tag. As you may know I just started eating tomatoes within the past couple of years. My mother-in-law grew Zebra Tomatoes and I started my tomato journey with them.

I have come to realize that I do not care for mushy tomatoes. I like them firm, maybe even on the just-before-ripe side. Also, I like them raw not cooked. So I was watching the tomatoes my Wonder-Hubby planted very carefully. Now, you also may know that I don’t know the first thing about gardening and ripe or not so I rely on my hubby to tell me. He is a fantastic gardener when he has time. He can make on-the-brink-of-death plants come back to life. I was watching the one tomato that was yellow very closely. But obviously not close enough. One afternoon while I was doing Nia in my living room I glanced outside and I noticed the tomato looked odd. I went to investigate, something had tasted our tomato. I was very sad.

I was wondering if taking it and cutting off the “tasted” portion was too gross. I hadn’t examined it to see how much damage had been done. I posted my sadness (either on FaceBook or Twitter) and other people said that they would eat it as long as you were able to cut off all the evidence of “tasting”. Once I assessed the damage and I concluded that whatever tasted it just peeled and poked a little so I cut the fruit in half making sure there was nothing on the half I was planning on eating. Then I cut it up and shared it with my hubby. It was sweet. I was surprised.

I looked online to see if I could find some information about them to post, but there are a lot more than I realized and now I am not sure which ones we have. They kind of look like Lemon Boy but I am not sure because they are much smaller. What do they look like to you? Do you know tomatoes? Whatever they are, they are very tasty. They are somewhat sweet and really taste more like fruit to me.

We wanted to grow Zebras but couldn’t find them. Which is somewhat good because now we have tried a new (to us) tomato. So many people grow tomatoes. Do you? What kind?
