Here’s To 2019

Posted by terrepruitt on December 31, 2018

So it is New Year’s Eve. We are about to enter into 2019. Wow! TWO THOUSAND NINETEEN! I am seeing a lot of different things on Facebook and the rest of the internet. Many people make resolutions. Many people pick words to motivate their new year or for them to live by. Some people pick phrases. There are so many things that so many people do. Along with the various things people do that I am seeing I am also seeing the various attitudes towards the exiting year. Some people are saying it was the worst year ever while some people are saying it was great. So many different things have transpired and we all have had different experiences. Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? Do you pick a word or a phrase to live by or guide your year? I don’t do any of that. I am just going gratefully into the New Year and hope to live it gracefully and gratefully. There are changes coming up, but there are every year, right? We just face ’em and do our best.

I would like to give you a virtual hug because you may be happy this year is ending and need it or you may be just fine, but most everyone enjoys a hug. I would also like to wish you a

Happy, Healthy, and

WONDERFUL 2019!

I know this is a video of our Christmas tree, and it is New Year’s Eve, but I thought it was sparkly and festive!

Blown Glass Ornament

Posted by terrepruitt on December 28, 2018

Here is a newly acquired ornament.  I think I bought it for my mom and dad.  It is a blown glass nativity scene.  It is sweet.

The last ornament picture for the last Friday Photo in December.

Merry Christmas 2018

Posted by terrepruitt on December 24, 2018

I am not a fan of blow up decorations. They just lie there all flat when the fan isn’t on. They make a lot of noise. I am just not a fan. But I loved this one. I thought it was pretty ingenious that the reindeer can eat without any mechanics, it is just air. We are busy with Christmas things so I thought I would just pop this up really quick and wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Crazy-Shaped 2018 Christmas Tree

Posted by terrepruitt on December 21, 2018

This year we bought our tree close to home. We went to a parking lot where they had set up a tree lot. We bought a tree there before and it was fine. So we thought we would try it again. I walked around and was trying to decide between three trees. Looked and looked – got it down to two trees. Looked some more and made a decision. Well, the funny thing about our tree that seemed like it needed a little grooming – it needed a lot of grooming. I think it might have just been cut open before we got there because A LOT of the branches were still “up”. I mean it is normal for branches to “fall”, but this one was a doozy. It has branches that stick out about a foot from the other ones. It is funny. But we like it.

Here is our 2018 Christmas Tree for my Friday Photo today.

Out With The Old, In With The New

Posted by terrepruitt on December 19, 2018

I have posted information about the programs that I teach under for the City of San Jose. At different times they had two versions of a “gym-like” program (Group Ex and then SJCITY Fit) where people could purchase an annual membership and attend all of the classes offered under the program at the participating community centers. There is also the program many seemed to be familiar with, where the city sends out a brochure listing all the classes available. The classes are taught in “sessions”.  You might want to take guitar lessons being offered for 10 weeks one night a week. You register for the class paying for the entire session, all 10 weeks. There is no make-up if you miss a class. This is the way that I have taken classes with the cities of San Jose, Santa Clara, and Campbell as long as I could take classes. I remember taking a babysitting class when I was young. The “gym-like” program was relatively new. It was a great program, but I am betting that most you reading this that are local didn’t even know about it. It seems like a fair job of promoting it was not done. It was impossible to use the internet to find any information about it and like, happens with all things when they don’t get properly promoted, they fail. The city has determined that the current version of the “gym-like” program – SJCITY Fit – is not sustainable so they are cancelling it.

There are members that take at least one class Monday through Friday. It was a great deal. The majority of the students that came to my class loved the program because when the math was done with them going to at least one class a day Monday through Friday, it was about 50 cents per class. So, yeah, it makes sense that the city wasn’t able to maintain that. But it is sad that the program could not attract more than 140 people. I keep thinking in a city with a population of over 1 million the program could have at least attracted 500 people.

But with so many different choices for the exerciser out there it really takes a strong desire and a concentrated effort to get the word out about exercises programs. So the city it moving some of the classes that were be held under SJCITY Fit into a hybrid of the leisure program (where students sign up for a session of classes). There are a multitude of things that are different under this program, so I will only be teaching Nia once a week on Tuesdays.

Now, in order to take Nia with me through the City of San Jose you have to sign up for the sesssion or “season”. So far there are two sessions/seasons on the books (Winter and Spring). They are both 10 classes each. I say classes because there are some weeks where there is not a class so it might end up being more than 10 WEEKS, but there are only 10 CLASSES. You can see more information on my site.

I am still teaching the yoga classes, one on Tuesdays at 10:30 am and one on Thursdays at 6:00 pm.

It is very sad that this program or a version of it was not salvageable by the city. So many of the consistent exercisers are moving off to other places, some I am afraid might stop exercise altogether. I will miss seeing them every week. I’ve been teaching Nia on Tuesdays for six years, on Thursdays for five years, and on Fridays for three years. Many students have been coming that long or even longer (on different days at the various places I have taught). I did write a post on the how long I have been teaching what.

I do hope to see some of my students taking part in the new program that is being offered. It might not have the convenience of SJCITY Fit, but it is still a great deal. The program will still offer 8 of the 12 classes that were offered under SJCITY Fit.

So, here is to a new chapter of San Jose Nia. I am looking at teaching at a studio right down the street on Union from where I teach now. I am hoping to teach my Thursday Nia class and my Thursday stretch class. So stay tuned.

We have such a great little Nia community in San Jose I hope we can keep dancing together!  Here’s to the New Year and to a new chapter of San Jose Nia.

Do you take classes through your city’s exercise program?

Ideas: Gift Tracking, Decorating, Wrapping, And More!

Posted by terrepruitt on December 17, 2018

There might be a few things you might want to be reminded of this year.

One thing I am already doing is starting a list for next year. That might sound odd since it is not even Christmas, but it is close enough that it is too late for some things. So, I have a folder on my computer that is “2019 Christmas” and I am starting to put ideas in it. I just saw something on Twitter that I want to make as gifts next year. There is no time to do it this year so it will have to be next year. So I have added it to my 2019 Christmas folder. And, this past year, I was even saavy enough to look at my 2018 Christmas folder in July because I thought if I had wanted to make something this year that I documented in my folder and I had waited until December it would be too late.  (There were no notes in there about making something that needed to be done so far in advance.)  Hopefully next year I will remember to look WAY before December because this craft will take a while!

My gift list that I keep all year long is proving to be a great thing. It is really important for me to note WHERE I have stashed the gift because I don’t have one location where I keep everything!

And for things you still have time for:Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFit, City of San Jose Exercise Classes

The card Christmas Tree and/or the Book Christmas Tree.

The scraps of wrapping paper that can become packaging for bags instead of tissue paper.  You can shred it or just use it as you would tissue paper.  And some ways to be perhaps even more “Green“.

GiveBackBox. If you are like me you are getting a lot of boxes delivered over this season.  And I posted about the company that helps people give back.

How do you wear your scarf?  There are accessory ways and a WARM way!

A quick way to use up the persimmons, make Persimmon Salsa.

I hope some of these things will help you out this Holiday Season.  We are moving into the homestretch with Christmas around the corner.  I hope you are all able to find some joy in the season.

What do you during the Holidays?  Is there a tradition you have?  Is there a tip or two you want to share?

Unicorn Ornament

Posted by terrepruitt on December 14, 2018

Here is one of my new Christmas Tree ornaments that I believe we got in Capitola during one of our visits. This is the new kind I seem to be collecting. They are so pretty. The ones I tend to like are decorated with beads, “pearls”, sparkly things, and dangles. Here is a unicorn ornament for my Friday Photo.

Shallots Are Divine

Posted by terrepruitt on December 12, 2018

I cook with shallots. Not often because they just seem so expensive. I have put them in soups and even in a “salsa”. Recently I met my friends out at a restaurant. I had already eaten dinner but they had ordered a salad and I asked to try the shallot. I had thought I hadn’t had a raw one before, but here I am looking at my blog and I see my Persimmon Salsa post where I used shallots. I had tried them raw but just forgot. Well, last Friday I was at a loss as to what to cook for dinner and I saw that we had macaroni and cheese. Yes, the boxed kind from Kraft. Sometimes that is about all my brain can handle to make for dinner. I decided that was what we were having for dinner. We had just received an organic produce box that morning and it had shallots in it. Doesn’t that make perfect sense? Organic produce and boxed mac-n-cheese? No, of course not, but sometimes that is what happens. I decided to put some shallots in the mac-n-cheese.

Since the macaroni and cheese was going to be dinner I felt it needed to be more than just mac-n-cheese. I pretty much ALWAYS add a bell pepper. We rarely just eat plain mac-n-cheese. But we needed more. So I put some chicken in it. I sauteed some chopped shallot and then added the chicken. I sauteed the bell pepper, too. It all was added to the mac-n-cheese. Well, the shallots just elevated the heck out of that macaroni and cheese. It was really good.

There isn’t much nutrient-wise to a shallot, but they really have a great flavor. I love onions and garlic, but shallots are so much better. I knew that, but, as I said, I don’t buy them often because of their expense. But I might start buying them more often because they are so delicious.

According to the USDA 10 grams, about one tablespoon of chopped shallots has this:

Wiki says: “The shallot is a type of onion, specifically a botanical variety of the species Allium cepa. The shallot was formerly classified as a separate species, A. ascalonicum, a name now considered a synonym of the currently accepted name.

Its close relatives include the garlic, leek, chive, and Chinese onion.”

I love them. How about you? Do you like shallots? Do you cook with shallots?

Easy Gifts To Give And Receive

Posted by terrepruitt on December 10, 2018

As we get older it seems like we end up with a lot of stuff. And we come to a point where we want to limit the amount of stuff we get as we try to thin out some of the stuff we have. I have found that many of the people on my gift list don’t want any more stuff. The super cute affordable stuff that really doesn’t have a use or a purpose. There are always things people need and want, but I am talking about the stuff that is fun to buy, fun to give, and even fun to receive, but doesn’t really have a use. I still give those types of gifts when I see something and it just SCREAMS a person’s name. Ya know, sometimes things just belong with a person, but I try not to go out and seek that stuff. For many people I try to give them consumable stuff. Things that are great because they are a tangible gift, but also great because they go away soon and don’t end up taking up room for too long. And somethings are so easy to give because everyone uses them and some are easy to give because almost everyone likes them.

Here are a few things that can be considered nice gifts but don’t hang around for a long time:

-Fancy olive oils and vinegars

We just recently bought some very yummy olive oil and vinegars. I even posted about it because it was so good. And I loved it so much I did buy a bottle for our neighbors! There are so many flavors of flavored olive oil I bet you could find a perfect one for everyone on your list. And that is not even considering the vinegar. We bought some that is so tasty I want to drink it.

-Soap

You may know from past posts that I think fancy soap is a great idea as a gift. And I think that started after I received a nice bar as a gift or it could have started when I had discovered some delicious soap I used to buy, either way, if you like some fancy soap that is not something made commercially I bet someone on your list would enjoy it too.

Do I really even need to say anything about candles? No, but I will. There are so many types of candles and most of them can be burned and they disappear. I did recently post about the electronic kind. While they are an awesome gift they don’t belong in the consumable category.

-Homemade cookies, toffee, fudge and things of that nature

One year I made cookies for people and I was so surprised at their reaction. They were so grateful to have received homemade goodies. Each recipient commented on the time spend to make them and they were so very grateful. And, unfortunately, I don’t think I have done it since because – yeah, it does take a lot of time. I have made nuts and toffee before. I posted the recipe for the nuts here and here. I got the original nut recipe from my same friend that gave me soap one year. I have also posted about the easy to make toffee.

-Note cards

Ok, this one is for a specific person obviously. Not everyone writes notes, most people don’t even send cards any more so a box of note cards will not be a good gift for most people, but you might have at least one person on your list that writes and sends mail.

-Lotions

Most lotion users can always need more lotion. And often times, even though they have their favorite they are excited to try something new and different. So help them get a new favorite by buying them some lotion!

-Coffees and Teas

Coffee is expensive so who, among coffee drinkers, wouldn’t love to receive a pound of something yummy. And tea . . . again, just like the lotion users, they probably have their favorite, but there are so many out there you can help them experience something new. Just try really, really, really hard to NOT buy a mug to go with the coffee or tea. You know mugs, there are so many great ones out there and they are so easy to buy . . . we probably all have more than can fit in our cupboards!

-Wine and spirits

If you have a person on your list that drinks either or both, then it is always nice to give them a bottle of their favorite something. Or, again, just like the lotion users and the tea drinkers, they probably have their favorites but they might be excited to try one of YOUR favorites.

None of these things are new, but if you are like me, sometimes you need reminding that there are some easy gifts to give that are pretty much always well received AND you will be helping people NOT clutter up their space.

So, do you have any people are your list that would enjoy any of these consumables?

A Friday In December

Posted by terrepruitt on December 7, 2018

Oh my! It is Christmastime already! How did that happen so fast?  Whew! Well, I was nowhere near ready for it and so I have been absorbed in decorating and getting ready for all of the beauty of it for the last couple of days (weeks?) and I have ignored so many things and people (sorry) and I am still not feeling ready and/or organized. But here is one sweet thing for my Friday Photo.
