Good Things And Not-So-Good Things

Posted by terrepruitt on February 15, 2014

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYo, Gentle YogaWell, I am not doing a weekly post to check in on your Goodie Jar, but I do hope you are still doing it or some variation there of.  Are you?  Are you taking time to recognize the good in life?  I hope so.  I am.  I believe I mentioned that I wanted to us something else to hold my notes regarding the good things.  I have a lot of beautiful bowls and plates.  I decided to use this beautiful blue bowl shaped like a flower.  I think it will be good for another month or so.  I love having this little gem on the counter.  I started off the year using Christmas wrapping paper scraps.  I have other wrapping paper scraps to use and little pieces of paper.  It all adds to the “goodness of the jar” to me.  So far the year is a good one in which to focus on the good things.  As with life there are good things and not-so-good things and that is why we have a good things jar.

I have been teaching Nia at a studio in San Jose where I rent the space.  I have been renting there since January 2009.  At first I rented an hour on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.  But after six months I decided to just rent Mondays and Wednesdays.  Well, after five years, I have decided to just rent Wednesdays.  So it has been five years of teaching on Mondays at the studio.  Monday, February 24, 2014 will be the last one for now.  Mondays are a great day to teach because on Holidays people who work are able to attend, but we don’t have enough holidays.  It could be that something else will come up for Mondays or it could be that one day I start teaching there again on Mondays, but for now, we will not be dancing on Mondays.

The classes at the community center is growing.  I love that more and more people are coming to Nia there.  Also I enjoyed my short time substituting a Nia class at the YMCA in Mountain View.  I am teaching a Gentle Yoga class on Thursday evenings.  And have been asked to teach another Gentle Yoga class on Tuesday mornings.  So while one class ends a new one begins.

We are going to have to move our after-Nia-Class-visits to Wednesday.  We have one more Monday that we are going to meet.  We have been going to Peet’s on the second to the last Monday of the month for about a year now.  So we will have to move it to the second to the last Wednesday.  I love that our little Nia community gathers after class.  I need to get this type of gathering going with the community center Nia group.

So, I am still putting things in my goodie jar.  Still looking for, finding, recognizing, seeing those good things.  I hope that no matter what is going on in your life you are able to find something good.  Something you want to make a note of so that you can read it later on.  I really enjoyed reading my good things at the end of the year.  Much of it was about Nia but not all of it.  Most of it had to do with love.  People showing ME love and that is MORE than a good thing, that is GREAT.  I hope you have a lot of moments of love that you can jot down and put in your jar.

Well . . . . how is it going?

Happy One Year Anniversary

Posted by terrepruitt on August 31, 2013

I am really happy.  This coming week marks a year that we have had Nia on Tuesday mornings at the Camden Community Center in San Jose.  Workout classes – especially group exercise classes at city community centers – can come and go.  I have been blessed with a small but very consistent group of individuals who are interested in gaining or retaining their health through movement.  I am further blessed that some of my students who attend my Monday and Wednesday Nia classes have made it over to the community center.  Nia on Tuesdays started on Tuesday, September 4, 2012.  Our year class will be Tuesday, September 3, 2013.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYoI have been teaching Nia on Mondays and Wednesdays in the Willow Glen area of San Jose since February 2009.  Most of the individuals that make up the Monday and Wednesday group have been coming for most of the four years and seven months.  They too are a dedicated group of students that I appreciate.  I rent the time at that location.

I am not sure if many classes at city community centers go on for years.  So I am very happy that we have made it to the year mark.  I think that as long as the students continue to attend we will have a class.  I am hopeful that we will expand our numbers as we enter into our second year.  This is the community center where the students requested a second class.  There was an opening so their thinking was, “Why not fill it with Nia?”  So they wrote a note asking the supervisor if they could have Nia in the time slot that has just opened.  The supervisor is allowing us to give it a go.  If, this story sound familiar it is because I wrote about it in my Goodie Jar – Check In #27 post in the beginning of the month.  I was so excited that was definitely something that went into the Good Things Jar!

The Thursday class has started out with good numbers.  Hopefully that class will grow too.  It is made up of the core group from Tuesdays, but with a few different people.  This past Thursday they were all very kind, patient, and understanding while my music and the player were not cooperating.

As with most dance exercise workouts it is really fun when there is music.  While Nia can be done without music, it is nice to have music so that each individual can dance in their own way while we do the routine.  The group was very nice and let me run to my car after three songs so I could get my boom box.

So, I am just grateful and sharing my gratitude.  I am grateful to have great Nia students at all of my classes.  And I am very grateful that the San Jose Parks and Recreation Department is allowing me to have two Nia classes.  I am jumping for joy at our one year anniversary.  I have actually been working for the city for over a year, but it took a couple of months to get a class.  Yay us!

Here’s to our Nia class being one year old at the community center.  Here’s to more to come!  Thanks for sharing in my joy!

Goodie Jar – Check In #27

Posted by terrepruitt on August 9, 2013

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba, PiYo

Hey we are INTO August!  WOW!  And we are at our Friday Check-In.  So?  How is it going?  I have a lot of Good Things to add to my Goodie Jar.

I have one thing I should put in my jar because every time I use it I am so very grateful.  I love showers.  They are one of the best privileges on earth . . . I think.  I need to put that in my goodie jar.  I think they are damn good things.  Aside from that I had some good things go in that jar this week.

One of the good things I had happen this week was something amazing by my Nia Students at the community center where I teach on Tuesdays.  I shared this on Facebook, but I will share it here too.  After class one of my students mentioned to me that the class that was being held on Thursday mornings was being cancelled so she asked if I would want to teach Nia in that time slot.  I said yes.  So she asked how to get it as a class.  I told her she needed to talk to the person in charge of the classes at that San Jose City community center.  I told her to write a note for her or send her an e-mail.  She wrote a note and had the students sign it.  I thought that was so cute.  She said she thought it would prove that the students really wanted an additional Nia class to be on Thursdays if they all signed it.

Before I got home the person in charge of the classes at the community center called me to let me know we can give it a go!  So awesome.  This is definitely a good thing for my jar!

How about you?  Do you have good things to add?  Well, here is your reminder . . . ADD THEM!

Cheers!  Have a GREAT weekend!

December 30 Minute Movement Challenge – Day #26

Posted by terrepruitt on December 26, 2012

Oddly enough, most of my Nia Students don’t even celebrate Christmas.  Most of them belong to a different religion that does not participate.  So why not get together and celebrate the end of the year, the holiday they celebrate, the holiday I celebrate, and just ourselves as a Nia Community!  Since today, Wednesday, is a day I have a Nia class regularly we are dancing, just as we did on Christmas Eve . . . . . Joy as Usual (a take off of “Business as usual).

And you?  You are here to check in for the 26th day of the December 30 Minute Movement Challenge!  Yay you!

I’ll be back with my check in!

South Bay Nia Jam

Posted by terrepruitt on August 7, 2012

Well, Palo Alto seems to be as close to as to what I consider the South Bay as we have gotten since I have been attending Nia.  I really want to have a Nia Jam in San Jose.  I am going to work on that for 2013.  The Nia Jam for San Francisco Bay Area Nia Association in the South Bay in 2012 was at a Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto.  As I have described before, a Nia Jam is a Nia class only longer with multiple teachers.  It is like a Nia class on steroids.  A typical Nia class is 60 minutes, a Nia Jam is usually 90 minutes.  In a Nia Jam there is a group of teachers who take turns teaching.  As with all Nia classes the Nia Jam had a focus and an intent.  The focus of this Nia Jam was Yin & Ying of Creative Play, with the intent of providing both a high energy experience and a quieter, more reflective experience as Nia can support either or both.  I have to be honest, I didn’t get a quiet, reflective experience out of this jam.  We were on fire!  The energy was so high it was tangible.  It was amazing!

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia I am so glad that the energy is always so high because I had taught my Saturday morning class in San Jose.  Then I stayed at the studio and took a class, then I raced over to Palo Alto to teach at the Jam.  The energy energized me!

There were six teachers who taught.  It is so fun to dance and be led by a variety of teachers.  It is a wonderful thing to be able to experience a song, a kata, that you know, in a different way.  While usually the basics are there, there is often a little nuance that the teacher adds to the song.  It could be just a sound that is not normally made, a word not usually spoken, or it could be the addition of a different step or the removal of a step, it could just be their way of cueing that makes it different.  Whatever the difference it is so invigorating to do what you know a little differently.  I also love doing the unknown.  I don’t know all of the Nia routines and I love to get to dance katas I don’t know.

At the same time a Nia Jam is perfect for someone new to Nia because they get to dance with many different teachers and experience different styles.  They also can witness the warmth of the Nia community.  New participants can also enjoy the astronomical energy that is present at Nia Jams.  They can also confirm that Nia students and Nia teachers do sweat as Nia is a moving grooving cardio dance exercise.  They can corroborate what I have been sharing — a great workout does not have to be done extremely fast and hard it can be done with movements of the whole body.

Monday in class my students were still talking about the Nia Jam.  It was THAT fun!  It was THAT energizing.  It was great!  I know Nia is a great workout.  I invite you to go to a class, one of mine (click for schedule) or one you find near you (click for worldwide listings), but I implore you to go to a Nia Jam.  If there is one not far from you, go.  You will enjoy it for all the reasons I mentioned above, for reasons I have not mentioned, and for reasons of your own.  Nia Jams are always fun and the Nia Jam for the South Bay on the Peninsula did not disappoint!
