Day Twenty-Eight Of Your Daily Ten Minute Practice

Posted by terrepruitt on February 28, 2017

Last day.  I missed two more days.  I was gone this past weekend and I just forgot.  Out of my regular routine.  Trying to deal with dad stuff.  So much stuff to deal with, I just forgot.  Well, I got my Daily 10 Minute Practice in on Monday, and I plan to do it today.  But then again, I was planning on doing it Saturday and Sunday too . . . I hope you are doing well with it.  This IS the last day!  But perhaps you will be continuing . . . I’m gonna try.

I just have to get better at being “ok” with missing a day.  But not so ok that I just start skipping a lot of days.  There is a fine line, right?

Any plans to continue?

We ALL Make Mistakes

Posted by terrepruitt on February 27, 2017

I don’t often post about current events.  I want my blogs to be timeless.  🙂  But tonight as it approached 11:00 pm and I had not yet posted anything and I was doing dinner dishes some questions popped into my head.  How long have the Oscars been going on?  Had no one, in all of those years, ever made a mistake?  Are the current procedures at the Oscars a set up for people to make mistakes?  What is up?

I don’t know about you but my mind wanders a lot while I am sudsing, washing, and rinsing dishes.  Sometimes I come up with brilliant plans only to have completely forgotten about them by the time I am done doing the dishes and have dry enough hands to make notes of such brilliance.  But tonight I was so curious.

Were the procedures so different in past years that the mistakes could not have been made?  I don’t watch the Academy Awards so I didn’t even see it, but it was such a big thing that my Facebook feed was full of it and all of the radio stations that I listen to were talking about it (or so it seemed as I pressed every button to get away from it).

Were there never mistakes before or was it that it was filmed on a delay so we didn’t see the mistakes?  Were they able to edit them out?  But now that there is Twitter and Facebook live and all types of ways for the award show go-er to post it live or record it, the Academy has to come clean?  Or is it that there IS such things as Twitter and Facebook that the Academy wants everyone to be “talking” about it that they set this type of stuff up?  I mean, again, I don’t even know what Steve Harvey announced wrong, but I know that he announced something wrong and we are STILL talking about it.

As I mentioned, I don’t even watch the show – I don’t have network TV – but I know about it because my entire feed on Facebook was commenting on it.  Then this morning all the radio stations seemed to be talking – or at least mentioning – about it.

I wonder if it had to do with the fact that their audience seems to be dwindling?  According to Time.com, there were 4 percent less people watching than last year.

I’ve heard the “explanation” that there are two envelopes and the “wrong” set was grabbed.  But who is in charge of the envelopes?  Who is in charge of the “grabbing”?  In the past 89 years how is it that the “envelope giver” or the “envelope grabber” has never made that mistake (or was it not broadcast?)?  So odd.

What do you think?  Or more importantly, do you care?

Day Twenty-Seven Of Your Daily Ten Minute Practice

Today is MONDAY.  I am filling in for another instructor so I am teaching Nia today.  Normally, I don’t have a class on Monday, but today I do!  Yay!  I’ll be doing my Daily 10 Minute Practice after class.  Probably later in the afternoon.  When will you be going yours?

Day Twenty-Five Of Your Daily Ten Minute Practice

Posted by terrepruitt on February 25, 2017

We are into the weekend.  Try to keep up with your Daily 10 Minute Practice.  Perhaps do it early so you can tackle your day.  Or perhaps doing it after you are done with your day is the way to do it.  Again, that depends on so many things, right?  A meditation might be nice to help start the day right.  Or a quick little workout.  But on the other hand a meditation might be a nice way to end the day and help with sleep.  It just depends . . . but you can still do it!

Did you get your ten minutes in?

A Fresh Scent For A Friday

Posted by terrepruitt on February 24, 2017

Isn’t this cute?  I received this from a friend and Nia student for Christmas last year.  She found the little purses and filled them with lavender.  They are really cool because the top is velcro so the lavender can be replaced when needed.  I just love it so much.  I thought it was so cute I wanted to post it.  The sequins make it sparkly and you know that I love the sparkles!

I am sharing this cuteness as my Friday Photo.  How was your Friday?

Day Twenty-Three Of Your Daily Ten Minute Practice

Posted by terrepruitt on February 23, 2017

Including today, only six day left for the Daily 10 Minute Practice.  Are you hanging in there?  Are you feeling good about it?  I know that, depending on what you are doing, ten minutes might not be enough so perhaps you took advantage of the practice and extended the time on a few occasions.  I know I did.  But then again, the next day when I thought, “Oh, I should do at least twenty minutes.”  Then it seemed more difficult to fit into my schedule.  Then I reminded myself that really, the “deal” was for ten minutes . . . then all of a sudden it seemed more do-able.  Crazy, huh?  Any of you feeling or have any of you felt that way?

Chop Cut, One Of Nia’s 52 Moves

Posted by terrepruitt on February 22, 2017

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, Nia Technique, SJ City Fit, SJCityFitWell, it looks like I haven’t posted a Nia move from the Nia 52 Moves in a long time.  When I started my blog and website I wasn’t actually planning on posting about each and every move, but with only nine left that I have not posted about, I really might as well finish the list.  It might not be done quickly, but I will get to them all.  Why not, right?  Only nine, well, eight after this one, to go!  So today I am posting about the Chop Cut.

As with most, if not all, of the 52 Moves of Nia there is a specific way to do it, but then a lot of different ways it is done.  I will go out on a limb to say this move, the chop cut, is a common move.  I am sure many, many people have done this move whether they are dancing, practicing martial arts, or not.  It is just a common move.  Or at least I think of it as a common move.

To practice it as a Nia move, one of 52, we chop the air with the edge of our hands.  The edge of the hand we refer to as the blade side.  Using one hand at a time, raise the arm from the shoulder and bring it down.  Slice, with the blade, from up to down.  Allow the elbow to be slightly bent.  All fingers are extended.  Keep the hands active and engaged even the one that is not doing the slicing.

The Nia Technique book states the benefits as:

an excellent exercise for affirming your personal power.  This move is effective for building strength in the arms and shoulders, and it is superb for releasing stress.

The move itself can release stress but when combined with sounding it can be really effective.  The book recommends saying, “because.”  I usually have my class say, “HA!”

The ideal Chop Cut is using the whole arm and the blade of the hand.  Sometimes we might use straight arms.  At times while we are dancing, we might just make the movement from our elbows.  Just letting our forearms move, chopping at the air in front of us fast.  That kind of movement can be done faster than using the entire arm.  At times the chop can just be from the wrists.  So just the hands move.  It requires loose wrists.  This move can be done really fast.  Sometimes when we chop with our hands, we move them in the space around us, so we are moving more than just our wrists.  So the chop is coming from the wrists so it is more of “just a chop” than a “chop cut”.  The Chop Cut when done according to “specs,” is a power move.  The other ones are great and sometimes they fit better into the dance.

So, am I right?  Have you done a Chop Cut before?  Were you dancing?

Day Twenty-Two Of Your Daily Ten Minute Practice

Posted by terrepruitt on February 22, 2017

Ahh, Wednesday, normally the middle of the week, but for some, this week, it is the second work day.  Either way, for many it feels like a long week.  It is always so odd how a four day work week after a three day weekend feels longer than the regular five day week.  Have any of you ever experienced that?  Well, hopefully you still have enough energy to keep up with your Daily 10 Minute Practice.

How is it going?  How is your week going?
