Mindfulness

Posted by terrepruitt on December 17, 2015

Oh.  Recently someone posted a link to a video on Facebook.  So I watched this little video about “Mindfulness”.  It was a cartoon where these animals were talking about being mindful.  The example used was one of the animals was driving in traffic and something made him angry.  Now I can’t find the video to verify, but I thought that the animal, I think it was a cow was advised to not get mad or to not act upon his anger or to just let it go.  So basically what I got from the video was that “mindfulness” was not acting out on your emotions or your “bad” emotions.  Just observe them then let them pass.  I then looked up a few definitions of mindfulness and a few of them said the same thing.  Funny . . . to me, I always thought of mindfulness as being AWARE of things.  Being in the moment and paying attention to what you are doing.

I guess the videos definition and example can be that if that means you just let the moment go and don’t focus on it and stay angry, but still I felt it was a totally different definition and idea than what I think of as mindfulness.  To me the situation he was talking about was just letting things go.  I guess some people could call letting things go mindfulness.

I really think of mindfulness as being present and being aware.  Ya know, not brushing your teeth while doing other things (my prime example because that is what I often do).  Or not walking down the street with your head bent down to see your phone.  Or not texting while driving.  Or one I know many of us do — because I see many people go back — walk away from our cars not certain if we locked it and have to go back to check.  To me mindfulness is giving your full mind, your attention to your teeth brushing, walking, driving, and getting out of the car and locking it.  To me it is focusing on what you are doing.  Kind of like what we have in Nia, called Dancing Through Life.  Paying attention to what we are doing.  Making it a dance.  Noticing our movements.

I guess, mindfulness can have different meanings.  I mean, obviously, because that video said one thing and I’ve heard it defined other ways.

What about you?  What is your definition of mindful?  Or what would you use as an example of mindful?

Sleep Helpers

Posted by terrepruitt on December 15, 2015

I’ve been thinking about writing a post like this for a long time.  But I am no expert on the matter, so I hesitate, then today I was talking to one of my students about it and I thought, “I wanna share.”  It is about sleep.  I love sleep, I am sure I have said that in a post or two.  Sleep is very important to me.  I do not function well at all without enough sleep.  And really it is also about GOOD sleep.  Uninterrupted sleep.  I was just starting to get really good sleep and then we got cats.  Some of you might know how animals interrupt your sleep.  Just this morning, I was awoken, by a small vibrating earthquake, but no, it was one of the cats scratching.  I fell back to sleep only to be awoke by another tremor . . . not the earth, a cat violently shaking her head.  UGH!  Anyway . . . many people have trouble falling asleep.  As the conversation went today with my student, she was saying she can’t stop thinking.  She has a busy mind.  Some call it the monkey mind.  What I find annoying is that sometimes even if you aren’t prone to a super busy mind, trying to go to sleep makes it happen.  I have a few things I do and a few ideas that might help with that busy bed brain.

To me, counting sheep or anything is counter productive.  This is how is goes for me:  “One, two, three, four, five . . . . twenty-one, oh, I forgot about dinner tomorrow . . . twenty-what?  Where was I?  Let’s see, I think I was at least at fifteen, but wait, I think that I have been in bed way longer than it would take to get to fifteen . . . ”  See how that would not work for me?  Once I lose track of the number I am on, then I start thinking again.  What does help me, is to just say one word over and over.  That way I won’t lose track.  I like to say, “Sleep.”  I actually just concentrate and repeat it over and over.  As other thoughts come up, I say, “Hmmm.  Sleep.  Sleep.  Sleep.”  I recognize the thought that tried to interrupt, but then I push it out with my word.

Also, sometimes there is a darkness that I can concentrate on.  It is as if I am seeing things when I close my eyes, but as I get sleepy it starts to fade and turn to darkness.  When a thought comes in, the pictures or light colors come back, but sometimes I can concentrate on that darkness and — boom, I’m a sleep.

Sometimes it is a sound.  It is like that ringing in the ears.  I can concentrate on the sound and it pulls me into sleep.

One thing to do during the day that might help when it comes time to sleep, is, not drink caffeine.  I know it is a cycle . . . don’t get enough sleep, drink coffee (caffeine), then be up because there is a stimulant in your system.  If you are one of those people that thinks they are not affected by caffeine keeping you awake, I would still suggest drinking less.  Just SEE what that does to your quality of sleep.

Also, what I was suggesting to my student who said she had a busy mind, was dance.  If you like to dance, turn on some of your favorite music and dance to it.  Turn on a song you cannot help but move to.  Then concentrate on your movements and your body.  Basically it is Nia Free Dancing.  What this does is it helps you focus.  It allows your brain to concentrate so that you can quiet some of the chatter in your head.  If you have a monkey mind, it takes PRACTICE to quiet it.  So doing this as often as you can will help.  Practicing focusing and quieting the brain while you are awake will allow you to quiet it when you want to go to sleep.

When you go to bed make sure you are comfortable.  Recently I realized that my feet were often cold.  I like the room to be cool so I can breath, but my feet were so cold it was keeping me awake.  So sometimes I put socks on when I get in bed.  Usually JUST as I am about to fall asleep, I pull them off.  Well, this is in the winter, in the summer you know I sleep with ice!

Also, use as many pillows and props as you need to be comfortable.  I have posted about how I sleep with foam rollers.  So use pillows or things to put your body in the most comfortable sleeping position possible.  Then even if your mind is still going let your body relax and become heavy.  Perhaps imagine all the tension, stress, or busy energy draining out of your body.  The times that I have been thinking too much to fall asleep, I have realized that I am tense.  Then once I let my body relax, my mind can sometimes follow.

Legs up the wall is a great pose to do before bed.  If you do that for as long as you can (but at least 10 – 15 minutes) then go DIRECTLY to bed, you might just sleep GREAT!

I’ve also gotten out of bed to write down the things I am thinking I need to do.  That helped a little bit.  I think I posted about that.

There are so many things to do that might help.  What do you do to help yourself get to sleep when you have a lot on you mind?

Busy Time Of Year

Posted by terrepruitt on December 8, 2015

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City FitIT’S CHRISTMASTIME.  I love this time of year.  Yes, I tend to get a bit crazed because I want to have my house sparkly clean, then all decorated, then have the presents all under the tree, the Christmas cards on their way in the first week of December.  And the CRAZED part comes in because unless I start doing some of this in November it just doesn’t happen.  So then I start having to take shortcuts.  I even posted about Letting Go before — I’ve actually written a few posts about letting go, but one specifically about Christmas – it turns out, in 2010, I thought it was last year.  I am nowhere near sparkly and Christmas cards are still on the radar, but I have no idea when.  One of the things that tends to get me a bit crazed it coming up with stuff to write.  I don’t always have ideas.  I want to post stuff that you will read, but sometimes, I just can’t come up with things.  I even posted about that before, too.  I skipped/missed two Saturdays because I was busy and even though I remembered in time, I didn’t remember in enough time to think of something AND write it.  So, tonight, I decided to take the pressure off by just posting what I have been doing that is taking up my time.  I don’t have time to think of stuff and research it and . . . well, life gets busy and sometimes priorities change.  I have been having a good time.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City FitOver the Thanksgiving weekend I met Rocky.  I like birds so I was trying to make friends with him.  I would visit with him everytime I walked by his cage.  The first time I heard him “meow” I ran into where he was and started recording . . . and all he would do was make that “drip” noise.  This went on for about a day and a half.  The last few hours it crossed my mind that he was not making a DRIP noise, but the noise that my iPhone makes when I turn begin to record.  What do you thing?  I am not convinced that is what it was.  (The other bird noises in the video are his “music” his dad turns on for him.)  He is a very smart and very pretty bird.

Birds are so amazing.  But they are very messy and they require a lot of attention.  They are animals that were created to fly.  When they are kept in cages they want attention.  They want attention like any pet.

So, I’ve been cleaning, putting up the tree, decorating the house, and entertaining cats.  In another post I will share some of the other decorations . . . this is it for now.

One of my girls is calling.

Don’t Forget – For December 2015

Posted by terrepruitt on December 1, 2015

The first one I always think about is the easy and yummy salad recipe.  It is usually the item I am asked to bring to dinner with my in-laws.  It is not because it is my specialty or anything, it is more because of – at least I think – that my husband’s family has food traditions and customs that, even after 20 years, I am not that familiar with.  One year I was asked to bring glazed carrots.  I had no idea what that was.  I don’t ever remember seeing them at the family dinners so I didn’t think they were in high demand.  So I brought a very small dish of them.  I am thinking I didn’t bring enough, or they weren’t good, so I was not asked to bring them again.  The Southern dinner table and the Mediterranean dinner table differ greatly when it comes to side dishes.  Anyway . . . my friend brought this Pear and Walnut Green Salad to my bridal shower and I have loved it ever since.  You might have an event you want to bring it to.

Then there is a post regarding Wrapping Tips.  I am still shredding those small scraps of wrapping paper to use in boxes and bags.  To me it is a nice way to add a different look to gifts and it is festive.  I like to have different looking gifts.  I like both gift bags and wrapped gifts – with different wrapping paper to be under the tree.  So using shredded wrapping paper in some bags and tissue paper in others really helps get that menagerie going.

Another post, Greenies Reduce Holiday Waste, has some tips about how to reduce the waste of wrapping paper entirely.  One idea I especially love is to use kids drawings as packing paper or as wrapping paper.  I think that it would be very special to receive a gift wrapped in a drawing.  And I know some kids draw A LOT and parents just don’t know what to do with the stacks and stacks of drawings.  This would be a great way to use them.  I think it would help show that the drawing even though it can’t be displayed in the house is still very special.

And – whowee!  Has it been cold for us here.  Yes, I know it is not comparable to some areas, but for us, in the San Francisco Bay Area, it has been a wee bit cold.  So I in my post, Scarves (isn’t that original?), I shared how to wear a scarf for cold weather as taught to me by an Easterner.  I really was doing it wrong up until she showed me!

There have been many versions of the book tree.  I love this idea.  I first saw it from my friend.  Here is a A Book Tree By Simon.

There there is the post that has videos or links to other people’s ideas, Wrapping, Wreathing, And Blinging Ideas.  An easy way to wrap hard-to-wrap items, an easy and inexpensive wreath, and a homemade, but very expensive looking ornament.

One of my favorite ideas is making a Christmas Tree using your Christmas cards.  I posted about it in my post CeCe’s Creative Christmas Card Display.

Well, I hope this helps you with your Holidays.  Perhaps gives you some ideas.  Or perhaps you have some ideas already and you want to share?  Yeah, go ahead, share!

Capitola Thanksgiving 2015

First we sat on a bench and enjoyed the ocean.  Then we walked.  We walked to one end and back, then to the other end and back.  Then almost back to the other end.  We did a bit of retracing of steps.

The weather was gorgeous and the crowds were non-existent.

I was taking pictures . . . . as usual . . . not being able to actually see what I was capturing.  It is just so bright out there, I can’t really see.  Twice I thought I was taking a picture and I was taking a video.  On our way home, I glanced at the pictures quickly to see if I had any I could use for a post.  I laughed because it was just so beautiful it didn’t really matter that I couldn’t really see, anywhere I pointed my camera or phone, I got a great shot.  Ok, not all of them are great, but most of them.  When I was trying to get us in the shot . . . no, but just the ocean . . . yeah.

I even got a couple with the sun reflecting nicely in the shot.

We are now waiting for the roast to be done so we can have dinner.

So here was our Thanksgiving morning.  I hope you enjoy looking at the beautiful Pacific Ocean.  We enjoyed it.  I also hope you had a great day — a Happy Thanksgiving if that is your custom or just a great Thursday.

What did you do?

So Much In A Hug

Posted by terrepruitt on November 24, 2015

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City FitA year or so ago, maybe even longer, I saw a book in the library and I asked my husband if I could borrow it.  The “library” being his shelves and shelves of books.  I’ve had it for sometime now.  I know that it was in my office for me to read, then I moved it to my nightstand thinking I would read it there.  I did not.  I moved it back to my office.  And just now, looking for something to write, I see it tucked under some envelopes.  And I open it up and the first page is about “a dance of joy and love”.  I love that.  I have picked the book up a couple of times and glanced at a few pages, but I never looked at that one, at this one, at the first one.  How perfect is that?  What a sweet thought, “we are all holding each other through a dance of joy and love.”

This book was copyrighted in 1983.  The page title “The Theory” talks about how various experiments have shown that tough can help.  Help by making us feel better, not just about out selves, but about our surroundings. And how hugs can help in children’s language development and IQ.  And that the positive effects for both the hugger and the huggee.

So people knew how great hugs were by 1983.  I understand how everyone is different in there need and desire to hear about scientific evidence or “proof” of things, but I feel that most people after having experienced a true, caring hug would freely admit that they can see how it can be a good thing.  I don’t think that science is really needed.  Just get a hug.  Or even give a hug.  And I think the proof is in the embrace.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia Technique, SJ City FitIt seems that we all feel better when we feel connected.  Not only do we FEEL better but our bodies respond to that.  Our immune systems appear to get stronger.  I know that I feel better after a hug.  A real hug.  I am not sure if I mentioned it, but when I took my Nia Blue Belt Intensive, one of the trainers would start the day by hugging each and every one of us.  She would do it before we started the training.  It was the first thing she did when she saw you.  She is a small woman but she would hug you with her whole entire being.  I always felt as if I was being embrace by a bear.  I always thought it was so odd because she was so small yet her hugs were sooooo huge.  It was one of the best parts of the intensive.  Those were REAL hugs.

I believe those kinds of hugs have the real healing power.  The heart-felt meaningful hugs.

So if you think hugs are healing and are a good thing, you might want to check out this book so you can become a “Hug Therapist”.  It is cute and fun loving.  Looking on Amazon seems that the author wrote a Hug Therapy 2 and a Love Therapy book.  Not sure what that is about.

I am a firm believer in hugs.  How about you?  Do hugs make you feel better?  Are you a hugger?

Like Seinfeld, It’s About Nothing

Posted by terrepruitt on November 7, 2015

Oh wow!  Oh man!  You might know from reading past blog posts that I am not a fan of Daylight Saving Time.  I actually wish we did NOT have Daylight Saving Time.  I also believe that the time change itself is bad for us.  I think it is bad for us in the sense that it messes with our body’s clock.  “Losing” and “gaining” an hour is just hard on the BMES.  So this time change we “GAINED” an hour, but everyone I have talked to is exhausted.  I remember this from the past couple of years, too.  I remember thinking how odd it is that we “GAIN” an hour, but everyone is so tired.  Could be because our animals/pets don’t understand that we have changed the clock so they still want to be on the schedule they have been trained to be on for the last eight months.  So they are waking us up, they are expecting to be fed, played with and walked at the same time they have been for the last eight months!  I feel that even though it is only an hour it really messes with things.  So, I have been really tired this week, how about you?

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueFriday, I had a moment where your stomach gets a sharp nauseating pain and you think your heart is going to stop and you can’t breathe.  I arrived a few minutes earlier for class than I had been for the past few weeks, but I didn’t really realize that.  As I pulled into the really crowded parking lot, I thought, “Where are all the yoga students?  They are usually leaving by now.”  But I quickly forgot about that thought because I was trying to find a parking place.  Then as I was walking to the building it occurred to me again there were no yoga students.  So I pulled out my phone to see what time it is, and I realized I was maybe three minutes early, but really the yoga student should’ve been walking out by then.  I looked up and the board announcing the day and the classes said, “Happy THURSDAY”.  I stopped.  My heart sank into my stomach.  For a second I thought, “It IS Thursday, and I totally missed my class.”  I pulled open the door as I make eye contact with one of my students, I ask, “Is today Friday????”  And she said, “Yes,” with a confused look on her face. And I said, “The board-” And her face changed as she realized, and she says, “Yeah, I saw that, too, and thought the same thing.”  I think she saw the panic in my face.  She had to have heard it in my voice.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueEarlier in the week I told a supervisor I would sub a yoga class today because I was thinking I had nothing to do so I could spare the time in the morning.  When I got home from teaching I putzed around because I though I had all night.  At 5:00 pm we got a call asking if we picked up our tickets to the Shark’s game.  We had forgotten we had a game.  Thank God, we got a call reminding us.  But that didn’t do anything to help me as I was sitting at my computer trying to decide on what to write for a blog post.  I had to stop and get ready for the game.  We had plenty of time, but that still meant I had to stop so that I could give attention to the cats, one of which was demanding it, get something ready for dinner, eat dinner, and then take a shower and get ready.

It has just been a busy kind of week.  Busy isn’t really the right word, but I tend to use that word, it is more like tiring and well, I don’t know.  It has me sitting here at 11:17 on a Saturday night writing about how my week flew by, and I forgot about the game tonight so I didn’t write my post during the day when I should have.  They lost, by the way.

You?  What did you do on Saturday night?  How are you adjusting to the time change?  Ever have weeks that aren’t really “busy”, but are full?

The Best Pet Ever

Posted by terrepruitt on November 3, 2015

The other day on my way home from teaching Nia I heard something mind-boggling on the radio.  I had to keep repeating it in my head as I drove so that I could remember it when I got home.  Of course, once I was home, I had to look it up.  Now either I heard it wrong or they said it wrong, but either way, it is mind-boggling.  Do you remember pet rocks?  Those of you that did not live through the pet rock fad might not know what that is and when I tell you, if you have never heard it before, you are not going to believe it.  What I heard was that the man who thought of it made a million dollars in two months.  Well that is not really incorrect, just differently stated than the information on Wiki.  He sold 1.5 million pet rocks in six months at $4.00 a piece.  He sold rocks and made millions.

According to Wiki, an advertising executive Gary Dahl, was in a bar in Bonny Doon, CA where he had the idea of a pet that wouldn’t need any taking care of after he heard his friends all complaining about their pets.  From about September 1975 to February 1976, the rocks were sold for $4.00.  They were in a cardboard box with “air holes” even though the pet didn’t need to breathe.  They came with an instruction manual that per Wiki was “A 32-page official training manual titled The Care and Training of Your Pet Rock was included, with instructions on how to properly raise and care for one’s new Pet Rock (notably lacking instructions for feeding, bathing, etc.).  The instruction manual was the real product: it was full of gags, puns and jokes.”

That just struck me as funny that he made millions of dollars from selling rocks AS PETS.  I mean, a lot of people sell rocks, there are rocks needed for buildings, fireplaces, walkways, decorations, and a lot of things, but a rock as a pet?  That is hilarious.  I don’t actually remember owning one, but I was at that age where I would have wanted the best pet there is to have, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I had one.  I just don’t remember.  I’ll have to check with my dad.  He might remember selling them.  At some period when I was a child, my parents owned a toy store, but I don’t know if it was at the same time as the pet rock fad.  If it was, then I am sure we carried them in the store, but that doesn’t mean I got one.

Funny things.  If that isn’t funny enough on September 03, 2012, The Pet Rock was again available for purchase.  I don’t know what they were selling for in 2012, but now they are $19.95.  Yes you can BUY your own pet rock.  It comes with a numbered certificate of authenticity.

Do you remember Pet Rocks?  Did you have one?  Do you remember any other silly fads?  Did you participate in any silly fads?

Somethings Bear Repeating Even If They Are In The Future

Posted by terrepruitt on October 31, 2015

Sometimes I write a post and I am not certain if I have written about the subject before.  Sometimes I write a post and I know I have written about the subject before, I am just revisiting it.  Sometimes things come up in life and I know I have written a post, but I am reminded that I wrote the post because it is a common issue or the post can be pointed to for information.  Recently I was reminded of a things that could bear repeating so I am pointed out a few posts.

One thing I was reminded of was holding the breath.  Have I ever told you that one of the things people ask me to do the most is remind them to breathe?  I wrote a post about breathing properly and how important it is to allow you to move correctly.  It is so common to hold your breath while concentrating there is a name for it.  Read more about it in my post Breathing – It’s A Good Thing.

Recently in one of the Nia classes I taught we focused on the “Healing Sounds”.  When I mention them there is always a few people who want the information . . . and that is why I wrote the post Feel Good Sounds.  It is too difficult to remember which sound is associated with what, this way it is right there for all of us.

It is sugar pie pumpkin time again, and so we are going to have a pumpkin for dinner tomorrow night.  So good, I wanted to point out the recipe, see my Pumpkin For Dinner post.

Perhaps you have been exposed to e-cigarettes lately.  I seem to see then around more now.  Perhaps you might be interested in reading my post Things I Didn’t Know About E-cigarettes?

And, this is for me, I always need to remind myself of the Nia Energy Allies or you might know them as the Four Agreements.  They are so helpful in so many situations.

And then something new . . . . . since it is Halloween.  My husband loves to dress up.  Sometimes he gets pretty extravagant.  This year he didn’t do too much, but he HAS been planning this “trick” for his co-worker for months.  For some reason he wasn’t able to do it when he first came up with the idea, for her birthday.  And then every time since that he has wanted to do it, something has come up . . . ya know, life does that sometimes.  So he decided to do it for Halloween.  Pretty much nothing was going to stop him.  The stars and planets all aligned to be even better than when he originally planned it.  But what he didn’t really plan – he said – was this video.  He had an idea of what he was going to say, but when his co-worker took it, it came out perfect.  So here is my husbandDoc Brown saving one of his friends.

Do you ever hold your breath?  Have you ever made any of those “healing sounds”?  Did you know some of the e-cigarettes have the same amount of nicotine as regular cigarettes?  Are you familiar with Nia’s Energy Allies/Four Agreements?  Do you get trick-or-treaters?  Do you dress up for Halloween?

Leisure Classes Vs. Group Ex

Posted by terrepruitt on October 24, 2015

Many of you are familiar with Parks and Recreation Departments and classes they run through the Community Centers.  These are classes that are in the booklets.  There are ALL types of classes.  There are music lessons, arts and crafts, exercise classes, cooking classes, language classes . . . . just all types of classes.  They are set up in what many community centers call sessions.  There might be a flower arranging class that is an eight week session, just meaning that there are eight times that class will meet.  People must register and pay for all eight meetings prior to the first day of the class.  Some of us have experienced the disappointment when we register for a class only to find out a few days before it is supposed to start, that not enough people have registered so the class is cancelled.  That is always a bummer.  In the City of San Jose Parks and Recreation Department they call these classes leisure classes.  Presently there is also something in the San Jose Parks and Recreation Department called Group Ex.  Group Ex is exercise classes.  The Group Ex is more like a gym, in the sense that you pay a membership fee and then can attend any of the classes that are in the Group Ex program – plus the gym/exercise room – for that one fee.  The Group Ex structure also allows for “drop-ins”, where people can participate in a class for a fee without having pre-registered or to be a member.  These classes are on-going so they don’t have the same type of structure as a leisure/session class.

There arewere two ways you cancould become a member, one is monthly or you cancould purchase an annual membership.  Both ways allow the member to attend any exercise class that is part of the Group Ex program.  This program really got people out of the house and exercising.  The cost of membership was unbeatable.

Most of the people who come to my Nia classes go to multiple classes per week, sometimes multiple classes per day.  I hear them plan their weeks and their days with each other.  They have it all worked out . . . their workouts.

I have been wanting to post something about the differences between Group Ex and Leisure classes for a long time.  Because I teach both.  The differences confuse some people.  Some people are familiar with the leisure class way and they don’t even know there is something like Group Ex through the city.  Some people who have never taken a leisure class (before there was even such a thing as Group Ex) are not familiar with that.  So when I go to explain the different classes I teach it can be confusing.  So I have been meaning to post something about it to help clarify.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia in the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Gentle Yoga, Group Ex classes, YMCA, Zumba, PiYo, Nia TechniqueWell, I guess the time is now.  It is now because the city of San Jose is discontinuing the Group Ex program as of January 31, 2016.  They are only going to have leisure classes.  So that means that any class they have that you might want to take will be offered in “sessions”.  So you will have to sign up for the entire session in order to take the class.

I want to let people know that just because the Parks and Recreation Department calls it a leisure class doesn’t mean it is just about “leisure”.  They still might be offering some of the same exercise classes that are presently a part of the Group Ex program that allow you to get your workout on.  It will just not be the type of format that you can just take anytime you want.  You will have to sign up in advance for the entire the entire session.

I don’t know what classes they plan on offering, but I wanted to finally get a post up about the difference between leisure classes and Group Ex so when the time comes people will know the difference.

We still have three months of Group Ex before the change occurs.  Next month on Wednesday, November 4, 2015, we are going to have a Nia class at 10:15 am at the Camden Community Center.  So there will be four Nia classes a week at the Camden Community Center until January 31, 2016.

Click here to see a copy of the notification sent out from the Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services.

I hope you will come dance with us at the Camden Community Center before the end of January!
