National Dance Week was founded in 1981 to increase awareness of dance and its contributions to our national culture. The first Bay Area Dance Week (BADW) festival grew out of a public dialogue in 1998, when dance artists, administrators, and organizations came together to explore how best to spotlight Bay Area dance during National Dance Week.

The studio I rent from rents to different instructors who teach a variety of fitness classes and dances.  Each instructor can choose to participate in Bay Area Dance Week, by offering free classes.

Bay Area Dance Week at the studio in San Jose starts Saturday, April 27th.

In regards to classes at the studio, classes not listed are not open to free drop-ins.

This is the schedule at the time of the writing.  Sometimes things change so it is always good to check with the studio and/or instructor to verify class times and participation.

Remember it is National Dance Week so there are free classes all over the United States.  I bet there is a class that you have always wanted to take, but have not yet got around to it.  So check with the instructor of that class or call the venue to see if they are offering free classes.

The San Francisco Bay Area is beginning the week with a celebration dance on Friday in Union Square Park in San Francisco at noon.  The closing event is a Planetary Dance led by Anna Halprin on Sunday, May 5th at 2:00 in Yerba Buena Gardens in San Francisco.  You can check for free classes in the Bay Area at BayAreaDance.org.  But even if it is not listed on the site check in with the person teaching it or the place it is being taught.  They might be participating but maybe didn’t get on the site.  So don’t be shy get out and dance.

What classes, in ADDITION to Nia, are you going to take?

Bay Area National Dance Week 2010

Posted by terrepruitt on April 20, 2010

Some of the reasons behind Bay Area National Dance Week is the hope that the Bay Area will celebrate all the different forms of dance; to have the Bay Area be a place where people who love dance can learn, enjoy, and participate in all types of dance; to show that the Bay Area understands that dance is a part of an area’s identity and pride; to let the Bay Area demonstrate that dance is more than just fun and exercise, it is a large part of humanity, a part that helps define us.

The dance community in the San Francisco Bay Area, being one of the country’s largest, is offering hundreds of free classes and events.

There are going to be free Argentine tango classes, jazz dance classes, hip hop classes, hula classes, fire dance classes, Samba classes, modern dance classes, aerial classes, belly dance classes, Zumba classes, ballet classes, yoga classes, Nia classes, and more!  There will also be performances and many other events.

Day Of Dance

Posted by terrepruitt on February 27, 2010

El Camino Hospital sponsored a Free Health Fair today (February 27, 2010).  It was in one of the ballrooms at the Santa Clara Convention Center.  There was various Health Screenings.  I didn’t actually get any done because I just didn’t feel like waiting in the lines.  Although there were plenty of people that were willing to stand in the lines in the interest of learning about their health.

There was various demonstrations and audience participation dances going on.  On TWO stages.  It was very interesting and very loud since they had the “main stage” and the “side stage” set up right next to each other.

I was able to do a little Zumba, which I have done before.  But I didn’t have the right shoes so it made it difficult.  I should have stayed to do the yoga that was on the stage right after us.  But I didn’t want to keep my photographer waiting that long.

A fellow Nia teacher was invited to do a demonstration of Nia so she had asked people to join her.  I am not sure how many people were there from her invitation or how many were there because they joined us, but I think it turned out to be a good crowd.  I would say there was at least 30 people.  So many so that they did not all fit on the little dance floor she was given.

It was a great thing.  I believe that a lot of people were introduced to Nia.  I am thankful to Anita for doing this for us.

My husband came along to get some pictures.  He was taking pictures of me and we confirmed that our camera is not able to take good action shots in low light.  Here are a few.  Thank you for looking.

I hope that next year El Camino Hospital sponsor another Day of Dance and you come out to see that dancing is a great way to workout out and a very fun way to get your exercise on!

You can find information regarding my classes in San Jose and San Carlos on my web site (click here).

30 Minutes Per Day

Posted by terrepruitt on May 19, 2009

At one point there was information released that stated one could be active for 30 minutes a day, five days a week and the result would be improved health.  I somehow was under a different impression, and I think my impression is better for overall health.

Dance Exercise, Nia San Jose, Nia Campbell, San Jose Nia, Campbell Nia, San Jose Dance Workout, Campbell Dance WorkoutI thought that the information had said that the 30 minutes needed to be EVERY DAY and that it was for healthy people to maintain health.  So my conclusion was that if one wanted to actually improve one’s health one needed to be doing a workout OVER and above the recommended 30 minutes of activity a day five days a week.

Maybe I was seeing into the future of recommendations.  Seems like the people that make these recommendations are now saying that more activity IS needed.

What it really boils down to is that everyone is different.  Recommendations that are published are broad, everyone has different goals.  I would think that some people could improve their health in 30 minutes a day five days a week, but there are a lot more people that need more, just to get healthy.  It is estimated that 1 in 3 adults has high blood pressure and they don’t even know it.  High blood pressure is not healthy and it possible to lower it with exercise, but it might take more than 30 minutes a day.

I recommend 30 minutes of activity every day.  The 30 minutes can be anything . . . .cleaning house, walking the dog, gardening, shopping, almost anything where you are moving your body and active.  THEN in addition to that 30 minutes every day, there should be an exercise routine.  Everyone is different.  Everyone has different goals.  Everyone has different likes and dislikes.  If you are trying to get healthy, I would suggest you examine your goals, then look at the vast amount of exercise options out there and try some.**

There is so much out there it is amazing.  There is Yoga, there is Zumba, there is Pilates, there is Nia, there is Cycling, there is Weight Training, oh, the list goes on.  Try something.  San Jose, Los Gatos, Cupertino, and San Ramon and all cities around have plenty of gyms, clubs, yoga studios, dance studios, etc., and most of them have a vararity of things to try.

Don’t think that the old recommendation of 30 minutes per day will give you the results you want, try more, get out there .. . . move!

**before starting any exercise program you should clear it with your doctor.

FREE Classes – Bay Area National Dance Week

Posted by terrepruitt on April 21, 2009

The studio at which I teach my Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and sometimes Sunday classes, participates in the Bay Area National Dance Week.  This is a week (actually 10 days) where all types of classes and performances are free.

The location of the classes range from San Francisco, to the East Bay, to the South Bay, to the Peninsula, and the North Bay.  There is Zumba and Ballroom in San Francisco, Salsa in Oakland, ballet in Berkley, Mountain View, Walnut Creek, and Los Gatos.  Pole dancing in Redwood City, Nia and Belly Dancing in San Jose . . . . Whew.  If there is a class for it,  it is part of the Bay Area National Dance Week, more classes include; Flamenco, Greek, Hip Hop, Hula, Hula Hoop, oh, far too many classes and locations to list.

Friday, April 24, 2009, at noon there is going to be a Conga line.  Per the booklet:  “Dancers and non-dancers, students and adults will join our downtown visitors, shoppers, and workers on the streets of San Francisco.”  There will be performances on the Union Square stage.

You might want to check out their site:  http://www.bayareandw.org for all the information.*

Also Friday at noon there is Dance Anywhere.  Oh, yeah, that is what they mean, where ever you are at noon on Friday, dance.  Now, I am thinking that the dance doesn’t have to be big.  You can just tap your toe and bob your head, but whatever, I think it would be cool to join in:  http://www.danceanywhere.org/

This 10 day event is from Friday, April 24, 2009, to Sunday, May 3, 2009.  Don’t miss it!

If you attend one of my Nia classes from April 27th to May 1st and mention the event you can take the class for free.

Please check www.HelpYouWell.com for class schedule changes.  Thank you.
