This past Sunday we had a Nia Jam in Palo Alto. The San Francisco Bay Area Nia Association tries to have four Jams a year. The peninsula one is in Palo Alto, but it is usually at Stanford, this time it was at a gym. It was a nice day so it was great that people came inside to support the local Nia association. As with a music jam session there are switches and changes that occur. A Nia Jam is where teachers gather and switch off leading songs so there is a mix of music and styles. The routine is created to be about 90 minutes. Normally we have a lot of teachers teaching so we only get to do one or two songs. This time the group of teachers was much smaller and we were able to do three to four songs each. The energy is always very high and exciting at a Jam because the teachers are from all over the Bay Area and beyond, so the students come from near and far. It is also a GREAT way to experience Nia for the first time because you get a taste of all the different approaches to teaching. Nia is specific in the way that we teach, yet at the same time it allows for the personality of the individual teacher to shine through. So a Nia Jam is great fun.
The theme for this Nia Jam was Summertime. The focus was moving with lightness with the intent of bringing in lightness and a sense of “summertime”, effortlessness and joy. It allowed for a lot of play, like kids playing during summer vacation. Not only were we able to bring in the lightness in our minds, our physical bodies, and our spirits, but we had the extra special treat of a skylight. The room we were dancing in has a huge skylight in the middle of the ceiling and a few glass doors to the outside so we were able to share in the beauty of the sun light and move with it. Along with the skylight and doors and windows to the outside, the room has a huge wood floor and a mirror on one wall. A small portion of the back wall is made of glass “windows” that looks into the workout room. I saw many people stop their workout to peek in at the Joy that was whooshing around the room in spirals, releves, kicks, and punches.
Nia Jams are no different than Nia Workout Classes in regards to what to wear. As you can see everyone wears what they are comfortable in. Whatever allows you to move freely and makes you feel good is perfect. But you also have to be ok with getting on the floor in your dance outfit. Like most Nia classes there is almost always Floorplay — even at a Nia Jam!
There is a wonderful sense of community at a Nia Jam. Teachers gathered to share the Joy of Nia. Participants gathered to experience a Jam. All of us gathered to do our favorite exercise. All of us ready to workout. All of us ready to dance. All of us there to do Nia. It is really fun stuff. I hope that you will be able to join us for our next Jam.
You can visit my website to see all the pictures from the Nia Jam in July. (The link MIGHT change in the future.)

So far I have done twenty-five days out of twenty-seven. Today is the twenty-eighth day. I will do my Ten Minute Workout, but I will go to bed first. It is 12:21 am and I am posting so that you can see that I am still here. And before I go to bed I plan on doing my ten minute workout — at least. So I know if I don’t get to any other exercise or workout at least I have my ten minutes workout done.
For me when I do it in the morning that I don’t have a Nia class I usually have time to do more, but I understand not everyone has the time. That is why I think setting aside ten minutes at least gives you something. I think it would be cool to do it three times a day. Remember that ten minutes probably won’t result in major gains. The ten exercises to do in ten minutes is just something to start you off or to combine with something you are already doing.
Anyway, I will check back in with my “DONE!” and also another post. Tuesday is “regular” post day. What have you got planned today in addition to doing your ten exercises to do in ten minutes? 🙂

Ok, I can make that twenty-six days out of twenty-eight days. Got up this morning and did it. Not first thing but almost. It has just taken me a while to get to the computer to comment.
So try this ten minute workout for ten days, twenty-one if you want to make it a habit.
Have Make it a GREAT day!

Friday the weekend is almost here, so close. Get in your workout, talk about it here. 🙂 I have a Nia class this morning and a million things to do this afternoon. I’ll let you know when I do my Ten Minute Workout. It’s fast and easy because it is only ten minutes. If you have time you can always make it longer by repeating any or all of the ten exercises or adding additional exercises.
It is great as a starter workout or an additional workout.
Got ten minutes?

So late! I got up this morning to do my ten minutes because I knew that I would be busy this afternoon, but when I step out of bed, my foot went, “HELLLLLLOOOOOO THERE!” So I debated. And I decided that I need to soak it in ice water for the ten minutes instead.
Then, things came up, as they often do. That is why I like to do workouts in the morning because things always come up in the afternoon. But I did it. And I think I am going to have to make some adjustments to it. I don’t want to do it faster, but add some weights or something . . . we will see.
How about you? Gotta stay in the habit.

So, it is technically Saturday. It is 1:25 am and my company just left. I am posting this Ten Minute Workout place holder for those of you in different time zones and early morning exercisers. Not that early morning exercisers would be exercising THIS early, but I am sure they will be doing it before me.
Today I don’t have a Nia class to teach so I am sure I will be getting to my Ten Ten in Ten much earlier than yesterday. So I will be checking back. And I will also be posting about Tricpes Kick Backs on the BOSU. Fun stuffs. Stay tuned.

HELLO! So here is my Ten Minute Workout placeholder post so that YOU can comment.
I have one reader/friend who is doing the Ten Ten in Ten daily and she might even get her great hubby involved in it. He works a lot but it might be that he can squeeze in ten minutes. Yay!
Another reader/friend was kind enough just to check in. She said she is not doing the 10 minute workout but she is doing her Nia. She just commented to let me know.
Well? Check in. Say hi. Tell me what you have on your schedule today.
In addition to my ten minute workout, I am going to post about the third exercise in the ten — Squats. And I will be back to let you know when I have actually done the quick workout.

I am posting this both as a comment and in the main post.
I did my ten minutes. I am getting through it twice and I think there are two reasons for that (one I have stated already, but I am going to keep sharing it). One is that because of my injured foot I am not going out very far on the lunges. You might notice that doing a shorter step is faster and easier so you can do ten quicker. I am working on being completely aware of my right foot and distributing the weight through all my toes — right now that is a huge challenge. Two is — I think — because I am better at getting on the BOSU. I can get on it faster and I know exactly where to put my feet now.
So . . . . what can you tell me?

There are a lot of 10 minute workouts. Ten minutes is really not a long time, it probably won’t get you to any lofty fitness goals, but that is where specificity comes in. If your goal is to run a marathon or bench press 200 pounds then 10 minutes of working out won’t get you there. You need to train specifically for specific goals. Ten minute workouts are good for other things. If you are really pressed for time and just need a quick fix. If you are new to exercising. If you are doing another form of working out and just want to add a little something more. If you are recovering from an injury. If you are just learning a new exercise. If you have ADD. 🙂 There are a lot of good reasons and ways to incorporate a ten minute workout into your day.
There are also different ways you can do a workout for ten minutes. Again, how you do it depends on why you are doing it. If you are pressed for time sometimes just getting through it is what you need to do. That ten minutes will just help you feel like you did something good for yourself even if the rest of the day is jammed packed with a lot of other stuff. If you are just starting an exercise program it could be that getting through ten minutes is all you can do . . . it depends on the workout. If you have a great program that you do, say cardio, like Nia, but you want to add in a little training with weights or additional stretching a 10 minute workout could be perfect. And if you are recovering from an injury it could be that 10 minutes is all that you can do safely. When learning a new exercise it could be that 10 minutes is all that your brain can take at a time. Again, it all depends on why you are doing it AND what you are doing.
Before I hurt my foot, I had come up with a little 10 minute workout I felt was a good way to get a quick workout all over. I designed it to be done with the workout tools and toys I have. I only did it a few times before I hurt my foot. Since I really was having to concentrate on teaching my classes, I pretty much stopped doing everything else. So now I am feeling that a ten minute workout would be great for me because of a few of the reasons I stated above.
The list/workout is what you see pictured here. It is nothing revolutionary it is just 10 exercises that you do 10 times each in 10 minutes. In my next regularly scheduled post (Thursday) I will explain the list. In subsequent regularly scheduled posts (Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays) I will give more detailed explanations of the exercises, modifications, and various things that come up related to this 10 minute workout. And everyday, I will post when I have done it. I will actually be doing some of the exercises in a modified fashion because of my foot. I have to modify my activity based on my teaching schedule and daily activity.
Anytime you want you to can do this list. Post in the comment that you did it too. Ask questions and I will either answer them in the comments or in a separate post. I think this is a great way for me to share some exercises with you. I hope you will join me in this 10 minute workout. Really 10 minutes isn’t that long. Ten exercises done 10 times each in 10 minutes. Ten Ten in Ten. You can do it. And you can let me know when you’ve done it. Ok? What do you say? Are you in?

I have written before about how we set a focus and intent for every Nia class. With each Nia routine there is a set focus and intent, one that was used at the recording of the training DVD, but with Nia we are invited to use different focuses and different intents. Using different focuses and intents allows for different sensations to be experienced with the Nia routines. This week I am teaching the original focus and intent with the routine. The focus is yin and yang.
I like this information I found regarding Yin and Yang, it states: “Yin yang are complementary opposites that interact within a greater whole, as part of a dynamic system. Everything has both yin and yang aspects, but either of these aspects may manifest more strongly in particular objects, and may ebb or flow over time. ”
With yin yang as a focus when we move our upper extremities in a manner akin to yin and our base in a yang manner we have complementary opposites moving the body which is the greater whole. Additional yin yang sensations are hard and soft, rough and smooth, straight and curved, up and down, stable and wobbly, loud and quiet, silly and serious . . . . .ooooooh the list goes on and on.
Yin Yang is amazing. It allows for many different movements, ideas, sensations, and feelings. We move our bodies slow, then we move hips fast as our arms float slowly in the air, then its our whole body fast. We hop reminding our legs of the sensation of agility, then we spend time with hands in a flutter so they can experience the fast start and stop of agility. We invite our neurons to stretch and grow having one hand flutter and the other one move slowly through the air. There are moments when the whole body is moving in unison in a yin way then it moves in unison in a yang way. There are points where upper body is move in either yin or yang while the body is moving in yang or yin then there is a switch. Yin yang is an exercise in coordination. Also great balance practice. As an example stand on one leg, then still standing on one leg move your arms around you in a quiet manner, then make them loud. That yin yang really trains the intrinsic muscles for greater stability.
What made me think about sharing this was today while I was doing something at home I thought, “Do in yin and yang!” So I did it fast then I did it slow, then I did it on two legs and then I did it on one leg. Whatever I was doing I realized that I could bring the focus from my Nia class this week into my everyday household chores. Yes, I know I have actually put this in a post before . . . in Nia we do “Dance Through Life“. This is dancing through life. I just love when I am dancing through life and I can share it in a post easily.
I invite you to move through your day experiencing yin and yang. So things fast then slow, move one arm fast and the other slow, move big, move little, move big and little at the same time . . . you understand. Go. Dance through life . . . be yin . . . be yang . . . be yin and yang!

I believe that I have mentioned before Nia allows us—even encourages us—to do routines with different focuses. I know I have posted about focuses before. This past week I led my classes in the Nia routine called Sanjana. I believe this is a routine created by Debbie Rosas NKA Debbie Rosas-Stewart. It is an awesome routine (well, yeah . . . its Nia). I decided that I would do one of the nine movement forms per class. I know I have posted about Nia’s Nine Movement Forms before, too. I had used some of the movement forms previously with this routine, so I decided the ones we did this week would be ones I had not paired up with Sanjana. Monday in my San Jose Nia class we did the ideas of Moshe Feldenkrais. For Wednesdays Nia class in San Jose we utilized the energy of Tae Kwon Do. My Los Gatos class on Friday experienced Sanjana with the Modern Dance flair.
I love this about Nia. I love that doing the same routine, but doing it with different energies allows for different movement, different sensations. Each movement form has its own energy, that is how we apply them to a routine and come up with something unique. I chose Feldenkrais for Monday because often times participants are a bit sleepy on Monday mornings. Sometimes we prefer something that moves us but something more along the lines of a stretch or a healing art. It could be that too much was done over the weekend or not enough, so Mondays are a little different. With this conscious movement as our guide we were able to focus on the sensation of the body as we moved. The dance was conscious. We could concentrate on areas that needed attention, either from the over-use during the weekend or lack of use. Whatever the case, the idea is ease. Move with ease into one’s own power and strength. This is a gentle movement form but that does not mean it is not intense. We can still move our bodies to get a great strength and/or cardio workout when playing with the healing arts, but it is with greater awareness.
By the middle of the week, Wednesday’s class was perfect for Martial Arts. Nia students have “recovered” from the weekend so the whole body can be used. We have the strength to utilize the power of the Tae Kwon Do energy. The dance can be precise, by this time of the week. Two days are behind, only three are left (class is in the morning), the desire and focus needed to push on is there. Sanjana has great opportunity for dynamic ease to be exercised. There are katas that allow for the fluid moves of martial arts with dance, kicking, punching, blocking, and striking. In fact the “Exercises” listed in The Nia Technique White Belt Manual* under the Tae Kwon Do craft seems as if they were written expressly for Sanjana.
Friday, unknown to me at the time I planned my dance week, was a great day to do Modern Dance. With the tsunami that hit Japan over the night (Thursday night for us, Japan’s Friday) it was a great time for dance. Modern Dance calls you to express yourself. This movement form is one of imagination. You can be big and/or small, fast and/or slow, a tree, a rock, sand, water, air, even a feeling. People can truly dance whatever they want. So while we are still practicing our stances the feelings put into it are those of the participant. Movements led by me are executed by whatever sense is being experienced. Many people had different issues and feelings to work through. Even if some of those feelings were a celebration with the understanding that life is short and precious so we need to celebrate what we have while we have it. This form is that of balance–both on and off, flexibility, strength, power, drama, emotions . . . whatever fits. It was a great way to let our bodies move while our hearts went out to all that were affected.
Nia is awesome like that. We danced the same routine for all three classes this week. With each class it was different while we paired up the routine with different movement forms. While the movement forms were able supply the energy, the “feel”, the sensation that was required for the day.
(Thoughts and prayers go out to ALL that are/were/and will be affected by the earthquake in Japan on March 12, 2011 and the subsequent tsunami.)

Do you collect anything? My husband collects shot glasses. He has them from all over. ALL over . . . . . . even space. This one is probably from the furthest away. This is a shot glass from Ferenginar 🙂 . Ferengi is from the Star Trek Empire.
You might be able to see it is made up of two pieces. The metal piece made up of rings that hold the glass “shot glass” portion. It is a fun design. I guess it is perfect for off world shot taking. I don’t know if he has ever drank out of it. Now that I think about it is quite funny. He collects shot glasses, but he doesn’t really drink shots. He does like to buy a shot glasses from places we have been. So it is the collecting of the item that brings him pleasure. It is a bonus if the shot glass is cool or unusual.
Because I started this blog to promote Nia, my Nia classes, and grow in my Nia practice by writing and posting about it, I always have Nia in the back of my mind when I am writing a post. Even if it has nothing to do with Nia, like this one. It is about collecting, it is to share picture of this particular shot glass. But as I was typing the part about my husband collecting shot glass because it makes him happy, it brings him pleasure I thought of a comparison to Nia.
The similarity is that he doesn’t really like to drink shots, a person could not really like to workout or exercise. My hubby likes to buy shot glasses, it brings him pleasure, Nia is a dance, if you like to dance it brings pleasure. If the shot glass is cool or unusual it is better, Nia is cool, it is unusual, it is different. The fact that John doesn’t really drink shots doesn’t mean that it is not nice to have shot glasses around in case he wants one so he gets the benefits of owning them. Nia doesn’t really FEEL like exercise because the participants are involved in a movement that bring pleasure, but since we are moving in all different ways, up down, around, fast, slow, and engaging so many body parts and muscles it IS a workout. You DO receive benefits as you do when you do traditional exercise.
Funny how things can be connected. Funny how things can be collected. Do you collect anything? What?

Nia has a list of 52 moves. A lot of Nia’s moves are moves that are from different forms of dance. I knew a lot of them already because of the different dance I have been involved in. One thing I’ve done before is just rolling around the foot, in Nia we call it Rock Around the Clock. Normally we actually STEP to or on positions as if we are dancing on clock on the ground, but for this move it is rolling on our feet, as if on positions of a clock.
With your knees relaxed and your upper body loose, rock back onto your heels. If going “counter-clockwise” you would rock to the right edge of both your feet–at the same time. Then move to the balls of your feet, rising on your toes. Then rock and roll 🙂 to the left edge of your feet. Both at the same time. The feet roll to 6 o’clock, 3 o’clock, 12 o’clock, then 9 o’clock. Rock around the clock. Don’t forget to rock clock-wise.
This move helps build strength in the ankles and the lower leg. A strong base is a stable base. With this move the muscles in the feet can also be exercised. Since often our feet are encased in shoes that don’t allow them to achieve the movement they are designed for, this move can help with strengthening our feet AND improving flexibility.
Nia’s Rock Around the Clock is a prime example of one of the exercises we do in a Nia class that is easy to do and results in huge benefits. If at first you find this move a challenge to your balance that’s ok, practice it holding onto a table, a chair, a counter then before you know it you will be able to rock around the clock without any help.
Update-ish: On January 15, 2015 I posted about another way to practice this move. Click here to go to Ways To Practice Rock Around The Clock.
