Nia Routine Training Packages

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaI have written a series of three posts describing what is contained in a Nia Routine Training Package.  I was reminded by a comment on one of recent posts about Nia Routines (Nia Routines I’ve Learned) that in 2010 I stated I would explain more about what we receive on a teacher routine DVD.  Because the package put together by Nia Technique is so packed with information and learning material, my explanation took up three posts to summarize all that you receive in a Nia Routine Training Packages for Teachers.  This post is just a quick summary and “map” so to speak of the three posts.  I hope all of this information helps you understand that “with love, we [Nia Technique] have carefully crafted this ‘body of work'[meaning each routine] to offer you an in-depth body, mind, emotions, spirit experience.”**  They do that so that we may pass on music, movement, and magic to our students.

When I RECENTLY mentioned I would write up a description I didn’t realize it would take so long and so many posts.  But back in 2010, I must have known on some level that it would be more than one post because it has taken me three years to do it!

Nia’s Routine Training Packages for Teachers consists of a Music CD, a DVD, and a pamphlet.

The first post – Nia Technique’s Outstanding Routine DVDs – explains the CD, the components of the DVD, and two of the components on the DVD, the Focus and Move the Move

The second post – DVDs Nia Teachers Learn From, Nia Technique’s Outstanding Routine DVDs (Part 2) – explains the last three components on the DVD.  DVD Components: Learn the Move, Energize the Move, and the music.

The third post – Nia’s Routine Pamphlets, Nia Technique’s Outstanding Routine DVDs (Part 3) –  explains the pamphlet.

Each post while a full post in itself still only briefly describes things.  I could write so much more and do many more posts, but I think I summarized it well enough to give you an idea of the training.  I hope that those of you that are interested in teaching have a good idea of what type of training you get when learning a routine.  If you are fortunate enough to live near Nia Headquarters in Portland, OR then you know that they often have workshops and things to even further your education regarding routines.  Sometime in my basic area they have immersions where two days are spent learning a routine.  We all learn differently and I am convinced that no matter how you learn, with all the different ways available to learn a routine there has to be something that will do it for you.

DVDs Nia Teachers Learn From

Nia Technique’s Outstanding Routine DVDs (Part 2)

Three years ago I posted about Nia Routines and I stated in that post that I would describe what the training DVD is like.  Here I am with that information.  Also, I want to share about the whole routine teacher training package that a Nia teacher receives.  It is turning out to be three (sort of four) posts long.  This is the second post.  That is how much we get in our Nia continued education Routine Teacher Training package.  I am just sharing briefly about it.  These posts are to give you an idea of what you would receive.  As a reminder you receive a CD, DVD, and pamphlet.  The CD and DVD are shipped to you and the pamphlet you can view online, save to your computer, and/or print.

The DVD consists of the Focus, Move the Move, Learn the Move, Energize the Move, and the Music.  In post one I talked about the Focus and the Move the Move section.  Here you’ll learn a bit about Learn the Move, Energize the Move, and the music.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaIn the Learn the Move section they explain the move.  The way they did this morphed over the years.  I have some DVDs where they stood facing the camera and talked about the moves.  Showing you the move and going into detail about each move.  I also have some DVDs where the teacher is just dubbed over the actual class as shown in the Move the Move portion.  So you are seeing the same thing over again and the creator is talking about the moves as the routine plays.  The explanation includes both the physical description and little tips.  Sometimes they might explain alternatives even if they have not done them in the Move the Move portion of the DVD.  They also sometimes explain why we are doing a move.  “‘Holding a ball’ allows a body to move systemically, connecting the upper body with the lower body.” This portion at times can help with figuring out how to do a move if it is a little challenging to you or your students.

With Energize the Move the creator explains the energy involved.  For example “the energy at this part of the routine is meant to be focused and very intentional.”  And, “the energy of connecting to your body and space around.”  This section can help provide pearls and additional verbiage that you can use to get your class moving.

The last section of the DVD is the Move the Move with just the music.  There is no teacher instruction.  This is where you do the Nia Class without being told what to do.  You get to watch and just listen to the music.

The music portion of the DVD always makes me remember I have always wanted an option in the Move the Move portion to be able to turn up the music.  I have an exercise DVD (Turbo Jam) where you can “pump up” the music.  You can still here Chalene Johnson giving you instructions but you can make the music much louder.  I think it would be of great help to me if I could turn the music up on my Nia Routine DVDs but still listen to the teacher talking.  I have yet to suggest that to Nia HQ.  It would really be nice for me to hear the music louder so I could practice my listening to the cues, yet still get the benefit of the instruction.  I’ve tried to time the music say from my iPod to the DVD so I COULD turn up the music myself, but I can never get it synchronized.  🙂

In my post Continuing Education – Nia White Belt Principle #12, I talk about the three stages of learning a routine.  I mention there are steps in each stage.  The Learn the Move and Energize the Move are couple of the additional steps.  Watching and learning the information contained in each of these sections of the DVD can be very beneficial to leading a routine.

Nia Technique’s Outstanding Routine DVDs

In my post about Nia Routines in February of 2010, I stated I would explain more about what we receive on a Nia Routine Teacher DVD.  A comment with questions on a recent post (Nia Routines I’ve Learned), reminded me that I needed to do that.  Over three years later, I am explaining what we get. I also wanted to share what is in the Nia Training/Continued Education package as a whole.  We get a LOT.  It is more than just music and routine.  The amount of time and effort and all that goes into our training DVD/package is awesome.  I know that even though I see the results and I think it is a lot, there is probably so much more that goes on in the background I would be even more impressed.  Since we get so much I am finding as I type this that it is a longer explanation than I like to have in one post.  So this will be part one of what is in a Nia Routine Teacher Training package.  When a Nia Teacher receives a “Nia Routine” there is a CD and a DVD.  We used to receive a pamphlet within the package, but now we have to print those out ourselves if we want a hard copy.  But basically a training routine package is CD, DVD, and pamphlet.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, ZumbaThe CD and DVD are in a cardboard holder, one side has the list of songs with the 8BC and the time shown.  The other side has the Focus and Intent that the routine was created with.  The back of the holder states the name of the routine and the creator, along with a paragraph about Nia Technique’s thoughts on routines.

The CD is a typical music CD.  It has music on it.  But as a Nia Teacher or student you know there is nothing really typical about Nia routine music.  🙂  The songs play one after the other with no pause unless the song itself has a pause before the music begins or after the song ends.  Or I guess the engineer putting the CD together could put a pause in.

The DVD consists of five sections: the Focus, Move the Move, Learn the Move, Energize the Move, and the Music.  The “Focus” portion of the DVD is the creator (or one of them) talking about the focus and the intent of the routine.  Often times they explain a bit about how the focus relates to the choreography.  For example if the focus is “Steps and Stances” it might be mentioned that there are a lot of opportunities in the routine to experience all six stances.

Dance Exercise, Nia, Nia at the City of San Jose, Nia classes in the South Bay, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia, Zumba“Move the Move” is the routine filmed almost as if you were taking a class.  Sometimes they change the camera angle, but it is still basically as if you are taking a class.*  The music is playing and the teacher is teaching.  *There is one routine I have in which it was filmed with the class FACING the camera the entire time.  I do not care for that at all.  I like it when the camera is BEHIND the teacher with the mirror in the shot and it is as if I am standing behind the teacher taking a Nia class.  I don’t know if there are other routines in addition to Birth that is filmed with the teachers and the class facing the camera, but I will inquire before I purchase additional routines.

Often times in addition to the teacher demonstrating different LEVELS of a move, they will demonstrate a lot of different moves that CAN be done while doing the routine.  I always have to remind myself that just because they are showing us multiple ways to do the move or multiple ways in general to move to the music it does not mean I need to put them all into the routine when I am leading it.  They are just showing examples as to what can be done.  I find it very funny that a lot of the times Carlos was not even doing what he explained the choreography to be.  To me, he often just let his spirit go and he danced to the music that he clearly loved.  In his spirit dance he was able to show a lot of different things that could be done to the music.

As you can see this post is a bit long in itself.  I have only touched upon two of the sections included on the training DVD.  So stayed tuned for part two where I give a brief summary of the sections: Learn the Move, Energize the Move, and the Music.

Do Me A Favor, No, Do YOU A Favor

I have a huge favor or request.  I know I have mentioned it before, but I don’t think I have done a single post on it, but recently I, myself, was confronted with this situation so I really want to make a serious plea.  I am going to go out on a limb and say this is a plea for many fitness instructors/dance exercise teachers.  If you go to a class and you don’t like it, please, please, please try it at least two more times.  If you are ok with the instructor, but the class is just not that good in your opinion, give it another chance.  There are a million reasons why you might not like that particular class on that particular day.  It could be the routine or exercises you were doing that day so ask the instructor when s/he will be changing to a new one.  Or it could be the music, so, again talk to the instructor.  Maybe ask if the class you just experienced was the norm or the typical class.  Sometimes instructors decide to change it up and try something new but after taking it to the class they might decide they didn’t like it either.  So ask.  Also ask the other students.  Don’t give up on something after just one class.

If taking three classes from the same instructor sounds like a waste of time and money to you, try a different instructor.  We are all different and we strive to represent the brand/technique/practice to the best of our ability, but we also add out own style and it could be that the style is not something that you connect with.  It could also be — if you don’t like the class — that the instructor is not necessarily sticking to the program.  You might enjoy the class with an instructor that is more closely following the idea of the fitness brand/technique/practice.

I had been to a few fitness classes recently and I felt some elements that I believe should be included in this type of class were missing. Plus in a couple of classes I felt as if it was not all that the brand promised.  But I attended a few more classes with different instructors and I began to see a big difference.  I also took it upon myself to become educated a bit in the type of class and now I understand why I like one class over the other.  One instructor was following the program more closely than the other one and it actually is more enjoyable.  I actually went to four or five classes with three different instructors.  I walked out of one class saying, “Dang, I really hate that.”  Whereas the other two I thought, “Now that is what it is all about!”

So if you walk out of a class thinking you really don’t like it, that is ok, you obviously didn’t like THAT particular class, but it could be the brand/technique/practice wasn’t represented correctly.  So try again.  Maybe the instructor was having a bad day.  Yes, it is our job to instruct and hold a good class, no matter what, but . . . c’mon we are only human.  Sometimes we just have “off days”.  There are all types of reasons to give an instructor another chance.

I know I have mentioned this before, but if I HAVE done an entire post on it before and I am repeating myself I apologize, but I really feel strongly about this.  Because, as I said, twice I walked out of a class saying, “No way!”, but then the two other instructors showed me a “Yes way!”

Now keep in mind that I am not just talking about Nia, I am talking about ANY class you try; Zumba, Jazzercise, Barre Fitness, Turbo Kick, whatever.

If you end up giving it a good try and still end up not liking it at least you will have burned some calories in the process.  But I bet if you were drawn to the class in the first place you will end up finding a class and an instructor that you like.  Just don’t give up after the first class, do yourself a favor and keep at it and you’ll end up finding something to allow you to gain all the benefit of an exercise workout.

Squish Walk – One Of Nia’s 52 Moves

Nia is the same as many things, the more you do it the more accustomed your body becomes to the movement.  When you first try swinging a bat or a golf club it seems as if there are so many things to think about.  The placement of your feet, the bend in your knees, the sinking of the hips, what your hands are doing, what your elbows are doing, where your chest is facing, to move or not to move your shoulders.  Then there is your head, your eyes, and – oh yeah – the ball.  So much to remember.  Then as you practice you forget that you even were onceDance Exercies, Nia, Nia Campbell, Campbell Nia, Nia classes in Campbell, evening Nia, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia having to remember all that.  You are able to just “let go” a bit and play the game.  Dance exercise is the same way for some.  There are moves in Nia that we do, the 52 moves.  At first the body might be so busy trying to do it correctly it is not allowed to play, but once the moves are learned there is time to play.  In a Nia routine a move is often repeated enough so it can be learned and then the play can begin.  But there is still a technique, there is still a right way to do it in order to get the benefits from it as was the intention of having the move be a part of Nia.

One of the moves that I sometimes find challenging is the Squish Walk, the way Carlos AyaRosas (FKA Carlos Rosas), told us how to do it.  I had thought it was rising on the ball of one foot, then squishing that foot down, then rising on the other ball of the foot, and alternating.  The imagery is that of squishing oranges under the heels.  I had thought it was one whole foot on the ground before bringing up the other, but that is not how he instructed us.

His instructions were to be on the both balls (of the feet) at the same time.  Not all the way up on both feet but one heel HIGH and one lowering and switching like that.  The foot that is flat on the ground (whole foot) is not there long because it comes right back up.  I found this method much more challenging than the one foot down and the other foot up.  The method Carlos had us do tends to work the calves and shins more than the other method.

The Nia Technique Book states one foot is down (whole foot on the ground) before bringing the other foot up.  Both methods work the lower legs, improving strength and flexibility.  Neither method is actually a walk.  We are not progressing forward.  Although the squishy movement could be incorporated into a walk.

Dance Exercies, Nia, Nia Campbell, Campbell Nia, Nia classes in Campbell, evening Nia, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, NiaWith the method in the book, I usually use the image of high heeled shoes.   Lift one heel as if you are showing off a new high heeled shoe.  The concentration is on the lifted heel.   Then switch heels.  With the method Carlos taught I think more of oranges.  The concentration, to me, is more on the squish.

In the Nia routine we have been doing this past month in my Nia Classes we do something they’ve dubbed the “double squish walk” which is rising at the same time on both balls of the feet.  Then the squish is on bringing both heels down at the same time.  Double Squish.  I just call it up on the balls of your feet, since it doesn’t seem very squishy and it is not like either method.

I invite you to try both methods of the squish walk.  Lift one foot onto the ball of the foot, then set it down and lift the other foot.  Alternate.  And try, lifting up on both balls of the feet, then start to lower one to ground, then alternate.  It is as if in one method both feet end up on the ground and with the other method both feet end up on the balls of the feet.  So fun, the different ways to do the moves yet, both ways are to help condition the lower legs to help “you move safely with different speeds and intensities”.  In other words be sturdy on your feet as you move and dance through life!

Free Nia During Bay Area Dance Week

Every year there is a Bay Area Dance Week. This year is the 14th annual dance week and it is being presented by Dancers’ Group. This will be the fourth year that I have offered my morning Nia Classes to New Students for free. I did it last year, but I didn’t post about it. I figured I should post about it to remind people it is happening. My 9:00 am Nia Classes on Monday, April 23rd and Wednesday, April 25th at Halanda Studio will be free to New Students. Here is another opportunity to try Nia for free.

In addition to Nia there are many FREE Classes during National Dance Week at Halanda Studio. Halanda Studio is owned by two women who rent out the studio by the hour. The variety of classes that are offered at the studio is very diverse. As you can see by the schedule of free classes there is several types of Belly Dancing from beginning to Intermediate/Advanced. Also being offered for free during Bay Area Dance Week is Hot Hula, Yoga, Zumba, Bollywood Fitness, and I’ve already mentioned Nia.

While I want you to attend classes at Halanda and in particular MY Nia class, my dancing spirit has to bring to your attention to the fact that from April 20 – April 29, 2012 it is Bay Area Dance Week. So there are FREE classes ALL OVER THE BAY AREA!!! According to the Bay Ara Dance booklet there are more than 650 groups, artists, and organizations participating. There are over 100 forms of dance to enjoy. Not only are there free classes but there are free performances.

The opening event is Friday, April 20th at Union Square Park in San Francisco. The closing event on Sunday, April 29 will be at 2 pm in Union Square Park in San Francisco where there will be simple circle dance for peace among people and peace with Earth. Looks like this dance will be led by the amazing Anna Halprin. She is 92 years old and still dancing and teaching dance . . . now that is what I call amazing!

Four-wall or Cooking – An Experience In All Sides

In Nia we do something that is called cooking all four sides.  When I first learned this I thought it to be just when we were on the ground.  “Cooking” to me was the “side” of the body that was on the ground.  When you “cook” all four sides you allow your belly, your back, your left side, and your side to “cook” on the ground.  So basically you are lying on a different “side” at one point in the dance.  In one routine, I can’t remember which one, while we are standing we turn and face one wall, then turn again, then turn again, then turn again and Debbie called it cooking all four sides.  I thought, “Wow!  I hadn’t thought to call THAT cooking all four sides, because (as I mentioned) I think of ‘cooking’ as being on the floor.”  But it works.  We are “cooking” or facing all sides, all walls.  In country line dancing we call it a four-wall dance.  Often times there are a few steps then a turn, a few steps, then a turn, and so on, eventually you face all four walls.  There are two wall dances and maybe even three, but the point is you face a different direction.  Generally the back becomes the front and the front becomes the back.

ance Exercies, Nia, Nia Campbell, Campbell Nia, Nia classes in Campbell, evening Nia, Nia Teacher, Nia Class, San Jose Nia, Nia San Jose, Nia workout, Nia,I’ve posted about Nia Routines before.  I explained a bit about how the routines are created and teachers can purchase them.  Nia routines used to be choreographed and performed on the training DVD by Debbie Rosas or Carlos Rosas or both.  I’ve also posted about the fact that Nia morphs and changes.  At the end of 2010 Carlos AyaRosas, the male co-creator of Nia retired.  As with any company that wants to continue on after a founder retires Nia had to make some changes.  To me it seems as if Nia had been thinking about this for a while.  I know when I attended my Nia White Belt Intensive both Debbie and Carlos talked about Nia continuing on after they leave.  So it seems to me that they had plans and ideas for how Nia will change.  I think it is evident in the way that Nia does not seem to be a flag flapping in the wind, it has true direction.  With the exit of Carlos a new era has been born.  Debbie is now co-creating routines with Nia Black Belt Trainers.  I love Nia and enjoy both the routines Debbie created and the ones Carlos created.  There are some I like more than others.  I am not saying that I like the new one I have seen more than I liked the “old” ones, I am just saying, “Yay!  Nia is not disappointing me.”  The new routine I have looked at is just as fabulous as the old routines I love. 

As a little background:  In order to teach Nia we must pay a licensing fee.  When we pay the fee we are purchasing the right to teach, continued education, and four Nia routines.  We are free to purchase additional routines when they are available, but four are included in the licensing fee and we are obligated to learn at least four a year.  I just recently renewed my license and ordered my routines.  I ordered two that are older (from 2007 and 2008) and two that are considered our new ones, dated 2011.  Usually I skim through all four before deciding which one to learn next.  One of them I ordered I have done once before in a class so I know that I like it and I was planning on learning that next, but my curiosity about one of the new ones got to me.  I decided to learn it next after having watched it.

I am very excited about this routine because it has the “four-wall” or cooking all four sides technique in it.  The routine I am currently teaching has it too but only briefly, this new routine has this technique in more than one song.  Since a Nia class is not a dance lesson we just lead follow like other cardio workout classes the cooking all four sides is to not a series of complicated steps, but it does allow us to face other directions.  In FreeDance there is always opportunities to face many directions and sometimes in the Nia movements alone one can be turning far enough to achieve facing another wall, but this is choreographed to have the entire class turn.  It allows the class to see a different perspective.  I think it is fabulous.
 
It could be making me nostalgic and thinking of country dancing days . . . but more so, I am excited to have this technique used in a Nia routine so my students can see things from the front if they are always in the back or the back, if they are always in the front.  It will help move the class in new directions and Beyond!

Have you ever thought about the fact that a cardio dance class is pretty much like a line dance?

31 Things in December Project

Whew!  Of course the first two days into December were busy or to state it more accurately – already scheduled.  So my 31 Things in December Project almost didn’t get started until the 3rd of December, but as I was going along I realized that I could count what I was already doing as part of the project.  I was originally thinking of things to do specifically for the project so I hadn’t made the connection that what I was doing could be included in the project, which is just plain silly.  As you may know from my posts one of my best friends is moving away.  Yes, I can still talk to her and keep in touch, but visiting will be a much larger ordeal and will not happen as often as we would like.  So this past week I spent two days visiting her just to see her two more times before she left.  The last visit was on December 1st, the first day of my project.  I hadn’t thought of something to do for the project.  But I did get a new rug which is to replace TWO rugs in my entry way.  So without even thinking about my project I was able to get rid of two things, but since I replaced it with one, some sticklers might consider the “getting rid of count” at one.  But that is ok, it is still ONE thing.  And it is much easier to vacuum, clean, wash, etc. ONE rug instead of two.  And that is the point of this project.  If making more space, if getting rid of things, if de-cluttering, if fixing something helps make life easier and less time is consumed then that is what we want.

Then on December 2nd, I had a Nia class to teach late morning and then my mother-in-laws memorial service to go to, so again I was not thinking of my project.  But I was thinking of making sure the house was not a disaster when some people came to visit afterwards, so I employed my refrigerator cleaning technique.  With my technique I don’t empty out the fridge so I don’t always throw stuff out.  But this time I decided to throw a few things out.  Afterwards I realized that my getting rid of stuff in the fridge could be considered “things” for my project.  So, yay, since I had other things on my mind it worked out great.

Nia teacher, Nia San Jose, Dance exercise, cardio exercies, Nia classes, San Jose dance exerciseThen today – I made sure I did it BEFORE I posted so I could be honest – I did one of the things I was originally thinking about doing for this project.  Now this is going to probably sound really silly to a lot of people, especially men, but I’m going to share anyway.  First I am going to try to set it up so it might not sound as silly.  If someone is going to do a project, let’s say, build something, they might need a variety of tools in order to do it correctly.  A cook or a chef usually has many tools at his/her disposal in order to cook a nice meal.  A hairdresser has many tools in order to style, cut, color, and work on people’s hair.  Well, for some the same thing goes with make-up.  I don’t think I wear a lot of make-up but I do realize that there are some tools that help with the make-up applying process.  One tool some of you that wear make-up might use is an eyelash or eyebrow brush.  Well, I don’t think that there is any sense in buying them.  What I do is I use the brushes in that come with the mascara I buy.  I like certain shaped brushes when I apply mascara so sometimes I will buy my mascara based on the brush.  Well, since I use the brushes in my make-up applying process sometimes I don’t throw the tube of mascara away even when I have stopped using it.

Nia dance exercise, dance exercise, San Jose Dance exercise, execise dance in San JoseMascara does not last a long time.  I think they have even perfect formulas so that is gets clumpy and sticking after about 45 days so you are forced to go out and buy more.  Anyway . . . with the fact that there is a point that I stop using it and I use the brushes after I am done with the mascara, I have ended up with a lot of unused tubes of mascara in my drawer.  Now, my intent as I save every tube is to “deal with it”, but it is a messy process.  It is not that it takes a long time, but when I am doing my make-up I am usually trying to get out of the house so I don’t want to take time to stop and look at all the tubes I have, decide which brushes I might want, then wash them out.  I am too busy trying to get ready.  Then when I am home I don’t think, “Oh my mascara brushes!”  So you might be able to imagine how they can pile up.  So that is one of the things I have taken care of as part of my 31 Things in December Project.

I went through all of the tubes of mascara I had.  I decided which brushes seemed as if they would make good tools, then I pulled them out of the tubes, THREW THE TUBES AWAY (YAY!), and washed the brushes.  I ended up with a few brushes, but they are all different shapes and different bristle hardness, so I think they will be able to be used differently.  I am going to evaluate them when they are dry to make a final decision.  If the bristles are to soft after they dry then they really aren’t what I want.  So I might end up throwing away even more.

But now I have a little more space in my make-up drawer.  I know the whole make-up thing might seem silly to some, but as I stated the whole idea of this project is to help eliminate things to help free up space and/or time.  With less things in my drawer there is more space which creates more time because I am not having to paw through useless tubes of mascara.  Plus with this particular thing I have created tools that will help me apply my make-up more efficiently.  Not that I actually do that often anymore because I dance it off when teaching Nia, but when I do it is nice to have help.

Three of Nia’s Nine Movement Forms

I believe that I have mentioned before Nia allows us—even encourages us—to do routines with different focuses. I know I have posted about focuses before. This past week I led my classes in the Nia routine called Sanjana. I believe this is a routine created by Debbie Rosas NKA Debbie Rosas-Stewart. It is an awesome routine (well, yeah . . . its Nia). I decided that I would do one of the nine movement forms per class. I know I have posted about Nia’s Nine Movement Forms before, too.  I had used some of the movement forms previously with this routine, so I decided the ones we did this week would be ones I had not paired up with Sanjana. Monday in my San Jose Nia class we did the ideas of Moshe Feldenkrais. For Wednesdays Nia class in San Jose we utilized the energy of Tae Kwon Do. My Los Gatos class on Friday experienced Sanjana with the Modern Dance flair.

I love this about Nia. I love that doing the same routine, but doing it with different energies allows for different movement, different sensations. Each movement form has its own energy, that is how we apply them to a routine and come up with something unique. I chose Feldenkrais for Monday because often times participants are a bit sleepy on Monday mornings.  Sometimes we prefer something that moves us but something more along the lines of a stretch or a healing art.  It could be that too much was done over the weekend or not enough, so Mondays are a little different.  With this conscious movement as our guide we were able to focus on the sensation of the body as we moved. The dance was conscious.  We could concentrate on areas that needed attention, either from the over-use during the weekend or lack of use.  Whatever the case, the idea is ease.  Move with ease into one’s own power and strength.  This is a gentle movement form but that does not mean it is not intense.  We can still move our bodies to get a great strength and/or cardio workout when playing with the healing arts, but it is with greater awareness.

By the middle of the week, Wednesday’s class was perfect for Martial Arts.  Nia students have “recovered” from the weekend so the whole body can be used.  We have the strength to utilize the power of the Tae Kwon Do energy.  The dance can be precise, by this time of the week.  Two days are behind, only three are left (class is in the morning), the desire and focus needed to push on is there.  Sanjana has great opportunity for dynamic ease to be exercised.  There are katas that allow for the fluid moves of martial arts with dance, kicking, punching, blocking, and striking.  In fact the “Exercises” listed in The Nia Technique White Belt Manual* under the Tae Kwon Do craft seems as if they were written expressly for Sanjana.

Friday, unknown to me at the time I planned my dance week, was a great day to do Modern Dance.  With the tsunami that hit Japan over the night (Thursday night for us, Japan’s Friday) it was a great time for dance. Modern Dance calls you to express yourself.  This movement form is one of imagination.  You can be big and/or small, fast and/or slow, a tree, a rock, sand, water, air, even a feeling.  People can truly dance whatever they want.  So while we are still practicing our stances the feelings put into it are those of the participant.  Movements led by me are executed by whatever sense is being experienced.  Many people had different issues and feelings to work through.  Even if some of those feelings were a celebration with the understanding that life is short and precious so we need to celebrate what we have while we have it.  This form is that of balance–both on and off, flexibility, strength, power, drama, emotions . . . whatever fits.  It was a great way to let our bodies move while our hearts went out to all that were affected.

Nia is awesome like that.  We danced the same routine for all three classes this week.  With each class it was different while we paired up the routine with different movement forms.  While the movement forms were able supply the energy, the “feel”, the sensation that was required for the day.

Moving With the Changes

In my last post about the Nia workout I referenced an index I created for the Nia Technique Book.  I want to point out that some of the section titles you see might be different than some of the information you hear now coming from Nia.  The Nia Technique Book was published in 2004.  The creators of Nia – Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas wrote the book to explain how Nia came about and to share its principles and moves.  As you read the book you will see how Nia was not just thought up over night — actually it wasn’t thought up at all — it was born and it was grown and continues to grow and change.  That is my point here, the names you might see of sections or principles in the index and in the book, might be different now because Nia is always moving, changing, and growing.

The basics remain the same.  The core principles themselves have not changed but, they might have morphed a bit.  In my post about Principle #11, I have said some of this before.  I try not to repeat myself in entirety but often times it is ok to repeat some things.  I like to repeat that Nia has been around for 26 years, the main ideas of moving to increase health, moving as the body was designed, and many more are still the same, but at the same time Nia has changed.

As I was typing up the index for the Nia Technique Book I noticed that, aside from Principle #11, Principle #9, #12, and #13 had different names then when I learned them and as we move forward the names change.  But that is just a natural way of things.  Things need to adapt a bit in order to survive.  The core of it does not have to change, but it might need to be tweaked a bit.  Even as the things have changed the book is still great information.  Things have not changed enough for the book to be obsolete or have to be rewritten.  The book is still an excellent starting point if you are just beginning and an excellent tool if you’ve been doing Nia for years.

Another thing I like to remind people is that I am a Nia Teacher and Nia Student.  I post information on my website and blog about Nia.  I might voice my opinion or my understanding about Nia, but the concept and the idea of Nia originated with Debbie Rosas and Carlos Rosas.  I am just helping to promote Nia.  It is a workout, an exercise, a dance that makes one feel energized and happy.  It is something I love to share.  Come to one of my Nia classes or find one near you!
